Caesar paused for a second, then looked up at the ceiling.
Has the god of luck struck again? How much did they go to this time? How could they make these bloodthirsty monsters abandon their prey that was almost within their grasp?
"Run! Run!"
Chu Zihang's voice exploded like thunder in his ears, and at the same time, he grabbed Caesar's shoulder and shoved him hard toward the elevator.
Caesar snapped back to reality. He had no time to think about some stroke of luck. The fire was littered with C4, ready to explode at any moment. It was far too early to kneel down and thank anyone.
The two men sprinted towards the freight elevator. As they ran, they instinctively took off their heavy trench coats and tossed them aside. Scattered firearms and ammunition remained inside, but now they were just extraneous. Lightly equipped, every second counted.
A loud noise came from behind.
"boom!"
A blast of scorching heat hit them from behind, causing them to stumble forward. One of the C4 pieces behind the screen wall had detonated. The force was immense; the entire screen wall was shattered, sending debris flying everywhere. One pound of C4 is enough to disintegrate a commercial airliner in mid-air, and in this hall, a full 15 pounds were scattered about.
The freight elevator is just ahead.
The moment the black smoke dissipated, Caesar saw that Genji had broken free of his restraints, with half of his body sticking out of the elevator door and moving inside.
Damn it, is this Japanese guy trying to run away on his own?
Without a second thought, Caesar drew his Desert Eagle from his waist, aimed at Genjiro's calf, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
"Bang!" The gunshot rang out loudly in the narrow elevator shaft.
A burst of blood erupted from Genji's calf. A steel-core bullet—this shot would have severed the calf of an ordinary person. Even with Genji's muscles and bones far superior to those of an average person, this shot was enough to cause him considerable suffering after he deactivated his Dragon Bone state.
The excruciating pain yanked Yuan Zhisheng back from his semi-conscious state. He groaned, his body jolted, and before he could react, Chu Zihang had already rushed in front of him, grabbed him by the collar, and dragged him directly into the elevator.
With a "bang," Genjiro's back slammed against the elevator wall.
Chu Zihang slammed his hand hard on the close button.
Caesar was the last to rush into the elevator, and as he did so, he punched Genji in the face. The punch was merciless; with a dull thud, it sent Genji sliding deeper into the elevator car, only stopping when he crashed into the other side wall.
Blood seeped from the corner of Yuan Zhisheng's mouth, but he didn't say anything, just leaned against the car wall and gasped for breath.
A chain reaction of explosions began.
Blinding lights blazed throughout the hall, one after another, like suns falling to earth. A blast of intense heat swept across the hall at speeds dozens of times faster than a hurricane, igniting all the remaining explosives.
The old-fashioned freight elevator made a creaking, groaning sound as the car trembled and the doors slowly closed.
With only a few centimeters left in the door crack, a gust of air, a few centimeters wide, slipped into the elevator. The compressed, high-temperature airwave, like a slender fiery serpent, swept across the car, igniting the files piled in the corner. The papers burst into flames, the firelight illuminating everyone's weary faces.
But the elevator doors eventually closed.
With a "click," the door lock engaged.
The elevator car dipped slightly and began to descend slowly, sliding into the deep elevator shaft.
A few seconds later, a deafening explosion came from above.
A bright blast of air rushed into the elevator shaft, carrying the burning corpse of Deadpool as it roared down the shaft. Mutilated limbs tumbled in the air, some still convulsing. The serpentine figure burned fiercely in the flames, its fat dissolving to gradually reveal its bronze skeleton. These savage creatures had finally met their end.
As they lay dying, they were still tearing at a blood-soaked shirt.
-----------------
The freight elevator rumbled down, the car swaying like a weary beast panting. Caesar stomped out the burning documents, then slumped wearily against the filing cabinet, casually kicking Genjiro in the face. Not too hard, not too soft.
Chu Zihang also sat down, leaning against the wall of the sedan chair. Both of them were exhausted, and their vision blurred as they ran through the fire, almost collapsing halfway through. Now, they were covered in charred soot and their clothes were stained with soot and blood, looking like ghosts who had just crawled out of purgatory.
Genjiro said nothing, helplessly wrapping the wound on his wrist with a cloth. He had severed an artery; at least a fifth of his blood had seeped into that shirt, making it as alluring to Deadpool as drugs were to an addict. As a result, he couldn't even stand up now, leaning against the carriage wall, his face as pale as paper.
He tried his best to stay sober.
He had to think. The Deadpool gang was gone, and everyone in the building was safe, but the temporary alliance between the Snake Clan and Kassel College had also ended. He, Caesar, and Chu Zihang were now back to being enemies. Caesar and Chu Zihang knew the secret of the mural hall, and such people could not be allowed to escape the Snake Clan's control. But now, Genjiro couldn't even subdue them; his own life was in their hands.
