American homeless people, surviving in the city
Chapter 81 The Missing Sylvia
Finding a pistol in the original owner's woven bag was an unexpected delight.
Although it's still unclear why the original owner possessed such a well-preserved handgun, its appearance was a godsend for Lin Qi, who needed to be constantly on guard against cults.
He felt safer with a gun than with hunting knife skills.
But there was a fatal problem: Lynch didn't know how to use a gun at all.
Although he had played many shooting games, when he actually held a gun in his hands, Lin Qi didn't know where the safety was, how to aim, or how to load the magazine.
As for minor details like how to hold a gun, those were not among the first things Lynch needed to consider.
At least let's talk about firing the gun first.
...Maybe I can go to the Razor Gang and learn how to use a gun?
As Lin Qi pondered, he carefully checked the inside of the woven bag one last time, making sure there was nothing else of interest left before starting to pack the contents of the bag again.
First, wrap the gun and bullets in a piece of cloth torn from a tattered cotton coat and put it in the deepest part of the backpack. Then, put the suit in the car and stuff all the other tattered clothes back into the woven bag.
Lin Qi put the passport in his suit pocket, because it would be difficult to explain if someone saw it while he was out.
Lynch planned to carry the old Nokia phone with him, as he had confirmed during the phone's inspection that it contained a SIM card. In case the original owner's friends or relatives called the number, he could answer immediately.
After counting and sorting all the harvest in the woven bags, one question still involuntarily popped into Lynch's mind:
Who exactly was the original owner of this body?
A blank cell phone, a suit, a passport with its pages cut off, and a handgun were mixed together in a pile of dirty, tattered clothes.
Lin Qi rubbed his temples, feeling a jumble of thoughts in his head.
Instead of finding the original owner's identity information in the woven bag, it brought even more mysteries.
Fortunately, the original owner's identity is temporarily unrelated to all the problems Lin Qi is facing. Although Lin Qi can't figure it out, it won't affect his future life.
Scratching his head, Lynch shrugged, moved on from the woven bag incident, and continued on his way to the relief food truck.
Along the way, he put the mystery of his original identity out of his mind and thought about Sylvia.
Lynch hadn't seen Sylvia for a long time since they parted ways a few days ago when he was in charge of cleaning the crime scene for the first time.
At the time, Sylvia said that after discovering she was being followed, she did not choose to call the police. In retrospect, that decision was indeed very correct.
After all, the police could hastily close even a home invasion murder case in the Lakeside area, so a simple stalking case would probably not attract their attention.
However, Sylvia said at the time that she would hand the case over to her father, and I don't know how it is going now.
While pondering this, Lin Qi quickly arrived at the location where the relief food truck was parked.
However, all that appeared before him was an empty space.
Today, the food truck didn't even set up its stall!
...That shouldn't be the case. Shouldn't this food truck start operating from early morning?
Why didn't you come today?
Lin Qi quickly walked closer and examined it carefully.
Next to the open space where the relief food truck should have been parked, there were a few folding chairs, and some food scraps and paper bags were scattered on the ground. Only the open space was clean, clearly showing the abnormality of the situation today.
Several homeless men lingered nearby, looking puzzled and talking in hushed tones. Lynch walked over to them and soon overheard them speculating about why the food truck hadn't set up its stall that day.
They were just as baffled as Lynch.
Lynch took a deep breath.
Although everything on the street seemed normal except for the food trucks not being set up, the bakeries were open as usual, the air was filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and roasted coffee, and pedestrians were passing by as usual.
But seeing this scene, Lin Qi's heart couldn't help but feel heavy.
It was these subtle anomalies hidden in the everyday that made him uneasy.
Lynch took out his phone, intending to call Sylvia, but he immediately realized that the two had never exchanged contact information before.
Apart from the umbrella he now keeps in his car, he has no contact with Sylvia.
...No, it seems there's no other way.
We can only hope that Sylvia's father is reliable and can actually solve this stalking case... or perhaps today was just an accident, and the food truck didn't serve food for some other normal reason?
Lynch tried to convince himself.
He sighed, shook his head, and first went to a nearby street shop to buy a discounted sandwich and a cup of coffee to fill his stomach. Then, he suppressed his chaotic emotions and prepared to leave the place.
Just then, a somewhat familiar voice suddenly came from behind him:
"Hey!...You're Lynch, right?"
Lynch turned around somewhat blankly, only to see a stylishly dressed young white man calling out to him from behind, carrying a selfie stick and striding towards him.
He was stunned for a moment before he remembered who this person was:
"You are... Lucas?"
"Ha, it really is Mr. Lynch! Long time no see! How have you been? How have you been? Still hunting those wretched rats with your slingshot?"
This person is none other than the internet celebrity who had met Lynch once before. He is a YouTuber known as "Lucas by the Sea," who focuses on filming strange and unusual things happening on the streets of Seattle and the lives of homeless people!
Seeing Lucas approaching him enthusiastically, Lynch gave a somewhat awkward smile:
"I haven't been killing rats much these past couple of days; I've been busy with other things."
"By the way, what are you doing here?"
Lucas walked over to him, first raising his selfie stick and snapping a photo of the two of them without a word, then turning to Lynch with a sunny smile:
"I heard there's a food truck on this street that recently started operating. The food they give out is delicious, and the young lady who serves the food is very pretty. It's very popular with the homeless people, and even some of the local residents sometimes come here to get free food. So, I thought I'd come and film some footage to see if I could make a video."
"only..."
He looked around, scratching his head in confusion. "Why can't I find that food truck? Mr. Lynch, do you know where that food truck is located?"
...Dude, you're really unlucky. The food truck wasn't even open for business on its first day, and you just happened to be there...
Lin Qi looked at him, remained silent for a few seconds, and then slowly said, "The food truck just happened to be closed today."
Lucas paused, somewhat surprised, and asked, "Not open today? Doesn't this food truck regularly provide free meals every morning?"
"That's true in theory, but..."
Lin Qi nodded, but didn't continue the conversation.
He didn't want to be too explicit, after all, he didn't actually know why the food truck hadn't set up its stall. And if he blindly shared his guesses with others, he might drag more people into it.
But Lucas wasn't the kind of person who would give up easily. From Lynch's tone, he seemed to have sensed something.
He squinted, scrutinized Lin Qi for a few seconds, and then tentatively spoke:
"It sounds like you... know something?"
