Greek Mythology: Starting with Becoming the God of the Breeze
Chapter 2 The Method of Becoming a God and the Invasion of Sea Monsters
However, after decades apart, Euros did not come away empty-handed.
From his father, Astraeus, the god of the stars, Euros learned a piece of news that could barely be of any use.
First, there are two main types of gods in the Chaos world.
One type is the Primal God, which is naturally conceived from the Chaos Origin and the laws of heaven and earth. Some of the first, second, and even third generation Titans also belong to this type of deity.
They are born to hold the power of the world, are favored by heaven and earth, and are exceptionally gifted.
Euros belongs to this category.
Although weaker than His Father, He still symbolizes a part of the world's origin and is loved and protected by the world itself.
The second category is divine descendants, also known as divine officials, bloodline deities, or ordinary deities.
Their birth was not blessed by the world itself, so they could only inherit a portion of their fathers' divine duties.
There are more of these kinds of gods, but most of them are not very powerful.
Most importantly, they are not as noble as the original gods, and can be stripped of their divine authority or even their lives.
These kinds of deities are generally subordinate gods or offspring of the major primordial gods.
For example, Astraeus's sons, Fanon (Saturn), Phaethon (Jupiter), Pylois (Mars), Heospholos (Venus), and Stilbon (Mercury), all inherited some of his divine duties and became gods.
As the chief god, Astraeus could arbitrarily strip them of their divine authority.
The god of the stars speculated that the reason why Kanas did not inherit the divinity of Euros was likely related to his mother, Gaia, the Earth Mother.
Gaia, which symbolizes the earth itself, is truly powerful.
The power of Euros's divine influence was so great that it couldn't affect Kanas when it was still in its gestation stage.
Therefore, He suggested that Euros take Kanas to the Earth Mother to see if there was a solution.
If he's lucky enough to catch a time when Mother Earth's maternal instincts are strong, Kanas might even gain some of the Earth's divinity, using the long years of a demigod to accumulate divine power, solidify his divine office, and become an ordinary god in the Earth pantheon.
Even a god of clay or marble would be far better than the demigods we have today.
The problem is that Mother Earth Gaia has been asleep for countless years.
Although demigods have a longer lifespan than mortals, to the gods, it's just a matter of taking a nap.
Kanas listened quietly, understanding dawning on him.
It seems that the Father God had given him a wisp of divinity without his knowledge, in an attempt to help him, but for some reason failed.
He knew perfectly well that the supremely noble Earth Mother Goddess would never break her slumber and bestow divine grace upon him, a mere insignificant demigod.
Gaia has conceived tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of offspring. She herself is just an ordinary one among the masses, nothing special.
This is also the real reason why Eurus was unwilling to take him to the temple.
Looking at his father, who was filled with remorse and melancholy, Kanas felt a surge of tenderness in his heart and spoke softly to comfort him, gradually easing Euros's self-blame and guilt.
He never wanted his destiny to burden the only Father God who loved him.
As Oros's emotions gradually calmed down, Kanas's resolve grew stronger.
It is better to ask for yourself than for others.
He took the initiative to speak, inquiring in detail about the various aspects of the outside world, the current living conditions of the Golden Humans, the habits of the Wilderness Beasts, and the traces of the Sea Monsters, exploring the various aspects of all living beings and the situation of heaven and earth one by one.
Feeling guilty, Euros spoke freely and without reservation, slowly recounting his experiences from decades of traveling the world.
The sun and moon revolve, and twilight deepens.
Helios's sun chariot crossed the horizon, daylight faded, and warmth dissipated. The sea breeze on the karst island suddenly turned cold, biting and piercing, sweeping across the entire desolate cliff.
As a legitimate intermediate-level primordial god, Oros's physical body and divinity had long transcended the mortal realm, so this bit of cold wind naturally couldn't harm him in the slightest. However, Kanas, being only a demigod, immediately trembled slightly and subconsciously shivered.
Seeing this, Oros frowned slightly, scolded softly, and raised his hand to protect the young child and take him back to the cave to avoid the cold.
"The continent of Chaos is vast, and the four wind gods each have their own duties. The divine realm is already short of manpower, and we four wind gods are constantly busy."