Caesar and Chu Zihang definitely want to take him away from Genji Heavy Industries. The value of the royal blood is beyond doubt, and the academy will never let go of this research opportunity.
Genjiro must do everything he can to avoid being taken away. If the head of the family is kidnapped by the academy, the Snake-Headed Eight Families will be doomed to lose this war.
There are over a hundred executive bureau officers in the building, all of them A-level elites. If we can attract their attention, we can surround Caesar and Chu Zihang—that way, we can not only preserve the secret but also capture these two dangerous enemies.
But how can a signal be sent?
Yuan Zhisheng lowered his eyes, observing the elevator's control panel without making a sound. It was an old-fashioned elevator, without an emergency call button, but there was an access panel on the top of the car, allowing him to climb up through the shaft... No, in his current state, he would fall down after three steps.
Footsteps.
The elevator stopped briefly on a certain floor. The doors didn't open, but footsteps and voices could be heard outside.
Why is the elevator here stopped?
"Go the other way, there are problems everywhere today."
The footsteps faded into the distance.
Yuan Zhisheng's heart sank. He tried to move his fingers, but his fingertips could only tremble slightly. Due to excessive blood loss, and with the removal of the Dragon Bone state, his body was weaker than an ordinary person.
"What should we do with this guy?" Caesar asked, pointing the Desert Eagle at Genjiro.
Chu Zihang glanced at Yuan Zhisheng, then lowered his eyes again: "Bringing him back to the academy is the best solution. But that's not possible right now."
"Then take him hostage?" Caesar twirled the gun in his hand. "The Serpent Clan values him highly."
“It’s not very feasible,” Chu Zihang replied. “Even if we take him hostage, the Snake Clan can let us go first and then set up ambushes along the way. With the Japanese Executive Bureau’s tracking capabilities, we won’t be able to shake them off.”
Caesar was silent for a moment, then grinned. "The best way is to shoot him dead."
He raised the muzzle of his gun and aimed it at Genjiro's forehead.
“The academy and the Snake Clan are now enemies. We can’t keep someone with his fighting strength alive. It’s time to make a move!” Caesar said, pulling back the bolt sharply. With a “click,” a bullet was chambered.
Chapter 701 Goodbye, My Friend
Caesar only wanted to scare Genjiro; loading the gun was just a subconscious action because he vaguely heard a fourth breath.
There were only three people in the elevator.
Caesar, Chu Zihang, and Yuan Zhisheng. Three breaths, clearly discernible. But he distinctly heard a fourth, extremely faint, extremely shallow, hidden somewhere, like the faint breath of a hibernating snake deep in its cave.
Caesar's finger was still on the trigger, the gun still pointed at Genji's forehead, but his attention was no longer there. He listened intently, his heart pounding, his adrenaline surging—
The side wall of the elevator car suddenly collapsed!
Before he could react, a deformed bone claw pierced through the steel plate and stabbed into Genji's ribs from behind. Blood gushed out, splattering onto the attacker's face, and the twisted face let out a piercing scream, greedily licking the blood from its lips.
Caesar froze.
Even though they had just fought their way through hordes of dead servants, and even though he had seen what those twisted creatures could look like—what he saw before him still exceeded his imagination.
This Deadpool is astonishing. It's more than twice the size of its kind! The longest I've encountered before was over five meters, and the shortest was about three meters. Their upper bodies barely maintained a human outline, tapering and lengthening from the waist down to a snake-like shape. But this one is definitely over eight meters long.
Its abdomen was extremely swollen, like a woman ten months pregnant. No, like a pregnant queen ant, its belly so swollen it was almost transparent, with something wriggling inside. It dragged its excessively deformed lower body as it crawled with difficulty, falling behind all the dead servants, and thus failed to crawl into the mural hall, becoming the sole survivor of this massacre.
At this moment, drawn by Yuan Zhisheng's blood energy, it recklessly tore the carriage apart.
Caesar saw her face clearly: a middle-aged woman. Unlike the other Dead Servants' deathly pallor, her complexion had an eerie rosy glow, like a pregnant woman who had become round and plump. He suddenly realized, and his gaze shifted downwards, landing on her snow-white, scaleless abdomen.
There were faint traces of snake tails, like a fetus restlessly turning in the womb.
This is a pregnant Deadpool.
The only thing Deadpool could give birth to during pregnancy could be something far more terrifying than himself. The dragon's blood of the fetus would be purer, closer to that ancient source. At this moment, the fetus in his womb also sensed the deliciousness of Genjiro's blood and stirred restlessly within his mother's body. Through that thin layer of skin, Caesar could see something struggling forcefully, like a demon trying to break free of its cocoon.
