Chapter 386 Top Secret Meeting
After the box was taken away by the guard, the three people in the conference room sat there silently without saying a word.
Old Gao and Old Li's gazes fell on Jiang Zhiyu, scrutinizing her from head to toe, as if they were seeing her for the first time. How many people had been swallowed up by the surging tides of history to give this country such a person?
Jiang Zhiyu felt uncomfortable under their gazes and picked up her teacup to take a sip.
"Grandpa, don't look at me like that. I don't have any flowers on my face."
Old Gao didn't respond to that question, but leaned forward slightly.
"Let's not talk about that now. Girl, let's continue talking about that passage you mentioned. You said the passage is subject to your control; is it a limitation on the number of people it can accommodate, or something else?"
"I haven't tested the number of people yet, so I don't know how many people I can carry at once," Jiang Zhiyu said, putting down her teacup. "But two things are certain now. First, the existence of the passage is tied to me. As long as I'm here, the passage exists; if I leave, the passage disappears. Second, and most importantly right now, the locations at both ends of the passage must be chosen with utmost care."
Old Li nodded.
"You're afraid of being discovered."
"Yes. If we're going to conduct scientific research on the moon, we can't let other countries find out anything. The location on the other side of the moon needs to be carefully chosen, and the location on our side in China needs to be even more carefully chosen. Both ends must be places that outsiders absolutely cannot touch or even imagine."
Old Gao and Old Li exchanged a glance.
His call ignited a nationwide effort. Urgent notices were issued, chartered planes were arranged, and only the most experienced professionals from their respective fields could be summoned. Some were called back from experimental stations deep in the Gobi Desert, while others boarded planes at research institutes in the remote mountains of the south. When they received the calls, no one asked many questions, only informing them of their arrival time and reporting location.
After making the call, Mr. Gao said that it would take a whole day for everyone to get together, so the meeting was scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow.
"Girl, do you think this is okay?"
"I'm fine with it." Jiang Zhiyu paused, "Just one question: are these people reliable?"
Both Mr. Gao and Mr. Li nodded at the same time.
"Absolutely reliable."
"Okay, then tomorrow morning at nine o'clock."
...
The next morning at nine o'clock, in the same top-secret conference room.
The curtains were drawn tightly, and the room was brightly lit. When Jiang Zhiyu arrived, more than a dozen people were already seated on both sides of the long table. Some were wearing Zhongshan suits, some had rushed over in work clothes, and there was even an old professor with ink stains on his lapel, clearly having been dragged directly from his desk. The whole room was solemn and dignified.
She sat down next to Old Gao. Old Gao stood up, his gaze sweeping over everyone's faces, and the room immediately became so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
"We have gathered here today for this meeting. This meeting is classified as Top Secret; there are no archives and no written records. After the meeting, you are not allowed to discuss it privately, nor are you allowed to disclose any part of its content to anyone around you, including relatives, secretaries, and staff."
He paused, his voice lowering.
"The matter we are discussing today concerns the future of the entire nation, its implications far exceeding any of your previous understanding. Every word spoken in this room, every piece of intelligence, idea, and plan, must remain here. If even the slightest information leaks out and falls into the hands of foreign powers, it will bring immeasurable disaster to the country and directly push us into an extremely dangerous situation."
"Let me make this clear from the outset: the contents of today's meeting are strictly prohibited from being leaked to any outsider. Anyone who leaks information will be treated as a traitor, and there will be absolutely no leniency."
"Now, let's officially begin the meeting."
The heavy alloy door slammed shut and locked, cutting off all outside noise.
The guard behind Old Gao brought in the box of soil and gently placed it in the center of the long table.
Everyone had received the call late last night and rushed back on a private jet; they all understood the significance of this event. A meeting where Old Gao would use the term "treason" to seal the deal was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. But as serious as they were, when they saw that the table contained only a box of dirt, their expressions turned strange.
Geologists stared at the box of soil, as did as astronomy experts; each a leader in their respective field, they looked at each other, speechless. Had they taken a private jet and rushed back overnight just to see a box of soil?
Looking at everyone's expressions, Old Gao spoke slowly and deliberately.
Do you know what this is?
The crowd below all shook their heads.
Old Gao's next sentence stunned everyone on the spot.
"This is lunar soil."
The room full of crazy researchers stood up in unison, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a series of screeching sounds, and one chair, which hadn't been placed properly, crashed to the ground with a thud, but no one bothered to help it up.
The chemists, geologists, and astronomers were all incredulous, their eyes fixed on that handful of soil. The elderly astronomer, in particular, looked at the soil, then at Old Gao, his lips trembling, his hands shaking as he gripped the table, waiting for Old Gao to confirm it again.
This time, Old Gao didn't lower his voice.
"You heard me right, this is lunar soil, personally collected from the moon."
The room full of luminaries stared wide-eyed, their hands trembling as they reached out to touch it, only to pull back halfway, as if afraid of getting burned. Someone took a handkerchief from their pocket, wiped their hands, then pulled out a pair of white gloves, put them on with trembling hands, and only then dared to reach towards the box again.
Looking at the excited crowd below, Old Gao smiled knowingly. He hadn't fared much better yesterday.
"Some of you here know each other, and some don't. From now on, we'll be working together as a team. We'll be divided into five groups: Aerospace, Geology, Engineering and Infrastructure, Intelligence, and Medical. The list of group leaders will be provided separately after this meeting."
No one answered; everyone's eyes were still fixed on the box of soil.
Old Gao didn't urge him. He picked up his teacup, took a sip, and slowly added a comment.
"Return your divine powers. From this day forward, your research subjects will be 380,000 kilometers away."
The room fell silent for a moment, then erupted into a hushed discussion. Some people were rubbing their hands excitedly, while others had already opened their notebooks.
