“I already said it’s just on the surface…” Su Mo said, “This guy, if there are ten missing persons cases in the capital, eight of them are related to him. Of those missing persons, the three who are lucky will reappear in the lower district or even the middle district, begging with a missing arm or leg.”
"If I'm unlucky, I'll never appear in the capital again in this lifetime."
“Death or being sold elsewhere, is that it?” Tranton said, seemingly recalling his own experience, his fists clenched tightly.
“Yes, like those offerings… I think there must be some source.” Su Mo said, “The clues about the person behind the island have gone cold, so I think we can only start from here. Hopefully, that guy Aldrich knows something.”
“Wait a minute,” Tranton suddenly asked, “Even if Aldrich provided some of the sacrifices, shouldn’t his contact be that Gerald guy?”
“Gerald’s power is obviously not that great; he has no idea where the sacrifices came from,” Su Mo said. “Besides, people like that are usually very well-informed and might even know things that Wilfred doesn’t.”
"It's also very hard to find."
Tranton added, "Forget it, I don't care about any of that. I just want the final result. You can handle all of this." He was very adept at being a hands-off manager.
As Tranton said, people like Aldrich are as hard to find as sewer rats; even Wilfred only knew of one of his hideouts.
When Su Mo arrived there at a certain time, the place was already deserted. He made a few inquiries.
Su Mo was somewhat surprised to learn that Aldrich had been missing for six or seven days. The beggars under his command hadn't even handed in their earnings for three days.
"Six or seven days ago, that was when Tranton returned to the capital. It seems this guy knows something. How interesting, the people behind that island seem to like using lower-level people to get things done," Su Mo thought to himself.
From Lady Liz to Viscount Gerald, their status was relatively high compared to ordinary people, but it was insignificant compared to the power displayed by the island.
Now, with the addition of the King of Beggars, they are all just minor figures, insignificant pawns—but these very people are enough to maintain the island's stable daily operations.
At the same time, these people are very easy to control. You don't need to tell them too much; just give them enough benefits. They can hide themselves completely and reveal themselves at any time. This makes Su Mo admire the "human control" skills of the people behind the island.
"It really wasn't right for me to jump in headfirst." Shaking his head, Su Mo quickly left the lower city.
The day passed quickly, the sun set, night engulfed the earth, and the lights of the capital began to spread. However, for the people in one-third of the lower city, the entire night would be spent in darkness.
Hilton, who returned here, was no stranger to this kind of darkness, having lived in it for more than a decade.
The familiar person Su Mo mentioned was none other than Hilton, who had dressed up as a ghost at the manor that night.
Hilton grew up in downtown London and was a notorious pickpocket—her life was initially quite comfortable. However, unfortunately, after accidentally offending a "big shot" in downtown London, she was forced to flee with her younger siblings.
Hilton is a ruthless man; he fled directly to Worbs' estate.
She became the cook for the Worbus family, whether by sheer luck or misfortune.
Hilton was incredibly lucky because she was now financially secure and no longer had to worry about where to eat her next meal. She even had some extra money to buy herself and her siblings some nice new clothes.
It was unfortunate, because Hilton's fate was no longer in her own hands from that point on.
Instead, it was controlled by the man behind her, Sebastian, the butler of the Worbus family.
This is certainly not a happy thing.
Especially on nights like this, accompanying this man back to this slum that represents the darkness of the capital.
Chapter Thirty-Six: Jack the Ripper and the People of Chaoyang District
“Jack, I hope you are as familiar with this area as you say.” Su Mo pulled out a small, exquisitely crafted dagger, as if it were a work of art, yet extremely sharp, from somewhere and placed it in Hilda’s hand.
Looking at the dagger in her hand, Hilda couldn't help but sigh. In the past, with this, she could have cut open so many people's pockets.
Now, Hilda could only say, "My name isn't Jack." Her voice was low and sounded somewhat unsure of herself.
Speaking to people in this manner is almost impossible for Hilda, who lives in the lower rungs of the capital.
However, she has had quite a bit of contact with Mrs. Liz these days.
Everything about Lady Liz was something Hilda envied and longed for, but Lady Liz was as docile as a little rabbit in front of Su Mo, even more respectful—or rather, much more afraid—than when facing Tranton.
Although Hilda was a stubborn weed and somewhat wild, she was also a smart woman. She knew that it was not the time for her to show her personality and arrogance when facing the butler of the Worbus family.
Hilda did think about the cute and handsome young master, hoping to have a story like "a domineering nobleman falls in love with me" unfold, just like in a novel.
Unfortunately, the two have only met once so far, and Hilda has not had a chance to show her charm, which is completely different from that of a delicate noble lady.
“Okay, Jack, let’s not worry about the details.” Su Mo nodded.
"This isn't a matter of detail, is it?" Hilda had no good way to deal with the butler's stubbornness except to mutter to herself.
"You said you had to leave the lower city because you offended one of the Beggar King's henchmen, right?" Su Mo said.
"Ugh, that bastard actually wanted me to be his mistress! He should take a piss and see what kind of monster he looks like!" Hilda revealed her "tomboy" nature when she mentioned that person, cursing fiercely.
“Hmm, very good. If you can successfully find that guy’s hiding place, then you can take your revenge tonight,” Su Mo said.
"Is there something you want to get out of him?" Hilda asked cautiously.
Having spent several days at the manor, she had gained some understanding of the unique aspects of the Worbus family.
Su Mo shook his head: "Of course not, such a lowly soldier could not possibly know any useful information."
“So you mean…” Hilda paused for a moment.
“My hope is that you can kill him, with your trembling hands.” Su Mo’s gaze shifted to Hilda’s hands.