The long-held suspicions have been confirmed. Deadpools are capable of reproduction. Within this bloated, deformed mother's womb lies a demon. If Genji's deductions are correct, and these Deadpools are deliberately cultivated, then the mastermind behind it all may be secretly building an army of Deadpools!
Deadpool clung tightly to Genji, excitedly licking the gushing blood. Genji clung desperately to the handrail, his fingernails digging into the metal, barely managing to avoid being dragged into the elevator shaft. His massive, hundreds-of-kilograms-weight body, relying solely on Genji as a foothold, dangled precariously below the elevator shaft.
Caesar raised his lance, aimed, lowered it, and then raised it again.
He tried several times to find the right angle to fire, but he couldn't hit the target. The thing was hidden behind Genji, its entire body huddled behind the hostage, only its greedy face pressed against Genji's neck. If he fired, the bullet would first pierce Genji before hitting the Deadpool; whether it could penetrate and then hit a vital spot was even more uncertain.
Just a minute ago, he had shot Genjiro in the leg without hesitation. Now, however, he couldn't pull the trigger.
Genjiro was deathly pale from blood loss. His already somewhat androgynous face now resembled that of a dying girl, her soul slowly leaving his pale body. If he suffered another gunshot wound, he would die. Without a doubt.
Caesar suddenly realized something: a dying emperor was no different from any other dying person.
From the moment he learned that Genji was the "Emperor," this person was a dangerous monster in his eyes. Caesar could certainly shoot a dangerous monster, as effortlessly as he shot Deadpool. But he couldn't shoot a weak, dying human. And at this moment, in his eyes, Genji had become human again.
Deadpool extended its long tongue and slowly licked the back of Genji's neck. Its sharp teeth searched for the veins in the neck, preparing for the final bite. Overexcited, it began to give birth, and one after another, bluish-white, snake-like fetuses fell from beneath it, crashing into the depths of the elevator shaft with wet, muffled thuds.
Just then, a strange "clunk" sound came from above the elevator.
The car jolted violently, and the descent speed suddenly increased.
Caesar's heart sank. The elevator was already close to its maximum capacity, filled with document boxes. The weight of this giant Deadpool, plus the three of them, had completely exceeded the elevator's limits. Moreover, this old elevator was running on tracks damaged by the earthquake, the steel cables screeching and sparks flying.
They are crashing into the depths of the elevator shaft with increasing speed.
By then, Deadpool will be smashed to pieces, but the three of them will also perish with him. A freefall from a height of thirty stories—there is absolutely no chance of survival.
"Shoot!"
With his last breath, Yuan Zhisheng roared, his voice hoarse and resolute.
Caesar looked up abruptly, meeting those eyes. Genji had always given him a gloomy, unfathomable feeling, as if veiled by a layer of mist. But now, those eyes were bloodshot, almost bleeding from the corners, like the wrathful gaze of a Vajra, flames burning within them.
"Fire! Caesar, shoot!" Genji spat out a mouthful of blood, which splattered onto Caesar's face and was scalding hot.
Caesar gritted his teeth, his finger on the trigger.
Genjiro is right. Shooting might save the elevator. If the bullets sever Deadpool's spines, the brakes could stop them in mid-air. If they don't shoot, they're all dead. Any mercy shown now is nothing but womanly compassion.
But his fingers were trembling.
He was facing a living, breathing human being. A bullet piercing a person's neck—the outcome was obvious. He wasn't unfamiliar with killing; that was on the battlefield, against enemies in a life-or-death struggle. But now, his gun was pointed at an unarmed man, blood loss, unable to even stand.
At that moment, he suddenly remembered that rainy night.
They left the comic book store under umbrellas, walking in the endless downpour. He lit a lighter, and Genjiro bent down to hold his cigar to the flame, took a deep drag, and looked up, his eyes reflecting the faint light. At that moment, Caesar felt excited, as if he had made a new friend in Japan.
You can rationally judge that sacrificing one person to save everyone is worthwhile. But when you face him, can you kill him with your own hands?
Caesar was precisely the kind of person who couldn't do that. He lacked rationality, so he would rather risk rushing into the fire to save Chu Zihang, or be blown up with him, at least in that way he would preserve his pride. He would rather die together than kill someone he used to smoke with.
The trigger won't pull.
Yuan Zhisheng smiled. The smile was unexpectedly beautiful. It wasn't mockery, nor despair. The corners of his mouth turned up slightly, and his eyes relaxed, like a patch of blue sky revealed after the clouds had dispersed.
Goodbye, my friend.
