"This invincible legion will annihilate all beast tides and protect the territory forever."
"For an ordinary person, such a far-fetched idea would just remain a thought. But Marquis Carmen is a genius, a nobleman who possesses vast resources and has countless admirers."
Masumi couldn't help but interject, "He succeeded?"
"That's right, during an unprecedented beast tide, that invincible legion appeared and repelled the terrible enemy."
Jack's expression was grave. "Unfortunately, the victory in the war did not bring jubilation to the people; instead, it plunged them into even deeper fear."
"Is there something wrong with that legion?"
"Marquis Carmen made a deal with the devil!"
Section 141, Chapter 140: The Undead Legion
Did you make a deal with the devil?
Masumi had read some religious books, and when she thought about the descriptions of demons in them, she immediately had a bad feeling.
Sure enough, Jack said, "Creating an invincible army is no easy task. Even Marquis Carmen hit a bottleneck after a period of time."
"After years of fruitless efforts, the Marquis of Carmen began to hallucinate, always saying that he heard the voice of the devil."
Jack paused for a moment. "I don't believe in demons or anything like that. But judging from Marquis Carmen's subsequent actions, it seems that only this explanation can fit the bill."
"After repeated failures, he finally succumbed to the temptation of the devil. In order to obtain forbidden knowledge, Carmen sacrificed his wife and children as offerings."
"I don't know what Marquis Carmen got from the devil back then, but he had clearly lost all humanity."
Jack hesitated for a moment, wondering whether he should continue. He glanced at the little girl in the rearview mirror and saw that Bubble was listening intently and didn't seem scared at all.
"The Marquis of Carmen summoned all the slaves and a large number of able-bodied men in his territory, under the pretext of building a defense system to deal with the beast tide."
"He certainly wasn't after any defense system; Marquis Carmen was after the lives of those innocent people."
"Marquis Carmen used evil means to create a terrible undead army. On the day the beast tide broke out, countless skeletons poured out of his territory."
"They destroyed everything in their path: chaotic creatures, human armies, unarmed civilians..."
"Alright!" Masumi interrupted Jack, feeling very suppressed.
"Let's not talk about that villain anymore. I'm really wondering why we would travel to such a terrible place?"
Masumi frowned, her eyes fixed on Jack.
Why did you go to Carmen? That's a very pertinent question.
If he had a choice, Jack would never take his fiancée and Bubble to a place like that; a sunny beach would be his first choice.
Unfortunately, I had a mission to complete!
That's right, the ten-day holiday was a complete lie to Masumi.
The truth is that Jack has been extremely busy lately and hasn't had a moment to spare.
It wasn't that the people weren't willing to help, but rather that Jack had never been exposed to the mystical world before and was a complete novice. Even with the strong support of his friends, he often felt powerless to do what he was supposed to do.
Jack was busy, but he didn't forget why he was busy.
If you neglect your fiancée because of work, isn't that putting the cart before the horse?
In addition, Jack had promised to take Masumi on a trip a long time ago, and after much deliberation, Jack decided to take a risky approach.
Since I can't ask for leave, I'll just have to make an official trip.
Find places that require investigation, have low risk, are preferably some distance from the federal government, and can serve as travel destinations.
After some searching, Jack actually found two 'suitable' places.
One is a public ruin in the Kingdom of Sein. I don't know where the Seven Ring Tower got the information, but it is certain that there is a hidden layer in that ruin that has not been explored.
The other place is Carmen.
'Searching for the lost undead army? That's a joke, hahaha!'
At the time, Jack thought Carmen was a nice place.
However, unaware of her fiancé's predicament, Masumi had strong opinions about the trip.
"Let's go somewhere else. Carmen Town isn't a good place," Masumi advised.
Change locations? Of course not.
What are you worried about?
Jack said casually, "That's all ancient history, things from hundreds of years ago!"
"Moreover, as a selling point, Carmen Town must have embellished this legend."
"But......"
"Don't worry, think about it, these days there are haunted houses and other haunted places that charge admission!"
"Carmen Town is just using the old almanac as a selling point to attract tourists."
"I bet it was just an ordinary town originally. The whole thing about it being the former territory of the Marquis of Carmen is just a gimmick!"
