"Don't mention Fingel," Lu Mingfei took a deep breath, straightened his back, and said, "Let's go."
As they walked down the red carpet, Lu Mingfei could feel his heart pounding.
The waiter checked their invitations and respectfully led them into the hall.
In the hall, elegantly dressed guests chatted in twos and threes.
Lu Mingfei's gaze swept across the crowd. Some people had a special aura about them, and he felt the same way he did when he saw his classmates from Kassel College.
“They are hybrids,” Frilian whispered in his ear. “Right now, there are at least a hundred hybrids here.”
Lu Mingfei swallowed hard. Hmm? He made eye contact with a long-legged woman dressed in Western Region attire.
She stood at the other end of the hall, looking at him with a half-smile.
“Don’t stare at him,” Frilian squeezed his hand, “Don’t forget your persona.”
Lu Mingfei quickly looked away and accepted the champagne offered by the waiter.
He asked Frilian in a low voice, "Is that long-legged woman a mixed-race person?"
Frillie glanced at it quickly while fixing her hair: "Yes, the bloodline purity is not low."
"Ding!" The auction house bell rang. "Ladies and gentlemen, the auction is about to begin. Please take your seats."
Lu Mingfei glanced at Angers, who was sitting in a prominent position in the front row. The principal was chatting and laughing with the lady next to him, acting like a playboy.
“Sit down,” Frilian said softly.
Lu Mingfei nodded and followed her to his seat.
Chapter 62 The Dragons' Carnival (Part 1)
The lights gradually dimmed, and Lu Mingfei shifted uncomfortably.
He roughly estimated that there were at least two hundred people in the opera house, and every seat was taken.
"Ladies and gentlemen," a white-haired man in a tuxedo walked onto the stage, "Welcome to the Sotheby's Special Auction. I am your host for tonight. Please take your numbered paddles."
Lu Mingfei and Frilian were holding number plates with the number 17 written on them.
The host introduced the appetizers before the official auction: medieval oil paintings, Renaissance sculptures, and some antiques that Lu Mingfei had never even heard of.
"Before the formal auction begins," the host smiled, "as is customary, we will first hold a small ceremony."
Lu Mingfei's heart skipped a beat. What ceremony? Are there any special rules for the auction?
"Close your eyes when it gets dark."
What the heck? Is this some kind of Werewolf or murder mystery game? Lu Mingfei glanced around and saw that everyone in the room, including Principal Angers sitting in the front row, had their eyes closed.
"Mingfei, close your eyes," came Angers' reminder through the earpiece.
He quickly closed his eyes, but curiosity ultimately prevailed.
Lu Mingfei slightly lifted his eyelids, peering through his eyelashes to observe his surroundings. In the dimly lit auction hall, hundreds of people sat silently with their eyes closed, the scene so eerie that it sent chills down his spine.
"Now, it's dawn, please open your eyes!"
Lu Mingfei opened his eyes, and then...
"My God!" he almost blurted out, but he swallowed the exclamation back down.
Inside the opera house, hundreds of golden eyes lit up simultaneously, like torches lit in the darkness.
Lu Mingfei knew that mixed-race people had golden eyes, but the sight of hundreds of pairs appearing simultaneously was still too shocking. The flowing gold in the pupils formed a golden sea within the dimly lit opera house.
“Don’t be too surprised,” Ang said with a smile. “Everyone who comes to this auction is a hybrid. They have gathered here from all over the world to participate in the ‘Dragon’s Carnival’.”
“Uh,” Angers paused, “Frilian, what’s this?”
In a sea of gold, only Frilian's eyes shone with an emerald green light.
If Lu Mingfei were to describe it, it would be like a little green man mixed in with a group of yellow men, standing out as much as it could possibly be.
Someone gently tapped Lu Mingfei on the shoulder. He turned his head and saw a young Chinese man standing in the aisle next to his seat.
He was in his early twenties, wearing a well-tailored blue suit, and had a pair of golden eyes.
"Excuse me, could you move aside? My seat is inside."
Lu Mingfei quickly stood up to make way, and the man sat down next to Frillie.
"Thank you," he said with a smile, extending his hand to Lu Mingfei. "My name is Tang Sen, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Lu Mingfei shook hands. "Lu Mingfei," he said, pointing to Frilian, "this is my cousin, Frilian."
"Hello," Frilian said.
"Wow," Tang Sen made no attempt to hide his surprise, "That's really unique. Would you mind telling me what brand your colored contacts are?"
"It's natural, not from colored contact lenses."
Tang Sen raised an eyebrow. "Ha, Miss Fu's lame joke is quite good. Mr. Lu, you don't even use the Golden Eye? Very low-key."
Lu Mingfei chuckled dryly. He wasn't being low-key at all; he simply hadn't learned how to control his Golden Eyes properly yet!
Leon added background information in the headphones: "Tang Sen comes from a mixed-race family in Southeast Asia. The Tang Corporation has a lot of influence in Southeast Asia. Be careful and don't give yourself away."
“This is our first time participating,” Lu Mingfei tried to make his voice sound natural, “and we’re not quite sure about the rules of the auction yet.”
