Folklore simulation, starting with the mortician

Chapter 5 The Ascension Cult: Making a Fortune

"Master chef, I'll have to trouble you with this as well. Please sew it up while you're at it. These days, the worst thing is getting haunted by evil spirits. Thank you for your help!"

The constable then handed Li Feng a silver ingot from his pocket, borrowed some incense ash, and ordered his men to carry the body to the morgue in the west wing.

Before leaving, he made sure to say hello to Li Feng and told him that if he needed anything in the future, he could just go to the county government office and call him Yang Liuzi.

Watching Yang Liuzi leave, Li Feng weighed the silver ingot in his hand and secretly clicked his tongue in amazement. No matter what kind of world it was, there was always something to gain from being an official.

Suppressing his thoughts, Li Feng turned around and went to the backyard. He calmly lit incense in front of the shrine of the local earth god, which was, needless to say, the prescribed procedure.

But after taking a closer look, seeing that the incense was burning at a leisurely pace, indicating a good omen, Li Feng finally felt relieved. He then grabbed the tools from the upper room and headed towards the morgue in the west wing.

Before they even got close, wow, the pungent smell assaulted their brains. Li Feng placed an incense array in the cracks between the bricks. Although his technique was rough, it worked well.

As a gentle breeze wafted by, a subtle fragrance drifted through the air, significantly reducing the stench in the dormitory. However, the lingering odor mixed with the fragrance still made it difficult to dispel the lingering smell.

If Li Feng hadn't already experienced the life of a big pot and a cheap chef, and become familiar with even more despicable flavors, he would have fainted long ago.

This time, the skill of sewing up corpses really made Li Feng sweat profusely, mainly because his cheap master didn't pass it on, only giving him a yellowed booklet that was kept at the bottom of his chest, which Li Feng had to rummage through his belongings to find it.

Therefore, Li Feng first set an example, and then in the evening, he would properly begin sewing up the corpse, which was the auspicious time for sending off the spirit.

It took Li Feng a full hour to sort out the details and grasp the characteristics of each corpse.

Before he knew it, the sky was getting dark. Li Feng was still in the main hall in the backyard, drinking tea and keeping the local earth god company. He didn't care about his master's previous habits, as long as there was enough incense.

He still had the silver coins given to him by Yang Liuzi, which were more valuable than human life in this chaotic world. Buying some high-quality incense was a piece of cake for him.

As he pondered his current predicament and considered the use of the ill-gotten gains in the simulator, he was genuinely puzzled as to why this cheap master had given him the money.

This green coin is not like bad money. It is recorded in the thread-bound book left by the master that it is a treasure stained with the blood of its customers. Ordinary experts cannot take it away.

It's a precious thing that follows its own life and money.

I couldn't figure it out no matter how much I thought about it. There must be some deep secrets involved. I wonder what methods my master used to be so ruthless. Not only did he take away the Sun family, who were traveling from out of town to make a living, but he also took down Liang Daozi's family.

Li Feng was startled as the tea burned his tongue. He couldn't help but slap his thigh and look at the local earth god smoking incense. It took him a long time to come to his senses. This was not his master's fault; he had been too heavy-handed!

When I think of the words my master left behind, "Leave a way out for others," I realize that's what it meant.

But then Li Feng shook his head. He couldn't blame anyone else for the sins he had committed. Besides, he was going to sew up their corpses tonight, so he could consider it a good deed done to the end.

With this thought in mind, Li Feng glanced at the sky outside. The crescent moon had already appeared, and estimating that it was about time, he started walking towards the large communal bed in the west wing.

On the left is the Sun family, and on the right is the Liang family; the main feature is that they are all neat and tidy.

Li Feng first bowed to these corpses, made a gesture of respect, lit incense, and scattered some paper money to prevent vengeful spirits from knocking on his door.

After everything was in order, Li Feng picked up his tools and began to proceed step by step, following the steps he had taken at dawn.

Soothing, comforting, threading a needle, patching, makeup...

Every step must be perfect, every step must be taken with care.

Even though he had done it once, when it came to the real thing, he was still a little lacking in energy. Before long, Li Feng's forehead was covered with fine sweat.

An hour passed, and two sticks of incense had burned out, but only five corpses had been stitched up.

Just as he was about to sew the next one, Li Feng suddenly heard a knock on the door outside.

Li Feng was immediately startled. According to his master's words, if the door of the mortician was knocked on in the middle of the night, it must be something bad.

But Li Feng's hands are still busy right now. Sewing corpses is all about maintaining one breath; if that breath is cut off, the person will be taken away.

The simulator's slideshow flashed before Li Feng's eyes. The lives of ordinary people were insignificant, mostly trivial matters, but the lives of Master Sun and Liang Daozi were quite remarkable.

The first one is Sun, the master.

You were a lazy, stubborn boy born in the fields. Your parents toiled all their lives, never expecting you to amount to anything. They just wanted you to be honest and marry a decent woman from a respectable family, have a son, and continue the family line—that was their wish fulfilled.

[Unexpectedly, you were a restless soul. Seeing how much money other merchants made, you thought, why can't I? So you simply pawned the property of the wealthy Hu family in the village, packed up your travel money, and set off on your own merchant journey.]

Who would have thought that you, with your extraordinary talent, would engage in several business ventures, only to end up with debts instead of making money? So you decided to turn against the Heavenly Gang and start your own money lending business from scratch, managing to collect money without issuing any. Eventually, you managed to accumulate some wealth.

Later, you took goods you'd acquired from others and went on a trading trip, thinking that since they weren't yours, nothing would go wrong. Little did you expect that your boat would be caught in a flood while crossing the Milky Way. You barely escaped, believing that great fortune awaited you after surviving such a calamity. You settled near the City God Temple in Gaoyin County, where you overheard Hua Zi, soaked in the rain, mentioning a big deal involving the Ascension Sect.

Driven by greed, he poured all his capital into the venture, seeking out the notorious cauldron in Lingnan. However, instead of making a fortune, he lost the cauldron's life and became embroiled in numerous troubles.

Heaven and earth are a single scale, its value used to judge good and evil; those who receive evil receive one tael and one ounce.

[A life destined to leak wealth, pockets overflowing with money. Evaluation: Slightly below the "T" mark. Reward: Grand Opening: Heaven and Earth Treasure.]

A gentleman loves wealth, but acquires it through proper means. Good and evil deeds have their consequences; ill-gotten gains diminish blessings and even shorten one's lifespan.

Li Feng, who had been somewhat pleasantly surprised, felt a chill run down his spine upon seeing the words, sensing something was amiss.

Before Li Feng could ponder, the sound of kowtowing outside grew louder: "Greetings, Master! Kind Master! Master is an auspicious person! Kowtowing and bowing at the door brings wealth! May you keep the door open every night!"

The voice was deep and sinister, growing even more eerie in the darkness. Then, the night watchman, having dropped his clapper, stumbled and cried out, "Damn it, what a coincidence that a jinx has come along to make a fortune..."

Immediately, the west wing door opened by itself without any wind. Li Feng looked up and was surprised to see that the corpse behind him had straightened up and stood up straight from the bed.
