At the end of October, a letter arrived in the south of the city.

The letter was written by Shen Jingqiu; it was short, and the handwriting was a bit messy than usual.

She said that her grandfather hadn't been in good spirits lately, didn't go out much, and didn't talk much. He just sat in the yard all day looking at the magnolia tree.

I eat very little and sleep very lightly.

She asked Su Qinghan if he had time to come over, but said there was no rush and it might be ready in a few days.

Ye Chen read the letter twice, and his heart skipped a beat.

Shen Bo'an is a person who never speaks ill of himself.

When he left last month, I stood at the alley entrance to see him off, and smiled as I said, "Come back next autumn."

It's only been a month, and you haven't gone out at all?

He showed the letter to Su Qinghan.

After reading the letter, Su Qinghan folded it neatly and said, "Go there. I'll leave tomorrow."

Ye Chen said, "Master, I'll go with you."

Su Qinghan said, "You stay here. Baizhi Valley has other matters to attend to. I'll take a look and come back soon."

Ye Chen thought about it and didn't insist.

But he called Shen Jingqiu back and told her to contact him anytime if she needed anything.

Su Qinghan left early the next morning.

Ye Chen took her to the station, and she didn't say much on the way.

Ye Chen knew she was worried, but she wasn't used to showing her worry on her face.

Before getting into the car, Su Qinghan said, "Shen Bo'an has been holding on his whole life. Don't let his thin appearance fool you, he's tough. But tough people can break easily."

Ye Chen said, "Go and take a look, see what the problem is."

Su Qinghan nodded and got into the car.

On the third day after Su Qinghan arrived in Nancheng, she called Ye Chen.

Her voice sounded a bit deeper than usual on the phone. She said, "Shen Bo'an is exhausted. He hasn't let go of Anhetang's affairs for the past few months. Although Jingqiu has taken on most of the work, some old patients only recognize him as the one who has been holding on for two months, which has depleted his health. Plus, the autumn chill has caused him to have a slight lung infection. It's not serious, but at his age, once his health is weakened, his recovery will be slow."

Ye Chen asked, "Is it serious?"

Su Qinghan said, "It's not a big deal if it's urgent, but you need to rest. You can't see patients for at least a month."

Ye Chen breathed a sigh of relief and then asked, "How is Jingqiu?"

Su Qinghan said, "That girl is stubborn, but I see dark circles under her eyes. She probably hasn't been sleeping well for the past few months."

Ye Chen said, "How about I have Jiang Ruoxi go over and help out for a few days? Her company can arrange it."

Su Qinghan said, "Ask her if they need someone to manage things here."

Ye Chen said, "I'll ask right now."

Upon hearing that Shen Bo'an was ill, Jiang Ruoxi immediately began arranging her work without saying a word.

The next day, she handed over the company's affairs to Secretary Wang and drove to Nancheng.

Before leaving, Ye Chen asked her to take Ayiguli and the jar of freshly brewed He'an ointment with her.

Aygul didn't want to go at first, saying that the moonflowers in the greenhouse needed to be divided into separate pots.

Ye Chen said, "I'll water the flowers for you. Go to Nancheng and help Jingqiu look after the pharmacy for a few days. She can't manage it all by herself."

Aygul thought for a moment and finally nodded.

When Jiang Ruoxi arrived in Nancheng, Su Qinghan had already stayed at Anhetang for two days.

She arranged for Shen Bo'an to recuperate in the backyard, taking his pulse twice a day, morning and evening, and prescribed a formula to nourish his lungs and replenish his qi for Shen Jingqiu to prepare.

Shen Bo'an lay on the bed in the backyard, his face much yellower than last month, but when he saw Jiang Ruoxi and Ayiguli come in, he still managed to sit up with difficulty.

"Why are you all here? I'm fine, just dry from the autumn heat, a couple of doses of medicine will do the trick."

Jiang Ruoxi placed the He'an ointment on the table and said, "This is freshly made by Master Su. Take one spoonful each morning and evening."

Shen Bo'an looked at the jar of ointment and said, "He'an Ointment, my grandfather's recipe."

Jiang Ruoxi said, "Now it's your prescription, made by Yaowang Valley and Baizhi Valley together."

Shen Bo'an didn't say anything more, but his eyes lit up.

Jiang Ruoxi took over the front desk of Anhetang.

