Chapter 54: Your magic is burning my butt!
A moment later, the blonde girl hurriedly ran down the stairs. The clattering, decaying steps made one wonder how much longer the house could last.
She was panting heavily, a fine layer of sweat on her forehead: "The supervisor said that if you can catch this monster, you will get 200 guild points."
The girl looked at the man and the dwarf sitting at the long table playing cards, and smiled politely: "By the way, my name is Jenny, and I come from the city of Bruette."
"Guild points? What use would I have for those?" Marcus played a Wooden Soldier card, glancing at Jenny, whose eyes were now filled with hope.
"Jenny, I know that guild points can be used to prioritize high-paying missions, but all missions are about money. Can't you just give us money directly? Is this how the Adventurers' Guild behaves, exchanging our hard-earned money for a worthless check that's unlikely to be cashed?"
He paused, his tone becoming increasingly harsh:
"Oh, damn it, it seems the water druid came to the camp to punish you. Even the water druid knows that when you go ashore to hunt, you either catch a live person to eat your fill or get your head smashed. Her Majesty the Queen would never tell her people that you will definitely be able to steal shit to eat next time."
For some reason, Jenny, who had just been fond of Marcus, now felt an itch to punch him in the face.
That's incredibly malicious, comparing a guild to a fictional monster like the Water Queen.
"Sir, this matter can be discussed further..." Jenny's lips twitched, her small fists clenched at her sides, and sparks flew in her eyes.
"If negotiation could solve all problems, I think the King's Parliament would be the most powerful organization in the world. They could print a stack of worthless paper every day, make the people pay taxes honestly, and provide blood and gold for the nobles. There would be no need for adventurers who cause trouble everywhere or armies that empty the treasury, because they could solve everything through negotiation."
"You!" Jenny seemed embarrassed and angry. She was clearly speaking normally, so why did the new adventurer have such a foul and provocative attitude?
Her lips trembled as she opened her right hand, a beam of bright yellow light gathering in her palm.
"Lagura, Kalisi! Roar, my wrath! Hellfire!"
The girl screamed in a clear voice, pointing her palm at Marcus who was playing cards.
A flaming arrow, as thick as a finger, flew from the fingertip, its orange-red and bright yellow tail trailing and swirling through the dust in the hall.
It grazed the target's shoulder, slammed into the wooden wall with a loud bang, and left a fist-sized black mark.
Jenny froze on the spot, her face flushing with embarrassment, but soon a sarcastic remark followed.
"Hellfire... It lives up to its name. Damn it, Jenny, you've made my dermatitis burn."
She gritted her teeth and fired two more fire arrows called Hellfire, each time narrowly dodged by Marcus.
To be precise, he didn't dodge; rather, he happened to be throwing cards and drinking when the fire arrow grazed his slightly twisting body.
The spellcaster, whose shot had missed, reddened her eyes and burst into tears. She ran towards the corner staircase, her voice trembling with sobs, shouting to the second floor, "Uncle, he bullied me!"
Bardin, who was playing cards silently, secretly gave a thumbs up, thinking that the tough guy's move was really brilliant.
The most suspicious person is, of course, the supervisor who ordered the camp to be sealed off.
It's strange that Jenny didn't show up even though she had already told someone could handle it, and instead sent a clerk to deal with her.
The fact that someone was causing trouble, yet the supervisor still refused to appear, only increased the suspicion.
When they met, Marcus, as usual, made sarcastic remarks, which eliminated the biggest suspect.
Marcus smiled smugly and nodded to Trish, who was sitting on the same side, indicating that she should keep an eye on the supervisor's situation later.
He can easily anger someone, but when it comes to observing a person's state through their actions, expressions, and details, Trish is much better at it.
The racial talent of the Zhuoer Infrared Vision allows them to directly see changes in temperature. When a person is angry, their body temperature will change slightly. Even if the supervisor pretends to be angry, the temperature will not lie.
The sound of steady footsteps echoed intermittently in the second-floor corridor. The man's gentle comfort gave Jenny, who had been humiliated, a sense of security.
When the commander of the blockade camp appeared in the hall, Marcus's relaxed expression while playing cards turned serious.
He was a burly middle-aged man with a straight back, wearing light and tight chainmail. His solemn gaze swept over the black marks left by the flaming arrows on the wall.
"Jenny, did you burn it?"
“He…” Jenny’s amber eyes were still red as she pointed at Marcus, “He spoke so rudely.”
The supervisor nodded, his gaze lingering on the messy card game on the long table, and said to Jenny, "Go upstairs and organize the files in the archives."
"But..." Jenny hesitated, stared at Marcus with her big eyes for a moment, then turned and slowly walked up the corner of the stairs, crouching down in the corner to peek at the situation in the hall through the railing.
After she disappeared, the supervisor turned around and focused his attention on the troublemaking young adventurer, his voice steady and firm:
"You caused a ruckus downstairs for the entire time it takes to play a game of bridge. Was it because the atmosphere in the camp was too dull, or were you trying to see who would give in first by causing trouble? We've tried that method, and it's completely useless against the... Water Druids you mentioned. They're very cunning."
"So you're saying the cunning one shouldn't go looking? You should learn from Jenny. Look how energetic she was with those Hellfire attacks just now, unlike you, with lifeless eyes and weak limbs."
Marcus put down his bridge cards, walked over to the supervisor with a smug look on his face, and patted his broad shoulder covered by chainmail: "That armor is really nice. You've probably never seen blood before, haven't you? What are the requirements for applying to be the supervisor of the Adventurers' Guild, hmm... is that right?"
He mimicked the manager's manner, coldly surveying every corner of the hall:
"Just look around, then sleep soundly in the house, that's such an easy way to make money."
The supervisor raised his hand, intending to push away Marcus, who was groping him, but found that the burly young man was as unshakeable as an iron tower.
His brows furrowed, and he warned in a harsh tone:
"My position in the Adventurers' Guild was earned through countless battles. I've seen many impolite and reckless young people like you, and most of them met tragic ends."
"Oh? Is that so? Truly the words of a wise man. If you are a brave warrior, where are your teammates? Where are they?" Marcus paused, his tone full of sarcasm.
"What a tough guy. He didn't even know where his teammates died. Can you still hear their cries of agony before they died?"
Marcus didn't understand why someone would say such a nonsensical thing. Perhaps this was the effect of a profound gift from the tongue, automatically piercing the most painful spot in people's hearts.
The supervisor's face did not show any obvious change in expression, but his right thumb, which was resting on the hilt of the sword, unconsciously stroked the counterweight ball for a while.
He sighed deeply, seemingly with a sense of enlightenment that comes with age, and filled with a feeling of helplessness towards the impulsiveness of youth:
"Let's get back to the main topic. Do you have any ideas on how to find the monsters hiding in the camp? Is there anything I can do to help?"
