Chapter 3 The Godfather
As the sun set, the streets were filled with unemployed horse-drawn carriages.
Alchemy workshops and private magician tutoring classes lit up everywhere.
Inside the carriage, Pharos and Simon sat facing each other, each holding a copy of the Castilian Evening News, except that Pharos was holding yesterday's edition.
Reading newspapers was a regular form of entertainment on the carriage. In a world without mobile phones, passing the time was actually quite torturous.
"Oh dear, the economy is getting worse and worse, and another imperial colony has declared independence."
Simon flicked his cigarette ash out the window.
After the Empire's defeat in its second colonial war, commodity prices soared, and people became increasingly busy and poorer, including those in Dawntown.
Everyone knows that as the pie stops growing, if you miss the last train of the Industrial Revolution, the times will teach you a lesson.
Pharos had already been taught a lesson in his previous life, but he never expected to face the same situation again.
"How about we talk about the commission instead?" Pharos changed the subject, "What's so special about this incident that Miss Serena had to come all the way here to commission it?"
"Don't talk about it outside," Simon said, deliberately lowering his voice. "Because this time it's the Godfather who's been attacked. What will the outside world think if the Mafia Godfather is attacked by a vengeful spirit? They don't want to make a big deal out of it, and they don't want their subordinates to know."
"Moretti...the Godfather?" Pharos exclaimed in surprise.
Even the crow above their heads was startled.
To the average person, the attack on the Mafia godfather must mean he's done something heinous again, so it's not surprising.
The problem is that the Moretti family is reportedly trying to whitewash their image and is now at a crucial stage in shedding their Mafia label, so they have to suppress the matter.
"Hey, hey, keep your voice down," Simon warned. "We'll just do our thing, exorcise the demon, and get out of here. Don't get involved in anything else, understand?"
Pharos nodded thoughtfully.
He looked out the window at the afterglow of the setting sun, wondering if that once glorious sun could still rise as usual.
Moretti Estate.
In addition to villas, there is even a parking lot here.
The internal combustion engine is now an invention, but widespread adoption is still a long way off.
Serena offered to pick her up by car, but Detective Simon refused, citing the need to avoid suspicion.
As the carriage approached the villa, Pharos immediately spotted a white shadowy figure hovering inside.
"What's wrong? What did you find?" Mr. Simon asked hurriedly.
"It's a vengeful spirit, indoors, in human form."
"I knew I hadn't misjudged you, Pharos, you are a genius of 'Spirit'," Simon exclaimed. "From this distance, I can only see a cloud of white mist."
"My boss, you're flattering me to death. I remember you're a retired lecturer in the 'Spirit' department of a magic university. How could I possibly compare to you?" Pharos said.
"No, you are the student with the most exaggerated 'spiritual' talent I have ever seen." Simon shook his head and denied it.
Pharos hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but then stopped.
That's right.
Simon Wayne's inability to see Miss Raven is the best proof of this, and Miss Raven has always been in a state of "spirit".
At first, Pharos thought that his ability to see Miss Raven might simply be due to his talent in the "spirit".
But as he spent more time with Detective Simon, he discovered that his "spirit" was quite unique, even on a macro scale.
Inside the villa, in the reception room.
The dimly lit room was illuminated only by a table lamp. The old godfather, Lorenzo, leaned back in a leather chair, wrapped in a blanket.
Granddaughter Serena, dressed in a navy blue dress, stood by her side.
Several middle-aged men and a glamorous woman in an off-the-shoulder dress were sitting around.
Pharos guessed that one of them was Miss Serena's father.
That woman must be Miss Serena's mother. She looked very young, exuding a flamboyant and mature charm, completely different from Serena, their styles were in stark contrast.
The old Godfather was clearly cold, but his tone remained calm:
"As you can see, my friend Simon Wayne, I'm not in the best of shape, but if you can help me out, I think I can owe you a favor."
Lorenzo seemed to be putting on a brave face, his tone completely calm, as if being haunted by a vengeful spirit was nothing more than a trivial flu.
But Simon and Farrow could not be fooled by the visible weakness in his body.
Pharos knew from whom Miss Serena had learned her nonchalant tone.
Was it a favor from the Godfather?
Pharos was somewhat moved.
Following Detective Simon's instructions, Pharos stared intently at the two white figures floating above the Godfather's head.
As for the negotiations and deals between Detective Simon and Godfather Lorenzo, Faros couldn't be bothered with them.
He doesn't consider himself particularly diligent and doesn't want to think about things that don't concern him.
"Godfather, I need a quiet environment." Detective Simon looked around.
Godfather Lorenzo nodded slightly and gestured, "Take our detective to the basement."
The basement was a closed space; once the gas lamp was lit, it was just a typical storage room with ventilation pipes.
Simon looked around and cleared out a 3-square-meter area, then asked, "Can you confirm the number of vengeful spirits?"
Pharos confirmed again, "Just two."
"Hmm~ just two. What do you think of those two vengeful spirits?" Simon pondered for a moment.
Pharos thought about it carefully and said:
"The 'spirits' of vengeful spirits are all very strong. Strangely, none of them have any murderous intent. It's as if they are fighting against each other... no, they should be arguing."
"That is indeed strange. Normally, one powerful vengeful spirit would be enough to be fatal, but two combined allowed Godfather Lorenzo to survive."
This is illogical.
Just like a person who gets both AIDS and cancer at the same time, it's true that the two viruses attack each other, but the person will definitely be the first to die.
"Boss, what are your plans?"
"It's very simple. I'll draw an exorcism circle in the basement and then have the old godfather hide inside for a while."
This is the most standard exorcism procedure, and most experts in the church will handle it in this way.
"Spirit" is a fragile existence that can only stay in the mortal world for seven days. Most vengeful spirits have intellectual deficiencies. As long as they lose their goals and have no obsessions, they will quickly dissipate.
This process won't take too long.
Detective Simon tucked the umbrella under his arm, opened the black box, and took out mercury, chicken blood, holy water from the church, and other items to suppress spirits, and began preparations.
"What if the other party doesn't disappear?"
"Then we have Plan B."
Twenty minutes later, Serena helped Godfather Lorenzo into the basement, while the rest of the people were kept outside.
In the array formed by the intricate interweaving of red and white liquids, Lorenzo sat in the center. Simon poured holy water on his godfather Lorenzo's head, then stepped back to observe his surroundings.
As the water flowed overhead, a soft panting sound filled the air.
Godfather Lorenzo instantly struggled, veins bulging on his cheeks as if something were choking him.
"Grandpa?" Serena's beautiful brows furrowed slightly as she tried to approach, but was stopped by Pharos.
Pharos saw two vengeful spirits hovering above Father Lorenzo's head slowly rise up, and then they left the range of the magic circle.
Lorenzo's complexion gradually improved, and he fainted.
"It worked?" Pharos asked, somewhat pleased.
Excuse me, you two vengeful spirits. Although I don't know why you've been haunting Godfather Moretti, rather than let you disappear in vain, why not lend me a hand?
He grumbled to himself, just about to touch Miss Crow to activate "Soul Devouring".
Just as the vengeful spirit was escaping the magic circle, the dim gas light in the basement flickered and then went out.
Detective Simon sighed and said:
"Sigh, it looks like something unexpected has happened."
