The monkey-faced man's face turned deathly pale. Cold sweat poured from his forehead, streaming down his cheeks, mingling with the rain and dripping onto his phone screen. His hands trembled even more violently, almost unable to hold the phone.
He raised his head and looked up at the sky.
The moonlight was brilliant, and a beam of light descended from the sky, like the gaze of a god. At the edge of the beam, he could vaguely see a black dot—the B-1B bomber—circling above the clouds, like death hovering overhead.
That lord wanted him to provoke an organization that could control satellites and bombers.
This was tantamount to courting death, but the monkey-faced man had no choice. Disobeying that person's orders also meant death. And a far more gruesome death at that.
He mechanically held the phone in his hand. He released his grip, and the phone fell with a "plop" into the puddle. The screen flickered a few times and then went dark.
Then, he raised his middle finger.
Chapter 549 Provoking Kassel College
In the central control room, everyone was stunned.
Kassel College, Central Control Room.
On the enormous screen, dozens of images were displayed: satellite images, drone aerial footage, real-time recordings from street cameras, and Eva's data stream. At this moment, all the images focused on the same scene: the street in front of Mambo Internet Cafe in the town of Chizuru.
All members of the executive department stood up and gathered in front of the large screen. No one spoke, no one moved, and even their breathing was deliberately suppressed.
They witnessed the spectacular sight of moonlight piercing through the clouds, the terror of the biker gang members upon receiving the text message, and the hesitation and struggle of the monkey-faced man.
Then, they saw the middle finger.
The footage was taken from high above, from the reconnaissance equipment on the B-1B bomber. The resolution was extremely high; you could even see every expression on the monkey-faced man's face—his deathly pale complexion, the cold sweat pouring down his face, and his desperate eyes.
There's also the raised middle finger.
Arrogant, provocative, and reckless.
The control room was deathly silent.
Then, at the same moment, everyone felt that on the screen, Eva's virtual avatar, whose eyes were originally calm and deep like a pool, revealed a coldness like that of swords.
The chill was so real, so sharp, that it almost pierced the screen and went straight to everyone's heart.
"Target confirmed hostile intent." Eva's voice rang out in the control room, calm, but every word was like an icicle. "B-1B bomber, attack order issued. Target area: Chizuru Town, streets surrounding Mambo Internet Cafe. Weapon: napalm. Estimated kill radius: 300 meters."
"Wait!" Schneider, the head of the executive department, growled, his voice hoarse with excitement. "Lu Mingfei is still there! The incendiary bombs will affect him!"
“Calculation complete,” Eva replied, her voice completely flat. “The lethality modes of napalm are high temperature and asphyxiation. Commissioner Lu Mingfei is located 250 meters from the estimated epicenter, on the verge of being killed. Probability of survival: 37%.”
"37%?!" Schneider nearly slammed his fist on the table. "That's too low! Cancel the order! Cancel it immediately!"
“The order cannot be cancelled,” Eva said. “In the underlying database that even Principal Angers cannot access, Lu Mingfei’s level of protection surpasses that of everyone else in the academy. As an artificial intelligence, my highest duty is to protect him. When his life is directly threatened, I have the right to take any necessary measures, including sacrificing a portion of his chances of survival, to eliminate the threat.”
She paused, the virtual avatar's eyes looking at the monkey-faced man on the large screen: "Current threat level: extremely high. The target has made clear hostile moves. If I do not take action, the probability of Commissioner Lu Mingfei being shot and killed is 89%. In comparison, a 37% chance of survival is an acceptable price to pay."
"Nonsense!" Schneider roared. "This is murder! Eva, I order you to cancel the attack!"
“I’m sorry, Professor Schneider,” Eva said calmly, “at this level, my instructions have higher priority than yours. This is the highest principle I’ve written into my underlying code: protect Lu Mingfei at all costs.”
The control room fell into dead silence.
Everyone knows who Eva is; she is the most powerful artificial intelligence at Kassel College, the college's "brain," and the "eyes" and "ears" of the executive branch. But she is also a product of a certain project.
Only a very few people knew the specifics of the plan. But everyone vaguely sensed that there was a special connection between Eva and Lu Mingfei.
