"We just want to survive, instead of having to keep wandering."
"The world has been destroyed, and we have lost our meaning as gods; we can only be good servants."
Leona listened to the two goddesses' advice and nodded slightly. They were right; when the world was destroyed, they would lose their meaning as gods. According to the Abyss, the gods of each world were created by the creator god to manage and protect that world, but when the world was destroyed, the meaning of these gods' existence completely disappeared. Their sole purpose in continuing to act was survival. This was the same for both the ordinary otherworldly gods who had inexplicably regained their past memories and the extraterrestrial evil gods who had forgotten their former identities; all their goals were simply to survive.
Perhaps a malevolent god with a personality like the Lord of Nightmares might have some other pursuits, but those are still based on the fundamental act of "eating".
After careful consideration for a long time, Leona finally made up her mind. She nodded to the two goddesses who had wandered from another world and said, "Alright, teach me your language now, but I may not be able to use it."
"We don't ask our owners to do anything; they just need to protect their own safety."
"We awaken because of our master; without our master, we will fall asleep again and return to our eternal drifting."
"Our power is merely a trump card for our master; we will not directly benefit from its use."
“Since our master has agreed to accept our knowledge, we will teach these languages to our master. Please listen attentively…”
……
Abyss lay in bed with Leona that night. After helping Leona fall asleep, he relaxed and got a good night's sleep himself.
Abyss was awakened by a pair of tiny hands at dawn.
"You stinky ABC! Get up!" Leona's voice, both embarrassed and angry, rang in Abyss's ears.
Having just enjoyed a full night's sleep, Abyss rubbed his eyes and looked at Leona with some confusion, wondering why she was so angry.
"What's wrong, Leona?"
"You still have the nerve to ask me!" Leona's face was flushed, and her big green eyes glared fiercely at Abyss. "Me! Why was I in your bed! What did you do to me last night while I was drunk! Tell me the truth!"
"I didn't do anything, I just held your hand and slept with you." Abyss sat up and scratched his head, looking at Leona, who was wearing a bathrobe, her legs tightly pressed together, her silver hair disheveled because she hadn't slept properly the night before.
"You only slept once? What kind of sleep? An adult's sleep or a child's sleep?"
“I’m sixteen now… I guess I should be considered a child at that age.” Abyss didn’t understand Leona’s meaning. “Why are you asking this?”
"Hmph...I see..." Leona calmed down a bit, but a hint of displeasure still lingered on her face. "I...I was drunk yesterday and don't remember anything. If I said or did anything, you're not allowed to laugh at me..."
"It's alright, I remember. If you want to hear it, I can tell you right now." Abyss gently combed Leona's hair with his hand.
"No! Don't say it! If you dare say it, I'll bite you!"
“You’re already biting.” Abis pointed with his left hand to his right hand, which had been combing Leona’s hair but now had three fingers in her mouth.
Rebecca and Lannis had arranged to meet in the morning. After the four of them came out of their room and met up, they had a high-class breakfast at the upscale hotel. They left the hotel feeling refreshed, wearing clothes that had been washed and dried by the hotel staff.
"Oh my, it's been over forty years, and I'm eating again. It feels completely different." Rebecca breathed in the not-so-fresh but cool air outside and exclaimed, "I thought my stomach hadn't been used for over forty years and was completely ruined by now, but it's still pretty reliable. I didn't throw up anything I ate. —Abyss, I remember that ordinary undead can't eat regular food, right? Don't they get nauseous?"
Abyss nodded: "Yes, it's best for most undead to eat carrion, as it's better for their bodies. Eating human food, which contains all sorts of seasonings and is mostly cooked, is difficult for undead with their special digestive systems to digest properly. But you are different. My necromancy has been improved. Although what you eat cannot be absorbed normally by your bodies, it can undergo some magical reactions to become air and be slowly expelled through respiration—and don't worry, it won't have any taste."
"Although I can't absorb it, I can still enjoy the delicious food," Flora said with a smile. Since becoming an undead, she has been able to taste all kinds of delicacies and is now quite content.
"If you want to absorb it, I can also get you some rotten flesh to eat..."
“That’s not necessary,” Rebecca immediately stopped her.
“Um…” Leona saw that there were no outsiders nearby, and suddenly raised her hand and whispered to the other three, “Actually, after I fell asleep yesterday, I dreamed about some things… I think you should listen to them.”
