Chapter 43 Leona is drunk

"A...BC! Come quickly! Come and drink and make merry with this princess!"

As Abyss and Rebecca approached Leona, who was sitting at the table drinking, they heard her cheerful greeting.

Seeing Leona's flushed face and her brighter smile than ever, making her look incredibly adorable, Abyss couldn't help but be a little surprised. Was Leona drunk? Shouldn't the undead be immune to alcohol?

“She ordered a drink with a magic potion. According to the bartender, the potion in this drink can make people feel drunk. It’s specially for people who want to get drunk but are afraid of hurting their bodies.” Flora looked at Leona with affection. “The bartender said that if you can drink three glasses of this drink without passing out, it’s free. Leona ordered three glasses and drank them all. And now she’s like this.”

"Hehehe...you're all here." Leona, holding an empty wine glass, leaned on Flora's shoulder and looked at Abyss and Rebecca with slightly unfocused eyes. "Sit down quickly. Flora guessed you'd want some drinks, so she got one for each of you. Drink up...burp...I can have another barrel!"

Abyss and Rebecca sat down, and Flora pushed two glasses of wine toward them at the same time.

"Thank you, that's so thoughtful." Rebecca thanked her and took the wine, then sniffed it briefly, pointing with some surprise at the strong aroma emanating from the glass. "Flora, the wine you ordered is exactly my favorite! What a coincidence!"

“I guessed based on your personality. I’m so glad you like it,” Flora said with a gentle smile.

Abyss took a sip of the wine in his cup and realized it was the same wine he had drunk at the dwarf's tavern. It was indeed his favorite when he drank with Leona, but he hadn't mentioned it to anyone. Yet, Flora had noticed it nonetheless. Flora truly was a perfect match; she could always make Abyss feel comforted and at ease.

“I really like this wine, thank you for remembering, Flora,” Abis said gratefully. Flora’s face flushed slightly, and she nodded, pursing her lips.

"What are you two talking about... Come and drink with this princess!" Leona exclaimed in a coquettish voice, clinking her empty glass against Abyss's and Rebecca's glasses. "Cheers... hiccup!"

"It seems you two had a good time at that alchemist's gathering. You both seem to be in good spirits," Flora said, holding a glass of mild liquor and looking at Rebecca's face.

“Yes, that’s right. I gained a lot of new inspiration while talking with those alchemists, but I don’t plan to get busy with work right now. After we finish our drinks here, we should find a place to rest. I’ll take you to find the most comfortable hotel in town later. It used to be owned by a gang, but those gangs don’t exist anymore, and I don’t know who runs it now.” Rebecca said, affectionately stroking Leona’s silver hair. Leona, now quite tipsy, wasn’t shy at all, giggling happily.

"Are you and Leona happy?" Abyss asked. "Oh, needless to say, Leona seems to be very happy."

“We can relax here. We’ve been traveling with Gylvia the whole time, and although we’re not tired, it’s still been a rush. It’s nice to change things up now,” Flora replied. “The bar has a nice atmosphere, and most of the alchemists are very polite. No one is making a lot of noise here, and I really like the peaceful feeling. As for the drinks… well, I can’t get drunk anyway, so I’ll just treat them like regular drinks.”

"As long as you're happy, consider today's drinks a celebration for bringing Rebecca back from another world." Abyss raised his glass. "Let's clink glasses."

The four wine glasses clinked together softly, making a crisp sound.

……

Leona is conflicted. She experienced the feeling of complete relaxation after getting drunk through the potion and should be drowsy. However, her undead constitution prevents her from falling asleep normally. Drunk, she keeps clinging to Flora and acting coquettishly, looking more and more like a child who has been taken out to play.

As a gentleman, Abyss naturally couldn't let Flora, this frail girl (at least that's how she appeared), carry her on his back, so he offered to pick up Leona.

Leona was much more well-behaved in the Abyss's arms. Although she wasn't asleep, she still buried her face in the Abyss's chest quietly, without making a sound.

"Alright, it's about time we left." Rebecca took Flora's hand and walked out with her, saying with a sigh of relief, "Actually, I'm not a very good person when it comes to enjoying myself. I spend most of my time in the lab staring at reagent bottles. I was worried that this place, which I like, wouldn't suit your tastes, but seeing you all having fun makes me feel much better."

“I’m not really good at enjoying myself, and Leona is as simple as a child. The one who’s the most fun-loving among us is probably Abyss,” Flora laughed. “He’s always been very creative.”

