"Miss Mudrock, what's wrong?"
"Kal'tsit? What's wrong with Prince Wayne?! Why did he suddenly stop talking?! Fine, Kal'tsit will do! Kal'tsit, please help me, Ascarin ran away from home and hasn't come back yet!"
The screaming narration, coupled with the exaggerated volume and the disdainful remark, "Fine, Kal'tsit will do too," after a round of inhumane eardrum bombardment, Kal'tsit instantly recognized the person on the other end of the microphone.
"Warfarin, keep your voice down, it's four in the morning! And what happened to Ascaron?"
“Uh… was my voice loud? Never mind, it doesn’t matter. After we arrived in Sigraine, we attracted the attention of some people. Some people used the riots in Rembito to put pressure on us, trying to test our identity and strength. Our rented resort has been besieged for several days. Today, Ascalon couldn’t take it anymore and said he was going to beat up all the nobles in Sigraine in one night to give the enemy a taste of their power.”
Kal'tsit was so taken aback that she let out a wry laugh: "Beat them all up...?" She rubbed her temples and asked, "Didn't you stop her?"
"No, I was sleeping during the day. She only told Niyan about it."
"Didn't Mudrock stop her?"
“It was stopped,” Warfarin replied.
"And then what happened?" Kal'tsit asked, puzzled.
Warfarin shrugged: "Ascalon bypassed the mudstone, and the mudstone couldn't catch her."
Even a shield that blocks three attacks can't stop a warrior with a mace.
P.S.: While fighting rogues, I discovered a collectible that is a hidden blade. It was given to Ascalon by Theresis when she was working for the Military Council, and then Theresa helped her put it on.
This guy is truly a loyal follower of both sides, and he's even a fraternity member, haha.
The greatest emperor of Gaul was Corsica I. Everyone knows Napoleon was Corsican, sob sob, Napoleon lost the Battle of the Four Emperors, right? I originally thought that revolutionary France was absolutely inviolable, but YJ led the way in insulting even revolutionary France. I'm so, so, so sad, hahaha.
How about I write a story about a Gallic prince's restoration of his kingdom in my next book? Type "1" if you're interested!
There weren't many new roguelike illustrations this time; mostly new bosses got their own. However, quite a few new concepts were revealed. For example, the Gauls concept, and the bizarre idea of a pure-blooded lamprey. That pure-blooded lamprey with its face split into three pieces really cracked me up.
I hope the Blood Lord doesn't look like that too. I remember Warfarin was a pureblood Blood Demon, maybe she could also perform a marching drill? As for Kroos, that oil-drinking guy, forget it, he's a disgrace!
P.S.: I did okay on the English exam. I have another one this afternoon, keep it up!
Chapter Ninety, My Lord, It's Time for a Drink
"Phew, we've finally arrived."
Stepping off the aircraft, Wayne let out a long sigh of relief. This was the first time he'd spent almost a whole day in an aircraft, even though the pilot's skill was exceptional. However, due to limited resources and the external environment, the flight experience was far from comfortable. Turbulence was frequent, and occasional deviations from the flight path due to natural disasters ahead were also common. If it weren't for the fact that Originium fuel was more durable than petroleum fuel, Wayne was genuinely worried that the thing would crash through the air.
However, he arrived safely here—Sigleny, the capital of Rembitox, a large mobile city comprised of a joint arbitration council of nations, combining tourism and international trade.
"You can enjoy the scenery later after you finish your business, Your Highness. You have a lot to do right now and cannot rest for the time being."
Kal'tsit reminded him from the side,
"How do you plan to find Ascalon?"
Wayne nodded seriously, frowned, and, looking deep in thought, analyzed the situation with an air of expertise:
“Theresia, you said that Ascaron was born into the Kazdel Military Council and was a comrade-in-arms who fought alongside Theresis on the battlefield. She has rich combat experience and counter-surveillance awareness. Finding her will not be easy.”
Theresa nodded, affirming, "I did say that. And not only that, Ascalon's combat experience was already quite extensive before the war even began. The Sarkaz organization she was born into has always had a very special reputation and rules—those who enter the royal court are not distinguished by race; all are brothers. Therefore, they are also called the Brotherhood. They..."