This woman has a very special trait: when she is emotionally agitated or extremely focused, her hands will tremble involuntarily.
Su Mo wasn't sure if this counted as a disease, but he knew it was a rather interesting thing.
“There are a lot of them…” Hilda said after a moment of silence.
She was a very skilled thief; climbing walls and sneaking in were not difficult for her, especially in a drafty and dark house in the downtown area.
However, it was impossible for her to kill one of the Beggar King's important subordinates. These guys were even more afraid of death than nobles, and even when they slept, they had several people guarding them tirelessly.
After all, the cost of killing a nobleman is unimaginable, but taking down a powerful thug in the lower city is something that can be done without considering any consequences.
"It's okay, I'll be behind you," Su Mo said, making his promise.
“I don’t understand, why me?” Hilda nodded, unable to contain her curiosity, and asked, “You should be able to do this very easily.”
She knew very well that the recent uproar in the capital was inextricably linked to the butler in front of her.
"Because I want to create a legend." Su Mo smiled. "Alright, go ahead, don't worry about anything... Wait, you don't faint at the sight of blood, do you?"
Hilda looked at Su Mo, a smile that was hard to decipher appearing on her face: "I killed someone when I was six years old. This capital city is too unfriendly to people like us. By the way, was that legendary name Jack?"
She remembered the strange way the housekeeper addressed her.
"Hmm, Jack the Ripper, does it sound good?" Su Mo asked with a smile.
“It feels like it’s describing a man…” Hilda said truthfully, “I think ‘Dark Rose’ would be a better name.”
“Really? Then go ahead, Jack. Don’t let me down.” Su Mo nodded.
"So he really doesn't listen to anyone," Hilda could only mutter to herself.
That night, the man who once roamed the Lower City as the King of Beggars, a notorious figure who terrorized the city, died in his room, along with his six bodyguards and henchmen who were cursed every day.
Everyone's chest was ripped open, and the words "Jack the Ripper" were left in blood in the room.
In just half a day, this "Jack the Ripper" surpassed the original "Headshot Maniac" and became the talk of the town in the capital.
Over the next three or four days, more and more people died at the hands of Jack the Ripper, even though those who died deserved to die.
However, the brutal and cruel methods used still made this name a new synonym for terror.
For a time, many mothers would use this name to scare their disobedient children from making a lot of noise at night.
"The results are remarkable."
In the darkness, Su Mo looked at the piece of paper floating in his hand and murmured something.
The piece of paper in his hand seemed no different from before, but upon closer inspection, one would find that the damaged parts at the edges of the paper were slowly becoming smoother, showing a tendency to develop into a "complete shape".
This situation began when Su Mo started targeting those nobles.
Are negative emotions and fear the driving force behind the paper's recovery?
Su Mo didn't know why the piece of paper started to recover.
Jack the Ripper was one of Su Mo's experiments.
He wanted to know whether some kind of negative emotion, similar to fear, was being absorbed by the piece of paper.
"It just doesn't seem like it... If it were negative emotions, this piece of paper would have been restored long ago when I devoured those souls. On Earth, this piece of paper didn't change at all. Simple negative emotions shouldn't be the key to the paper's restoration; there must be other reasons."
However, the effects of the "headshot maniac" and "Jack the Ripper" did indeed cause the paper to begin to show signs of recovery, which is beyond doubt.
This means that Su Mo will definitely let Jack the Ripper's "urban legend of terror" continue, to see where its "limit" is and to what extent the piece of paper can be restored.
Tonight, Jack the Ripper's target is the King of Beggars—Aldrich.
When the King of Beggars returned to the capital, he went into hiding, and even Wilfred didn't know where he was hiding.
So Su Mo used a rather brutal method to find this guy—to kill all his men who were still active in the lower city, in the name of Jack the Ripper.
Now, Aldrich's men have been almost entirely killed or wounded, and his already lowly henchmen have scattered in all directions, rendering his title of King of Beggars meaningless.
Under such circumstances, Aldridge either chose to continue hiding and become like a real sewer rat, spending the rest of his life in a dark and sunless place.
Alternatively, find a chance to escape the capital as soon as possible to avoid the fate of death from befalling you.
As for resistance, Aldridge never even considered it.
However, the power of the people in the lower city of the capital is considerable. Aldrich, in the past, used his influence to commit countless heinous crimes throughout the lower city.
Now, he has been killed by Jack the Ripper and is left all alone, a lone commander.
At this crucial moment, the sharp eyes of the people of the capital played a vital role. Aldridge, who had been hiding, was found, and his hiding place was thus exposed.
Rumor has it that the first person to discover Aldridge lived in Chaoyang District, the best area in downtown London, and was known as the "Chaoyang District Masses".
“The people of Chaoyang District have done a great job again, Jack, don’t let them down,” Su Mo said to Hilda beside him.
"I was actually going to finish him off," Hilda said honestly.
“Without your finishing blow, there would be no Jack the Ripper. Be confident,” Su Mo said. The strange wounds Hilda’s trembling hands had cut were something even Su Mo couldn’t imitate; it was practically a unique testament to her skill.
"Who would be confident about something like this! It's not a good thing!" Hilda roared inwardly, then walked helplessly toward Aldrich's hiding place.
After learning that his hideout had been exposed and that he couldn't escape, Aldrich went to great lengths to find his last group of men and protect him, hoping for a chance to survive.
He is now hiding inside a spiky enclosure; once that enclosure is broken, he will be exposed.
Breaking through this barrier is certainly not a difficult task for Su Mo.
The darkness of night can conceal many things, and when Su Mo and his companion arrived near Aldrich's hiding place, no one noticed them.