"You flatter me." Abyss was quite proud after Flora praised him for being good at having fun. "Well, I learned all the magic I was supposed to learn a long time ago, so I can only spend the rest of my time digging graves and thinking about how to make life more interesting."

“Oh right, you know that crazy plan you told me about—killing the creator god, right?” Rebecca lowered her voice. “You have to tell me about it when we go to the hotel tonight! I’m really curious about what you’re planning to do, and what you guys have done before. Tonight is a great opportunity!”

“Of course, no problem. The story we’ve been through is as fascinating as the mind of a Shadow Demon.” Abyss winked at Rebecca. “You definitely won’t be disappointed.”

……

The four of them walked out of the alchemy club's gate, chatting and laughing, and gradually disappeared into the darkening streets.

At the entrance, a gatekeeper responsible for collecting admission fees watched the four of them disappear in the direction they had vanished, and patted his pockets with satisfaction.

"Hey, I thought today would be just another ordinary day, but then I suddenly got a tip. I'm definitely going to treat myself to a drink at the bar after get off work." He crossed his legs, one foot swinging rhythmically. "But those four guys were really weird. Why were they talking to thin air when they came in? And then they just casually pulled out the money for five people... Ugh, I can't think about it anymore, it's kind of creepy..."

He looked around a little nervously before getting back to work.

Chapter Forty-Four: The Next Plan Against the Lord of Nightmares

The largest hotel in Lavoisier is located in the city's most bustling commercial district. It's a five-story building with a huge neon sign advertising its potion on the exterior, making its name, "Brown Owl Hotel," visible from afar. From its entrance, one can see well-dressed, seemingly wealthy merchants occasionally entering and exiting. The brightly lit windows indicate that the hotel is currently open for business; the conflict between the city's two major gangs today hasn't affected its commerce.

While this building cannot compare in size to the upscale hotels in the commercial metropolis of Golden Griffin, it is still quite charming due to Lavoisier's unique avant-garde architectural style and captivating neon-lit night view.

Rebecca had her own residence in Lavoisier before her death. Although she knew of the place, she had never been there. This time, she finally had the opportunity to rest in such a luxurious place, and she seemed very happy. The drunk Leona had stopped causing trouble and nestled quietly in Abyss's arms like a kitten, much more docile than usual. Flora, however, was somewhat worried about whether the area would be harassed by gangs. After all, the leader of the Sheep's Eye Gang had just been arrested by Titus today and was probably enjoying Titus's favors. Without their leader, it was uncertain whether the Sheep's Eye Gang could maintain discipline.

Upon inquiring at the front desk, they learned that the inn had become the property of Emperor Campbell. The gangs who once ruled Lavoisier had been utterly humiliated by Lanis's bombing and left, leaving the inn abandoned. However, ten years ago, Emperor Campbell purchased the building from his own funds, and it has now become Lavoisier's designated venue for entertaining distinguished guests. Of course, as long as you have enough money and understand the importance of discretion on the emperor's territory, you are welcome to stay. Due to security concerns, Lavoisier doesn't have a large number of tourists, but the merchants who come and go are mostly incredibly wealthy from the potion trade, contributing a significant amount to the emperor's personal treasury each year.

“We need two rooms, one for the three of us girls, and one for him alone,” Rebecca said to the receptionist. “Make it as luxurious as possible, money is no object.”

The receptionist didn't dare to be negligent. Although the man and three women in front of them didn't seem particularly remarkable, Rebecca and Flora exuded extraordinary poise. Abyss, holding Leona in his arms, lacked any imposing presence, but his expression was extremely composed, as if he had seen it all. The rooms were quickly arranged—two adjacent, luxurious rooms costing nearly three hundred Imperial Coins per night. For ordinary people, this was a considerable expense, but for the four who were now incredibly wealthy, it was merely a drop in the ocean.

“I thought you’d ask to share a room with the Abyss, and he’d definitely agree,” Flora whispered with interest as they walked to the room. “Even though nothing’s going to happen, isn’t this the best chance to get closer to you two?”

“To be honest, I really wanted to use this opportunity to get closer to the Abyss, but thinking about it, I decided against it. There’s plenty of time.” Rebecca shook her head slightly. “You probably noticed, right? There’s someone who needs this night more than I do.”

The two exchanged a knowing glance at Leona, who was nestled in Abyss's arms, and then smiled at each other.