"They are a very famous assassin organization, full of top-notch assassin masters, and they have existed for a very long time with a wide range of members. They have influenced many major historical events in the shadows. And they also have a sworn enemy organization called the Knights Templar?"
Wayne's abrupt reply interrupted Theresa's train of thought. Theresa paused, thought for a moment, and then exclaimed in surprise:
"Mr. Bruce, where did you learn about these things?"
Wayne's lips twitched, and he looked up at the sky with a sigh, replying, "How did I know that...? That's a long story."
Seeing that Wayne didn't seem to intend to elaborate, Theresa tilted her head curiously and explained:
"However, that's not entirely accurate. For example, the Brotherhood isn't actually as powerful as people say. They weren't even renowned in Kazdel's history, let alone influenced world history. Furthermore, their arch-enemy organization wasn't always called the Knights Templar. More accurately, the Brotherhood's arch-enemy is the Lateran Church, which initially formed the Church's anti-demonic crusade. After the crusade split, the Church's four major knightly orders emerged. In modern times, the Church's influence has declined from secular politics, and the four orders have disbanded. The Brotherhood's arch-enemy has become the Inquisition, the Court of Justice, and the Lateran Guard, all formed by the disbanded orders and their followers. Everyone is adapting to the times."
The only thing standing still is that game from a certain buggy company that's becoming increasingly invincible. Wayne thought to himself.
"So, finding Ascalon is very difficult. My idea is not to look for her. Let's wait for her to come back."
Wayne said, “She swept through the entire Sigraine overnight, infiltrating every force that might be interested in us. Although I also think this is a bit risky, if she can really do it, why should I stop her? A mysterious and powerful organization that could sneak into your house and stab you in the back at any time is exactly the kind of organization we need to keep people away from. Ascalon probably realized this, which is why she acted without orders.”
"Therefore, our focus should be on whether Ascalon's actions will be dangerous, not on how to find her or stop her. Kal'tsit, you know the most about Rembiton here. How dangerous is Ascalon's operation in Sigraine? What's your estimate?"
Kal'tsit glanced at Wayne; only Wayne could possibly make someone calculate the danger of an operation out of thin air. But Kal'tsit was all-knowing, and she could actually accomplish that.
“Ascalon is someone I personally recruited to join Babel. Based on the records of her past service in the Kazdel army, combined with the information about the major powers known to Sigraine, I think the risk is about 30% to 40%. It’s not a small danger, but it’s a mission that can be accomplished.”
“That’s right. So Kal’tsit, arrange for the medical and support teams to be ready to assist. We can get a good night’s sleep at the manor tonight and wait for news tomorrow.”
Wayne stretched and yawned.
"The work ahead is going to be very demanding. If you don't adjust your time difference, you might fall asleep at the mine!"
...........
Rembit, Sigraney, General Authority for Urban Traffic Safety.
A cocktail party was being held in the banquet hall of this three-story Gallo-style building. The attendees were not high-ranking officials; almost all were wealthy individuals holding sinecure positions. They clinked glasses and exchanged toasts, avoiding any political discussions, focusing instead on matters of mine development and resource investment. The highest-ranking official among them was merely a low-level clerk in the city's traffic safety bureau. If not for the location of the banquet hall, it wouldn't be inaccurate to call it a small gathering of the wealthy.
This continued until the arrival of the Letanian, who was to host the banquet. With enormous, curved horns and a loose black mage's robe, this Letanian nobleman walked to the center of the gathering, stood under the spotlight, raised his glass, and announced an important decision:
"The Joint Tribunal has sold the mining rights for the Rabbit Mine to Glasgow Minerals. They paid the full amount in one lump sum. Starting tomorrow, all companies and countries that have not obtained authorization from the company are requested to voluntarily withdraw from the Rabbit Mine."
"You paid all the fees in one go?" "You leased an entire mining area for mining?" "What country is this company from? I've never heard of it before."
A buzz of discussion immediately broke out in the audience. But soon, the chaotic topics coalesced into a single core question:
"Is there any chance we can squeeze some money out of this company?"
