Unfortunately, he hadn't read the comic, so he naturally didn't know why the man was talking about his own affairs.
“In all of Wonder Woman’s comics, there’s basically one person you can’t avoid.” The man patted Steve on the shoulder. “That person’s name is Steve Trevor. In many comics, he’s Wonder Woman Diana’s husband or lover. This explains quite a bit why that god went easy on our Captain America.”
"He held back?" This sentence was a huge shock to Steve. Were all those attacks just a show of holding back?
As someone who suffered Diana's attacks, Thor has every right to speak on this matter.
"Otherwise what? Do you think you can survive with your barely-there little body? If she had used a little more force with that leg, you would have been split apart, okay?" Thor made a rather vivid gesture of splitting apart.
Steve didn't say anything. The whip kick Diana delivered still left a bruise on his abdomen. It wasn't a matter of his own recovery ability anymore; it was simply due to the sheer destructive force.
"So what are you trying to say?" Pierce looked at the man, knowing that this man wasn't speaking without reason and must have some plan that required Steve's cooperation.
"Why don't we let our captain make contact with this god?" the man said with a smile. "Someone who shares the same name as his former lover, and even bears a resemblance to her. Surely, this god wouldn't be able to refuse."
Hearing this, Thor was shocked by the human's audacity. This was absolutely treating a goddess like a fool.
Even Hill couldn't help but cover his forehead; this plan was truly absurd.
Pierce nodded, after all, there was no harm in trying. Even if Steve died, it wouldn't be a bad thing for him.
“Then let’s give it a try.” Pierce nodded.
Thor pursed his lips and left the meeting.
Steve was completely bewildered, and he hadn't forgotten that he owed the girl a dance.
"Secretary-General, I can't do it."
Pierce responded to Steve's self-doubt with a smile: "Believe in yourself, you can do it. You're an idol to many people."
After saying that, the secretary-general left the meeting room.
The man who proposed the plan patted Steve on the shoulder: "She's just a woman. I believe in you, Captain."
They then left the meeting room as well.
Only a bewildered Steve Rogers remained.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Operation codename: 443, commence.
Chapter 88: Choosing a Teacher and the Accident
Diana didn't know what S.H.I.E.L.D. was planning, and even if she did, she probably wouldn't care.
Can just anyone fall for this kind of trick?
Diana had encountered similar situations throughout her long life. Besides, even her teammates from the previous world, to be fair, were all handsome men, more or less.
To think that just anyone could succeed? That would be a gross underestimation of Diana.
While S.H.I.E.L.D. began training its soldiers as agents, Diana was already fast asleep. A good night's sleep was the most important thing for Diana.
The next day, Diana arrived at the Insightful's base early.
“I thought I was the only one in this base who cared,” Banner said to Diana with a smile.
Diana shook her head. Lately, she and Tony hadn't been paying much attention to the construction progress of the Insight Headquarters. After all, one was busy researching his own armor, and the other had recently had an adopted daughter and son; neither of them had much time to check on the construction progress at the Insight Headquarters.
"It's been about two months now," Diana said, looking at the headquarters building that was already taking shape in the distance, and couldn't help but sigh.
By this time, virtually everything that could happen had already happened. The so-called storylines that Diana herself knew had long since collapsed and could never be restored to their original course.
A man wearing a helmet walked toward Diana.
“Hello, Miss Prince.” The man extended his hand to Diana.
Just as Banner was about to introduce the person in charge, he saw that Diana had already extended her hand.
“Mr. Toms,” Diana said with a smile, shaking hands with Toms.
"I thought you guys didn't know each other." Banner was clearly embarrassed, and even unconsciously scratched his head.
“I’ve known Mr. Tooms for quite a while now. Back when I lived in Brooklyn, I troubled him quite a bit with house repairs,” Diana said to Banner. “It’s also my fault for forgetting to introduce you to Mr. Tooms.”
Banner shrugged, indicating that he understood.
"Haha, it doesn't matter whether it's there or not. At least I get along quite well with this Mr. Banner, and sometimes our thoughts coincide." Toms was quite used to this kind of question; in this kind of place, many people actually have unclear connections.
“Thank you very much, Miss Prince. To be honest, I never thought I would be in charge of such a big project one day.” Toms really never thought he would be able to take on the construction of the Insight Tower.
In the past, he could only get some scraps from the New York City government, nothing compared to this huge pie now.
Of course, Toms was well aware of the importance of this project. Not to mention that Tony Stark was a man whose money could easily drown them, even the woman in front of him was someone who could easily strangle them.
It was Diana who recommended Tony to secure this project.
Tony was happy to give Diana this face, since he was only in charge of construction, not design. Tony wasn't worried about anyone taking kickbacks on the project; all materials were supplied directly by Stark Industries. Kickbacks?
This is also why he could entrust the security of the future headquarters to Adrian Tooms with a clear conscience; after all, it doesn't matter who gets this kind of project. Giving Diana face isn't a bad idea either.
Then, at a pre-arranged bidding meeting, Toms won the Insight's construction project among numerous construction companies as a private contractor.
There's no way around it; this kind of problem will arise at any time.
It's just that sometimes, many people do it very discreetly.
But what is the Insightful? In a sense, it is a private armed organization, except that no one in the United States dares to say that they are illegal, and outside of the United States, no one pays any attention to such a small thing.
Perhaps those intelligence organizations will take a look. But that's about it; they'll only look at it briefly, given the precedent set by S.H.I.E.L.D.
