Chapter 43 Success, but an Imperfect Memory Curse
How can a pig test the Memory Charm?
Professor Flitwick then took out a piece of parchment, showed it to the pig, and then put the parchment away and cast a forgetting spell on the pig.
“Now I’ve made it forget what it saw, and it will bark if it remembers,” Professor Flitwick explained.
“I think Professor McGonagall’s Transfiguration is more amazing.” This heartfelt remark pleased Professor McGonagall greatly. Jimmy took out his wand, pointed it at the large European white pig, and chanted, “Enlightenment!”
A beam of white light struck the large white pig, which immediately squealed loudly.
Jimmy, unsure whether this counted as a success, looked at Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick and asked uncertainly, "Is this considered a success?"
Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick were delighted.
"Of course, you succeeded! My goodness, I'm adding 50 points to Gryffindor!" Professor McGonagall added 50 points without hesitation, making Jimmy suspect that she was deliberately adding them because she had lost too many points.
“Oh, well done, that’s wonderful!” Professor Flitwick jumped up with joy, saying with a mixture of delight and regret, “You really should have come to Ravenclaw.”
"Hmm?" Professor McGonagall's sharp gaze fell upon him, and Professor Flitwick, feeling a prickling sensation in his back, immediately abandoned his dangerous idea.
Only Jimmy was still confused. "Is it really that simple? Can we really be sure just like that?"
Professor McGonagall was in a good mood. She explained to Jimmy, "That's the magic of Transfiguration! It's a life form, it has memories, which you'll learn in third grade. I assure you, your spell was a success, Jimmy."
"That's right! Now, use it on me."
Professor Flitwick forgot his earlier embarrassment and looked at Jimmy expectantly.
Jimmy hesitated, feeling that the process was somewhat frivolous. "Do we really have to do this?"
“I’m sure I’m going to do it this way. Don’t worry, the Experimental Spells Committee tested it this way too, I remember it clearly.”
Faced with Professor Flitwick's persistence and Professor McGonagall's encouraging gaze, Jimmy put aside his worries, raised his wand, pointed it at Professor Flitwick, and said, "Enlightenment!"
The moment Professor Flitwick was struck by the spell, he screamed, startling both Professor Jimmy and Professor McGonagall.
"I'm fine!"
Fortunately, Professor Flitwick only called out once, otherwise Jimmy wouldn't know how to explain it to Professor McGonagall.
Professor Flitwick, who was stunned in place, closed his eyes and sensed it for a moment. Finally, he affirmed, "Yes, yes! You have succeeded, Mr. Blaine! But I think there are still some imperfections."
"What is it, Professor?" Jimmy asked eagerly.
Professor Flitwick sighed and said, "It made me recall all my memories, both good and bad, I remembered them all."
As he spoke, he turned and climbed onto a cabinet on the office wall, taking out a well-preserved box from a hidden compartment at the top of the dusty bookcase.
“It’s incredible, Mr. Blaine.” Professor Flitwick placed the box on the low table with a sad expression. “You remind me of it… I remember that it contains parts of my memories.”
Jimmy and Professor McGonagall watched quietly; they could tell that Professor Flitwick was also a man with a story.
The box was opened, and Professor Flitwick first took out a crystal bottle filled with silvery flocculent matter, followed by a note: "Years ago, I cast an Oblivion Charm on myself to forget that the box even existed. The Memory Charm awakened my memories, as well as some of the memories in the bottle. The Memory Charm can still be improved, Mr. Blaine."
Inside the box was also a moving photograph of a woman with her hair in a bun and a kind smile on her face.
Professor Flitwick took off his glasses and wiped away the tears welling up in his eyes. He put the things he had taken out back into the box. "Some memories are better left unremembered than remembered."
“Yes…” Professor McGonagall became sentimental for some reason, “But now is the time to be happy, Jimmy, come on, smile! I’ll have the house-elves prepare an even bigger feast for you tonight to celebrate.”