She may not be able to treat patients, but she can arrange for patients to wait for their appointments, record prescriptions, answer the phone, and negotiate purchases with herbal medicine suppliers.

She had been doing these things at the Jiang Group for over a decade, and she was just as adept at it in a different setting.

With her help, Shen Jingqiu was finally able to catch her breath and sleep two more hours each day.

Aygul is in charge of the medicine cabinet.

She could dispense medicine faster than Shen Jingqiu, and she never made a mistake.

Shen Jingqiu once watched her prepare aconite and asked her, "How do you remember the dosage of each herb?"

Aygul said, "My adoptive father's notebook contained more than 300 commonly used medicines, which I memorized."

Shen Jingqiu paused for a moment, then didn't ask any more questions.

Shen Bo'an lay in bed for ten days before Su Qinghan allowed him to get out of bed and walk a few steps.

He was wearing a thick cotton-padded coat and using crutches as he slowly moved into the yard.

The sun was shining brightly on the magnolia tree; the leaves were still green, but it had stopped blooming.

Shen Bo'an sat down in the rattan chair and looked at the tree for a long time.

Su Qinghan brought over a bowl of medicine and handed it to him. He took it, drank a sip, and said, "Qinghan, have I been a burden to you this time?"

Su Qinghan said, "What are you dragging down? Just sitting here is helping."

Shen Bo'an smiled and said, "What I fear most in my life is being idle. When I'm idle, I feel useless."

Su Qinghan said, "Who said that? With you here, Anhe Hall has a pillar of support. Jingqiu is still counting on you to teach her."

Shen Bo'an didn't say anything more, but his hand holding the medicine bowl became steadyer.

On the thirteenth day, Shen Bo'an began to explain the prescription to Shen Jingqiu.

He sat in the courtyard, and Shen Jingqiu moved a small table next to him, listening and taking notes.

He spoke in great detail about the ingredients of He'an Ointment, from the selection of Sichuan fritillary bulbs to the harvesting time of moonflowers.

Shen Jingqiu remembered very quickly, and occasionally asked, "Is this proportion different from the one in the master book?" Shen Bo'an would nod and say, "Yes, I changed it."

"If using in autumn, reduce the amount of fritillaria by one qian."

Jiang Ruoxi listened from the side and felt that this scene was more precious than any prescription.

Su Qinghan sat on the veranda grinding medicine, her ears perked up.

Occasionally, she would interject with something like, "You're doing the right thing with your weight loss, but you can't lose the moonflower oil," and Shen Bo'an would argue with her for a few moments.

The two old people argued over the prescription until they were red in the face, but after they finished arguing, they went back to drinking tea together.

Ye Chen would call every two days.

Jiang Ruoxi told him that Shen Bo'an was much better; he could walk, explain the prescription, and even argue with Su Qinghan.

Ye Chen laughed on the other end of the phone and said, "It's good that we can argue. It means you're back to your old self."

Jiang Ruoxi asked, "How's it going on your end? Have you watered the flowers in the greenhouse?"

Ye Chen said, "I did water it. Seventh Uncle helped, but he complained that I watered it too much and kicked me out."

Jiang Ruoxi laughed out loud.

By the twentieth day, Shen Bo'an was able to walk to the alley entrance on his own.

He stood under the old locust tree, watching the people coming and going in the alley.

An old neighbor came over and greeted him, saying, "Dr. Shen, I haven't seen you for several days."

Shen Bo'an said, "I was sick for a few days, but I'm better now." The old neighbor said, "When will you open for consultations? My husband is waiting for you to take a look at him."

Shen Bo'an said, "In a few days, Jingqiu will be at the pharmacy. If it's urgent, go to her."

The old neighbor agreed and left.

Shen Bo'an stood at the alley entrance, watched for a while, and then slowly walked back into the courtyard.

Jiang Ruoxi was tidying up the medicine cabinet when she saw him return and said, "Grandpa Shen, you look great today."

Shen Bo'an said, "I'm much better. Go back and tell Ye Chen that I'm better, and tell him not to worry about me."

Jiang Ruoxi said, "You tell him yourself, he talks about it every day."

Shen Bo'an smiled, sat down in the rattan chair, and basked in the sun.

The sunlight shone on him, making his thin face look warm and radiant.

The leaves of the magnolia tree rustled softly in the wind.

It's as if it's saying, spring is not far away.