"But to be honest, this project also gives me the confidence to send my daughter to Midtown High School." Tom's smile was filled with deep paternal love; as a father, he wanted to give his daughter the best environment. And now, this project has perfectly helped him achieve more than half of his goal.
"That's wonderful news," Diana said with a smile, congratulating the man who had always considered his daughter the most important person in his life.
"Then I won't bother you any longer." Toms had only come to express his gratitude to Diana, and besides, their work was still ongoing, so they couldn't linger here for too long.
“Goodbye, Mr. Tooms,” Diana smiled and waved to Tooms.
“Alright, I’m sure you didn’t come here to check on the progress of the Insightful Headquarters.” Banner knew exactly what his two teammates were thinking. Neither of them could possibly be interested in this project.
Unless, of course, they've found some ancient ruins containing vampires. Those two might come to check it out—one for the ruins, the other for the vampires.
"Speak, what is it?" Banner said, looking at Diana.
“You should know that I have adopted two children.” Diana believed that, given Tony Stark’s personality, practically everyone he knew knew that Diana had adopted two children.
Banner nodded.
Diana was right; Tony would basically write extensively about the two adopted children whenever he came. He even declared himself their godfather, which was something Banner couldn't possibly be unaware of.
“They’re not getting enough education. I need a responsible teacher who can at least help them with the pre-high school curriculum,” Diana said quite bluntly to Banner.
"Me?" Banner chuckled self-deprecatingly. "I can't even control what's inside me. How can you entrust two children to me?"
"You don't need to worry about that. Even if Hulk comes out, he won't be able to hurt those two little guys," Diana reassured Banner.
Those two little ones, one is the future Scarlet Witch, and the other is the Speedster. How could they possibly be hurt by the Hulk, especially since their current foster mother's name is Diana?
"Then why not ask Tony?"
"Yeah, why didn't you come to me?"
As Banner raised his question, a flashy gold and red suit of armor descended from behind him.
“It seems your armor has undergone further modifications.” Diana looked at the armor, which was quite different from all her previous armors, and the chest, which had originally been made into an inverted triangle shape, had now returned to a circle.
“Mark 7, my latest masterpiece.” The armor that Tony called Mark 7 slowly opened, revealing a small mustache dressed in a suit underneath. “Now let’s continue our discussion about why you chose Banner to teach those two kids instead of me, their godfather.”
Tony crossed his arms, his face saying, "If you don't give me an explanation today, you're not leaving here, and you're not taking Banner with you."
“Tony, you’re not their godfather, okay? You called yourself that.” Diana was both amused and exasperated by Tony’s self-proclaimed godfather status.
"Really? Does a godfather have to be someone who gives a baby or toddler a religious name at baptism and guarantees to provide their religious education? Can't I be one?" Tony stroked his chin, unable to understand why these people always had so many rules.
Seeing the looks in Banner and Diana's eyes, Tony could only give in.
“Okay, then I can be their godfather. At least that's what they say in the East, isn't it?” The last sentence was addressed to Diana; after all, a Chinese teacher isn't hired for nothing. Tony is now quite fluent in Mandarin, and besides, sometimes language teachers don't just teach languages…
Teaching some humanities knowledge is also acceptable.
"Looks like you're doing quite well." Diana simply praised Tony's progress before turning to Banner, preparing to continue their conversation.
Tony could only ask Diana again, "Why didn't you come to me?"
"The two children have decided that they don't want you as their tutor."
That's the truth, but it did hurt Tony psychologically. He cared for those two kids just as much as anyone else, so why couldn't he be their tutor?
Seeing Tony's current state, Banner could only sigh and nod in agreement to Diana's request. It's just teaching two kids, how difficult could it be? He could always get another degree in education.
"I want to get an education degree!" Tony shared the same idea as Banner, except he said it outright.
"Huh?" Diana simply couldn't understand the thought process of these human geniuses. You want to get an education degree just to teach two children?
What do you expect those guys who worked so hard to get their degrees to think?
"Alright, alright. The two little ones haven't specified who their tutor will be. But, Tony, you're absolutely out of the running, okay?" Diana couldn't stand this rascal's obsession with becoming the kids' tutor. He'd already declared himself their godfather, what more did he want?
Banner looked at Tony with amusement.
Tony couldn't stand the gazes of the two of them any longer, so he could only nod in agreement with Diana.
Diana suddenly looked up at the sky, as if she had noticed something. At that very moment, a steel beam hanging from a tower crane in the distance suddenly fell down.
Just as the steel beam was about to hit someone, Diana picked it up and casually tossed it to the open space beside her.
The construction worker, who was terrified by the sudden accident, only then realized that he was not dead.
Tony also donned his armor at that moment and scanned the broken section of the crane cable from the air.
"Are you alright?" Toms rushed over and asked the frightened worker.
The worker simply shook his head, but everyone had witnessed how Diana had arrived and rescued the person in an instant.
But for them, this wasn't a problem. It didn't matter who they worked for. As long as they were paid on time, that was all that mattered.
Toms nodded gratefully to Diana: "Thank you, Miss Prince."
After all, the death of a worker is a major event. What private contractors like him fear most is a death on a project. It would severely impact the projects he can secure and his profits.
"fine."
Tony landed from the air, his visor lifted to reveal a somewhat serious face.
Seeing Tony's expression, Diana realized that this sudden event might not be so simple.
