"There's no need!" Lu Qianwei raised his hand to stop Jack's impulsive behavior.
Chapter 238 Zombie World 2
Lu Qianwei turned to Flink, who was blocking his way, and said slowly, "Saving people is no problem. I can bring your family here safely right now."
However, this is on the premise that they are still alive.
If it's a dead person, then I'm sorry.
“They must still be alive. I even spoke to them on the phone when the zombie outbreak happened!” Flink said with absolute certainty.
Lu Qianwei nodded. "Okay, give me the address and I'll see if I can help."
"They are right there..."
Having obtained the address, Lu Qianwei and Jack were about to leave. "By the way," Lu Qianwei said, "the three of you are just sitting here in this weapon shop, guarding a warehouse full of guns. You'll be living off it all sooner or later."
Doors and windows can keep out zombies, but they can't keep out hunger. When that day comes, you won't even be able to run away.
"So what? You want us to leave with you?"
“That’s right!” Lu Qianwei nodded and stated his purpose, “I plan to establish my own survivor force in this city.”
"Someone like you who's handled guns must have been in the military before, right?"
Before Flick could answer, Lu Qianwei interjected, "Someone as talented as you, old man, could easily teach those kids who've never fired a gun before at the base."
Flink narrowed his eyes and said slowly, "As long as you can get my daughter and five-year-old grandson out safely, my life is yours!"
The other two people hiding behind the container quickly chimed in: Tom, a clerk in his early twenties at Flink's store, and Pete, a bank manager who had escaped halfway through the trip.
The two were already on the verge of collapse from being cooped up in the closed shop. Hearing that there was a ready-made shelter, they nodded and agreed hastily: "We can work too! We'll go with you!"
Flink's daughter Evelyn and her family lived in the Oak Valley neighborhood, just four kilometers northwest of the hunting equipment store.
It is considered a mid-to-high-end residential area in the suburbs of the city center. The entire community is built along a low slope, and the only main road in and out is located at the bottom of the slope.
On the day of the zombie outbreak, a semi-trailer truck fully loaded with cement suffered brake failure and crashed straight into the automatic gate of the residential area. The overturned, massive truck completely blocked the gate, which, by sheer coincidence, kept the swarming zombies outside.
This is why there are many survivors in the community, since those who wanted to escape home couldn't go back at all, so there were naturally no infected people.
However, due to the commotion caused, dozens of zombies still roamed around and howled downstairs.
Some survivors, either observing the situation or waiting for military rescue, came to the rooftop.
"There are 37 zombies downstairs," one person counted.
"There are too many; we simply can't handle this with our small numbers," someone immediately said, frowning with worry.
"Hmph, we can easily stab them to death one by one in front of the security door!" a bald man scoffed disdainfully.
What was more agonizing than fear was the dwindling food supplies, especially water; without water, they wouldn't survive more than seven days.
"The government broadcast said that there would be rescue in 48 hours, but it's been several days now!"
"We didn't even hear a single gunshot!" Bald Buck slammed the fire axe in his hand onto the concrete ground of the rooftop, sending dust flying.
The burly man who runs the gym has bulging muscles all over his body. "Staying here will only lead to your death. There are thirty-seven zombies downstairs."
The eight of us took turns poking at them, at least to get rid of them first.
There were eight men and women standing on the rooftop. In response to the bald man's suggestion, the retired security guard Ron immediately chimed in, "I agree with Buck. The signal has been down for three days, and the radio is practically mute. Even if the army comes, it won't be our turn."
Some people were afraid; the young elementary school teacher clutched a kitchen knife tied to a mop handle, her lips turning white.
"I can't wait!"
No matter how much they argued, the food couldn't be conjured up, so the eight people ultimately decided to risk going out.
The group quickly took stock of their weapons: four spears with cleavers stuck deep inside, Buck's fire axe, Ron's riot baton, eight Molotov cocktails made from empty wine bottles filled with alcohol, and a nail gun with fifteen nails found in the security room—enough to make do with weapons.
The operation was scheduled for half an hour later, when the sun was setting and the sunlight was slanting at the zombies' eyes, making them react much slower than at noon—the perfect time.
The eight people tiptoed down the stairs and quickly cleared out the zombies wandering downstairs one by one through the security door.
Perhaps because they had stabbed the zombie, the eight men were no longer as nervous as before.
After opening the security door and moving the bodies aside, the group carefully approached the overturned semi-trailer cement truck.
As they climbed up the truck bed, the group carefully peeked out, just enough to get a clear view of the bottom of the slope.
There were at least a hundred zombies wandering around outside.
After careful observation, everyone realized that not all the zombies were looking in the same direction.
Some stood there bewildered, staring into the distance; others hid motionless in the shadows; and only a few moved slowly with faltering steps.
Through the observation of eight people, a pattern was quickly discovered.
"Let's go!" Ron shouted, and climbed down from the truck bed first, with the five men crouching low.
He crept towards the supermarket along the roadside bushes, when he bumped into two lone zombies walking back. Kyle approached from behind and thrust his spear deep into the zombie's eye socket, piercing its brain. The zombie collapsed without even a sound.
I made my way smoothly to the back door of the supermarket, which was a steel fire door with a combination lock.
Ron used to work at the supermarket and remembered the password. Fortunately, the power was still on, so he entered the password and the door opened smoothly.
The door opened a crack, revealing a dark interior filled with a musty smell mixed with the stench of rotting flesh. Kyle, spear in hand, went in first, shining his flashlight around the room.