The Leitanian man, standing center stage, watched this scene with satisfaction. This was exactly the effect he wanted. He couldn't figure out the company's true nature, but Rembitox had plenty of useful pawns. Although stirring up one and throwing another out to alert the enemy and see what kind of snake it was, it was a piece of cake for him. Even if others wanted to investigate, they wouldn't be able to trace it back to him.
"Waiter, pour me a glass of wine."
"The Letanian called out. A young Sarkaz woman with long, fiery red hair immediately stepped forward, took a glass of red wine from her tray, and handed it to the Letanian.
"Please use it."
The Sarkaz woman said with a smile.
The Leitanian chuckled, sized up the somewhat unfamiliar waiter, and nodded.
"Not bad, when did the Urban Construction and Security Bureau hire such a beautiful servant? Want to take it a step further? I can help you, just come tonight..."
"My lord, please have a drink." The red-haired Sarkaz woman's eyes sparkled with spring. She reached out, her slender white fingers grasping the stem of the goblet, and gently fed the wine to the Letanian's mouth.
The Letanians, without hesitation, easily downed the wine offered to them. They smacked their lips.
"It's always a pleasant thing for a beautiful woman to offer you wine. I wonder if you, Miss..."
"I will make sure you are so satisfied that you can't get out of bed."
Ascalon replied with a smile. His gentle tone and trained, soft voice completely lowered the Letanian's guard. Completely oblivious to the chill in Ascalon's smile, he eagerly gave the man his hotel room number.
He felt his throat was a little dry and he was feeling a bit dizzy, probably because he had downed a large glass of wine in one go and was feeling a bit tipsy.
Even the finest wine can become poison if consumed in excess.
He thought of it subconsciously.
Chapter Ninety-One: I Am the Best News Maker
"The nobility these days are becoming less and less vigilant."
Standing in front of the sink in the restroom, Ascalon poured the poison into the water, wiped his hands, and chuckled disdainfully.
The poison takes effect in thirty minutes; after thirty minutes, the Letanian nobleman, along with everyone else in the banquet hall, will die silently. Ascalon still has great faith in the poison created by the Great Lich.
Ascalon touched the sapphire ring on her hand, a "token" given to her by the Letanian nobleman. He naively expected her to wear the ring to the hotel tonight, unaware that he might only have 30 minutes left to live, and might not even see the hotel's door. Ascalon smiled contemptuously, thought for a moment, and instead of throwing the ring away, put it in her pocket. If she had enough time, she really wanted to watch the Letanian nobleman fall before her, and then go up to offer him a final tribute.
But she had no intention of staying any longer, waiting to witness the banquet hall turn into a death zone. The people inside were just one of her targets; Ascaron had many other targets to eliminate. She entered the women's restroom, and under the cover of darkness, nimbly leaped onto the skylight, easily blending into the building that had left the Security Bureau offices, disappearing into the night.
The next target was the chairman of New Oasis Mining Company. He was the one who instigated the infected to besiege the resort and declared that they would not leave easily unless granted mining privileges. He was well-guarded and highly vigilant; ordinary methods of poisoning or seduction would likely be ineffective. Therefore, Ascalon opted for a direct ambush. Strong defenses? Kill them all. Ensuring no witnesses would qualify as an assassination. For her, this was a piece of cake. Within ten minutes, Ascalon, completely shrouded in a black cloak, withdrew from the corpse-strewn streets. At the scene, she left behind the ring she had given to the nobleman from Letania.
It was a clumsy trick, but Ascalon didn't care. After all, there was no way to prove it, and this little frame-up was just something he did on a whim.
Of course, before leaving, she didn't forget to take a crossbow engraved with magical runes that the chairman of Oasis Mining used for self-defense.
