When traveling from Silicon Valley to San Diego, there are basically two routes to choose from.

One option is I-5, a short drive of less than 500 miles, or about 700 kilometers. The road conditions are good, but traffic jams are not uncommon, and you can get there in a day. If you're feeling tired, you can rest overnight in Los Angeles along the way.

However, it is clear that Los Angeles does not hold much appeal for Chen Yiran. After graduating in her previous life, she lived in Los Angeles for nearly five years. Apart from missing a few Chinese restaurants here, the only thing that attracts Chen Yiran to Los Angeles is the weather.

Hannah didn't want to go to Los Angeles either. In her words, the only attraction in Los Angeles is Disney, so why not just fly to Orlando if you want to go to Disney?

So the two discussed it and decided to take the more scenic California Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway.

As the name suggests, this highway follows the coastline, offering views of steep cliffs, pastoral hills, and endless coastlines. Many magazines have called it the most beautiful highway in the world, and Chen Yiran believes it's at least one of the most beautiful, if not the absolute most.

There were many attractions along the way, which Hannah hadn't fully explored, so she was very excited. Although her heart was already with the San Diego Zoo, she agreed to see all the sights along the way and spend the night in Santa Barbara.

From Menlo Park, take Highway 101 past San Jose, and you'll reach Monterey in about an hour. This section is just a regular highway, nothing particularly interesting.

Monterey is where you truly enter the classic Highway 1 route, and it's a must-visit place.

Hannah had been here before, but after learning that Chen Yiran hadn't, she strongly recommended it. She said it has the best aquarium in the world.

In fact, Chen Yiran had been here before in his previous life, even many times, and he really liked the aquarium here.

The two first went to Monterey Old Fisherman's Wharf for a meal, which is one of the oldest fisherman's wharves in California.

Wooden houses and marine elements are quite common on the West Coast, not particularly unusual, and the scenery is generally average. The only interesting thing is the row of sea lions that lie on the pier all year round. They are not afraid of people and sunbathe with their bellies bulging under people's gaze.

After that, the main attraction was the Monterey Aquarium, which used to be a sardine cannery and was later transformed into an aquarium, which is quite magical.

Upon entering, the first thing you see is the sea otter area. These creatures are so adorable! Unfortunately, because the sea otters previously smashed the glass with their shells, causing it to leak, the keepers no longer provide them with shelled food in the front area.

It's a bit of a shame we didn't get to see the sea otters attacking. But thankfully, sea otters are quite common in the US, and you can see them attacking luxury yachts in many ports along the West Coast.

Further on, there was a seahorse-themed exhibition area, but Chen Yiran felt it was just so-so.

The open sea area beyond is truly breathtaking. As you walk through the scenic area, you can see a ring of sardines circling the glass above your head. Standing in the middle gives you the feeling of being surrounded by countless sardines.

In the deeper sea areas, you can also see many different kinds of fish, which are all very interesting.

Next, in the seabird area, there was a very unique type of seabird. One particularly interesting one was the tufted puffin, which looked like it had its head in pigtails. They weren't afraid of people at all, just looking at us from in front of the glass. The aquarium's glass windows also offered a view of the underwater world that's not normally seen, and the seabirds' round bellies were quite adorable.

Further on, there is a huge sunroom aviary with a water system that even simulates ocean waves. The keepers bury breadworms everywhere in the soil, and all sorts of birds are looking for food.

Finally, there's the Monterey Aquarium's most iconic feature: the kelp forest. Through glass windows several meters high, you can see the complete kelp forest ecosystem. It perfectly showcases California's kelp forest ecosystem, and Chen Yiran is always awestruck by it whenever she visits.

I quickly took out my camera and started filming my parents.

The two of them, feeling rather lazy after coming out, even considered staying overnight before leaving.

Chen Yiran thought for a moment and said hesitantly, "There are so many tourist attractions along the way. If we drive at full speed for nine hours to get to San Diego, and we need to stay overnight every hour or so, it will take us seven days to get there."

Hannah retorted indignantly, "Wasn't it you who said you were tired?"

"What I mean is, you go ahead with your meeting, let me enjoy the beautiful scenery. Didn't we agree to take turns having meetings before we came out?"

"But we've only been driving for a little over an hour!"

"Alright, alright, we'll change the person at the next attraction."

Amidst their bickering, the two continued their journey, spending ten dollars to drive on 17-Mile Drive. This section is a private toll road, touted as California's most beautiful coastline, but it's really just so-so. California has so many beautiful coastlines, each one stunning.

Along the way, they also saw a lone cypress tree, a cypress tree growing alone on the edge of a cliff for 250 years. It's the most photographed thing on Highway 1, appearing on countless postcards. Chen Yiran didn't really think it was anything special, but since they were already there, they took a picture anyway.

After an hour of driving with stops and starts along the 17-Mile Drive, we arrived in the town of Carmel.