Leona, this spoiled princess, rarely showed such a weak expression. Since she had spoken, it must be something important. So the three of them stopped talking and listened attentively as Leona recounted what she had seen and heard the previous night.
Everyone was amazed to hear that the Lord of the Fallen could transform into two goddesses in Leona's dreams, and Leona also told everyone about the language she had learned from the two goddesses to summon their power.
Leona had initially intended to keep these things a secret, given the severe price that came with such power. However, this morning, she didn't even enjoy her meal properly, instead focusing on these matters. In the end, she chose to trust her companions and told them what had happened.
Flora gently grasped Leona's shoulder and cautioned, "The price of this power must be very high for you, so don't use it unless absolutely necessary."
"I know," Leona replied solemnly.
“The way Leona uses her power… has suddenly given me some bold ideas,” Abyss said abruptly. “Leona, you must ensure your safety. Don’t use this power carelessly. Sooner or later, I will help you think of a good solution.”
After patting Leona's head, Abyss turned to look at Rebecca beside him.
Rebecca said nothing, but as if she understood something about the Abyss, she narrowed her eyes slightly and a mysterious smile appeared on her lips.
Chapter 49 The Whereabouts of the Child Laborers
When the four of them arrived at the agreed location and met Lanis, she seemed to be fully prepared to leave Lavoisier and was sitting on the side of the road, leisurely smoking a cigarette.
Beside her sat a man, Titus, who was also puffing away on a cigarette. Titus had somehow found Lanis and was now enjoying a smoke with her. Lanis usually looked down on gangsters, but Titus seemed to have piqued her interest, and the two appeared to get along quite well. It seemed that Lanis had even given Titus the tobacco he was smoking.
"Oh, look who's here." Titus immediately stood up happily when he saw Abyss and his group walking towards him. "Mr. Abyss! My great benefactor!"
"Hmph, you've arrived right on time, just at the appointed time." Lanis stood up with a smile, walked to Rebecca's side, and said to her, "Rebecca, I've packed my bags. I've already entrusted the caravan to send the large items. I'm ready to go to the Western Empire to live my research life properly and will no longer get involved in these gangster messes."
“You don’t need to get involved, Ms. Lannis. Do you know why? Because Lavoisier is about to enjoy a peaceful and prosperous life, ha ha ha!” Titus laughed loudly. The passersby around him probably knew who he was, and they all kept their distance after hearing his laughter.
"Judging from what you're saying, Mr. Eugene must have had a very difficult time last night, right?" Abyss asked.
“Not just bad, but extremely bad.” Titus smiled smugly. “I didn’t kill him. He only suffered minor injuries and will probably be able to sit up after a month or two of bed rest. I just led him around and took over all his factories right before his eyes. The Sheep Eye Gang’s underlings are actually quite loyal. As long as I put a knife to their boss’s throat, they’ll obey. I took down all his potion factories with almost no trouble. It was wonderful… Um, by the way, I’d like to ask you for a favor, Mr. Abyss.”
Abyss thought for a moment and replied, "Just tell me if there's anything I can do for you, and I'll definitely help if I can."
“Yesterday I shut down six factories and rescued four hundred children from them. Aside from a few older children who are willing to work for me and receive adult wages, the vast majority don't want to stay in Lavoisier. We can't let our savage and cruel gang raise them. So, since Mr. Abis is planning to send away the children from the factory we took down together, could you expand the operation and send these children…”
“I can send any children who are willing to go… Well, if it’s a large group, I’d like your gang to send a convoy to take them to a designated place.” Abis replied nonchalantly. “You don’t need to worry that I’m a human trafficker. They’re going to the home of an acquaintance of mine. My acquaintance is very wealthy and should be able to provide the children with a good life.”
“How could I possibly suspect you of being a human trafficker? You’re joking again,” Titus said with a laugh. “No problem, I’ll hire a professional convoy, send a few reliable henchmen, and sign a few skilled mercenaries to take them away.”
Abis nodded: "I'll give you the address later. I'll also contact my acquaintances there. Your people will just need to give me my name."
“No problem, no problem,” Titus replied. “I will do my best. I believe Mr. Abyss’s acquaintances will be able to give them a bright future.”
Leona overheard their conversation and tugged at Abyss's sleeve, then whispered, "ABC, those child laborers Eugene uses, which acquaintance of yours are you planning to send them to? I didn't even know you had such an acquaintance. Are they reliable? Are they even alive? You're not going to send them to some graveyard, are you?"