The first floor of the store was filled with crooked and twisted shelves. Only two zombies heard the noise and swayed as they pounced out from behind the shelves.
One was a middle-aged woman in casual clothes, and the other was a deliveryman in a uniform; they had clearly fled in and been infected on the day the outbreak began.
Old Joe charged in from the side, his spear plunging deep into the back of a zombie's neck. Kyle swung his axe at the top of another zombie's head, the sound of bones shattering echoing loudly. Both zombies instantly collapsed to the ground, motionless.
The group tiptoed inside, and when they reached the warehouse entrance, they encountered another zombie hiding behind a pile of goods. Ron smashed it on the head with his club, smashing half of its head off and eliminating it.
After a 15-minute search, the group confirmed that there were indeed only these three zombies in the supermarket.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Lisa leaned against the shelf, clutching her chest and panting, and chuckled softly.
"Everyone, please eat something first to replenish your energy before heading back."
Without their teammates saying anything, the others had already started eating with their water and food.
Next came the packing. No one dared to delay. Everyone split into several groups, prioritizing the lighter items such as canned goods, compressed biscuits, and water.
Evelyn specially brought a small box of children's milk, thinking of taking it back to her five-year-old son, Tommy.
Half an hour later, two handcarts and three large sacks were stuffed full and piled up at the back door.
It was impossible for everyone to simply carry a large amount of food and go directly there.
Someone needs to make some noise to distract them, otherwise it will be very difficult for them to take the food back to get it.
However, it had been planned beforehand that Buck would use Molotov cocktails to lure the zombies away.
Of course, when he said he was going to lure them away, he wasn't just foolishly running out on foot to do it.
Instead, they climbed up to other floors from the supermarket rooftop. They had already observed from the rooftop of their residence that there were no zombies up there.
Therefore, with the cover of the two men, Buck quickly and successfully reached the rooftop a few hundred meters away.
As he shouted, the nearby zombies indeed ran towards him like mad dogs.
Buck took the opportunity to smash a number of Molotov cocktails down, burning the zombies until they sizzled and smoked.
After there were not many zombies left, Buck climbed back safely, but he had an accident on the way and accidentally scratched his arm with a tree branch.
As the youngest among them, Jimmy was undoubtedly the most excited. Killing zombies in the game is nothing compared to experiencing it firsthand!
Then, at that moment, two zombies slowly emerged from the cold storage door in the corner of the warehouse.
Upon seeing people, they lunged straight at them with their frozen, stiff limbs.
Those were the supermarket owner and cashier. On the day the zombie outbreak occurred, they hid in the cold storage, but unfortunately, they were bitten by the zombies that followed them in.
The low temperature slowed their movements, but they didn't die. Now, the smell of living people instantly triggered an explosive force.
Before anyone could react, Jimmy was already face to face with the other person, and screamed in fright.
The first zombie had already lunged at his neck, but fortunately, a team member was closest and reacted quickly.
As he kicked Jimmy away and tried to retaliate, a second zombie pounced. Unable to dodge in time, he was bitten hard on the carotid artery.
In the blink of an eye, one of their teammates was gone. The zombies that had been drawn away by the firelight happened to be nearby and stopped when they heard the shouts.
Even after the remaining seven people dealt with the zombies, the supermarket they were in was blocked from returning by more than twenty zombies.
The sound of pounding and screaming filled the air as the steel back door shook violently.
Everyone looked grim upon seeing this; who would have thought that the cold storage housed zombies?
It's no longer important who opened the cold storage; what matters is how they get back.
The roar of twenty zombies doesn't mean there are only those zombies.
Their cries, along with the raging fire nearby, attracted almost all the zombies within a radius of several kilometers.
Well, all their efforts were in vain, and one of them even lost his life.
"Damn it, aren't there plenty of alcohol in the supermarket?"
"We'll have to make a few more Molotov cocktails and repeat the same trick. We won't be able to get out until we burn all these zombies." Buck said bitterly, clutching his bandaged arm. No one had expected such an unexpected turn of events.
"That's all we can do."
There's not much to say. They won't be able to bring the food back unless they lure those monsters away.
It took most of the time to neatly stack more than twenty brand-new Molotov cocktails in the corner, the pungent smell of alcohol mixed with the smell of liquor overpowering the fishy stench in the air.
The group split into two teams as planned: Buck led Jimmy and Joe to the east rooftop, while Ron led Kyle and Lisa to the west rooftop.
Evelyn stayed at the back door to provide backup, keeping an eye on the movements of the zombies blocking the door. Once an opening was created, she would open the door and let everyone rush in.
The two teams crouched low and quietly climbed up the supermarket's fire escape to the roof, spreading themselves out more than fifty meters apart. They used the noise of smashing empty bottles to attract attention, and soon the zombies smashing the door next to the supermarket were drawn to them.
Buck was the first to light the fuse, and only after the flames licked his palm did he aim hard at the pile of zombies downstairs and throw it out.
The glass bottle shattered on the concrete, and the orange-red flames first engulfed the three unfortunate zombies that were closest to it. Then, the crowd quickly spread, triggering a chain reaction that burned out a large group of zombies.
On the other side, Ron and his group also caught fire. The zombies felt no pain and did not know how to avoid it, so they pushed and shoved into the fire. Many of them were burned to the ground in no time, their flesh sizzling and dripping oil. The whole area was filled with a pungent burnt smell.
When the two groups returned to the supermarket, only five or six zombies remained blocking the door, stubbornly banging on it.
This was the moment everyone had been waiting for; if they didn't move now, another wave of zombies attracted by the firelight would definitely appear.
