On the day Gu Nian left, it rained lightly in Baizhi Valley.

The rain was light, a fine, dense drizzle that moistened the medicinal herb fields and the newly turned soil until it turned black.

Gu Huaishan drove his car to the valley entrance early in the morning and waited.

Auntie carried the luggage piece by piece into the trunk, including two packets of medicine prescribed by Su Qinghan, a box of moonflower seedlings that Ayiguli had divided up, and several packets of Anhetang herbal tea that Shen Jingqiu had given her.

Gu Nian stood at the entrance of the medicine shop, holding her potted flower seedling in her hands, not in a hurry to get into the car.

Ye Chen came out of the medicine shop, holding the written prescription in his hand.

He handed it to Gu Huaishan and said, "Twice a day, after breakfast and dinner. Come back after three months."

Gu Huaishan took it, folded it, and put it in his inner pocket.

Gu Nian walked over, stood next to her father, and looked up at Ye Chen.

She said, "Dr. Ye, thank you."

Ye Chen said, "We should thank Guli; she's the one who grew the herbs."

Gu Nian nodded and then looked at Ayiguli standing at the entrance of the greenhouse.

Aygul didn't come over; she just stood there at a distance, clutching a handful of freshly pulled weeds in her hand.

Gu Nian raised the flowerpot in her hand and shook it.

Aygul saw this and raised the grass in her hand in response.

Neither of them laughed, but they both understood.

Jiang Ruoxi came out of the house and handed Gu Nian an umbrella, saying, "Use this on the way, don't get wet."

Gu Nian accepted the call and whispered, "Goodbye, Sister Jiang."

Jiang Ruoxi reached out and patted her shoulder, without saying anything more.

Gu Huaishan cupped his hands in greeting to the crowd, then turned and got into the car.

As the car started, Gu Nian leaned out of the window and glanced again toward the greenhouse.

Aygul had already turned around and squatted at the entrance of the shed to continue weeding.

Gu Nian noticed that she paused for a moment while pulling weeds, as if waiting for the car to drive away before continuing.

After the car drove away, Ye Chen walked to the entrance of the greenhouse and squatted down next to Ayiguli.

He said, "You can't bear to part with it?"

Aygul pulled up a blade of grass, shook off the soil from the roots, and said, "What's there to be reluctant about? As long as she gets better, that's all that matters."

Ye Chen said, "Then why were you standing at the door for so long without moving?"

Aygul ignored him, stood up, threw the grass into the basket, turned around and went into the shed to continue working.

Ye Chen smiled and followed him inside to help.

That afternoon, Su Qinghan packed her medicine box, preparing to return to Medicine King Valley.

Before leaving, she stood at the entrance of the medicine shop and said to Ye Chen, "Remember this case. If you encounter tidal disease again in the future, treat it in this way."

Ye Chen agreed.

Su Qinghan added, "That girl grows moonflowers very well. Have her grow another batch this summer; Medicine King Valley wants them too."

Ye Chen said, "Okay, I'll talk to her."

Su Qinghan nodded, picked up her medicine box, and left.

Ye Chen stood at the door and watched her turn into the mountain path. He felt that his master's back seemed more relaxed and his steps were lighter than before.

A few days later, Gu Huaishan called.

They said that after Gu Nian went home, she took her medicine on time, slept more soundly than before, and had a better appetite.

The potted moonflower was placed on her windowsill, and after watering it for a few days, it actually sprouted new buds.

Gu Huaishan said on the phone, "She looks at that potted plant every day, like it's a treasure."

Ye Chen smiled and said, "That flower is easy to grow. Tell her not to water it too much, or the roots will rot."

Gu Huaishan readily agreed.

After hanging up the phone, Ye Chen relayed these words to Ayiguli.

Aygul was dividing the new batch of seedlings into pots in the greenhouse. After listening, she hummed in agreement, but her movements became noticeably lighter.

With the arrival of April, spring plowing in Baizhi Valley has become extremely busy.

The angelica seedlings on the south slope have just sprouted, the astragalus on the north slope need topdressing, and the moonflowers in the greenhouse are ready for transplanting.

Seventh Uncle spent every day in the fields, his voice became hoarse from shouting, but he was more energetic than anyone else.

Shen Jingqiu sent a batch of newly made medicinal fertilizer from Nancheng, along with a note: Grandpa said he would go to Jiangcheng to check on the medicinal herb fields this autumn.

Ye Chen handed the note to Jiang Ruoxi, and they both laughed.

Shen Bo'an had been talking about "coming in autumn" for several years, and this year it was finally confirmed.

One evening, Ye Chen sat on a rock outside the greenhouse to rest.

Aygul came out of the shed, holding a pot of newly transplanted moonflowers, and said, "This pot is for Ruoxi, put it on the windowsill in her office."

Ye Chen took it and looked at it. The seedling wasn't big, but its leaves were a bright green and its roots were firmly planted.

"Are you willing to part with it?"

Aygul said, "There are plenty of seedlings, what's wrong with giving her one?"