"Well, that makes sense." Masumi's tone wavered.
Seeing that Masumi's tone softened, Jack pressed on: "It would be a waste to take such a rare opportunity to travel domestically. There aren't many options when it comes to going abroad."
“We can’t go to places that are in turmoil, we can’t go to countries that are hostile to the Federation, and we still can’t go to backward and impoverished places.”
"Carmen Town is nice. Regardless of whether it's true or not, it has a rich history. And while the standard of living there may not be comparable to the Federation, at least it has modern amenities like washing machines, and it's safe!"
"As a famous tourist destination, I checked and there haven't been any negative news about it in recent years."
After saying so much in one breath, seeing that Masumi had calmed down, Jack asked in return, "Why doesn't Masumi want to go to Sien? It's a country with which the Federation has diplomatic relations. You haven't even seen the ruins yet, have you?"
"How can we go to Sien?"
Masumi frowned: "What if something dangerous happens in such a barbaric place?"
"Uh"
Jack was surprised that Masumi disliked Sain so much; he remembered that she wasn't like this before.
Although he didn't quite agree with what she said, Jack nodded and didn't say anything more.
"We have plenty of time. Apart from the three days for travel, we can fully enjoy the exotic scenery."
Jack said confidently, "Trust me, this is going to be a wonderful trip."
..............................................................
"Welcome! How many of you are there?"
“The three of you, I have a reservation. My name is Jack, and I just arrived from the Federation.” Jack took out his identification.
"Yes, yes, I remember now, it's Mr. Jack."
The moment the Federal signboard lit up, the hotel owner became incredibly enthusiastic.
"The rooms have been prepared. Please follow me."
Masumi looked around the inn. It seemed to have been recently renovated and didn't look old at all.
Wallpaper, chandeliers, stair railings...
"Not a bad place." Masumi observed for a while and was quite satisfied.
"Hehe, business has been good these past few years, so I hired a designer to do a major renovation here."
The hotel owner's face glowed with pride. "As long as the guests from the Federation are satisfied, that's all that matters."
"A very nice hotel, are there really any guests who are not satisfied?"
Jack walked into his room, patted the brand-new sheets, and asked somewhat strangely.
"Oh, please don't mention it, sir."
The owner looked indignant. "Last time I hosted a few people from Sene, probably some minor nobles. They were always complaining about this and that, and even had their rooms renovated by their servants. They never ate the food provided by our restaurant. Can you believe it?"
“That’s how all the Sien people are,” Jack shrugged.
"Exactly! Coming to Carmen and not eating the local specialties, insisting on eating the bread and sausages they brought themselves, isn't that crazy?"
"People from different places have their own habits. You may not like your boss, but it's wrong of you to speak ill of him behind his back."
A cold voice rang out, and the boss hurriedly turned around. It turned out to be a tall young man passing by the door.
The young man seemed quite displeased after hearing what the boss said. He stopped and stood at the door, looking down at Bubble and his group.
"Uh," the boss said awkwardly, not for any other reason than that the tall, blond, blue-eyed man was clearly a Sien.
Section 142, Chapter 141: Enemies Meet Again
“Uh, sir, I didn’t mean it.”
The innkeeper was clearly not a quick-witted person; after being caught red-handed by the tall man, he stammered out this sentence after a long while.
“I don’t care whether you did it intentionally or unintentionally, remember this! If you were in Sain, you would be punished by having your tongue pulled out just for slandering nobles behind their backs.”
The tall young man calmly said this and was about to leave when Masumi angrily said, "What kind of person is he? He's incredibly arrogant."
To be fair, the hotel owner was at fault first, so it's no big deal that he said a few words to him.
Masumi already harbored considerable resentment towards Sain, and when this guy uttered such outrageous words as the punishment of having one's tongue pulled out, Masumi was immediately enraged.
"Federal?"
The young man sized up Masumi and revealed an arrogant expression.
"A 'great power' that only knows how to play both sides actually has people like you?"
Seeing his fiancée's face flushed with anger, Jack stepped forward and shielded her behind him. "Sir, your words are blatantly provoking relations between our two countries."
"Oh? So what?"
"..."