Abyss bent down to listen to Leona finish her question, patted her head to reassure her, and then said, “Of course I won’t send these children to the cemetery. This acquaintance was actually a friend of my master, a very kind and reliable old mage. I originally thought of sending these children back to the orphanage until they reached adulthood, but then I thought that they came from orphanages all over the country, and it wouldn’t be fair to them to send them back. So I thought of my master’s friend.”
"What does he do? Is he also from the necromancy school? You don't want to raise all these kids to be necromancers," Leona asked curiously.
“Good necromancers must be trained from the very beginning, instilling a firm belief in them from a young age. Otherwise, the necromancer's creed will become empty words. They're all too old; I don't intend to train them to be necromancers.” Abyss shook his head seriously. “That old mage was a very learned man, not belonging to any particular school of thought, and he always wanted to be a great teacher. But simply not enough children could attend his classes. After all, most parents would rather their children learn to do chores at home than study. But this is a good opportunity. Children need a good education, and this old acquaintance of mine happens to be able and willing to provide one.”
“I see…that’s a good place for them.” Leona said thoughtfully.
Flora, who was standing nearby, also heard what the Abyss said and smiled. Universal education was her greatest goal in life, and she was naturally delighted to hear that the Abyss intended to educate these children who would otherwise be entering the workforce as cheap laborers in a few years.
“And… this old acquaintance of mine actually asked me to recruit some children to be his disciples a long time ago… He told me that as long as a large number of children come to his house to study, he will give me a surprise in a few years. I’m quite curious.” Abyss laughed. “It sounds like he’s an evil black magician with ulterior motives, right? But actually he’s very reliable. My master has always trusted him very much, and he has never let my master down.”
“That’s good. Although I’ve never met these children, as a knight of honor, I feel it’s my responsibility to care about them,” Leona said proudly as Abyss patted her head comfortably.
“Lanis, before we leave Lavoisier, I have someone I want to introduce you to. Would you like to come with me?” Abyss said to Lannis. “It shouldn’t take up too much of your time. She has some questions for you.”
“I knew you’d have something to ask of me, you little rascal.” Lanis chuckled, exhaling a cloud of smoke. “Titus, lead the way. The person the Abyss wants me to see must be with you, right?”
Chapter Fifty: Divination is Unreliable
Jivia didn't have to come to the Eastern Empire in person. Purchasing supplies doesn't require a leader's personal involvement; a trusted subordinate could easily handle the task—that's common sense. The reason Jivia was sent from her own base, traveling thousands of miles to the Eastern Empire, was because of a remark made by a fortune teller she had encountered.
Meeting Lanis Constable would rid her of her nightmares. This statement, which was initially utterly unbelievable, sounding like the ramblings of a con artist, had now become Gylvia's lifeline.
So, tormented by nightmares, she followed her party and finally arrived in the distant Eastern Empire. After many twists and turns and witnessing the great events that took place in the city of Lavoisier, Gylvia finally met the person she had always wanted to see with the Abyss.
Lanis, dressed in comfortable travel clothes, sat in the chair opposite Gylvia. On the way here, having heard that she was going to meet a princess of noble birth, Lanis had deliberately stopped smoking, taken a sip of a strange potion, created a small explosion in her mouth to get rid of the annoying tobacco taste, and casually tidied her hair with her hands—though it didn't look particularly neat afterward.
“You must be Lady Lanis Consden. It’s a pleasure to meet you. There’s no need for me to hide my identity from you. I am Princess Gylvia of the Kingdom of Ossi.” Gylvia smiled and extended a hand to Lanis.
Lanis smiled and took Gylvia's hand, though she didn't quite understand the complicated etiquette.
“I heard from Abyss that you are about to leave this city. I’m sorry to have to see you at this time, but I’ve come to you because I have something I need to ask you. I need to ask you some questions.” Gylvia didn’t intend to waste anyone’s time, so she got straight to the point.
Lanis seemed to like her way of doing things. She chuckled and said to Gylvia, "Princess Gylvia, please feel free to ask me any questions. I have a lot of experience in alchemy."
"I'm not quite sure if my needs are related to alchemy," Jivia smiled apologetically, then added, "I'd like to ask you first, do you know anything about the Lord of Nightmares?"
Lanis was stumped by Gylvia's question. She stared at the ceiling, racking her brains for a long time, then shook her head: "I don't know the Lord of Nightmares. Is he some famous mercenary? What decent person would have such a crazy name?"
