Huo Xiuyuan stood at the door, soaked to the bone, rainwater streaming down his hair and forming a small puddle on the ground.

In the courtyard behind him, the rain was still pouring down, and lightning occasionally ripped through the night sky, illuminating his taut jawline.

Shen Tang peeked out from under the covers, looking at him with tears still on her face, her voice trembling:

"How did you get in?"

"Climb over the wall." Huo Xiuyuan's chest heaved violently.

He closed the door behind him, shutting out the sound of the wind and rain, and the room became quiet.

He stood at the door watching her, then slowly walked over, his eyes filled with heartache.

"Were you scared?" Huo Xiuyuan said gently.

He didn't approach her; he was soaked to the bone, his clothes and pants clinging to his body, and icy rainwater dripping down his clothes.

Shen Tang crawled out from under the covers, her voice still nasal:

"Aren't you afraid of being punished for coming to see me?"

I'm worried about you.

Huo Xiuyuan took out a lighter from his pocket, shook it, and lit it.

He saw the kerosene lamp on the table, leaned closer, and lit it.

The tiny light flickered a few times before slowly igniting.

A small area inside the room was not lit.

Shen Tang sat on the edge of the bed. Huo Xiuyuan entered the room, and the sounds outside seemed less frightening.

"Your clothes are soaked through, hurry up and take them off and wring them out!"

Shen Tang had initially been concerned, but when Huo Xiuyuan lifted the corner of his shirt and started taking off his clothes, her gaze fell upon him in shock.

The soaked fabric clung to her curves, and Shen Tang's face instantly burned.

That's really quite scary.

Huo Xiuyuan took off his shirt and wrung it out forcefully, and water gushed out from the clothes.

Shen Tang put on her shoes, got out of bed, and took a towel from Huo Xiuyuan.

"Wipe it off, don't catch a cold."

After handing over the towel, she sat quietly to the side, her eyes lowered, no longer looking around.

Huo Xiuyuan dried himself off and turned to look at her.

He clearly sensed Shen Tang's distance. "What's wrong with you?"

He crouched down and looked at her.

"Nothing's wrong, the light's on. You...you should go back now," Shen Tang said in a low voice.

Huo Xiuyuan took her hand; his hand was damp, but warm.

"Shen Tang, are you thinking of giving up on me?" Huo Xiuyuan's eyes were fixed on her.

Shen Tang still didn't look at him, pulled her hand back, and whispered:

"Chen Zhongyi is probably my biological father. We can't be together anymore."

As she spoke the last word, Shen Tang bit her tongue hard, afraid that she would burst into tears.

But no matter how hard she tried to hold back, her eyes still reddened, and she turned her head to the side.

"You should leave now! Don't drag this down with you. Let's not see each other again, and go our separate ways to marry."

"What did you say?" Huo Xiuyuan grabbed her arms with both hands, frowning as he stared at her. "Get married separately?"

"Shen Tang, have you forgotten what you promised me? You promised me that you would follow me wherever I went, no divorces, no running away from home, unless I died!"

"Huo Xiuyuan, can you be realistic? My biological father is a murderer. The army won't keep me, and you won't pass the political review. Do you really think you'd give up the army and your bright future for me? Don't be ridiculous. Even I wouldn't give it up. I don't blame you."

As Shen Tang spoke, she gritted her teeth, tilted her head slightly, and stubbornly held back her tears.

Huo Xiuyuan stared at him, tears streaming down his face.

His dark eyes were bloodshot as he stared intently at her. "Shen Tang, everything will be alright. Chen Zhongyi is innocent. He didn't kill anyone. There's more to the story than meets the eye back then. Trust me, I will find out the truth."

"Please don't leave me..." he pleaded, holding her hands and kneeling before her.

Shen Tang stared at him in shock.

Was Chen Zhongyi innocent? But so much time has passed, so even if he was innocent, what difference does it make?

All traces have disappeared. The body of the tyrant from back then has long since rotted away. How can the case be overturned?

The light in Shen Tang's eyes brightened, then dimmed.

She shook her head. "Forget it, it's been twenty years. Even if there are witnesses, they might not be alive anymore. Don't waste your energy."

"Shen Tang," Huo Xiuyuan gazed intently at her, "you're giving up on me so easily?"

Huo Xiuyuan's tears streamed down his face, and his lips trembled slightly.

Shen Tang patted his arm. "Stand up first, the ground is cold."

Huo Xiuyuan didn't stand up; instead, he pulled her into a tight embrace. His bare upper body was burning hot, soothing Shen Tang's body and soul.

Shen Tang hugged him. "It's okay if I'm not in the cultural troupe anymore, but you're different. I know you love the army and the barracks. Sister Manny told me that when your family wanted you to go into business, you absolutely refused. In the end, you escaped from the third floor and joined the army."

She didn't want Huo Xiuyuan to give up his ideals and the life he wanted for her. She would feel guilty for the rest of her life if he did.

"Trust me, I will find out the truth! Don't give up." Huo Xiuyuan loosened his grip on her a little and looked up at her.

Shen Tang cupped his face, wiped away the tears from the corners of his eyes, and gently placed a kiss on his forehead.

"it is good."

Huo Xiuyuan smiled and hugged Shen Tang tightly once again.

Shen Tang pulled him up from the ground and sat him on the edge of the bed.

Huo Xiuyuan looked at her and said, "You should be able to leave tomorrow. But Chen Zhongyi's case is more complicated than I thought. The case was closed so hastily back then. Besides the pressure from above, someone was pulling strings behind the scenes. The case files from back then have all disappeared."

"So, there really are some suspicious points in this matter?" Shen Tang frowned.

"My father was teaching in Hexi Town that year, and I lived there for a while," Huo Xiuyuan said. "When Chen Zhongyi was arrested, I was watching from the crowd. I believe what he said; his expression at the time was one of shock and confusion, but without any of the murderous intent that comes with killing someone."

Shen Tang pursed her lips. "Where is he now?"

"I arranged for him to stay in a secluded courtyard. The night he said he was leaving, I went out and intercepted him. Before I arrived, he was attacked by three men, and it was probably around that time that they took his hair for a paternity test."

"It should be Li Meihua," Shen Tang said.

Huo Xiuyuan nodded. "In that murder case back then, Li Meihua's mother was also at the scene. Li Meihua was only three years old at the time, and Chen Zhongyi must have been recognized by her mother. That's why she reported you."

"In the end, it's all my fault," Huo Xiuyuan said guiltily.

"Yes, it's all your fault. You're such a flirt!"

Shen Tang glared at him, but a smile played on her lips.

Huo Xiuyuan felt relieved when he saw a smile on her face.

He hugged Shen Tang tightly and whispered in her ear, "Wife."

Shen Tang felt a chill run down her spine when he called out to her.

"Call me husband." Huo Xiuyuan looked down at her.