……

The advantage of a luxury hotel is that everything is convenient. Abyss was led to his room by a hotel waiter, and after taking off his clothes, he took a comfortable hot bath in the attached bathroom. The customs of the Eastern Empire are different from those of the Western Empire. The people of the Eastern Empire prefer to soak in warm water, rather than jumping from scalding hot water to icy cold water like the tough people of the Western Empire.

During this time, he also used magic to create two skeletons to scrub his back, completely relaxing all his muscles. Only then did he clean himself up and lie down on his bed.

So much had happened in such a short time. Even though Abyss had far more energy than the average person, he couldn't help but feel a bit tired. Completely draining his strength, he lay sprawled on the bed and began to think about how to deal with the Lord of Nightmares.

This mysterious fellow didn't seem friendly towards the Abyss. To this worldly gourmet, the Abyss's fear was an incredibly tempting delicacy, and he was certainly still craving it. Although he temporarily withdrew after the Abyss displayed a surprising method, he didn't specify how much time the Abyss would give him to recuperate. His intelligence was worlds apart from that of the Lord of the Fallen; the Abyss's previous methods of deceiving children would certainly have no effect on this cunning fellow.

What should we do...? Based on the information we have so far, Abyss considered several options, but he felt that none of them might work on this guy. Perhaps we just don't have enough information right now. What Abyss needs to do is not just survive the Nightmare Lord, but to capture the Nightmare Lord and turn him into his own ally.

So there are two things to do next. One is to continue to acquire the power of the gods: he wants the power of both the creator god and the fallen god. The other is to follow Gylvia back to the Kingdom of Ossi and see for himself what value this Prince Kevin, whom the Lord of Nightmares claims he wants to use, has that makes him so valuable that a proud evil god would help him.

Thinking of this, Abyss yawned. He was still a living person after all. He had considered turning himself into an undead, but so far, there was no evidence that a necromancer could resurrect himself. The bonds of necromancy could not bind oneself. As for letting someone else resurrect him, what a joke. Abyss would not allow anyone else to become his master, not even gods, let alone mortals.

Abyss rolled over on the huge, soft bed beneath him, used a small spell to turn off the potion lamp in the room, and then prepared to go to sleep.

But just as he closed his eyes, a series of small footsteps came from outside the door, heading this way. Abyss opened his eyes again upon hearing these sounds.

Then, there was a gentle knock on the door. The sound was irregular but soft, and you could tell it was a small hand knocking.

Abis immediately knew who it could be. He got out of bed, put on the hotel's complimentary slippers, and went to the door to open it.

Outside the door, under the corridor lights, stood a small figure with long, slightly damp silver hair draped over her shoulders, clutching a pillow in her arms. It was Leona, her face slightly flushed.

"A...BC, this princess wants to sleep, quickly help this princess fall asleep!" Leona said to Abyss in a slightly tipsy commanding tone, but her voice was as soft as a little kitten.

Chapter Forty-Five: Truth Revealed After Drinking

Abyss couldn't help but smile when he saw Leona's adorable appearance. He bent down and touched Leona's still slightly damp silver hair, and a pleasant floral scent wafted over.

"What's wrong? Are you uncomfortable resting with Flora and Rebecca?"

"I told you, I want to sleep. I can't sleep without your help, do I? Do I need to tell you that?!" Leona walked into Abyss's room without saying another word, her slippers making a clattering sound as she walked.

Abyss didn't refuse and even gently closed the door after Leona came in. If it were an ordinary sixteen-year-old boy, he might have slightly declined Leona's request to sleep with him out of shyness or reserve, but fortunately, Abyss didn't care about such things at all, because he was completely oblivious to the embarrassment that most people would feel.

Leona walked silently to Abyss's bed, threw a pillow on it, jumped up, kicked off her slippers, and sprawled out on top. She was so light that the bed didn't creak even after she jumped.

“Of course I can stay with you. Come, close your eyes, and I’ll use necromancy to help you fall asleep,” Abyss said with a smile as he stood by the bed and spoke to Leona, who was lying on it.

"Hmm..." Leona obediently closed her eyes, her face still flushed, and her voice sounded more languid and dull than usual.

Abyss was somewhat surprised by the potion's potion she had drunk at the bar. He then lay down next to Leona and gently held her hand, which was still warm from her recent hot bath.

As the Abyss grasped her hand, Leona's body stiffened for a moment, but then quickly relaxed.

“No rigor mortis this time, Leona, not bad.” Abyss smiled and praised.

