Mystery: Starting from the Shadow World
Chapter 9 The Night Watch
Chapter 9 The Night Watch
Philip sighed helplessly, then inhaled the calming aromatherapy in the carriage, trying to relax. "What's going to happen to me next?"
He didn't think he would be executed or tried, nor did he think he would be imprisoned in the dark. After all, although he was a member of the Rose School, he was only "half an extraordinary one," and strictly speaking, he was still in the category of ordinary people.
"Yes, that's a very direct question."
Dunn looked into Philip's eyes, his tone gradually becoming serious: "Your situation is quite special, but given that you are not yet an extraordinary being, you currently have two options."
"First, live under an assumed name and move to Tingen or other cities with the help of the church. Give up the idea of becoming an extraordinary person. We will take special care of you to prevent you from getting involved in similar supernatural events again."
"Wait a minute." Philip was puzzled. "A supernatural event? Me?"
"That's right." Leonard turned around at some point, leaned back in his chair leisurely, and explained, "To be precise, it's a case of extraordinary beings. The black-robed man you just encountered is a Sequence 8 Extraordinary being called 'Fallen Angel,' from the Blood Cult."
"He's acting very strangely. Oh, to put it another way, we've been hunting him down for a long time, and we only found an opportunity today when he came here. By the way, this guy's goal is to hunt others, with extraordinary individuals being the priority."
Hunting extraordinary beings... If I actually went there, I'd probably be hunted too. Even if I gave up, I'd definitely be followed and hunted down for a chance to kill. Philip felt a chill run down his spine and nodded.
"Okay, what's the other option?"
"The second option is to join the night watch." Dunn Smith took out his pipe, but didn't light it. He simply held it to his nose and sniffed it gently, his tone softening slightly.
"You are not a truly ordinary person; you possess extraordinary abilities and are involved in a case involving the supernatural. Inviting you would not violate any confidentiality clauses. Furthermore, since you desire to become a supernatural being through the 'Prisoner' pathway and have the means, we cannot allow this possibility to pass you by."
Indeed, the prisoner Philip sighed silently to himself, "I understand."
It seems that joining is the only option for now.
At least their lives can be guaranteed.
He thought this to himself, but felt no worry or dissatisfaction. He simply pursed his lips and asked somewhat shyly, "How much freedom will I have after becoming a night watchman? And what about the salary?"
Dunn paused for two seconds, then a slight smile appeared on his lips as he slowly began to speak:
"If you are a clerical worker, the weekly wage is 2 pounds 10 soles, plus a confidentiality and risk allowance, totaling 3 pounds. Once you concoct and consume the potion to become an extraordinary being, it will rise to 6 pounds. But until then, I hope you will think it over carefully."
"As for freedom, well, you'll have your own life in Tingen on weekdays, and we won't interfere too much. However, this job doesn't offer Sundays off, only rotating days off. Well, at least for now."
Philip rubbed his short blond hair, then stretched. "So, you're saying that after I become an Extraordinary, I'll face some special treatment?"
"That's true. After all, they are prisoners. Freedom is an inevitable sacrifice. I'll join them."
Pop, pop, pop!
A dull, subtle clapping sound rang out, and Leonard Mitchell, with an unnatural smile on his face, said, "Wow, looks like we'll have a new teammate soon. Welcome to the team."
"Colleague, he's not an extraordinary one yet," Dunn corrected, then continued, his expression unchanged.
"Regarding the 'Prisoner' route, we don't have the corresponding potion recipe, but based on your performance, it doesn't seem to be a problem. You can ask me for the materials list later and apply for it yourself using your merits."
Surprisingly, it's quite humane.
Philip nodded, then seemed to have thought of something, "Um, if I provide a Sequence 9 potion recipe through normal means, can I get credit for it? I promise, it won't be anything like 'prisoner'."
Dunn gave him a deep look, his already weathered eyes now even more unfathomable. "Of course, no problem, but it will take time to prove its effectiveness."
"Before that, prepare for your new job."
As the last rays of the setting sun shone down, a four-wheeled police carriage pulled up at 36 Zorant Street. Three men slowly stepped out and ascended the steps to the second floor, where they came to a vertical sign that read:
Blackthorn Security Company.
Is this some kind of disguise for the night watchmen? Well, speaking of which, in such a remote place, wouldn't a security company that should be operating openly be discovered by someone with ulterior motives? Philip thought to himself, but still silently followed Dunn as he opened the door.
Beside the light wood coffee table in the center of the room, a brown-haired girl was reclining on a soft-backed chair, her hands hanging limply at her sides, holding a newspaper to cover her face.
Seeing this, Dunn rubbed his temples, while Leonard smiled carefree, but still remembered to remind him, "Rosanne, take charge of greeting the new colleagues."
"Wow!"
A gasp rang out, and the girl named Rosanne sat up abruptly, looking at the three people who had entered. She clutched her chest and breathed a sigh of relief: "Phew, Captain, let me explain."
"Go get an employment contract." Dunn seemed used to this; he simply made a request, then said to Philip:
"You can sit here and wait a while. Leonard and I need to change our clothes."
Not a single mistake, not a single poem, not a single post, not a single piece of content, not a single look!
Change your clothes. Are they dirty now?
Philip's gaze swept over Dunn's black trench coat and Leonard's white shirt that wasn't tucked into his trousers. Although he felt a little strange, he nodded and obediently sat down on the classic sofa used to receive guests.
Then, just like Rosanne had done in a hurry, the two pushed open the door to the side room and entered the inner room, where they remained still.
Philip sat alone, looking around before staring at the empty coffee table, a look of disbelief on his face. "Seriously... you don't even pour a glass of water?"
This level of hospitality leaves much to be desired in terms of improvement.
A few minutes passed in the blink of an eye, and Luo Shan rushed out of the door again, placing two copies of the contract, along with a dark red pen and ink, on the coffee table. "This, this is your employment contract, phew."
"Okay, thank you."
Philip suppressed his inner grumbling, took the two contracts in his hands, and began to examine them briefly.
Shortly after, Dunn and Leonard, who had finished changing, came out from behind the door. They were wearing black and white checkered uniforms and soft caps with police badges, and their shoulder insignia had two or three silver six-pointed stars that symbolized their status as police inspectors.
Yes, Dunn is the one with three stars.