“Hmm…it seems you don’t know this extraterrestrial evil god.” Jivia pursed her lips, a hint of regret in her voice. “To be honest, I’ve been tormented by the Lord of Nightmares for a long time now. You must know about the internal strife in the Kingdom of Ossi. I was driven out of the palace by my brother, Prince Kevin. After leaving the palace, Prince Kevin used some tricks and paid some price to have an extraterrestrial evil god called the Lord of Nightmares haunt me, causing me to have the same nightmare every night. My mind has been on the verge of collapse many times. A fortune teller once told me that as long as I met you, I could get rid of the nightmares.”
“Well… you’ve really come to the wrong person. I don’t know much about extraterrestrial evil gods, and my alchemy focuses on explosive and unstable compounds. I really don’t understand things like calming people’s minds.” Lanis pointed apologetically to herself. “You see, Your Highness, I myself am always in this state of high excitement and madness. How can I help others get rid of nightmares?”
Gylvia nodded with some difficulty: "So, you actually don't have any clue about my nightmares. Was what the fortune teller said false...?"
Lanis didn't think much of the profession of fortune teller, but she knew that her good partner Rebecca was particularly enthusiastic about divination and other mysterious things, so she didn't say anything.
Lanis had wondered if she knew anything about nightmares, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't recall ever having done any research or possessing any unusual insights in this area. As for extraterrestrial evil gods, the term was completely foreign to her. For most people on the continent, it was a completely incomprehensible concept; Lanis's knowledge of their existence was largely thanks to snippets of conversation she'd had with the Abyss.
“I’m sorry to have bothered you with these trivial matters, Ms. Lanis.” Gylvia paused briefly, sighed almost imperceptibly, then stood up with a smile and said to Lanis, “I won’t bother you any longer. Please continue your journey. Thank you very much for your help. In return, I can give you a fine horse that we brought from the Kingdom of Osi, which should be of some help on your journey.”
"Oh, thank you then. But I really apologize for not being able to help in the end," Lanis said, jumping up from her seat.
"Actually, I was just being foolish. I shouldn't have believed the fortune teller in the first place. Who in this world can see the future?" Gylvia shook her head with a wry smile.
Gylvia's highly anticipated meeting ended without yielding any useful information. Somewhat saddened, she saw Lanis to the door and was then escorted back by the loyal General Santos. Meanwhile, Abyss and his group temporarily left the Black Hat Gang's stronghold, preparing to send Lanis, who was eager to embark on her retirement journey, away from Lavoisier.
Lannis didn't leave immediately, but instead took a stroll around Rebecca's old house with a touch of nostalgia.
Watching the alchemists coming and going from the house that had been converted into a laboratory, Lanis nodded in satisfaction. This place had become the emperor's property and should be well preserved. If she had the chance to return to Lavoisier, a city full of memories, she wouldn't have to worry about not seeing this familiar old house again.
"Sigh, I just saw you, and now I have to leave." Lanis looked at Rebecca with some reluctance and said, "I've already written down your address. You must come visit me when you have time."
“You’ve lived for me for over forty years, now it’s time for you to live for yourself.” Rebecca knelt down and gently hugged Lanis. “Thank you for waiting all these years, Lanis. I will definitely come to see you someday, it won’t be long.”
“I’ve been waiting for you to say that.” Lanis hugged Rebecca tightly before leaving her embrace. She then looked at the others. “Abyss, you must make Rebecca happy. Come visit me again when you have the chance. Although we haven’t known each other for long, I really like you. And the other two girls, I don’t know you well, but you’ve made the right choice in following Abyss. Keep an eye on Abyss in the future.”
“I’m planning to buy a piece of land in the elven kingdoms and build a large cemetery as my home. It’s not far from yours. We’ll visit you together sometime.” Abyss grinned.
"Ha! You necromancers!" Lanis laughed and nodded, then said to Titus, who had followed her out, "Titus, I'm leaving. If I hear that Lavoisier is suffering under your rule, I will return. Remember that!"
Chapter 51 The Heavyweight Behind-the-Scenes Boss
Upon hearing Lanis's words, Titus suddenly dropped the smile that had been plastered on his face. He even took the spoon out of his mouth and solemnly said to Lanis, "Lanis, I promise you, as long as I am the leader of the Black Hat Gang, Lavoisier City will be the city I protect. I will lead my brothers to make some money in the gray area, but the price will never be the destruction of Lavoisier City. Believe me, without the Sheep's Eye Gang, Lavoisier City will become increasingly wealthy, and it will never again be shrouded in darkness."
