Chapter 142 I'm just too much of a saint.
WND has a news studio in Los Angeles, mainly used for its "Star of the Day" program.
Today's host is still Kadoc, an old man who, despite his age, is witty and humorous.
At 8 p.m., Kadoc sat in the studio lobby, smiling at the camera, and said, "For today's Star of the Day, we've invited a rising star unlike any other in America. He's not in the entertainment industry, but his name is known to every American. His heroic deeds are something we all admire and aspire to; he's a new generation idol in America!"
"He is Ian Carl, the one who saved United Airlines Flight 77!!"
Amidst loud cheers and applause from countless people, Ian stepped out from the side.
He smiled at the camera, bowed, and then gracefully sat down on the red sofa next to him.
Kadoc, sitting behind his desk, smiled at Ian and said, "Mr. Carl, this is your first time on Today's Star, isn't it?"
Ian smiled and nodded: "Yes."
"How does it feel?"
"It feels like coming home."
Kadoc laughed and turned to the audience: "There's something you might not know: this show was started by Ian Carl, and he's still our boss. So this is basically an interview with our own boss. To be honest, I hate this because it means I can't ask those pointed questions."
Ian immediately said, "Don't worry, Kadoc. No matter what questions you ask, I won't fire you. I don't have that authority. In my opinion, a good business owner must be able to tolerate many things, including those they don't like. Only with magnanimity can one embrace everything and achieve greater success. I'm not a manager at CBS or WND. Only Jason can decide your fate, and even James Paley won't interfere."
As he spoke, he spread his hands and laughed, "The United States is the most tolerant country in the world! We can accept all criticism and are willing to give anyone a chance."
Kadoc immediately asked, "Including the robbers from Palos Bank?"
"Of course," Ian replied confidently.
In the studio, Ian sat confidently, speaking eloquently.
We all make mistakes.
"Bill Gates went to jail for speeding and running red lights, Mark Wahlberg went to jail for attempted murder, Tim Allen was arrested for cocaine possession, Kiefer Sutherland was repeatedly caught driving under the influence, Woody Harrelson resisted arrest, Matthew McConaughey was arrested for drug possession and noise pollution, and even Washington once cut down a cherry tree..."
"But none of this prevents them from becoming great people."
"The meaning of life lies in the fact that we are always changing and growing."
"We are willing to be tolerant of others, give them a chance, and allow them to reform themselves."
"Sometimes, many people just lack an opportunity, and it's always better to reform a person than to kill them."
"Yes, I hired a lawyer to defend those three bank robbers, but that's because I felt they were just three young, immature kids. Their upbringing had left them uneducated and led them astray, and I had an obligation to help them."
"In fact, they had already repented. Think about it, if they didn't regret it, why did they turn themselves in?"
Someone shouted from below, "Isn't it because you're willing to give them money?"
Ian smiled and said, "No, of course not. I swear to God, I didn't give them a single penny more than the money I promised. They earned all their money themselves. They turned themselves in because they repented. I'm thrilled that I was able to persuade three wayward children to turn back from their ways. In my eyes, this is the best proof of my devotion to God and one of my greatest honors, second only to saving 273 people on United Airlines."
One customer raised their hand: "But the New York Times says this is sheltering criminals."
Ian laughed: "Protecting criminals? What do you mean by protecting them? Protecting someone means keeping evidence of their crimes secret. I haven't done that. Hiring a lawyer is a legal act, isn't it? Why should I be criticized for doing something legal?"
"Because those three guys were dangerous; they were carrying guns and fighting with the police in the street!"
"So what should we do? Put all these kinds of criminals to death? Do you know how many people commit murder in the United States every year? How many people are executed? Our laws have always taught us to be lenient, and God has mercy on the world and is willing to give them a chance to be reborn from the ashes."
"So who will give us the chance? Robbing a bank goes unpunished, so what about us? Are we going to rob one too?"
Ian replied seriously, "How can you put yourself alongside those lost sheep? Is money really that important to you? Can't you find fulfillment in spiritual growth? There are many things to pursue in life; you can't just chase after money."
I said it perfectly!
I never knew I was such a righteous person!
Kadoc, standing nearby, immediately said, "So you're not pursuing that?"
Ian, brimming with righteous indignation, replied, "Of course not. I don't deny that money is an important part of our lives, but it's definitely not the only thing."
There's also the power and fame, and the pleasure of controlling the fate of others!
I'm not satisfied with just an increase in the amount of money in my bank account.