The next target was a former Colombian capitalist, too young to join parliament, but possessing considerable political background and intelligence, thus earning him the reputation of a "non-participating member of parliament." When Ascalon set his sights on him, he was sitting in the back of a convertible with his girlfriend, a radiant smile on his face. While the collapse of Colombia had dashed his political ambitions to become a member of parliament and compete for the presidency, in the lawless land of Rembiton, he had begun a second spring in his life. Especially recently, he was brimming with self-satisfaction; Rembiton's abundant infected resources had sparked his ambition to inherit Colombia's legacy. He was currently offering high salaries and recruiting scientists on a large scale, planning to restart the previously suspended Loken tank-type human experiments. A major reason for the recent infected uprising was his collusion with several large merchants to sell off Originium mines in order to secure sufficient [primaries], causing many small mines to plummet in profits and be forced to close, resulting in massive unemployment among infected workers. And for those infected who couldn't survive and were forced to participate in the experiments, the capitalist euphemistically called it "voluntary participation."
To deal with him, Ascalon used her anti-materiel sniper rifle. She had captured it from a Papal Guard soldier during a battle against the Lateran Crusaders. This product of a previous civilization was not easily damaged, and the bullets used were not difficult to replicate, but its power was exceptional. Even at a distance of ten kilometers, this sniper rifle, which clearly exceeded the technological limits of Terra, could easily tear the head off a fully armed Kazimierz knight from his neck.
Ascalon chose a high vantage point, a type of structure not hard to find in Rembiton, and the capitalist clearly had no suspicion whatsoever. At the moment he pulled the trigger, Ascalon could still see the man's radiant smile through the scope.
Even after pulling the trigger, Ascalon's skillful technique allowed him to leave half of his face intact, hoping that smile would heal the stunned woman beside him.
Ascalon blew away the Originium dust from the muzzle of the gun. He skillfully disassembled the weapon and put it into his briefcase. While listening to the screams and wails coming from the direction of the street, he calmly walked down the rooftop, took the elevator to the restaurant on the first floor, and ordered himself a Rembitox-style fried and grilled Originium bug dish.
She glanced at her watch. The ambush had taken over an hour, with most of the time spent selecting sniping positions and waiting for the target; the actual sniping itself had only taken about three minutes. Even so, it was still very early before dawn.
"It's much easier than I expected. Should I take out a couple more?"
Ascalon sighed, raised his hand, and said to the busy owner, Perot, in the kitchen:
"Boss, forget it, we'll dine in."
"Okay!" Boss Pero poked his head out from the kitchen, grinning with a tired smile, and replied, "Speaking of which, it's the middle of the night, and it's quite lively outside."
"It looks like someone was murdered on the street," Ascalon yawned, replying calmly. "I wonder who did it. How despicable, not letting people get a good night's sleep so late."
The boss came out of the kitchen carrying a plate of crispy fried Originium bugs coated in flour. He ladled a bowl of rice for Ascaron and placed it in front of her. A look of fear crossed his face as he said, "Yeah. How inconsiderate. Did you just get off work? It's so late. A girl shouldn't be wandering around outside alone like this. Things haven't been peaceful in Sigraine lately."
Ascaron forked a source stone bug, put it in his mouth, and bit into it under the shopkeeper's smiling gaze, his eyes narrowing slightly. But he quickly regained his composure and said:
"I haven't gotten off work yet."
The shop owner watched Ascalon eat the Originium Bug, a barely perceptible gleam of joy on his face. He had added something to the fried and grilled Originium Bugs; anyone who ate them would be unconscious within five minutes. He glanced up and down at Ascalon's slender figure, but fearing his gaze might be too blatant and make her wary, he quickly looked away and casually changed the subject, saying, "Do you work upstairs? This is the first time I've seen you."
Ascalon smiled and shook his head, raised his hand, took out the crossbow he had swiped, placed it in front of the shopkeeper, and said with a smile, "Is it possible that I am the assassin?"
The boss's face stiffened. Just as he was about to speak, a hidden blade shot from Ascalon's right wrist and pierced the boss's neck in the blink of an eye. Ascalon, experienced as ever, dodged backward, avoiding the spurting blood. He wiped the blade with a napkin from the table, pushed the spell-inscribed crossbow towards the boss, and said:
"I've paid for the meal, keep the change."
After saying that, he picked up his suitcase and turned to leave.
The next day, it became the top headline news in the Rembitt Daily.
