Chapter 9 Basic Magic Theory
Chapter 9 Basic Magic Theory
After leaving Ollivanders wand shop, it was already noon.
Professor McGonagall paid for Jerry and Crookshank to have lunch at the Leaky Cauldron, and then they went back to the streets of Diagon Alley.
"Shrink to a smaller size immediately!"
Jerry watched as Professor McGonagall pulled out her wand and pointed it at the large suitcase and cart. A flash of blue magic light appeared, and the suitcase and cart, which were full of stuff, shrank to the size of a palm.
"Alright, we should go back now!"
Professor McGonagall picked up the large suitcase and the trolley and put them in her pockets, then stretched out her arms.
"Everything's fine!"
Jerry paused for a moment, then immediately understood and grabbed Professor McGonagall's outstretched arm.
"Follower revealed!"
With a wave of her wand, Professor McGonagall and Jerry vanished into the streets of Diagon Alley.
"Magic is truly a wondrous power!"
Looking at the familiar orphanage room, Jerry couldn't help but sigh.
"Don't be envious. Once you graduate from Hogwarts, you'll be able to cast these spells with ease. Of course, the prerequisite is that you study hard!"
Professor McGonagall took the large suitcase and trolley out of her pocket and, after lifting the shrinking spell, spoke to Jerry.
"I will!"
Jerry put down Crookshank and nodded seriously.
Of course he would study magic diligently, because the world he lived in was not a very safe one, and magic was the only power he could currently master to protect himself.
To survive, he had to dedicate 200% of his energy to learning magic, no matter what.
"This is your train ticket to Hogwarts, September 1st, King's Cross Station. It's all on the ticket. Your Headmaster will drive you there; I've already spoken to him beforehand. Just make sure you keep an eye out."
Compared to Hagrid, who tossed Harry a ticket and rushed off, Professor McGonagall was much more meticulous. She not only instructed the orphanage director to take Jerry, but also explained to him all the potential problems that might arise when taking the Hogwarts Express.
A moment later, Jerry smiled and assured Professor McGonagall:
"Professor, I've memorized it all. Don't worry, I'll be on the Hogwarts Express on time to get to school!"
Professor McGonagall then nodded.
"See you at the start of the school year! And Mr. Carmen, I think you'd be perfect for Gryffindor!"
After leaving her last words, Professor McGonagall waved her wand and used Apparition, disappearing from the spot.
"The Academy of Reckless Men?"
Seeing Professor McGonagall disappear, Jerry couldn't help but look troubled.
When he first learned that this was the Harry Potter world, his first choice was Gryffindor and Slytherin, his first choice was Ravenclaw, and his second choice was Hufflepuff.
After all, his initial goal was to study magic and improve himself in this world.
The Gryffindor group of brutes are all troublemakers, number one at causing trouble, while Slytherin has serious class conflicts, and as an orphan, he doesn't have an easy time either.
Neither college allowed him to study in peace.
In terms of learning environment, Ravenclaw is definitely the best, with its students being high achievers who discuss and learn from each other, which will surely lead to faster progress.
If he can't get into Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff is a good alternative. Hufflepuff wizards are generally honest and kind, and at least they won't interfere with his studies.
However, Professor McGonagall seems to admire him now and wants him to go to Gryffindor. Moreover, he can earn red stars in this world, so Gryffindor seems to be a viable option.
"Forget it, there's still a month until Sorting. I'd better learn a few spells first so I can deal with those carjackers before I think about anything else!"
After hesitating for a while, he decided to put that problem aside for now and focus on learning magic on his own.
Jerry excitedly opened the large suitcase, took out the bag containing textbooks, and began to take out the magic books one by one and place them on the bed:
The book contains eight books: Standard Spells, Beginner's Guide, History of Magic, Theory of Magic, Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, Thousands of Magical Herbs and Mushrooms, Magical Potions and Elixirs, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Black Magic: A Guide to Self-Defense.
With only a month until his return, some textbooks that won't be helpful in the battle can be discarded for now.
After some thought, Jerry put the four books, "A History of Magic," "A Thousand Magical Herbs and Mushrooms," "Potions and Elixirs," and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," back into his bag.
"The History of Magic" tells the history of the magical world; it can only be read to broaden one's knowledge. "A Thousand Magical Herbs and Mushrooms" is an introduction to various herbs.
"Potions and Elixirs" is indeed very useful; powerful potions can certainly play a supporting role in battle. However, he cannot learn how to concoct potions on his own in just one month, nor does he have the materials to concoct powerful potions.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is a book that explains various magical creatures. He might use it if he goes on adventures in the future, but not for now.
The remaining books were "Standard Spells, Beginner", "Magic Theory", "Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration" and "Black Magic: Self-Defense Guide". Jerry kept "Magic Theory" and put the other three together on the table to the side.
For a complete novice to magic, Jerry believes that he first needs to know what magic is and how it works before he can learn related spells.
And "The Theory of Magic," a book that explains the basic theories, is what he needs to study most carefully right now.
With a serious expression, Jerry picked up "Theory of Magic," sat down in his chair, took a deep breath, and slowly turned to the first page.
"To arbitrarily alter the deepest secrets—the source of life, the essence of the self—must be prepared to bear the most extreme and dangerous consequences."
—Wolverine's First Basic Rule of Magic
'
Four hours later, Jerry closed "The Theory of Magic," rubbed his temples, and couldn't help but sigh:
"Hermione Granger, as expected of a top student, is truly amazing!"
Jerry originally thought that he had also gone through the college entrance examination, and his learning ability was not bad in any aspect. Moreover, he had lived for more than forty years and his life experience was quite rich. He should be able to handle the most basic magic theory.
But the truth is a resounding slap in the face.
As a completely unfamiliar knowledge system, without the guidance of a teacher, Jerry spent four hours studying it on his own, feeling as if he were reading a book written in heaven.
It's like an ordinary person suddenly obtaining a secret manual that allows them to cultivate into an immortal. Without a master's guidance, it's just as difficult to slowly comprehend it word by word.
That's why he made that exclamation when he thought of Hermione, that eleven-year-old girl, who had taught herself most of the first-year magic before the start of the school year without any guidance.
Perhaps Hermione is the kind of child prodigy and genius in the magical world, while he is just a normal, ordinary person.
"I just hope the Little Red Star's energizing and refreshing function is effective, otherwise it'll be a real problem!"