Professor Flitwick put his glasses back on and said with a smile, "That's right, this spell can be published in the academic journal 'Charms and Anti-Charms,' they'll definitely include it. Also, I'll write to the Experimental Spells Committee, so don't worry about the Ministry of Magic. Share this good news with your friends!"
Jimmy asked expectantly, "Does the academic journal 'Spells and Anti-Spells' pay for articles?"
Some journals pay authors for their published manuscripts; I don't know if "Spells and Counterspells" does.
“Yes, let me think…” Professor Flitwick thought for a moment, then held up one finger and said, “They’ll probably give you 100 Galleons. The Charms & Anti-Charms Publishing House always supports spell innovation! In addition, the Ministry of Magic will also give spell creators an academic award of 50 Galleons. I can help you submit your paper; if you need it, just give it to me.”
Upon hearing about the money, Jimmy immediately became excited; he seemed to have found another way to make a fortune.
The spell verification process was now complete. Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick had classes to attend later, so Jimmy returned to the Great Hall, found a piece of parchment, and began writing his paper on the Memory Charm.
The sooner it's published, the sooner you'll get paid.
The spell and its counter-spell give him 100 Galleons, the Ministry of Magic gives him 50 Galleons, and adding that to his original 367 Galleons, he has 500 Galleons!
Half of the store opening goal has been achieved; the remaining half will be earned through card games, and perhaps some more can be made from Malfoy.
We're one step closer to the day when money makes money!
Jimmy finished writing his paper, dried the ink, and checked it with satisfaction. He took the paper to Professor Flitwick's office, but Professor Flitwick was teaching a class and no one was in the office.
The paper is on the desk, and Professor Flitwick will see it when he comes back from class.
After finishing, Jimmy walked briskly towards the history of magic classroom with his hands behind his back.
When I arrived at the History of Magic classroom, it was just time for the afternoon History of Magic class.
Jimmy sat down in the spot that had been specially reserved next to the little witch and turned to look at Hermione.
Hermione hasn't been in a good mood lately. She's been reading "A History of Magic," and she's clearly reading much faster than the lessons are going on.
“Hermione, aren’t you curious if I succeeded?” Jimmy wanted to share the good news with Hermione, saying, “Professor Flitwick and Professor McGonagall tested it for me, and in a while, my research on the spell will be published in the journal *Charms and Anti-Charms*!”
He saw a moment of shock on Hermione's face, followed by a deeper depression. She stopped reading, buried her face in her arms, and cut off all contact with the outside world.
Hermione's dry congratulations came from below her elbow: "Congratulations."
It backfired; the naturally strong-willed minister didn't become strong at all!
The image of Hermione that flashed through her mind when she developed the Memory Charm changes at this moment; at least the Hermione of today is not the future Minister of Magic.
Chapter 44 A staged accident?!
During class, Hermione remained sullen, knowing it was probably due to her own behavior, so Jimmy didn't disturb her while she tried to adjust her mindset.
When the bell rang, he stood up and called out to the students behind him, "Neville, come here for a second!"
Neville, who was about to leave with the book in his arms, froze and turned back to Jimmy's side.
Hermione, realizing something as she stood up, asked, "Are you going to use that spell on Neville?"
“Yes,” Jimmy said to Neville, “Good news! My Memory Charm has been verified by Professor McGonagall and Professor Flitwick, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting things anymore!”
"Really?!" Neville's face lit up with surprise, and he couldn't wait to try it.
At this moment, Harry and Ron also gathered around; they had all heard it.
Harry said, "I can't believe you actually invented a spell?"
Seamus gaped open, then immediately began to apologize, "I'm sorry, I said before that you were crazy, you're a true genius!"
“Of course!” Jimmy hadn’t hidden this fact. He took out his wand, pointed it at Neville, and, under everyone’s tense gaze, said, “Enlightenment!”
The white light entered Neville's body, and he shuddered, his body swaying as if he were about to collapse. Ron, who was standing nearby, quickly supported him.
"How is it?" Harry was eager to know the answer.