"I had specifically instructed Boreas not to let His northern winds disturb this island, but I suppose that fellow was too busy and completely forgot."
Oros explained helplessly, his tone tinged with frustration and annoyance. As the primordial god who controls the wind, it was hardly honorable for him to allow his child to be afflicted by the cold wind.
Kanas gently shook his head, indicating in a soft voice that he was alright.
He looked up at the howling sea wind, a faint glimmer in his eyes.
Perhaps this is the only bond and gift that God the Father left for him, under the harsh fate.
Sigrún has taught at the Iceland University of the Arts as a part-time lecturer since and was Dean of the Department of Fine Art from -. In – she held a research position at Reykjavík Art Museum focusing on the role of women in Icelandic art. She studied fine art at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts and at Pratt Institute, New York, and holds BA and MA degrees in art history and philosophy from the University of Iceland. Sigrún lives and works in Iceland.
A cold wind howled, and the cliff top was silent.
Two months have passed since Oros last returned.
As the primordial god symbolizing one-quarter of the "wind direction," Oros also has his own divine duties to fulfill.
Previously, in order to help Kanas find a way to become a god, He had not brought the East Wind to the world of Chaos for decades.
So, after spending a few days with Kanas, Euros left the cave and went to the temple to fulfill his duties.
This desolate and secluded karst island was a residence personally chosen and gifted to Kanas by Oros, a peaceful and undisturbed "pure land" belonging exclusively to Kanas.
After the Father God left, Kanas once again stood alone on the cliff top.
This time, however, he no longer waited day after day for his loved one to return. He simply sat quietly on the edge of the cliff, facing the wind, and quietly felt the sea breeze brushing against his body.
Kanas was gentle and peaceful, perfectly inheriting the character of Euros.
Even though he knew that his path to godhood was slim and almost impossible, he felt regret but never resentment. He was even more afraid that his destiny would become a knot and burden in his father's heart.
He prefers the feeling of the wind blowing from the top of the cliff.
The cool breeze on his face helped him calm his chaotic thoughts, making his mind clearer and his head sharper, allowing him to calmly examine his situation.
The sea today is completely different from usual.
The sea breeze remained biting, and the waves surged. In the distance, deep in the blue sea, a shadowy figure was cutting through the waves, stubbornly approaching the karst island.
Kanas possessed extraordinary eyesight; his demigod-level vision allowed him to see the figure clearly at a glance.
It was a sea monster, its body covered in rough fish scales, its tail fin slapping the surface of the sea, splashing water everywhere.
Its hair, like withered seaweed, floated haphazardly on the sea surface. Its body was hunched, fierce, and ugly as it struggled to swim towards the island.
Karst Island is isolated in the deep sea, where various sea monsters roam year-round, and Kanas could occasionally catch a glimpse of one.
However, this island was no ordinary deserted island; it was a treasure land carefully selected by Oros.
The sea surrounding the island is perpetually encircled by an extremely violent wind wall, whose sharp and deadly air currents are enough to kill any living being below the demigod level.
The entire karst island is like being in the eye of a storm, surrounded by towering wind walls, while the island itself is peaceful and secluded.
Its unique geographical location made this barren island the perfect place to live.
The island is barren, so nymphs and daimyo cannot be born there.
Unless a god descends in person, no external force can threaten the safety of Kanas.
"As expected, they have no intelligence and act only on instinct."
Kanas watched the stubbornly approaching sea monster silently, his heart undisturbed, and sighed softly.
He knew better than anyone the power of the outer wind wall. Even he, a demigod, could hardly withstand the killing power of the wind wall for long, let alone this sea monster with no intelligence and low strength.
Its attempt to cross the raging winds and reach the island is tantamount to courting death.
A bizarre thought even crossed Kanas's mind.
If this dull-witted sea monster can really withstand the raging storm and successfully reach the island, it will prove that the external crisis has exceeded expectations. At that time, I, a lowly demigod, will probably not be able to escape the calamity either.
"If that day ever comes, the only regret will be that I won't have time to properly say goodbye to God the Father."
Kanas murmured silently, his mind at peace, watching the ignorant and fearless sea monster on the surface of the ocean, awaiting the inevitable destruction that would be ripped apart by the raging winds.