I will manipulate your perceptions, control your behavior, and turn you all into my dogs!
This is what a future world hegemon should strive for!
Kadoc then said, "But isn't doing this a bit... well, to use an Eastern phrase, isn't it a bit too saintly?"
Ian said seriously, "I don't care what they say. There's nothing wrong with being a saint. That's just who I am. I'm willing to give everything to help everyone I can, and that makes my life more meaningful!"
He grinned and said, "I'm just too much of a saint. I always want to guide every lost sheep back to the right path! It may seem a bit old-fashioned, but that's who I am! Even if others despise my old-fashioned ways and criticize my pity, I will still have no regrets. I am willing to give everything just to make this world a better place."
As Ian spoke, thunderous applause erupted from below.
Kadoc felt an urge to vomit.
If the world were all beautiful, Mr. Carl, you'd go crazy.
I know exactly who you are!
Then Kadoc smiled broadly, clapped, and laughed: "I admire your great and noble character! By the way, Mr. Carl, what is your opinion on the New York Times' accusation that you discriminate against Jews?"
Ian replied firmly, "That's slander. I have never discriminated against any Jew, and I have never said anything bad about Jews. Do you know who my favorite celebrity is? Natalie Portman, and she's Jewish!"
Someone below shouted, "But you didn't pursue her!"
The latest novel is first published here!
Ian exclaimed, "Because I haven't had the chance. I haven't even seen her once. If God gave me the chance, I would definitely pursue her."
He stood up and said, "Miss Natalie Portman, would you be willing to give me a chance?"
Everyone burst into laughter again.
Great, tomorrow's headline will be Ian Carr publicly proposing to Natalie Portman.
Wherever Ian Carl is, news is everywhere!
Someone else called out, "What about Scarlett Janssen and Jessica Alba? And Shawna too?"
Ian smiled: "I believe they will get along well."
The audience burst into laughter.
Unlike Kate, Scarlett never made headlines about breaking up with Ian, so many people realized what was going on.
I'm so damn envious!
I really want to be Ian Carl.
Kadoc stated, "But to our knowledge, your company has never employed a single Jew. There are rumors that you ordered your personnel manager not to hire any Jews!"
Ian replied seriously, "That's a lie. I absolutely did not give such an order. As everyone knows, the management of the company is not done by me now, it's done by Derek Chandler, Israel, Ron Lloyd... I don't do these things, and it's impossible for me to give such an order."
Someone below said, "But there isn't a single Jew in your company."
Ian shrugged: "There are many companies without Jewish members. Do we need to make a list? This is just a coincidence. Just because there aren't any now doesn't mean there won't be in the future. But do you know what the most troublesome thing is?"
He looked at everyone and laughed, "Jews are so smart, they're very capable, in fact, I've always admired them! You know, there are so many Jewish executives in America! But at Carl Media Group, our executives don't have very high salaries. So it's not that I don't use Jewish people, it's that Jewish people look down on my company... My executives are among the lowest-paid in most media companies, I admit that. After all, we're a new company, when they joined Carl Media there were only a few dozen people, and the contracts were for three years... I couldn't bear to give them a raise early."
Another burst of laughter erupted below.
Ian's statement is tantamount to glorifying the Jews.
You are all amazing people. Ordinary jobs are not your job; being a senior executive is. But unfortunately, the salaries of senior executives here are low, so it's you who look down on me, not me who looks down on you.
Ian continued, "Besides, while my company may not have any Jewish employees, I do have Jewish business partners. CBS's chairman, James Paley, is Jewish, and we're good friends. I'm also a shareholder in CBS, and there are many Jewish people at CBS! Fuck, your statements will make James Paley resent me. James, are you watching TV? I swear I've never discriminated against you! But don't expect me to offer my ass as proof!"
Laughter erupted from the crowd once again!
Kadoc continued, "But you've been reporting a lot of news that's bad for DreamWorks lately."
Ian Carl was utterly shocked: "As journalists, we publish news when we have it, not when we don't choose it. Oh my god, you mean Spielberg, Katzenberg, and David Geffen are framing me? No, no, Kadoc, you can't frame three such prominent figures in the film industry like this! I don't believe they would do such a thing. Just for a few articles?? No, I absolutely refuse to believe it!"
Kadoc's face twitched: "I was just asking, I didn't say anything bad about Jews."
His fearful expression gave everyone the impression that Jews were so dangerous to mess with that even the fearless Ian Karl was afraid of them?