Ye Chen smiled and carefully placed the flowerpot on the shelf next to him.

The two sat on a rock, watching the setting sun turn the medicinal herb field golden in the distance.

Aygul suddenly said, "When she left, she thanked me, but I ignored her."

Ye Chen asked, "Why?"

Aygul thought for a moment and said, "I don't know, maybe she thinks, no need to thank me, it's enough that she's better."

Ye Chen nodded and didn't ask any further questions.

That night, Ye Chen brought the pot of moonflowers back to Jiangcheng.

Jiang Ruoxi saw the flowerpot and said, "Did Guli give it to you?"

Ye Chen said, "Okay, I'll let you put it in your office."

Jiang Ruoxi held the flowerpot up to the light and looked at it, saying, "These flowers are really small, but they look quite vibrant."

Ye Chen said, "Everything from the Guli tribe is full of vitality."

Jiang Ruoxi placed the flowerpot on the windowsill and watered it a little more.

The two stood by the window, looking at the small pot of moonflowers.

Outside the window, the lights of countless homes in Jiangcheng shone; inside, the familiar scent of medicine filled the air.

Ye Chen suddenly felt that he had been busy with the same thing all year, from the beginning of spring until now.

Planting medicinal herbs, harvesting medicinal herbs, sending medicinal herbs, and treating people's illnesses.

Trivial, ordinary.

But every single one of them was real. He put his arm around Jiang Ruoxi's shoulder and said, "When Grandpa Shen comes in the fall, I'll take him to Baizhi Valley to see the medicinal fields, and then I'll take him to Medicine King Valley to see Master."

Jiang Ruoxi said, "Okay, let's invite everyone then. It'll be a lively affair."

Ye Chen said, "Yeah, it's lively."

The two of them stood there, looking at the moon and flowers for a while, and then at the night outside the window for a while.

The lamplight cast a soft glow, and the flowers and leaves swayed gently.

Like many, many ordinary nights.

The days are getting warmer.

At the end of April, Baizhi Valley received its first order from Nancheng.

It was a medicinal herb merchant introduced by Shen Jingqiu who wanted a batch of top-quality astragalus and angelica.

Jiang Ruoxi negotiated the price with the other party and then had the finance department process the formal contract.

The day after the contract was signed, Shen Jingqiu called specifically to say that the herbal medicine merchant was a regular customer of Anhetang and could be trusted.

Ye Chen said, "I trust the people you introduced."

Shen Jingqiu chuckled on the other end of the phone and said, "Brother Ye, Grandpa asked me to ask one more question: when Qiu Tian comes, could you take him to see Medicine King Valley?"

Ye Chen said, "Yes, I'll take you there. Master said she'll cook for you herself."

Shen Jingqiu was so happy that she said "good" three times in a row.

In early May, the second batch of moonflower seedlings sprouted.

Aygul counted them and found that there were almost twice as many as the first batch.

She kept some of them to transplant to a shady spot on the south slope, and gave the rest to her seventh uncle and Shen Jingqiu.

Seventh Uncle held the seedling, examining it from left to right, and said, "This stuff really can stop coughing?"

Aygul said, "Yes, Master Su said that if you collect it in the summer and mix it into the medicine, it will be milder than mugwort."

Seventh Uncle carefully planted the seedlings in the experimental field and marked them with a bamboo stick.

One evening, Ye Chen sat in the courtyard polishing his sword.

Aygul came out of the house, holding the short knife in her hand, and sat down next to him.

The two of them wiped their own surfaces.

Ye Chen asked, "Now that you're back, are you leaving again?"

Aygul thought for a moment and said, "I'll go there next spring to see my cousin and check out that land. I'll stay for a month or two and then come back."

Ye Chen said, "Aren't you tired of running back and forth?"

Aygul said, "We don't have to make a fuss. We have things to do on both sides. That side is the medicinal herb field, and this side is our home."

Ye Chen flipped the sword over and continued wiping it, saying, "Okay, let me know in advance when you're going, and I'll book the tickets for you."

Aygul hummed in agreement.

That night, Ye Chen had a dream.

In his dream, he stood in the middle of a vast medicinal field, with endless rows of ridges, each growing different herbs.

Astragalus, angelica, angelica dahurica, licorice, moonflower, and others he couldn't name.

A breeze blew from afar, carrying the scent of herbs in waves. He looked down at his hands and found he was clutching a handful of seeds.

He didn't know where to plant them, so he just scattered them on the ground.

The seeds sprouted as soon as they landed and grew very quickly.

He stood there for a while, then heard someone call his name from behind.

He turned around and saw Su Qinghan standing by the field, still wearing that blue cloth shirt, and her hair was still white.

She waved to him and said, "Come and take a look. This is the land your father wanted to cultivate back then."

Ye Chen walked over and saw someone standing next to Su Qinghan.

The man had his back to him; he was thin and wore an old gray cloth shirt.

Ye Chen knew who it was, but he couldn't see their face clearly.

The man didn't turn around, but simply pointed into the distance and said, "I'm leaving it all to you."
