Reborn in 2010, the AI in my mind is too powerful.
Chapter 389 The Beginning of Breath
When Lee Hsien Loong gives a public speech, he always repeats it three times: in English, Chinese, and Malay.
In terms of generality, English should definitely be spoken first, because Chinese, Malays, and Indians among Singapore's citizens can all understand it. English is Singapore's administrative language, a common language among all ethnic groups, and also the language of actual work.
In terms of the number of people, the speech should start in Chinese, since 70% of the citizens are of Chinese descent, and a speech in Chinese reflects the importance attached to Chinese culture and language.
However, Lee Hsien Loong usually chooses Malay as his first language. Although the actual number of speakers is relatively small, Malay is the national language of Singapore.
However, this time, Lee Hsien Loong changed his previous habit and used English directly. This can be seen as an attitude, as he wants everyone to understand the government's policies more quickly and clearly.
In the press room of the Istana, Lee Hsien Loong, dressed in a dark suit, stood at the podium.
He inherited his parents' outstanding talents, which has always allowed him to give speeches without notes or a script, and he can look at the camera the whole time.
Compared to his father, his face was kinder, more approachable, and less stern.
Good evening, fellow Singaporeans. I'm not here to announce any good news. I'm here to tell you something.
The past few months have been memorable in human history. Everyone knows how much society has been transformed by Aurora Group's technology.
Trafigura, a Singapore-based company, saw its founder, Claude Doffin, undergo a rebirth process in Singapore, successfully extending his lifespan.
As you may have seen in the news, a newcomer wearing a helmet walked into Wall Street in New York.
In Hawaii, countless disabled people have received help from the Aurora Group, enabling them to stand up again and regain their vitality. Some critically ill patients have been given a new lease on life, extending their lives.
These real-life examples all tell us that a new era has arrived.
Last week, the entire Singapore team went to Lanai Island to discuss Singapore's future with Mr. Chen Yiran of the Aurora Group.
We all know that the world is undergoing tremendous changes, and Singapore needs to find its place in the future.
Ultimately, we made our decision and reached an agreement with the aurora.
We have gained some, all Singapore citizens, all those with health insurance, have been granted newborn status.
Many people are not very familiar with Aurora Group's "Rebirth" process, so let me explain. After "Rebirth," you still need to purchase some wet-component brain-computer interface (BCI) maintenance parts every year. You can think of it as a price to pay for immortality; from now on, you'll be taking medication for life.
In the first year of university, this is completely free. But from the second year onwards, everyone has to pay. The government will reimburse 7% of the cost, and individuals only need to pay 3%.
Furthermore, Singapore will receive one thousand places annually, which are permanently free. We will prioritize granting these places to scientists, sociologists, and other individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society.
Aurora named their company's currency "Interest," taking into account its future status. In Singapore, the Interest will gradually replace the Singapore Dollar in daily life. Of course, a dual-track system will be prevalent for a period, but we will strive to stabilize the market.
Therefore, we will issue long-term bonds guaranteed by national credit, purchase the first wave of interest from Aurora, and provide it to all citizens.
I won't go into the technical details tonight. There are two reasons: First, it's not my work, and I'm not qualified to release it on behalf of others. Second, to be honest, I'm still trying to understand it myself.
I won't pretend I've seen all the consequences of this, but I believe it's something Singapore has to do.
Finally, I want to talk about some sensitive topics.
Around the world, many countries are protesting against the technology used to display the aurora borealis, but I want to say that Singaporeans still have the right to protest. We are an inclusive society. Among us here are Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Taoists, Hindus, Sikhs, and people who do not believe in any religion.
I know your beliefs will give you completely different answers. Some will say that lifespan is determined by God. Some will say that immortality is a gift from God, not a product of technology. Some will say that keeping consciousness in a shell is too terrifying. Others will say, "This is who I am; why not live if I can?"
I'm not going to answer for you. Nor should the government.
The Singapore government will not force people to live forever. This is not a homeowners' program, nor is it mandatory medical insurance. We are not assuming you will accept this; we are simply offering you an opportunity.
I promise three things:
First, those who refuse to be reborn will not lose a single civil right. Your healthcare, your CPF (Central Provident Fund), your HDB flat, and your vote will all remain unchanged.
Secondly, those who accept new citizenship will not lose their Singapore citizenship; their National Registration status will remain valid.
Third, there will be a cooling-off period before signing, independent legal advice, and consultation with your own religious group. We will establish a religious and ethical advisory committee, with representatives from each religious group. The government will only provide the venue, not the answers.
