Chapter 24: Kind People

Lee En was not at all surprised that a Scotland Yard officer had a badge.

What intrigued him even more was why this police officer would come to the University of Michigan to see Professor Osborn.

Moreover, this officer was no ordinary person; he had an inverted V-shaped badge on his sleeve, indicating that he was not just a lowly officer at Scotland Yard.

He was a sheriff!

"Thank you for the clue, Professor Osborn," Joel shook hands with Professor Osborn, "This will be of great help to us in solving the case."

Upon hearing the words "solved case," Li En immediately understood that Scotland Yard must have come because of the man named Webber Walden in the secondhand market.

The three of them, Li En and his companions, had just left when Weber died. It was such a coincidence.

"You're welcome," Professor Osborne replied. "I think those Frenchmen are really suspicious. You should investigate them more thoroughly and try to expel them all from England!"

Joel didn't reply to that, but instead looked at Lyon and Estelle who were walking towards the laboratory.

Stared at by that venomous gaze, Estelle shrank back behind Li En, gripping his clothes tightly with both hands, wrinkling his brand-new school uniform.

"Who are these two?"

Professor Osborne quickly introduced them: "These two are my students, one named Lien Welsh and the other Estelle Phoenix. They were shopping with me in Petticoat Lane on the day of the incident."

Upon hearing this, Joel asked Lee and Estelle, "Gentlemen, did you see any suspicious individuals on the day you were shopping in Petticoat Lane?"

He didn't see the suspicious person, Li En, but he did see a label similar to his father's, with three lines of characters surrounded by thick fog.

It's unclear whether it's related to the case, but since only he can see it, it can't be used as a clue to provide to Scotland Yard.

"I'm sorry," Lee En shook his head, "I didn't see anything suspicious."

Estelle shook her head frantically, "I...I didn't see it either."

Hearing their answers, Joel didn't press further, but simply nodded. "Understood. If either of you recall any details from that day, feel free to come to the police station to see me. My name is Joel Gregg."

After saying that, Joel left without giving Lee a chance to copy the label.

Lee En couldn't very well stop a Scotland Yard sergeant; perhaps if he got involved in some case, he would have a better chance of replicating Joel's reputation.

"Alright, now that the Scotland Yard police have left, let's continue with the experiment," Professor Osborne said, walking into the laboratory. "Lee, you'll be my assistant today."

Li En responded and led Estelle into the laboratory.

The experiment went very smoothly throughout the morning, with no problems in the procedures. The only issue was that it did not produce results that satisfied Professor Osborne.

After struggling all morning, Professor Osborne compromised and decided to first investigate whether there was a problem with his theory.

There was nothing for Li En to do at this point. Seeing that it was almost time, he took the books that Professor Eli had given him and went straight to the entrance of the London Library.

The clock struck two in the afternoon, and Li En, through the intertwined gray fog and steam, saw the entire London Library, nestled in the haze, like a giant alligator turtle perched near the Thames.

The clock face hanging on the exterior wall occasionally emits the sound of gears turning with difficulty, like the whimper of a diseased alligator snapping turtle before it dies.

"Isn't the pollution a bit too bad today?"

Lee muttered something under his breath and saw Jeremy, who had been waiting for him, squatting on the steps of the London Library.

"Sir!" Jeremy spotted Li En from afar. He even went out of his way to wash his face clean in order to see Li En.

Unfortunately, his clothes were still loose and baggy, patched everywhere, and covered in indelible coal dust, emitting a strong industrial stench.

"You're here." The moment Li En ran over, she chose to copy the label.

Please maintain a close and stable distance from your target.

This copying process only took half an hour, which was good news for Li En.

"Sir, what do you need me to do?" Jeremy looked at Li En expectantly.

Li En simply pulled out one shilling from his pocket and said, "It's very simple. You don't need to do anything. Just stand here with me, and in thirty minutes, this shilling will be yours."

"It's that simple?" Jeremy asked, somewhat surprised. "Don't you need me to steal things for you, dispose of bodies, or retrieve things from the sewers?"

What does this even mean...?

Li En shook his head repeatedly, "I'm not so heartless as to make a child do these things. It only takes half an hour, and this 1 shilling is yours."

Jeremy watched in disbelief as Lee En stood there, opened his book, and began to read amidst the thick fog and steam.

Do I really not have to do anything?

After half an hour.

Li En successfully copied the label of the master thief.

With a sigh of relief, Li En handed Jeremy a shilling. "Alright, son, your mission is complete. You can go now."

Before Jeremy could even react, a shilling was already in his hand.

Watching Li En's retreating figure, Jeremy quickly bowed to him.

"Kind sir, thank you for your help. Please don't hesitate to ask if you need anything in the future!"

Li En simply waved from afar before his figure was swallowed up by the gray mist and steam.

In front of the main entrance of the London Library, Monroe, who witnessed this scene, gazed at Lee's retreating figure.

He always believed that Li En had some reason for approaching him, after all, no one would be nice to another person without a reason.

In addition, he was once the son of an earl, and his family still possesses a spirit compass that he has kept as an ominous sign.

At first, Monroe genuinely believed that Lee was a spy sent by the church who wanted to steal the spirit board in his home.

But after witnessing this scene, Monroe had to admit it.

"Mr. Wells is indeed a very kind person."

"Unfortunately, kind people don't live long in this world."

Monroe recalled the church's coercion, his father's forbearance, and the ugly faces of other family members.

Kindness is based on the absence of threats.

Lee Eun needs a shield to protect her from threats.

Perhaps Monroe can do it himself.
