Chapter 78, A Good Show
Chapter 78 A Good Show
"Have they hidden themselves, or have they already left the underground palace?"
Wes carefully explored every corner of the underground palace. The passageways were dark and silent, with only the soft sound of his footsteps echoing in the air.
However, after a thorough search, no trace of Imhotep was found.
This confirmed to Wes that Imhotep had left the dungeon.
Then Wes left the underground palace and headed to Cairo. He was driving a flying car, and the legend of the "Ten Plagues" came to mind.
He longed to witness the legendary "Ten Calamities" firsthand and experience the awe-inspiring power that transcended nature.
Wes skillfully maneuvered the flying car, passing over city after city, the scenery flashing by.
He successfully arrived at the hotel before O'Connor and the others.
Shortly afterward, O'Connor, Evelyn, and Jonathan returned to the hotel and found Wes already sitting leisurely in the hotel lobby waiting for them.
"Aren't you still in the underground palace?" O'Connor asked in surprise. O'Connor's hair was a little messy, and there were fine beads of sweat on his forehead. He was obviously quite tired from the journey.
But the next second, he stopped caring about that issue, because his mind was now preoccupied with leaving Egypt. "We must leave here as soon as possible; this place is too dangerous."
Evelyn, however, had different plans; she wanted to stay.
"Are you crazy?" Not only O'Connor, but Jonathan was also completely baffled as to what his sister was thinking.
"Didn't you see that mummy? Guns are useless against him!" Jonathan said anxiously, looking at Evelyn worriedly, afraid she would make some unwise decision.
Evelyn firmly believes that releasing Imhotep was her mistake, and she wants to stop it from happening and make amends for it.
The two argued incessantly, their voices growing louder and their emotions becoming increasingly agitated.
O'Connor tried to persuade Evelyn that the priority was protecting herself and others, not risking staying in dangerous places. However, Evelyn's stubbornness left O'Connor feeling helpless.
In the end, they parted on bad terms, and Evelyn returned to her room, feeling as heavy-hearted as if a huge boulder was pressing down on her.
O'Connor and Jonathan went to the hotel bar, intending to have a drink and relax.
They sat in the corner, silently watching the liquid in their glasses. O'Connor's brow was furrowed, while Jonathan looked bewildered. Both remained silent, lost in their own thoughts.
As for Wes, he was once again completely ignored by them.
Weiss was completely unconcerned about their attitude. He sat quietly to the side, not joining their argument, but silently observing the emotional changes of each person.
The adventurers who had been to Hamunaptra were gathered in the bar, celebrating their miraculous escape from that ghostly place.
They chatted and laughed loudly, their glasses clinking together, filling the bar with laughter as everyone shared their adventures and proved to each other how lucky they were to have escaped unscathed.
Someone excitedly poured the wine in their glass into their mouth, but the next moment, they immediately spat it out.
"Pfft~~" In an instant, the sound of spraying alcohol filled the bar, and everyone put down their glasses.
"What's this smell?" He frowned deeply, his eyes fixed on the wine glass in his hand, the wine emitting a strange aroma.
"How can it taste like blood??" another person said in horror, his face turning pale as he put down his wine glass, his body trembling.
O'Connor keenly noticed that the water in the hotel fountain had turned into blood, and the red liquid shimmered eerily under the lights.
Outside the hotel, various mournful wails began to emanate. The people of Cairo were horrified to discover that the river had turned blood red, the fish that had once swum freely in the river were dying one after another, and the river water emitted a nauseating stench, making it completely unusable.
"The Ten Calamities!! The Ten Calamities have arrived!!"
Huge hailstones suddenly fell from the sky, accompanied by the roar of thunder and the howling of the wind, like the hammer of judgment on the eve of the end of the world.
The hailstones, like cannonballs, relentlessly destroyed crops, houses, and livestock. Pedestrians on the streets frantically sought shelter, but the hailstones were too powerful; those who couldn't escape in time could only huddle in corners or under eaves, praying for the disaster to end soon.
Now, even those who had held onto a sliver of hope had no choice but to believe that the legendary "Ten Calamities" had truly befallen them.
However, Weiss keenly noticed something unusual.
The scale of these "ten plagues" was limited to Cairo, but according to ancient records, they should have affected the whole of Egypt.
Not a single mistake, not a single poem, not a single post, not a single piece of content, not a single look!
So far, the only disasters reported have been locust plagues, hailstorms, and blood floods.
Everything seemed to be under control, and it was nothing like the legendary "Ten Calamities".
The streets and alleys of Cairo were filled with kneeling people. They were praying devoutly to the Egyptian gods. Some elderly people knelt on the ground with their hands clasped together and muttering incantations, while children clung tightly to their parents, their cries rising and falling.
Their chanting grew louder and louder, gradually becoming a continuous sound, impacting people's hearts wave after wave. Some things invisible to the naked eye floated slowly into the air with their prayers and then disappeared, as if drawn by a mysterious force.
"Is this faith?" Wes stood outside the crowd, observing everything. What exactly did these unseen forces mean?
Wes increasingly felt that Imhotep's resurrection was not accidental, but meticulously orchestrated. He recalled his previous experience at Hamunaptra, and it seemed that there was a deeper reason hidden behind it all.
During this period, Egypt was colonized by Britain, and its economy, culture, and religion suffered tremendous impacts.
Britain's powerful ships and cannons shattered the nation's former confidence, and their prayers went unanswered in the face of Britain's mighty army.
Life is becoming increasingly difficult for the Egyptian people, who are beginning to doubt everything they once believed in, and are starting to believe that the guns in their hands are the only force that can protect them.
Against this backdrop, is the release of Imhotep, which caused natural disasters and reaped the faith, truly the purpose of the Egyptian gods?
Through these natural disasters, the gods seem to be trying to awaken people's awe of ancient beliefs.
As for those who died among them, the gods seemed to care nothing for them.
"What a show! Imhotep, O'Connor, and Evelyn are all just pawns," Wes thought to himself.