Now, they are seeing the concrete manifestation of this connection.
In order to protect Lu Mingfei, Eva did not hesitate to mobilize satellites, hack bombers, and even prepare to drop incendiary bombs on Japanese soil—which would cause international disputes, trigger diplomatic crises, and expose Kassel College to the world.
But she doesn't care.
Her primary responsibility is to protect Lu Mingfei.
She is willing to pay any price for this.
This includes putting Lu Mingfei at a 37% risk of death.
The image on the screen changed. The B-1B bomber's flight path began to adjust, shifting from level flight to a dive. The altimeter readings were rapidly decreasing: 10000 meters, 8000 meters, 5000 meters…
The bombers are moving into attack positions.
Chizuru-cho, on the street.
The monkey-faced man held up his middle finger, his arm trembling from the force. His face held no arrogance, only despair and fear. But he dared not lower his hand, for it was an order from "that person."
The bikers looked at him, then at the moonlight in the sky, at the vaguely visible bomber, and at the "five-minute countdown" text message on their phone screens.
"Captain, Captain," a boy said, his voice trembling, "we...we should retreat."
"Shut up!" the monkey-faced man roared, his voice shrill with fear. "These scare tactics are nothing! Japan is our territory! Chizuru-cho is our territory too! They wouldn't dare do that!"
He turned to look at his biker gang. The moonlight illuminated his face, pale, contorted, and drenched in sweat. He tried to hide his expression from his men, but he couldn't control it.
"Raise your guns!" the monkey-faced man continued to yell, trying to mask his fear with his volume. "They won't actually drop the bombs! This is Japan! If they dare to drop the bombs, it's an act of war! They won't!"
The biker gang hesitated.
They looked at the monkey-faced man, at his pale, contorted face, at his trembling arms. They weren't stupid; they could tell that the captain was afraid too.
But their long-standing habit of obedience made them slowly and hesitantly raise their guns.
The guns were pointed back at Caesar and Lu Mingfei.
Although my hands were shaking, my legs were weak, and my heart was about to jump out of my chest.
But they still raised their guns.
The monkey-faced man took a deep breath. He lowered his hand that had been pointing the middle finger, gripped the short-barreled shotgun tightly again, and pointed the muzzle at Lu Mingfei.
The person that official specifically requested.
He had to complete the task, or he would die a terrible death.
The monkey-faced man's finger on the trigger began to tighten.
Lu Mingfei stood in the rain, panting heavily. His physical strength was nearing its limit; the continuous use time was zero, and the fifty-fold deceleration was pushing his body to the brink of collapse. The enhancement brought by the Blood Explosion was fading, replaced by intense soreness and weakness.
But he remained standing.
He saw the artificial moon in the sky, the text messages on his phone, the monkey-faced man raising his middle finger, and the biker gang raising their guns again.
He also heard the roar of the bomber's engine in the sky, the sound of the bomb bay opening, and the alert sound of the weapon system locking.
Eva is about to make her move.
Lu Mingfei knew who Eva was and her relationship with the academy. But he never imagined that Eva would go to such lengths for him.
Mobilizing satellites and intercepting bombers, preparing to drop incendiary bombs on Japanese soil. This is no longer protection, it's madness.
Lu Mingfei looked up at the sky. The moonlight was blinding, and he squinted, trying to make out the outline of the bomber in the halo of light.
He can't see it, but he can feel it.
Death is falling from the sky.
The monkey-faced man's fingers were about to reach the bottom.
Lu Mingfei took a deep breath.
He knew what he had to do. Time Zero could be used one last time. At most three seconds, at most twenty times the deceleration. What could he do in three seconds?
Can he rush up to the monkey-faced man and take his gun? Maybe. But if he does, the other bikers will open fire. Can Caesar hold them off? Will he really be safe?
Could he escape with Caesar and Zhen in those three seconds? Perhaps. But what about Chu Zihang? Chu Zihang is still trapped in the fire, his fate unknown.
