Chapter 5 We Should Have a Car
When Zhang San returned, it was already past 3 PM. On the way, he bought a hamburger to fill his stomach and a bottle of soda. No one was home yet; Allen and Jessica wouldn't be back until 5 PM.
He watched TV, hummed a song, and drank his soda, feeling very relaxed. Around six o'clock, Allen and Jessica returned. Upon seeing Zhang San, Jessica said, "Stephen, you're in trouble. The manager fired you and will have you settle your bill tomorrow."
"Oh, that's a sad thing." Zhang San said something sad, but there was no sadness in his voice.
"You're fired."
"I know, but what can I do? I can't possibly ask anyone for help; that's it, I'll go collect my salary tomorrow."
Zhang San didn't care at all. He had already found a way to make money, so naturally he looked down on that meager salary. Under Jessica and Allen's surprised gazes, he returned to his room and began writing down his plan to make money.
He needs to accumulate his first pot of gold first; there's nothing else he can do. Now, in Los Angeles, he feels there are so many rich people here; he should think about what to do.
In North America, most people dispose of these old appliances by throwing them away, and they need someone to do it. If you opened a service company that specializes in taking care of these things for others, you should have no problem doing so. You could not only handle these things but also earn some money.
I also need a warehouse, a vehicle, and a company; but most importantly, I need money.
That night, Zhang San was once again met with a scream. He really wanted to curse. Couldn't that woman Jessica keep her voice down?
When Zhang San woke up in the morning, he asked them, "How do I get a driver's license?"
"That's easy. I'll take you there. I'll borrow a car tomorrow, but do you know how to drive?"
"certainly."
Zhang San's past life was quite successful; today, Zhang San went to the Blockbuster store again, and the store manager was quite nice. He settled the two hundred dollars and then let him leave.
Zhang San first went home and began planning his future; then he rested and fell asleep.
In the afternoon, Jessica brought back food. When the two returned, they saw Zhang San still lying on the sofa.
"Hey, wake up, Stephen, time to eat."
"I took half a day off. Tomorrow I'll take you to take your driving test. I'm telling you, if they ask you anything, this is how you should answer..."
Jessica mentioned a few things that made Zhang San feel that having someone familiar with the situation was a good thing. After she finished speaking, she added, "Tomorrow I said I'd introduce a beautiful woman to you. Come over tomorrow, and you can meet her. She'll also be moving in with us."
"What?! You're moving in here?"
"Yes, I told you, I'll introduce her to a boyfriend. She's unemployed now and needs a place to live; and you, you also need a girlfriend, well, you also need a place to live."
"Wang Defa, thank you for the generous gift!"
The next day, when he returned from his driving test, he saw Jessica bring in a woman who was young but perfectly matched his aesthetic.
After seeing the girlfriend Jessica introduced him to, Zhang San said, "Jessica, I'll accept you as my sister-in-law."
"I'm Stephen, nice to meet you."
"Why are you so happy? Do you want to... you know?"
Zhang San blinked and realized that the beautiful woman in front of him spoke... well, too directly; moreover, he took back his earlier thought that Jessica, his sister-in-law, could be thrown in the trash can—she was just too unlovable.
"Yes, didn't Jessica tell you?"
Perhaps Zhang San's gaze was too aggressive, making the girl opposite him a little uncomfortable. In the past, boys would have been embarrassed by her questions, but this Chinese man in front of her was really annoying and made her feel awkward. She didn't reply, but instead looked around the room.
"It's small, but it's still habitable."
"Hey, girl, that's my room, f***, Jessica, what's going on?"
Jessica shrugged and said, "It looks like this; you might have to sleep on the couch."
"That's not fair."
Zhang San stormed into his room, determined to reclaim it; otherwise, he would be unworthy of his name.
When he went in and came out again, three hours had passed, and his legs felt a little unsteady. He couldn't help but sigh, "These foreign women are really insatiable!"
What he didn't know was that the person on the other side also felt that the other side needed too much.
The two people sitting on the sofa watching TV saw Zhang San come out. Allen gave him a thumbs up, but Jessica's words almost made him trip over.
"Hey Stephen, I didn't expect you to be so strong. I'd love to have a go with you."
Zhang San ignored the two clowns and went to the kitchen to find something to eat. He had used up a lot of energy this time and felt completely drained.
He made four egg sandwiches, heated two cups of milk, and started eating. Then, carrying the milk and sandwiches, he went to his room.
"Alan, look at Stephen, he can actually cook for..."
"Don't pity him; these are things that women are supposed to do."
Allen continued watching the football game, and Jessica felt the same way, so they stopped paying attention to it.
The woman inside was lying on the bed, her back bare, like a dead dog.
"Hey woman, want something to eat?"
"No, I can't take it anymore..."
As if by instinct, it uttered some incoherent ramblings, leaving Zhang San both amused and somewhat proud, realizing that he had quite a lot to offer.
The next morning, Zhang San asked, "Woman, you still haven't told me your name?"
"Helen!"
Yesterday she still ate the sandwich Zhang San made, and finished it in just a few bites. She was probably too dehydrated, so she drank milk and a glass of water before she felt a little better.
At breakfast, Zhang San said in surprise, "You own a pickup truck? You actually drive a pickup truck?"
"What's wrong with a woman driving a pickup truck? Are you discriminating against women?"
"Oh, the pickup truck Jessica borrowed from you."
She didn't say anything, just drank her milk, which was obviously a tacit agreement; and Zhang San felt great, this was really... exactly what he needed.
"You don't have a job? You can come and help me, it's just a bit tiring."
"Helen is not afraid of hard work. She has wanted to have a farm since she was a child, but it is impossible for her to realize her dream."
"Why? Is it because you don't have money?" Seeing that everyone else nodded, Zhang San said, "No, there will be a chance. When I have money, I'll give you a farm." The other three thought Zhang San was joking, but Zhang San himself didn't think so.
"Thank you, Stephen, but you'll need to have the money first." Zhang San felt embarrassed, but he knew that as long as he wasn't embarrassed, it was others who would be.
"Helen, I'm serious. I'll pay you a salary, and you can be my driver and lend me your car."
Helen did not object, and Zhang San guessed that she must have agreed.
