America: Starting with the Last Liberty

Chapter 12 Payment in Other Ways

Two days have passed since the Los Angeles Ring Road case, but there are still no leads.

The blue car and its driver seemed to have appeared out of thin air, leaving no trace whatsoever.

In fact, after the Los Angeles Police Commissioner issued the order, all the Los Angeles police officers had already used their connections and informants in the underworld to try to find out Rosen's identity.

Unfortunately, Rosen did indeed appear out of thin air more than a month ago, so the Los Angeles police couldn't find any trace of him.

Very few people knew Rosen, and those who did know he would generally not tell anyone.

The only person who could potentially expose Rosen's identity is Donnie, the undercover agent, but he's currently hesitant.

Donnie's current status prevents him from accessing internal police information, so he was unaware that the Los Angeles Police Commissioner had issued a death order, and his superior, Vincent, had not revealed this matter either.

Downey's biggest desire right now is to escape his undercover identity, which requires solving the bank robbery.

Therefore, Donnie ultimately chose not to leak Rosen's information. Otherwise, if Phil and Dennis gave up their crimes, he didn't know when he would be able to return to the police force.

Helpless, the Los Angeles police are preparing to find a scapegoat to let the matter drop.

Actually, he wasn't exactly a scapegoat. It was just that the Los Angeles police happened to catch a habitual speeder during a raid, and after reaching a deal with him, they got him to admit that he was a speeder on the Los Angeles Ring Expressway.

This guy has a series of crimes including drug possession, drug trafficking, and driving under the influence of drugs, and his sentence could reach more than ten years, and he is not allowed to be paroled.

If the sentence can be reduced through cooperation with the police, of course I would not refuse.

The Los Angeles Police Department then quickly held a press conference to announce the case's closure to the media and the public.

At the press conference, Fox News anchor Megan Kelly sensed something was wrong when she saw the scapegoat with severe dark circles under her eyes and a visibly listless demeanor.

Megan Kelly bluntly questioned Vincent, who was representing the Los Angeles Police Department at the press conference.

That's right, Vincent caught this habitual speeder. He used his undercover agents to capture the criminal and, after reaching an agreement, attended the press conference as a representative of the police.

"Officer Vincent, is this really the driver of the blue car on the Los Angeles Ring Expressway on the night of May 1st?"

Vincent gave Megan Kelly a very affirmative answer with a formulaic smile on his face.

"Yes, the police have ample evidence that Mr. Walter Field was the driver of the blue sedan, and he himself has admitted it."

Vincent's meaning was very clear: since they've already admitted it, you shouldn't dig any further.

Most media outlets are respectable people, and the Los Angeles Police Department has to be given face. Otherwise, if you're blacklisted, the police won't care if your house gets burgled one day.

Even if you're not on the blacklist, the police might not care, since capitalist people shouldn't rely on the government but should help themselves (a famous quote from the governor of Texas).

However, Megan Kelly is the kind of media person who likes to take things seriously.

"But this Mr. Walter Field is completely different from the person filmed that day! Although the video is blurry, you can still see that the driver of the blue car has obvious Asian features, but Mr. Walter Field is a typical Onsa person!"

Vincent never expected that a media person would be so disrespectful, but he reacted very quickly and gave a somewhat acceptable reason.

"That's because Mr. Walter Field was attempting some disguise that day, but he was still successfully apprehended by the Los Angeles Police Department! Okay, that concludes today's press conference!"

After saying that, Vincent hurriedly left the press conference with Walter Field.

This situation made all the news media present realize that there was something wrong with the case, but since the perpetrator himself had confessed to the crime, no one could say anything.

"Hmph! You think you can get away with this? I'm going to find the real driver and create a bombshell!"

Megan Kelly's eyes gleamed; once she uncovered the truth of the case, she was sure to become a nationally sought-after media personality.

However, upon returning to Fox, Megan Kelly was met with a major setback when the news channel's executives explicitly told her not to investigate further.

"Why? Isn't this news explosive enough?"

"This is an order from above. Maybe they reached some kind of agreement with the Los Angeles Police Department?"

Yes, America is also socially conscious. If you can't see social skills, it's probably just because you're not qualified to talk about them.

Megan Kelly bit her lip, her exquisite face filled with resentment.

The supervisor also offered Megan Kelly a word of advice.

"Meghan, I know you're new to the news media industry and might find it hard to adjust. But that's just how the world is; it won't change because of one or two people. You should learn to adapt to it."

The supervisor explained the adult world to Megan Kelly, but the blonde news anchor, who had just graduated, was clearly still a bit headstrong.

Why must we adapt to the world instead of changing it?

After saying that, Megan turned and left.

Looking at the blonde news anchor's slender back, the supervisor shook his head.

"Young people!"

Perhaps this manager was once a passionate young man like Megan, trying to change the world with his enthusiasm after graduation, but was ultimately defeated by reality and became the pot-bellied, worldly-wise news channel manager he is today.

Leaving aside Megan Kelly's plans to investigate the truth, Rosen went to the newly opened Zangie Vicky bar near dusk, hoping to get his hands on the intelligence he had bought for ten thousand dollars as soon as possible.

"Why are you here so early today?"

Svefa had a cigarette dangling from her mouth; beautiful women look good even when they smoke.

Especially the way her full, red lips bit the cigarette holder.

"Ms. Svefa, I just want to get that information as soon as possible."

"What I promised, I definitely won't go wrong."

Svefa took a thick document from under the bar and handed it to Rosen, who in turn handed Svefa a small bag containing ten thousand dollars in cash.

Pay in one hand and deliver in one hand.

"Rosen, if you need to buy any more information in the future, feel free to contact me. I can give you a discount!"

"Oh? Can I get the information for free?"

Svefa licked her lips and looked at Rosen's lower body.

"Intelligence can't be given away for free, but it can be paid for in other ways!"
