Chapter 690 You're Not Asleep
"You're not asleep," Lu Chen said.
"No." Lin Qi closed his eyes. "Dealing with garbage is a waste of energy."
Lu Chen stared at the screen. Green code flowed by.
"The coordinates of the TV tower have changed," Lu Chen said.
Lin Qi opened his eyes and leaned closer to look. The red dot on the screen was moving. It wasn't moving fast, but its position had deviated from its original point.
"Can buildings move?" Lin Qi asked.
"Spatial folding. The evil god is playing a jigsaw puzzle." Lu Chen typed on the keyboard, locking onto the red dot's trajectory. "Every morning at six o'clock, the city's tiles will rearrange. We must find the gaps as the tiles move and slip through."
"Okay." Lin Qi sat down again.
Six o'clock. Dawn breaks. It's still gray and hazy.
The ground began to shake. Items fell from the shelves. The glass door frame creaked and twisted. The floor tiles cracked.
"Let's go." Lu Chen unplugged the data cable. The terminal hung on his wrist.
The two walked out of the convenience store.
The streets outside are cracking. A huge crack has split open in the middle of the asphalt road. The crack is bottomless. The street on the left is rising. The street on the right is sinking. High-rise buildings are pressing against each other. Blocks of concrete are falling.
The laws of physics have gone awry.
Lin Qi looked ahead. An office building hung upside down in the sky. The roof faced downwards, the foundation upwards. People inside had fallen out, crashing into the clouds and disappearing.
"The route," Lin Qi said.
Lu Chen looked at the terminal. "Ten o'clock. Skip that crack. There's a stable data channel."
Lin Qi took a running start. Stepping onto the edge of the road, she jumped. She cleared the three-meter-wide crack. Landing, she rolled to absorb the impact. She stood up. Her left arm stung slightly, but she ignored it.
Lu Chen jumped over after him. He landed very steadily.
The two walked along the sunken street. The shops on both sides were crushed and deformed. Glass signs were shattered all over the ground.
A group of crawling monsters appeared ahead. They looked like humans. They were on all fours. They had no skin. Their muscles were bright red. Their eyes were on their backs.
Ten of them. Blocking the only way to the TV tower. Their tongues lolling out, licking the cement dust on the ground.
Lin Qi drew his short knife. He held the knife in his right hand and slowed his pace.
"Save your energy. I'll do it," Lu Chen said.
He raised his hand. The terminal glowed green. A translucent green keyboard appeared in the air. He typed rapidly, his fingers leaving afterimages.
The gravitational field in front has changed.
Ten crawling monsters suddenly floated up, their limbs flailing wildly in the air, unable to reach the ground, emitting sharp cries.
Lin Qi walked forward, until she reached the suspended monsters. She swung her knife in her right hand, severing their throats. One after another, blood rained down. She dodged the drops, avoiding any blood on herself.
The monster fell to the ground. It died.
The two walked through the horde of monsters. The television tower was just ahead.
The TV tower was different from the one they had seen last time. It was covered in a black, fleshy membrane. Blood vessels pulsated on the membrane. The spire pierced the gray clouds.
The main gate at the base of the tower was gone. It had become a giant, fleshy hole, opening and closing, spewing out red mist.
"Go in," Lin Qi said.
She walked to the opening. When it opened, she slipped inside.
Lu Chen followed behind.
The passage was slippery. It felt springy underfoot. Glowing vesicles adorned the fleshy walls on both sides, illuminating the passage.
Lin Qi walked ahead. The short sword was confiscated.
"This place is alive." Lu Chen touched the wall. The slime stretched out. "The entire TV tower has become a biological computer. Flesh and blood have replaced silicon-based materials."
"Is the evil god inside?" Lin Qi asked.
"This is his stomach. Or his brain." Lu Chen looked at the terminal. "The signal source is on the top floor."
They went down into the elevator shaft. The elevator car was gone. Only the dangling steel cables remained, covered in black fungus.
