Chapter 78 The Fox Cries to Catch the Fox

The next day, the sun rose.

Small groups of villagers were already worshipping, and the smoke from incense wafted into the temple hall on the morning breeze.

The mischievous creature crouched behind the statue, its eyes squinting as it greedily inhaled the incense smoke. It smacked its lips, a satisfied look on its face: "The incense is good today."

As it was thinking this, a waft of incense, ten times stronger than before, wafted straight in. Mi Chang's expression hardened, and he looked out following the scent.

A young man stood before the hall, holding a large bundle of incense sticks made of some unknown flower; the smoke was almost solidified. Mi Chang glanced around, and before the other two wandering deities could wake, he quickly took a deep drag.

The flavor was rich, and it made me feel completely comfortable after swallowing it. I savored the experience, feeling a ticklish sensation, and quickly crawled into the statue.

The statue opened its eyes a crack, and the young man before it immediately noticed, bursting into tears: "Great Immortal, Great Immortal, this humble one has finally found the true god!"

Mi Chang, maintaining his haughty demeanor, asked, "What do you need from me?"

"I come from Qinglin Township. Great Immortal, you may not know, but our village is plagued by foxes. Those foxes aren't even afraid of dogs; they eat chickens on sight. Now, almost all the chickens in the village have been eaten."

"Is that all?"

"Master, those are chickens from an entire village! A fox can eat three in one meal, so it would take a month to finish them!" the young man said earnestly.

The bewildered creature carefully discerned his thoughts, finding them sincere and tinged with regret, seemingly genuine. Still uneasy, it brazenly extended wisps of malevolent energy.

The young man stared straight ahead, showing no sign of flinching, letting the malevolent energy seep into his very being.

"Is it really that simple?" Mi Chang frowned, but the young man pushed the incense stick forward again, the aroma of the incense wafting into its nose.

Mi Chang took a drag, then another.

"If we delay any longer, those two old ghosts will wake up. This incense is burning brightly and sincerely, and it can open up a path for Qinglin Township. It's a golden opportunity; if I don't seize it, wouldn't I be a fool?"

It's done!

"Alright." It adopted a benevolent expression. "Since you have come so sincerely to ask, this great immortal will help you with this favor. Now go back."

The young man nodded repeatedly and walked out happily. The madman waited for a while, and seeing that he still seemed clueless, he finally got up and followed, attaching himself to the young man.

The two, one human and one ghost, descended the mountain, left the territory of Peach Village, passed through a grove of trees, and found themselves on a path leading to Green Forest Village.

Both sides of the road were barren land, overgrown with withered grass, and there wasn't a soul in sight.

The sun was shining brightly, but the young man didn't seek shelter under the trees. Instead, he walked in the sun, and Mi Chang followed him, suddenly realizing something was wrong.

Who would walk all the way from the southernmost point to the northernmost point, bypassing the temples of the Peach God and the Water God, just to come to this small, dilapidated temple to pray to the gods?

It was suddenly startled, realizing that it had been completely unaware. It was a bewitching creature, and its greatest skill was bewitching people's minds. But just now, someone had clearly bewitched it!

It dared not think further and hastily tried to activate the malevolent energy hidden within the fox's body. But the malevolent energy seemed to vanish without a trace, producing no reaction whatsoever.

The fox stopped and laughed, "You're greedy and always hoping for the best, so naturally you caught fire easily."

Two long tails emerged from behind the fox, absorbing the essence of the sun and dyeing its fur a golden-red hue.

"So it's a fox spirit!" Mi Chang sneered. Its fierce aura was useless, and as a wandering spirit, it couldn't be exposed to sunlight, but it had other methods.

The fox's vision blurred.

The surrounding scenery suddenly changed, and its body seemed to shrink continuously, becoming smaller than when it was born, now residing in a forest. Several hunters as tall as giants emerged from behind the trees, with hunting dogs as strong as tigers and leopards crouching at its feet. They were all dressed in fox furs and were staring at it menacingly.

Seeing the fox standing there in a daze, Mi Chang felt a sense of relief: 'Even a fox that has become a spirit is restrained by its nature!'

He intensified his illusionary spell, and the hunters strode forward, their knives and axes stained with blood. The hunting dogs bared their teeth and whimpered, closing in on the fox step by step.

The fox neither hid nor ran. It simply raised its head, its eyes showing no fear, only a strange expression.

The fragrance spread, and the fox used all its magic to fight against the bewitching creature.

The illusion seemed to shatter with a tangible sound; the illusion crumbled, and it stared in disbelief: "How is this possible!"

"The fox grew up in the mountains and only saw humans for the first time after hearing the sound. Why should it be afraid of hunters?" the fox said matter-of-factly. "If those two men with hammers and machetes had come and fought with the fox, the fox might have even used its claws. But you only know how to manipulate people's hearts, and all your supernatural powers are countered by the fox. What is there to complain about in this situation?"

Hidden energy surged from the fox's mouth. Mi Chang struggled desperately, using all her strength, but could only watch helplessly as she was tightly bound.

"Wait, I have something to say. I'll tell you whatever you want to ask!" Before the fox could reply, Mi Chang continued, "It's all because of the boss... Jie Chang forced us..."

The fox covered its mouth, watched coldly, picked up the thing, crumpled it into a ball, and stuffed it into its tail. Then it exhaled a breath of foul air, expelling the ferocity that had been sealed inside its lungs.

It was still early, so the fox found a shady spot, sat cross-legged, and carefully observed the bewildering creature in its tail.

After a short while, the fox stood up, shrank back into a small fox, and then cast its illusion spell again.

A few breaths later, the fox disappeared, replaced by a thin, hunchbacked man.

The fox looked around with satisfaction, then slightly relaxed its restraints on the bewitching creature, and now even the scent matched.

The first choice is to target the Bewitching Fox, both because it is the most greedy and easily lured, and because it only knows how to use illusions and is not good at fighting. It is countered by the Fox, and by disguising itself as the Bewitching Fox, it will not be easy to be discovered.

Of course, there is also a trivial reason.

The most talkative one.

……

Inside the mountain god temple, Jie Chang frowned, staring intently at the temple gate. Only when the moon rose above the trees did he see that familiar figure running back into the temple.

"Rampant!"

"Boss!" the fox cried, his voice much louder than Jie Chang's, his face filled with panic. "Boss, something terrible has happened! I was scouting in Tao County when I saw the underworld officials!"

The robber panicked and, disregarding everything else, hurriedly asked, "How many?"

"At least two! They're investigating the cult and catching that fox; they can't look after us right now, but we can't stay here. Run!"

Jie Chang breathed a sigh of relief: "What the hell are you afraid of, just the two of you? Who knows when they'll find out about us?"

The fox continued, "Hey boss, let's hurry up and, while the underworld officials are too busy, call all the brothers over, pull off a big heist, and then move on to another place!"

"Alright, stop resting and let's go now!" Jie Chang waved his hand, and seeing that the fox was still not moving, he said impatiently, "You still want credit at a time like this?"

"No, boss, you still haven't told us where the brothers are."

"How could you be so stupid?" Jie Chang recounted in detail the hiding places of every wandering spirit he could remember, then asked, "Did you remember them?"

"I've got it." The fox's eyes lit up.
