Devouring Stars: Master of Evolution

Chapter 39 The Military's Attention

"As expected, genetic evolution isn't that simple!"

Qin Mu shook his head and transferred his consciousness from the mother nest back into his body.

After witnessing the successful evolution of Tiger Aoquan, Qin Mu impulsively decided to try adjusting the Zerg genes himself. He didn't aspire to be as powerful as Tiger Aoquan; he would be satisfied if he could be even slightly stronger.

As it turned out, he was overthinking it. When he saw the vast, star-like genetic diversity of the Tiger-Dog, he was completely at a loss for where to begin.

These days, although Qin Mu has been studying some books on genetic engineering on his own, even if he has a strong learning ability, the time is too short. At most, he is only at the level of a first or second-year college student majoring in a related field.

This level of understanding is at most superficial; how can one expect to manipulate Zerg genes?

We don't even know where to start!

After a few reluctant attempts and forcibly modifying part of the genetic structure, unsurprisingly, the entire genetic structure of life collapsed.

"But it's better than the beginning, right? At least I've figured out some of the functions of gene structures and even tried to modify them."

Qin Mu consoled himself.

Just as Qin Mu was attempting to modify the Zerg's genes, an alarm sounded from a satellite monitor in a military camp far away in the Jiangnan base city.

A soldier frowned as he looked at the information on the satellite.

"Strange monster activity in County 0203?"

There are now countless monsters on Earth, and satellite resources are extremely scarce. The main focus is on the king-level monsters, as well as the lord-level monsters in major cities and wilderness areas.

In a small place like County 0203, the strongest monsters are only at the level of high-level beast generals, which is not even worth mentioning.

However, because it is relatively close to the Jiangnan Base of the Shibei Military Region, I still check it occasionally.

"Is it an internal battle among monsters, resulting in the emergence of a powerful high-level Beast General-class monster fighting for territory, or has a Lord-class monster appeared? We should send the people from the Northern Military Region to investigate, just in case anything unexpected happens."

The soldier operated the computer and sent the information to the Shibei Military Region of Jiangnan Base.

The Northern Military Region was the military camp where Qin Mu conducted his combat assessment.

When the information reached the Northern Military Region, the relevant personnel there immediately took notice and began collecting data and compiling intelligence.

"Retrieve information on military personnel near County 0203 and inquire whether they have discovered any unusual activity in County 0203."

The military personnel in charge of intelligence immediately began an investigation.

"There are no military martial arts teams on missions in County 0203. Wait! A military martial artist has been discovered in County 0203! It's Qin Mu, the mentalist who caused such a stir recently!"

County town No. 0203 is located in a relatively remote area. Qin Mu chose this place because it was remote and not many martial artists went there.

"Qin Mu?"

Upon hearing the news, Zheng Xing's heart skipped a beat; Qin Mu was actually in County 0203.

According to satellite transmissions, a large-scale monster uprising occurred in County 0203, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of monsters.

It is highly likely that high-level beast generals are fighting for territory, or even that a lord-level monster has been born. At this time, it is very dangerous in County 0203.

Thinking of this, Zheng Xing immediately dialed Qin Mu's communication watch.

"Hmm? What does Zheng Xing want with me?"

Qin Mu's wristwatch vibrated slightly.

Because he was near the mother nest, Qin Mu did not answer the phone. This communication watch could not only make voice calls, but also make video calls. He did not want to expose the existence of the mother nest.

Stepping quickly out of the underground parking garage, Qin Mu flipped over and leaped onto a nearby tall building. After several more jumps, he landed on the roof and finally made contact.

"Commander!"

Having joined the military, Qin Mu no longer addressed Zheng Xing by his name as before, but instead called him "Commander." Zheng Xing was the commanding officer of the Northern Military Region camp, holding the rank of Major General, so addressing him as "Commander" was perfectly acceptable.

"Qin Mu, are you in County 0203 right now?"

