Chapter 4 Warrior?

"Cough cough."

A cough brought Chen Fan back to reality. The limping man stared at Chen Fan and said in a casual tone, "Kid, that bow you're holding is just the most basic one. Anything over thirty meters long isn't very effective against low-level ferocious beasts. Besides, you've only drawn it once."

He gestured towards the outside with his chin, "See those guys with spears?"

Chen Fan glanced outside and then nodded.

"When they first came here, they started by practicing archery. Some even used a second bow, weighing sixty pounds. But so what? They couldn't keep it up for more than two or three days."

As he spoke, he glanced at the bow in Chen Fan's hand and said, "Let me give you a heads-up, it would be best if you practiced your marksmanship like them, so that you would be able to fight back if you encountered ferocious beasts in the wild."

"Uncle Zhang, thank you for reminding me, but I still want to give it a try."

Looking at the progress bar next to Basic Archery on the panel, Chen Fan felt an urge to max it out.

"Whatever you say."

It's not surprising that the man with the limp was also there.

Youngsters are all like that; they won't learn until they hit a wall. But once they've practiced drawing the bow a few more times and can't even lift their right arm anymore, they'll know what hardship is.

"Uncle Zhang, may I try those bows?" Chen Fan asked with a smile. He had a question: would using a stronger bow lead to faster progress in basic archery skills?

"Okay."

Without hesitation, the lame man said, "The second bow weighs sixty jin, the third eighty jin, the fourth one hundred jin, the fifth two hundred jin, and the sixth three hundred jin. Which one do you want to try?"

"Three, three hundred jin?"

Chen Fan's gaze fell on the rightmost black longbow, which was about the same height as him. It weighed 300 jin (approximately 150 kg), meaning that to draw the bowstring, one's arm would need to have at least 300 jin of strength.

"This has already intimidated you?"

The lame man smirked, "Don't even mention a 300-pound bow, there are people who can draw it and kill an armored rhinoceros from a thousand meters away with a single arrow."

"Armored Rhinoceros..."

Chen Fan muttered to himself. In his memory, this was the top-tier existence among intermediate-level ferocious beasts. It seemed to be wearing armor, and he had heard that it could stop small-caliber bullets.

"Uncle Zhang, you're an Awakened One, right?" he asked instinctively.

After all, in this world, the awakened ones are a group of people standing at the top.

"no."

Unexpectedly, the lame man shook his head and said, "He is a martial artist."

"Warrior?"

Chen Fan's eyes widened in surprise.

"Only one in ten thousand can become an Awakened. Ordinary people, apart from relying on firearms, have a hard time fighting against ferocious beasts. The good news is that, with the changes in the world, the upper limit of humanity seems to have been broken as well."

The lame man muttered to himself, "These people temper their bodies and strengthen their bones, enabling them to possess strength beyond that of ordinary people. This is what martial artists are. A few kilometers away from our village, in Zhao Family Fortress, there is a man who can draw this 300-pound war bow. He is a martial artist."

Chen Fan took a deep breath, feeling a door slowly opening in front of him, and asked excitedly, "Are there any martial artists in our camp?"

"If there isn't anyone like the one in Zhao Family Fort, but there are still people who can draw a 100-jin bow, like the Wei brothers. Both of them can shoot arrows and are the main force of the village's hunting team, but they probably won't stay here for long."

The lame man sighed, his brows furrowed with sorrow.

"Then, how do martial artists compare to Awakened Ones?"

Chen Fan continued to ask.

"Not at all."

The lame man looked over and said, "Awakened individuals who have just awakened their abilities are easily killed by martial artists. But once they become familiar with using their abilities, killing martial artists becomes a piece of cake. Take that guy from Zhao Family Fort, for example. Could he stop a bullet? But awakened individuals can. Some powerful awakened individuals are not even afraid of weapons of mass destruction. With a wave of their hand, they can destroy a town. These are not even on the same level."

Chen Fan's mouth was slightly open.

Are the Awakened really this terrifying?

He had a vague feeling that his system was probably related to martial arts. According to Uncle Zhang in front of him, taking the path of martial arts was a second-best option for ordinary people, with a very low ceiling.

Is it really?

"Alright, why do you have so many questions?" The lame man glared at Chen Fan with displeasure and threw the sixty-pound bow on the wall at him.

"Give it a try."

Chen Fan snapped out of his daze, put down the forty-pound bow, and tried to draw the sixty-pound hard bow. He only managed to draw it halfway before his face turned red and his right arm trembled rapidly. When he had drawn it more than halfway, he simply didn't have the strength and had to give up.

This body is still a bit weak.

The lame man smiled knowingly. "Want to try the eighty-pound bow again?"

"No, no need."

Chen Fan shook his head with a wry smile, his gaze falling on the remaining few bows.

Just because he can't do it now doesn't mean he can't do it in the future. In a couple of days, once he's accumulated enough potential points, he'll be able to draw that 60-pound bow. The same principle applies to the rest.

Then, the lame man gave him a quiver of arrows and went outside.

Once they reached the open space by the door, he drew his bow, aimed at the target twenty meters away, explained the general posture, and then added: "When drawing the bow and shooting an arrow, remember the three levels: the wrist of the front hand should be level, the elbow of the back hand should be level, and the wrists and elbows of both hands should be level with the shoulders. This is the most basic movement."

After saying that, with a "whoosh," the arrow stuck into the earthen wall next to him.

The lame man looked at Chen Fan nonchalantly and said, "You can practice here today. If you don't understand anything, you can ask me anytime."

"Yes, Uncle Zhang."

Chen Fan glanced at the arrows on the wall and nodded.

"Um."

The lame man turned around, his old face flushed. He was indeed not good at archery; otherwise, he wouldn't be here guarding the warehouse.

Chen Fan took the bow and arrow, stood with his feet shoulder-width apart, held the bow in his left hand and nocked the arrow in his right. He was a little nervous, probably because it was his first time practicing archery so formally.

Take a deep breath.

He then slowly drew back the bowstring, squinting one eye to ensure it was aligned with the crosshair and the aiming point on the target.

Gradually, the bowstring was pulled to its maximum, making a creaking sound. A tremendous force came from his right shoulder. In the blink of an eye, the three fingers of his right hand that were holding the bowstring spread out quickly, and with a "whoosh," the arrow shot out at high speed.

As expected, it missed the target.

Chen Fan was already mentally prepared for this. He knew that only geniuses could hit the bullseye as soon as they started learning archery.

Besides, that's not actually what he cares about.

The next moment, his mind stirred, and the attribute panel appeared before his eyes. After seeing it clearly, a smile appeared on his face.

[Basic Archery, LV0 (3%)]

In other words, even though that arrow missed, it increased the progress bar by 2%.

If he does it 49 more times, he can raise his basic archery level to level one!