Tang Sen smiled understandingly: "Relax, there are no special rules. However..."
He lowered his voice, "Which family are you from? I don't think I've seen you before."
Lu Mingfei racked his brains for a reply, and Frilian spoke up: "Our family is rather low-key. My cousin and I came here because we heard there were some special collectibles."
Tang Sen nodded: "I understand. Some families like to keep a secret."
The auctioneer on the stage began to introduce the first item up for auction: a statue from ancient Greece.
Tang Sen's attention temporarily shifted to the stage, and Lu Mingfei breathed a sigh of relief.
“Lu Mingfei, Frilian,” Angers said, “this is the principal’s special lecture time. Kassel College is not the only place in the world where hybrid organizations gather.”
Lu Mingfei nodded slightly to indicate that he had heard, while pretending to be very interested in the auction items.
“In Europe there is the Knights Templar, in Russia there is the Praetorian Guard, in Japan there are the Eight Families of the Snake Clan, and in the Middle East there are several ancient families,” Angers listed as if reciting a familiar story, “like the Tangsen family, a mixed-race family from Southeast Asia.”
Lu Mingfei silently noted down this information in his mind. He had always thought that Kassel College was the stronghold of mixed-race people, but he did not expect that there were so many organizations outside.
“What do you think is the biggest quirk of dragons?” Angers asked.
Lu Mingfei thought for a moment, "Rob the princess?"
A soft laugh came through the headphones.
Frilian: "Treasure. Dragons have an almost obsessive pursuit of wealth. According to Norse mythology and legends from various places, their collection of gold and silver treasures goes beyond practical needs and is more like an obsession."
“Yes,” Angers was pleased that Frilian had listened attentively to his lesson. “Half-bloods also inherited this habit; they like to collect valuable items.”
Lu Mingfei suddenly realized. No wonder Angers wanted them to pretend to be art collectors; it couldn't be more appropriate for this occasion.
Tang Sen turned his head: "What do you think of this ancient Greek statue?"
Lu Mingfei: "Uh, I just think it's old."
Tang Sen laughed, his golden eyes gleaming: "Honesty! I like it. Most people come here to show off how knowledgeable they are, actually."
He lowered his voice, "This statue just came out of the workshop last week."
Lu Mingfei's eyes widened: "A fake?"
"Shh," Tang Sen gestured for silence. "Don't use that word here. The existence of some 'fakes' is the result of a tacit understanding among all parties, filtering out discerning customers."
Lu Mingfei nodded, seemingly understanding.
The auction continued, with various antiques and artworks selling for astonishing prices.
Frillie nudged Lu Mingfei. "Someone is watching us."
Lu Mingfei cautiously looked around and, sure enough, noticed several pairs of eyes lingering briefly in their direction.
Especially the long-legged woman from the Western Regions, who was sitting in the opposite private room, waving at Lu Mingfei.
“Don’t be nervous,” Tang Sen interjected. “Newcomers always attract some attention.”
Lu Mingfei smiled and said, "We're just here to watch the fun; we didn't mean to attract attention."
“In situations like this, sometimes it’s not that you’re looking for trouble, but that trouble is looking for you,” Tang Sen said, pointing to the auction stage. “Look, the main event is about to begin.”
The host cleared his throat. "Ladies and gentlemen, the next item to be auctioned is a Song Dynasty celadon lotus pond moonlight ewer with a hook, starting at $200 million."
Chapter 63 The Dragons' Carnival (Part 2)
Lu Mingfei adjusted the position of the headphones to make sure they were securely fastened in his ears. Next to him, Frilian was poking at a piece of cantaloupe with a small silver fork.
"The thirteenth lot, a Song Dynasty celadon lotus pond moonlight ewer, has a starting price of two million US dollars."
Lu Mingfei squinted at the celadon teapot on the display stand.
Slender as a young girl's waist, its color is bluish-green. A small lotus pond is carved on the body of the teapot, with lotus leaves unfurled, lotus flowers in bud, and a dragonfly perched on the spout, all lifelike.
"So beautiful," he muttered to himself.
Frillie stuffed a cantaloupe into her mouth and mumbled, "There are no more than two surviving examples of the Northern Song Dynasty Ru ware variant."
"210 million!" an Asian businessman wearing gold-rimmed glasses shouted from the audience.
"220 million!" someone immediately followed suit.
"250 million!" The third bidder immediately raised the price.
The price skyrocketed, quickly surpassing $500 million.
Several buyers in the VIP area frequently raised their paddles, while bidders in the regular seats gradually withdrew from the auction.
"Wow, they're really rich. Hey, what's the principal doing?" Lu Mingfei glanced at the front row.
Angers had his arm around the waist of a noblewoman in a red dress, whispering something in her ear, which made her giggle softly, covering her mouth. He had just bought a Roman-era gold mask for one million dollars.
Frillie said expressionlessly, "Fingal said that the principal was a dashing playboy in his youth and had dated at least a dozen girlfriends."
"Two digits?" Lu Mingfei's eyes widened. "Wait, did Fingel say that? Frilian, don't be fooled by him, he just likes to talk nonsense."