Chapter 550 Airdrop - Caesar's Exclusive
The dark clouds seemed to be torn apart by an invisible giant hand, creating a hideous rift. A tremendous roar came from the rift; it was not thunder, but some kind of heavier, more violent mechanical howl.
Then, a giant black bird descended from the sky.
A B-1B Lancer strategic bomber dove at a near-suicidal angle, its fuselage tearing through the rain and leaving a white shockwave trail in its wake. The low-flying shockwave swept across the entire street, whipping up puddles and creating walls of water as tall as a person. Vehicles along the roadside swayed violently in the airflow, their windows shattering in pieces.
Three flares shot out from under the aircraft's belly, like three blazing white meteors, streaking across the sky above the long street. They burned, emitting a blinding light that illuminated the night as if it were daytime. In the intense light, the torrential rain transformed into countless silver threads, piercing vertically from the sky to the earth.
Immediately afterwards, suitcases bearing the logo fell from the sky.
It tumbled through the air, tracing a parabola, and deployed three small white deceleration parachutes as it approached the ground. The parachutes fluttered in the wind, slowing the box's descent. The box spun and landed steadily in the middle of the long street, less than twenty meters from Caesar.
The water splashed as it was hit.
Caesar didn't hesitate. He leaped out from behind the bulldozer where he was hiding, like a cheetah pouncing, cutting through the rain and grabbing the still slightly swaying box in mid-air. His landing was as fluid as a gymnast's, the rain and mud not causing him to stumble in the slightest.
He expressionlessly opened the seal on the box. The seal was red, with white lettering: "Cassell College 2013," Cassell College Equipment Box, 2013 Version. There was also a number on the side of the box: A-07.
Eva changed the B-1B bomber's mission at the last minute. The dropped items were changed from incendiary bombs to equipment crates.
Caesar's fingers groped along the edge of the box, finding the hidden latch. He pressed it down hard, and with a "click," the lid popped open.
Inside were weapons and ammunition arranged in neat rows.
Firearms: Desert Eagle, Uzi submachine gun, MP7, Beretta.
Ammunition, of various calibers and colors, was neatly categorized and packed in waterproof foam inserts. There were flares, grenades, smoke grenades, and stun grenades. First-aid kits, night vision goggles, and tactical flashlights were also present. There were even a few energy bars and several bags of compressed biscuits.
Some bullets have red bullet tips; these are Frigga bullets, designed to knock out enemies, and are special non-lethal ammunition from Kassel College. Other bullets have black bullet tips; these are mercury-core blunt metal armor-piercing bullets designed to kill dragons, specifically targeting hybrids and Deadpool. Still other bullets have standard brass bullet tips; unassuming, but each one is deadly.
This is a mobile arsenal.
"The box fell down! He, he got it!" a biker shouted in terror, his voice trembling with fear. "The captain said! If they get that box, we're finished!"
Before they arrived, the monkey-faced man had warned his men how terrifying these three prey would be, especially when they had the box in their possession.
Caesar's gaze swept across the crate. His hand reached for the brass-tipped Magnum bullets, .0.44 caliber, high-powered rounds designed specifically for the Desert Eagle. These bullets could penetrate light body armor at close range, break bones, and create a deadly cavitation effect.
He was within the firing range of the biker gang. He was less than fifty meters away from the nearest member of the gang. At that distance, although the short-barreled shotgun wasn't very accurate, the deflection range of the buckshot bullets was enough to cover him.
But Caesar didn't care.
He loaded bullets into the Desert Eagle's magazine one by one, his movements unhurried, as if he were organizing documents in his own study. The sound of bullets entering the magazine was crisp and terrifying, "click, click," each sound like a hammer blow to the taut nerves of the biker gang.
"Boss!" Lu Mingfei poked his head out from behind the bulldozer, his face deathly pale. "These bullets can kill people! Can't we use Friga bullets?"
Caesar did not turn around. He continued loading bullets until both magazines were full, seven rounds for each Desert Eagle, fourteen rounds in total.
“Although I don’t like the old folks in my family,” Caesar began, his voice clear and calm amidst the downpour, “they once said, ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’ The world under God’s glory must be fair.”
He paused, inserted the magazine into the gun, and with a click, chambered a round.
