Mr. Liang, you mustn't covet other people's fiancées!

Chapter 8 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.

Aunt Wang prepared a sumptuous meal. After setting out the cake and lighting the candles, she ceremoniously turned off the lights and let Wen Li make a wish.

Looking at the smile and expectation on Aunt Wang's face, Wen Li closed her eyes and went through the procedure.

Wen Li didn't make any wishes. None of her wishes from childhood to adulthood had come true, so there was no need to create any more obstacles for herself. Let it be.

When Liang Chaoxu returned, carrying the scent of autumn rain, Aunt Wang was clearing the dining table.

Upon seeing a slice of cake on the table, Liang Chaoxu immediately tensed up and asked Aunt Wang, "Did Wen Li eat cake?"

"No, I ate it," Aunt Wang replied.

Liang Chaoxu breathed a sigh of relief and continued to ask, "Did Wen Li go upstairs to rest?"

"Yes." Aunt Wang said, pointing to the gift box on the coffee table, "The courier just arrived after we finished eating, and Miss Wen's birthday present hasn't been taken up yet."

"It's alright, I'll take it upstairs." Liang Chaoxu said, walking over to pick up the gift box and heading upstairs.

The door to the master bedroom was ajar, and the light inside was warm and yellow. Wen Li seemed to be on the phone, her laughter soft: "No need to trouble yourself, senior. I've already received your birthday wishes, so there's no need for a gift."

Liang Chaoxu paused in his knocking, standing frozen at the door. His manners told him he should turn and leave immediately, but a pang of bitterness gripped his feet, preventing him from moving an inch.

Wen Li's voice was light and cheerful. When she spoke certain interjections, the last syllable rose slightly, like a feather brushing against Liang Chaoxu's heart, causing a slight tingling sensation while also causing a faint sting.

Liang Chaoxu gripped the doorknob tightly, his eyelids half-closed, concealing the turbulent emotions surging within.

"Sir?" Aunt Wang came upstairs to bring Wen Li hot milk and saw Liang Chaoxu standing motionless at the master bedroom door, so she called out to him.

Liang Chaoxu snapped out of his daze and handed the gift box to Aunt Wang: "Give the gift to Wen Li, I'm going to take care of my work."

Aunt Wang was a little puzzled, so she took the gift and knocked on the master bedroom door.

Wen Li had already hung up the phone. When she saw Aunt Wang come in, she smiled and thanked her before taking the milk and slowly drinking it.

"Auntie, I just heard you call Liang Chaoxu. Has he already returned?"

Aunt Wang put the gift box aside and nodded, saying, "Yes, I just got back."

"Didn't you say they have a party every year that goes on until very late?" Wen Li glanced at her phone; it was only a little past nine o'clock at night.

"Perhaps the weather was bad this year, so Mr. Wang came back early." Aunt Wang said, her gaze slowly turning to Wen Li, her eyes filled with complex emotions.

"Thank you, Auntie." Wen Li handed the cup to Aunt Wang and got up to wash up.

"Let me help you, Miss Wen." Aunt Wang quickly went over to help her.

Wen Li's arm is recovering slowly, and the cast has not yet been removed.

I have to be extra careful every time I bathe it, making sure it doesn't get wet. After the bath, I also need Aunt Wang to help me fasten my bra.

The next morning, Wen Li was woken up by noises downstairs.

She walked out of the bedroom, still half asleep, and saw Aunt Wang pulling her suitcase and running towards the door.

Liang Chaoxu's assistant, Yan Jin, also ran out.

"What's wrong with Aunt Wang?" Wen Li asked Liang Chaoxu in the living room downstairs, standing by the handrail in the upstairs corridor.

Hearing this, Liang Chaoxu turned around and said, "Her husband had a car accident last night, and she has to rush back to her hometown to take care of him."

Wen Li's sleepiness vanished instantly: "Is it serious?"

"I don't know, I'll find out when Aunt Wang gets back," Liang Chaoxu replied truthfully.