"Climb up." Lin Qi bit the short knife in his mouth. He grabbed the steel cable with his right hand and tested its load-bearing capacity. The cable was very sturdy.
I can't use my left hand. I can only rely on one hand and both legs.
She jumped up. Her legs gripped the steel cable. She pulled upwards with her right hand. Her body rose. The movement was slow. It was very strenuous.
Lu Chen watched from below. He didn't help. He knew Lin Qi didn't need it. He grabbed another steel cable and started climbing.
Lin Qi climbed more than ten floors. He stopped to catch his breath. Sweat streamed down his forehead and into his eyes. They stung.
She spat out the dagger from her mouth. Her left elbow hooked onto the steel cable. Her right hand caught the dagger. She sheathed it.
A sound came from above. A squeaking sound. Like a mouse.
In the darkness, a dozen enormous black beetles crawled down a steel cable. They were the size of washbasins, with large, gleaming pincers.
Lin Qi looked up at the beetle.
There is no escape route.
She drew her pistol. She released the safety with one hand. She aimed at the top beetle. She fired.
Gunshots echoed through the elevator shaft. Deafeningly loud.
The bullet struck the beetle's carapace. It bounced off. Sparks flew. The carapace was very hard.
The beetle accelerated its descent.
Lu Chen was below. He tapped the terminal. The backup light in the elevator shaft turned on.
"Attack the abdomen. Chitinous immune kinetic weapon," Lu Chen shouted.
Lin Qi tucked the gun back into his waistband and drew his short knife.
The beetle crawled up to him. Its pincers clamped down on Lin Qi's neck.
Lin Qi loosened her legs, which were gripping the steel cable. Her body fell. Just as the beetle passed her, she swung her knife with her right hand. The tip pierced the beetle's soft abdomen. She pulled it down. Green sap flowed out.
She gripped the steel cable again with her legs, stopping her fall.
The beetle fell in and hit the bottom of the well.
There are a lot more.
Lin Qi looked at the beetle above. "Lu Chen. Pull the switch."
Lu Chen understood what she meant. He located the high-voltage cable on the elevator shaft wall. He pulled out the dagger from his thigh and cut through the cable's outer sheath. The metal wire was exposed.
He modified the direction of the current. The high-voltage electricity was conducted upwards along the steel cable.
"Let go!" Lu Chen shouted.
Lin Qi's legs loosened. His body plummeted into the air. His right hand left the steel cable.
An electric current passed through. Blue arcs of electricity leaped across the steel cable. The beetles on it were electrocuted, black smoke billowed, and they all fell to the ground.
Lin Qi plummeted through the air. She looked at the maintenance door on the wall.
They were close. She plunged the dagger into the fleshy membrane of the wall with her right hand, slowing her descent.
The blade sliced through the membrane. Sparks flew. The bottom layer was still metal.
She stopped in front of the maintenance door. She kicked it open and rolled inside.
Lu Chen jumped in after him and landed.
The two lay on the metal floor of the maintenance passageway, panting.
Lin Qi sat up. The wound on his left arm had reopened. Blood seeped through the gauze and dripped onto the ground.
She ignored it. She kept looking ahead down the passage.
"The top floor. How much further?" Lin Qi asked.
Lu Chen checked the terminal. "Tenth floor. Take the stairs."
The two stood up and walked towards the stairwell.
The walls in the stairwell are white. There's no membrane. The original structure of the building has been preserved. The steps are concrete. The handrails are iron. They're rusty.
Lin Qi walked in front. Lu Chen followed behind. The sound of boots clicking on the steps was rhythmic.
I walked up to the iron door to the rooftop. The door was locked. It was an electronic lock. A red light was flashing on it.
Lu Chen walked over. The terminal connected to the electronic lock. Hacking.
Three seconds. The red light turned green. The door opened.
I pushed open the door. A gust of wind blew in. A strong wind. It carried a foul odor.