Neville snapped out of his reverie, looking quite downcast. He nodded and said, "It was a success. I remembered a lot of things... Sorry guys, I need to be alone for a while."
Everyone was at a loss, watching Neville leave the classroom.
Fearing they might misunderstand his spell, Jimmy explained, "The Memory Charm isn't perfect yet; it makes people remember everything. Neville probably remembered something bad."
"Cool! Can you use it on me too?" Seamus and Ron were both eager to try, recalling everything—it was such a fun thing to do!
Ron said, "Maybe I can remember where I put the money I lost!"
"Hey, let's leave here first, we have flying class later." As the older students who were about to enter the History of Magic classroom entered, Jimmy suggested that they leave first and try again later.
A group of people arrived at the courtyard where flying lessons were held; Slytherin and some Gryffindor students were there.
Jimmy pointed his wand at Seamus, "Aha!"
After being hit, Seamus let out a loud cry, covered his face, and then smiled as the others tried to ask what happened, saying, "Good, very good! Great! You all have to try it. It even reminded me of when I was a baby!"
Ron, that silly boy, actually believed it and insisted on experiencing the spell before the others, shouting, "Next, it's my turn!"
"It's suddenly enlightening!"
Jimmy would never refuse something that allows him to gain experience and improve his skills.
The white light struck Ron, leaving the silly boy stunned and his expression quite interesting.
Seamus, suppressing a laugh, asked, "So, Ron, does it remind you of when you wet your pants as a kid?"
Ron realized that Seamus wanted to see him make a fool of himself, and stubbornly retorted, "I didn't!"
Upon hearing this, those around who wanted to try the memory spell immediately took a few steps back, none of them daring to try it, as no one wanted to recall their embarrassing moments.
Hermione, on the other hand, doesn't have many embarrassing moments and has a fairly strong mentality.
Seeing that the spell was indeed harmless, Hermione asked with some curiosity, "Jimmy, can I try it too?"
“Of course.” Jimmy didn’t think twice, pointing his wand at Hermione. “Aha!”
Hermione flinched, her fluffy hair flying up, and then she retreated in a panic under the watchful eyes of the male and female students watching.
Tears welled up in the little witch's eyes. She saw that there was no friendliness in the eyes of her classmates, and those eyes were all expectant, just like those of her classmates in elementary school who were waiting for her to embarrass them.
Her parents' comforting voices rang in her ears once again. Hermione longed to throw herself into their arms and cry her heart out, but they weren't there for her.
A sudden wave of loneliness and helplessness washed over her. The questioning gazes from those around her turned into sharp knives, forcing her to turn and flee into the dark castle...
Those who remained looked at each other strangely, as if accusing Jimmy of making Hermione cry.
"What...?" Jimmy tried to argue, but then he remembered that the Memory Charm's function was to recall all memories, so he shut his mouth in time.
Perhaps it really was the Memory Charm's fault; maybe it reminded Hermione of the joy of being an only child when she was away from her family for the first time?
Lavender was quite clever, or rather, she had a very high level of empathy. She placed her hands on her chest and said sympathetically, "Hermione must be homesick. If I could remember all my memories, I would definitely cry too! Waaah~ Don't use that spell on me!"
What does it mean when someone is just talking and then suddenly shouts "Don't use that spell on me" like a madman?
"I didn't mean to use it on you!" Jimmy suspected Lavender was trying to scam him. He looked at the others, and when the girls met his gaze, they looked away as if they had been burned, leaving him speechless.
Only Parvati seemed normal. She chuckled and pointed to herself, saying, "The others don't dare, so can I try?"
Now Lavender stopped hiding and watched with great interest.
"Are you sure?" Jimmy asked again to make sure, so that others wouldn't think of him as some kind of shady character. They were the ones who asked for it, and he didn't want to be smeared later.
“I’m sure, let’s get started!” Parvati nodded excitedly, signaling Jimmy to begin as soon as possible.
Jimmy waved his wand, "Aha!"