As he spoke, Liang Chaoxu picked up his car keys: "Go back to sleep for a while, it's still early. I'm going to work, and a part-time worker will come to cook for you at noon and in the evening."

Wen Li nodded, then remembered Aunt Wang's husband's accident. So she called out to him, "Mr. Liang."

"Hmm?" Liang Chaoxu stopped and looked up at her again.

Wen Li pursed her lips and calmly said, "Drive safely."

Liang Chaoxu's pupils contracted slightly, and he looked at her for a while with some surprise. His gaze was so direct that it was hard for her to meet his eyes.

Wen Li felt inexplicably nervous under his gaze, and subconsciously took a few steps back, saying, "I'm going to sleep now."

Only after Wen Li's figure completely disappeared down the corridor did Liang Chaoxu withdraw his gaze, lower his head, and smile.

Wen Li returned to her bedroom and lay down again. After closing her eyes, her mind was filled with Liang Chaoxu's gaze. She felt as if she had been bound by his gaze and almost couldn't break free.

Liang Chaoxu returned home from get off work at 8 PM.

Wen Li was downstairs getting a drink of water when she saw him return. She quickly reached up and pulled the hem of her cardigan to cover her chest.

She couldn't fasten her bra with one hand, so she didn't wear it after showering, only a thin nightgown. She had deliberately put on a cardigan when she went downstairs, just in case he suddenly came back and it was awkward.

When Liang Chaoxu took off his coat and walked over from the entrance, he noticed that Wen Li's expression was not quite right and subconsciously assumed that her waist or arm was uncomfortable.

"Does your back hurt or your arm?" Liang Chaoxu walked to Wen Li's side and bent down slightly to ask her.

Wen Li clutched her cardigan tightly and shook her head: "It doesn't hurt."

"You have a fever again?" Liang Chaoxu reached out and touched Wen Li's forehead. "It's not hot."

Wen Li turned and went upstairs, her ears burning: "I'm fine, I'll go back to my bedroom first."

Liang Chaoxu was a little puzzled. He glanced at the water glass on the table out of the corner of his eye, hesitated for a few seconds, and then picked it up and took it upstairs.

After knocking, Liang Chaoxu opened the door and saw Wen Li pulling the blanket up to her neck, revealing only a slightly flushed face.

"Your arm shouldn't be pressed down, put it on the blanket instead," Liang Chaoxu said, putting down the water glass and looking at her face.

"Okay, I'll put it down in a bit." Wen Li nodded, her eyes darting away nervously, not daring to meet his gaze.

She had just taken off her cardigan when he knocked on the door, startling her so much that she quickly pulled the blanket over herself.

Seeing this, Liang Chaoxu immediately squatted down, draped his arm over the edge of the bed, and stared intently at her, asking, "Are you feeling unwell?"

"No," Wen Li shook her head.

Liang Chaoxu reached out and helped Wen Li tidy the blankets while saying, "Since Aunt Wang isn't here, I'll take care of you. If you feel unwell, just tell me."

Wen Li pulled the blanket tighter, burying her head further under it, and nodded, saying, "Okay, you can go now, I want to sleep."

The blanket blocked Wen Li's voice, so Liang Chaoxu didn't hear clearly. He simply grabbed the edge of the blanket and pulled it down: "What did you say...?"

His words abruptly stopped, and Liang Chaoxu quickly turned his head away, his ears turning red at a visible speed. He stammered, "Um... I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."

Wen Li pulled the blanket back up, completely covering her head, and said in a muffled voice, "Stop talking, just go."

Liang Chaoxu left the room with a flushed face. When he closed the door, he stood at the doorway, closed his eyes, and calmed himself down for a while.

But the scene from just now kept replaying in my mind, and I couldn't shake it off.

Liang Chaoxu opened his eyes, let out a long breath, glanced down at himself, and went to take a shower in the second bedroom.

The cold water cascaded down, and more than forty minutes later, Liang Chaoxu's eyes were bloodshot as he muttered to himself, "I have absolutely no self-control."