"Abyss, I'm sorry..."

But this time, Leona's response was different from her usual shy and angry one; instead, she murmured softly.

Before Abyss could even use necromancy to calm her mind, he was surprised by Leona's sudden apology and said, "Hmm? What's wrong, Leona? Did you catch Flora's bad habit? Why are you suddenly apologizing?"

“Abyss, I feel like I’ve always treated you badly… but why are you never angry…” Leona continued.

Even the slow-witted Abyss could tell that Leona was serious now. He thought for a moment and then replied, "I'm not angry because I don't think you've treated me badly. Look, in that battle with Dalan, didn't you defeat that guy because of your perfect teamwork with Flora? Although you always say you're not willing to back down, you've always been on my side. The kind of familiar I want isn't someone who blindly flatters me or affirms me, but someone I can completely trust and who is willing to stand by me through thick and thin—aren't you that kind of person?"

"Hmm... will you distance yourself from me and Flora in the future because you've fallen in love with Rebecca?" Leona didn't continue Abyss's line of thought, but instead asked another question.

“Oh, you mean Rebecca has been trying to win my favor? Actually, I’ve never been in a relationship before. To be honest, I don’t really have any thoughts about being in a relationship right now, since I have a very interesting thing to do right now—to kill the Creator God. Before that, I probably won’t consider such things, but if, and I mean if, Rebecca really does captivate me, I promise I will never distance myself from you and Flora. Even if you’re not my lovers, you’re still my family, in other words, my relatives.” Abyss glanced at Leona beside him, and Leona, sensing his gaze, opened her eyes and met his eyes.

"...Are we already family?"

“Of course, although we are not related by blood, the three of you are all my family,” Abyss patiently replied to Leona, who seemed to be drunk.

"So, what kind of family do you consider me to be? A younger sister?"

"Hmm... how should I put it, I'm closer to her than a sister," Abyss said after a moment's serious consideration, her tone devoid of any perfunctory or deceptive intent.

"Closer than a sister? Do you mean to see me as... a wife... a wife?"

“No, we’re even closer than wives. The bond between us is far stronger than marriage,” Abis laughed.

Leona fell completely silent, her eyes tightly shut. Abyss's darkvision, aided by the neon lights streaming in from the window, revealed that Leona's face was flushed. He wondered, could this potion have side effects?

"I...I want to sleep. Use magic to calm me down." After a long silence, Leona finally gave the order to Abyss, who was completely unaware that she had unintentionally said something very flirtatious. Abyss obediently began to cast the magic, applying the calming effect to Leona alone.

Was Leona really drunk? She couldn't say for sure. She'd just been thinking a lot in her drunken state after drinking the potion-laced liquor. Rebecca's arrival had instilled a sense of crisis in Leona. While she liked Rebecca, she was also worried that the Abyss and Rebecca would fall in love with each other, leaving her and Flora as alienated figures. Rebecca was beautiful, intelligent, and understanding; it would be hard for any boy to resist her advances. Even though the Abyss was a powerful necromancer, he was still a sixteen-year-old boy before this.

She didn't know where these complicated emotions in her heart came from. Was it love? She had never fallen in love with any boy before, so she didn't know, but Abyss's place in her heart was more important than anyone else before.

She once possessed unparalleled skills and was the emperor's daughter, seemingly living a life of unparalleled glory in the eyes of ordinary people. But only she knew that because of her status as an illegitimate child, no one in the aristocratic circle truly respected her. Her immense power was nothing more than a pawn to be used. Everyone treated her as a tool. The emperor only occasionally showed her concern out of a sense of paternal responsibility. To avoid unnecessary trouble for her in the palace, her mother severed all contact with her. She couldn't obtain the love she needed from anywhere—the love a child needs to grow up. She could only attract attention through making a fuss and acting out.

Leona grew up amidst the indifference and disdain of those around her, developing a willful and capricious temperament.

Leona died at an age when she should have been as radiant as a summer flower, amidst the humiliation inflicted by the Queen and the disappointment of her father.

She was the first Abyss to consider her a close companion and to entrust himself to her; he gave her everything he had ever dreamed of.

So she was afraid, much more afraid than Flora, afraid of losing the Abyss and returning to loneliness.

But now, having received Abyss's promise and explanation, she finally felt relieved.

As her consciousness sank into the deep darkness, Leona felt increasingly sleepy and eventually fell into a deep sleep.

In the darkness, two figures, tightly embracing each other, gradually emerged...
