Game of Thrones: Dance of the Dragons
Chapter 4 The Imperial Conference and the Stone Steps Archipelago
King's Landing is one of the most prosperous cities on the continent of Westerlands and the capital of the Targaryen dynasty.
On the fifteenth of each month, many poor people would enter the city-state, hoping to receive the king's bi-monthly "atonement for the eldest son" food distribution to feed themselves.
"roar--"
Above King's Landing, the golden Syracuse swiftly flew past the flea nest, heading towards the dragon's lair.
"It's the princess's dragon! The princess is back!"
The common people were used to it; as the capital of the Targaryen dynasty, it was perfectly normal for dragons to occasionally fly overhead.
"How are you, little brother? Can you still hold on?" Renilla asked with concern.
"Sister, can we go to sleep first, and then go see Father?" Baylor was exhausted and sleepy, and his voice grew softer and softer.
Baylor doesn't deny that flying with dragons is an exciting thing, but he can't just rest for three hours and then fly like crazy all day!
Rhaenyra spoke with a hint of apology, "It's all so we can get you home as quickly as possible. Once we're in King's Landing, whether they're the Hightoars or the Greens, they'll all be out of the way!"
"roar--"
Syracuse slightly turned its dragon head in response to Renilla.
"Alright, alright, you're right. Let's land quickly." Baylor replied perfunctorily with his eyes closed.
Renilla gave a soft hum and urged Syracuse to fly towards the dragon's lair.
A few minutes later, Syracuse flew to the entrance of the dragon's lair and, driven by the dragon tamer, slowly crawled into the lair to rest.
Dragon tamers, or Dragon Guards for short, are mostly descendants of Valyrians who have served the Targaryen family for generations.
They were fluent in the High Valyrian language and were responsible for taking care of the dragons' daily needs and feeding them.
"Prepare enough sheep for my dragon," Renilla commanded.
"Yes, Princess," the dragon tamer replied respectfully.
A short while later, a luxurious carriage stopped by the roadside, where a white knight in a white robe had been waiting for some time.
"Princess, welcome back, but the King is furious that you secretly left King's Landing." The speaker was a white-robed knight, Ilrich, one of the Kingsguard.
At the same time, he also noticed that there was a little boy with blond and silver hair, but who didn't seem very energetic, next to the princess.
"My brother, the eldest son of King Viserys I, and the sole heir to the Iron Throne, Baelor Targaryen," Rhaenyra proudly introduced.
Upon hearing the other's identity, Ilic immediately dismounted from his white horse, strode to Baelor, and respectfully said, "Welcome back to King's Landing, Your Highness. I am Ilic, a member of the Kingsguard."
"Thank you, Sir Illic," Baylor said, forcing himself to speak slowly and deliberately.
After chatting for a while, Bellor and Renée boarded the royal carriage, preparing to return to the Red Keep from the Silent Nuns Street.
Passing by the flea den, Renilla could take this opportunity to give Beller a brief introduction to the overall size and situation of the Red Castle.
Baylor strained to stay awake as he listened to Renilla's account, comparing the information with the blueprints of the Red Keep in his mind.
Upon returning to the Red Keep, Rhaenyra suggested that Baelor change his clothes so that he could meet his father Viserys in the best possible condition, but he refused.
"Sister, let's go see Father first."
"I believe that he and the ministers of the Royal Council will be eager to see me, the King's eldest son, whom they have not seen for six years."
Baylor's tone was calm and indifferent, but Renilla, who had spent the most time with him, knew very well that this kid was hiding a knife behind his smile and was definitely up to some "good idea".
"Okay, okay, I'll listen to you."
Renilla took Beller's hand and headed straight for the council hall.
Inside the council hall, King Viserys, in his thirties, smiled warmly and spoke with each of his ministers.
He was recognized by his ministers and the people as a king who was both kind and tolerant, which was extremely rare in the Targaryen kingdom.
But at this moment, he listened to the report from the sea serpent Corliss Valerian with a displeased expression.
"Four ships were robbed, and the last one was flying my flag."
"The Stone Steps Islands have become a major threat to the kingdom, yet you are still sitting here, hesitating over trivial matters of the court?!" the sea serpent angrily questioned the king.
Otto began, "Lord Corliss, if you have important matters to report, the King will certainly..."
Corliss, not wanting to hear his nonsense, interrupted him directly, "I just want to know, what should be done with my ships and men?"
Otto then replied, "It's very simple, Lord Corliss. The kingdom will compensate you for your ships and men, and issue the relevant pensions."
"I don't want compensation!" Corliss looked at Viserys. "I want to conquer the Stepstone Islands by force and burn that crab feeder to ashes!"
"Throughout the kingdom's history, no king has ever dared to wage war against the free trade city-states, and I do not wish to be the first."
Viserys was a kind and forgiving king. He vehemently abhorred war and did not wish to plunge the kingdom into unnecessary conflict during his reign.
"But human ambition and desire never disappear because of peace; on the contrary, they only intensify, my father." Baylor leaned against the door and heard the whole argument between his father and the sea serpent.
"You support the sea serpent?" Renilla's expression was somewhat surprised.
Like her father Viserys, she disliked war, believing it only brought misfortune and suffering.
Baylor shook his head. "I'm just stating the facts."
"The Stone Steps Isles are a very important port, with the continent of Westeros to the left and the Free Cities to the right."
"Whoever occupies this place will reap countless port fees."
"My dear brother, you're only six years old. How did you manage to analyze so much information?" Renilla was astonished by Beller's talent.
"Read more books, look at more maps. Then, sister, you will become as knowledgeable as me." Baylor was very proud of his extensive knowledge.
His judgment and knowledge told him that the more he understood about the world, the more invincible he would be.
"Little brother, our family has already produced a learned dragonless Vigen, and I don't want you to become the second one," Renilla said earnestly.
That was the fourth son of his great-grandfather Jaheris I. He didn't like riding dragons, nor did he like his older or younger sisters. He preferred to stay in the dull and boring school city and read books.
"How could that be? I'm just passing the time by reading," Baylor explained with a smile.
"Anyway, you should read less books in the future. This is for your own good!" Renilla said stubbornly.
Belle couldn't argue with her, so she had no choice but to nod in agreement.
Before long, the argument in the council hall ended, and the sea serpent Corliss returned defeated and left the council hall in anger.
Renilla and Beller also took this opportunity to enter the council hall.
"Father, I'm back."
Viserys frowned, his voice filled with barely concealed anger. "My dear daughter, do you know how worried I was when you left King's Landing without a word?"
"Now, return to your sommelier's seat, we are about to discuss the Royal Hunt."
Renilla smiled and took a step back, pushing Beller in front of her.
"Father, do you still remember me?" Baylor smiled very reluctantly, his tone and expression revealing his exhaustion.