Seeing that the call was connected, Zheng Xing breathed a sigh of relief. In the wilderness, it was common to not be able to reach a martial artist by phone, because the other party was very likely fighting a monster.

"That's right!"

Qin Mu returned.

"We've received news that a ferocious beast riot has occurred in County 0203, with numerous beasts clashing. There's a high possibility that a high-level beast general-level monster, or even a lord-level monster, has been born. Have you noticed anything unusual on your end?"

Zheng Xing's expression was serious; this was no small matter for him, or even for the Northern Military Region.

The Northern Military Region is not far from County 0203. If a high-level beast general is born there, that would be fine. But if it is a lord-level monster, then we would need to request a war god-level expert to eliminate it.

If left unchecked, the entire county will fall under the control of a lord-level monster, which is not a good thing for humanity.

If things go wrong, it could even trigger a beast tide!

"A ferocious beast uprising?"

Qin Mu blinked, somewhat embarrassed.

He had a guess about the purpose of Zheng Xing's call. He knew that the military would notice sooner or later when the swarm launched a large-scale battle, but he didn't expect it to happen so quickly.

"Sir, if you are referring to the beast riot in County 0203, I might know the reason."

"If I'm not mistaken, it's probably because I've been training here recently and killing too many monsters by accident."

Upon hearing Qin Mu's words, Zheng Xing was shocked. What had this guy done? How many monsters had he killed? How could it have caused the monsters in the entire county to riot?

"How many monsters did you kill?"

Qin Mu smiled slightly and replied.

"I don't have an exact count, but there are probably several thousand beast-soldier level monsters, and more than thirty beast-general level monsters, right?"

Zheng Xing's expression changed, and he said in shock.

"More than thirty beast general-level monsters! My God, no wonder these monsters have all rioted."

How many beast general-level monsters are there in the entire county? Qin Mu actually hunted down more than thirty of them all by himself! It's no wonder this city is in chaos!

"Understood. Take it easy and don't provoke any powerful monsters. If you encounter danger, remember to call for help or run to the military area."

After understanding the general situation, Zheng Xing stopped dwelling on the specifics and instead showed concern for Qin Mu.

As a psychic, it is generally difficult to kill someone unless they intentionally seek death, because psychics can fly!

With just one flight, Qin Mu gained a certain degree of self-defense capability against most monsters.

After hanging up the phone, Qin Mu frowned. He hadn't expected the military to discover the clues so quickly. Although he had managed to get away with it for the time being, he was worried that the military would send someone to investigate.

"County No. 0203 is still too close to the military region, but this scale of battle has already attracted the attention of the military."

It seems expansion here needs to be slowed down; the Zerg swarm's development focus can be shifted to city 0237.

Stopping development is of course impossible, not even migrating as it did in the beginning.

Because there are already more than 3 Zerg units in County 0203, it won't be easy to migrate them.

Needless to say, evolving a mother nest into a level three mother nest requires 5 energy points, and also requires the gene evolution degree to reach 100%.

This would require hunting down a large number of monsters, and the swarm wouldn't stop developing just because the military has taken notice.

Of course, a temporary period of dormancy is still necessary. If the military has taken notice of this city, then we can simply move on to another one.

Qin Mu had considered this from the very beginning.

After the mother nest evolved into a level two mother nest, Qin Mu immediately opened up three branch bases, one in the wilderness jungle and the other two in cities, one being city 0237 and the other city 0209.

City 0209 is just a small city. It was chosen because it is remote enough that almost no martial artists go there, making it very safe.

Before the Great Nirvana period, City 0237 was a large city with a population of several million, adjacent to Taihu Lake, and a very important node in Qin Mu's plan.

Furthermore, cities 0237 and 023, which is Suzhou before its great transformation, are very close and have great development potential.

There, the battlefield is larger, making it more suitable for the Zerg swarm to grow.

You can also start there by researching aquatic Zerg units to prepare for entering the ocean.

Even if the military didn't notice, Qin Mu was about to head to City 0237; the plan was just a little ahead of schedule.