The town has no house numbers; it's identified by building names and streets. Everywhere you look, there are art galleries and flower-themed cottages. It's said that the master painter Zhang Daqian once lived here.

This must be the most original American small town look. As usual, Chen Yiran got out of the car and took a lot of photos.

There's no way around it, that's how my parents were in my past life. They felt tired when they went on trips, but they always wholeheartedly supported their son's travel plans. Then they would instruct Chen Yiran not to miss a single attraction and to take pictures of everything to show them.

After driving a while longer, we entered Big Sur.

Finally, Hannah took over driving, and Chen Yi started frantically taking photos to record the scenery along the way.

McVey Falls, located within Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, is the only coastal waterfall in California that flows directly into the Pacific Ocean. It's quite interesting; although it's called a waterfall, the water flow looks rather small. However, waterfalls that crash directly onto the beach are indeed rare.

I got a general view of Hearst Castle from a distance; it just looks like a beautiful manor.

Further south, past Morrow Bay, we could see Morrow Rock in the distance, the sacred rock of the Native Americans. Chen Yiran had forgotten the specific story behind it.

I called out to Jasmine.

Morro Rock is a volcanic plug left from a volcanic eruption approximately 20 million years ago. Standing 177 meters high at the mouth of Morro Bay, it has been home to the Chumash and Salinan Indian tribes since 6500 BC in the area and surrounding mountains.

They have various myths and legends about Morro Rock. Although they disagree on whether it's possible to climb Morro Rock, they all consider this reef sacred, calling it Lisamu. [A friend of yours from a past life told me this.]

Chen Yiran quickly began to show off, telling Hannah the story of the stone.

Hannah looked bewildered and said, "How do you know so much? Did you do your research before coming?"

Chen Yiran said rather smugly, "Hey, I just glanced at it and memorized it. There's no way I can't remember it."

"You really have a photographic memory? I saw a movie the other day, about blackjack! And Rain Man, you've seen it, right? We could use your photographic memory to rob a casino."

"Hey classmate, is it possible that we're all under 21 and got kicked out by security guards right at the entrance?"

"It's okay, some casinos accept 18s. I'll look for one later and try it out sometime. Or, to make it simple, could you borrow two adult driver's licenses? The security guards are face-blind and won't recognize you."

"When we start gambling, they might not check carefully, but if we win and have to pay back the money, they won't take it seriously. Besides, if we win too much, we'll have to pay taxes."

"what!"

We chatted all the way, and the two jars we set off in the morning didn't arrive in Santa Barbara until after 7 p.m.

This city is entirely Spanish in style, with the whole city featuring a uniform red roof and white walls in a Spanish colonial style. Backed by Mount Santa Inés and facing the Pacific Ocean, Californians call it the American Riviera, a retirement paradise for the wealthy.

The two booked the Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel, which offers direct access to the beach in the rooms, giving Chen Yiran the feeling of being in the Maldives.

It was getting late, and the two of them were too tired to go out for dinner, but luckily the hotel restaurant was quite good.

Freshly shucked local oysters and sea urchin sashimi, all caught that day. Steamed Dungeness crab with a buttery garlic sauce. Buttered pasta wrapped around large chunks of lobster meat with thick-cut fries. And the finishing touch: two bowls of clam chowder.

After finishing their meal, the two lit a fire pit on the terrace and lay down to watch the sea view at night.

Hannah, fiddling with her phone, said aggressively, "We can't be this slow tomorrow! We need to be at the park by tomorrow!"

"Forget it, can you even get up tomorrow morning? You won't be able to get up until noon, and by the time we get to San Diego it will be evening. We can go to the park the day after tomorrow, the ticket can be used anytime."

"Okay, it's ready to use anytime. I've confirmed with my mom several times. If the park doesn't let me in, I'll call her and cry."

Super VIP tickets for San Diego are currently in high demand, and normally it takes one or two months to book. But Hannah's mom just pulled some strings and got them sorted out; they said she could get in anytime by giving her name.

That damned old man, he makes you want to take his place.

In her past life, Chen Yiran had also met Lao Qian, and even ate at a DuPont family banquet. At the time, she was only filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred, but dared not have the slightest thought of replacing him.

Chen Yiran felt that with enough effort, he might become one of the earliest pioneers of old-money wealth.

But that goal is too ambitious. For now, let's bully the old money's children and make them cry their hearts out.

Hannah glanced over at the opportune moment, and without saying anything as she walked, said, "What are you thinking about? That wicked grin of yours definitely means something bad is going on."

"I wasn't thinking about anything, I was just thinking that if you really like pandas that much, you could come to Sichuan with me. Once my project is successful and I'm somewhat famous, I can find some people and figure out a way to touch some smaller pandas. It's not possible here in the US; our country has an agreement that no matter how much money you offer, you can't touch them."

"what!"