There's one more thing I wanted to mention tonight: the 1,000 free permanent residency slots will not be decided by the Cabinet. The criteria will be handed over to an independent commission, and everything will be made public.
In the first round, neither I nor any other cabinet members will apply.
Tomorrow Parliament will have its first reading of this bill, followed by a public debate. I urge all members of Parliament, including those from the opposition, to voice all their concerns without reservation.
This is not something a government can decide on its own.
I know many people feel uneasy, and to be honest, I feel the same way.
But our country started with nothing in 1965, and eventually rose from the Third World to the First World. This was not due to luck, but to the hard work and struggle of the entire nation while others were still hesitating.
I believe we can do it again this time. Thank you everyone.
Lin Weiming knew this matter was of great significance. He also knew that Aurora couldn't do charity, and his mother couldn't possibly get a permanent free spot. And the word "rest" was a bit terrifying.
But he couldn't worry about that now; surviving was the priority.
He hurriedly looked at his mother, a little afraid that she would refuse to give him a new life because she was worried about the money.
But unexpectedly, his mother was also afraid of death!
"Son, the government is giving us a chance now. They're taking care of new students and even covering 70% of the subsequent costs. You can afford the rest, right?"
"Mom, I earn quite a bit, so it shouldn't be a problem. Also, I'm considering switching jobs to the Trafigura Group recently; the salary might increase significantly! It'll definitely be enough!"
"Then what are you still doing here? Hurry up and go out to eat, then go get to work."
Lin Weiming nodded blankly and exited the virtual world.
The moment her son logged off, Lin's mother immediately recalled to the virtual world, returning to her home. Then she turned on the battery and listened to Lee Hsien Loong repeat what he had said before in both Chinese and Malay.
She couldn't hold back her tears. If she hadn't experienced the beauty of the virtual world, she wouldn't be afraid of death. In fact, to be honest, she had wanted to die for a long time, but ALS prevented her from moving and made suicide impossible.
But after experiencing the virtual world, she became genuinely terrified of death. There was delicious food, all sorts of movies and TV shows, and she could even see her son—a younger version of him!
To please her, her son even used a shrinking function to become a child, which made her very happy.
She wasn't some bedridden, seriously ill elderly person who couldn't even watch TV. She was young, energetic, and felt incredibly vibrant.
Having suppressed her emotions for so long, she burst into tears for a full ten minutes before gradually calming down.
She was a little surprised; the Oasis was really powerful. Her crying here felt so real that she couldn't distinguish between virtual and reality anymore.
After calming herself down, she waved and started looking at some information in the backend. She made up her mind: she wanted to go back to school.
She can't become a burden to her son. Now that she's reborn, she's no longer a retired old woman, and she should be able to go back to work.
It's said that wet brains learn things much faster than normal people. After she's reborn, she'll have to find a job as soon as possible.
---------------------------------------------------------
Lee Hsien Loong's speech caused a huge sensation around the world, and the protests that had just begun to subside started to resurface.
However, Singaporeans had already made their decision. After a perfunctory process the next day, Parliament passed the bill unanimously. The opposition made some symbolic comments and then let it pass. Singapore's opposition is quite indifferent, and its self-perception is that it is a party that opposes for the sake of opposing, just to give the People's Action Party a motivation to move forward.
They can distinguish what is the general trend, and they never hold back on important matters, always firmly supporting the government.
Subsequently, Aurora began using Singapore as its settlement location.
Although governments around the world have not yet taken action, companies that have transactions with Aurora and various raw material suppliers have begun to discuss with Aurora the possibility of using interest as the payment currency, and interest-related transactions have immediately increased.
After careful consideration, Aurora Group began using interest to pay for various raw materials.
Many employees of Aurora Group already have certain benefits, which are part of their compensation.
Based on the calculation of employee salaries, Aurora set the initial interest rate not too high. 6% interest only costs 1 cent, which translates to only $1.50 per hour, $144 per day, $4320 per month, and $51,840 per year.
However, things changed dramatically after interest futures began trading on the Singapore Exchange. On the first day, the price of interest skyrocketed, with the price of a one-year contract increasing more than sixfold to $330,000.
Of course, some non-governmental organizations have also begun to form groups to call on newcomers to voluntarily step forward and provide their chips so that they can crack the time lock in the Aurora technology.
Google then jumped in again, hoping that Aurora would put its humanitarian spirit aside and abandon this evil idea.
They also announced progress in developing a wet-process AI brain, which, while unable to replicate human consciousness, significantly enhances AI intelligence. Furthermore, they are preparing to deliver it to several regions for coordinated AI use.
