Ever since Orochimaru became Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi had been considering candidates for the next Hokage. Initially, he wanted to groom his eldest son, Midori, who was so outstanding and perfect that he not only inherited his five attributes but also grew up to be qualified to be Hokage.
However, with Minato's growth over the years, he not only mastered the Second Hokage's Flying Thunder God Technique but also developed a new A-rank ninjutsu without hand seals, his talent was off the charts. Furthermore, he loved the village, was handsome, intelligent, calm, kind, and cheerful—his only flaw was that he had no flaws! This guy was clearly a candidate created by God for the next Hokage!
Most importantly, he helped him keep Kushina, that fiery little devil, in check. She's also incredibly understanding; she can tell what he's thinking with just a glance. Thinking about this, his son doesn't matter anymore. Being Hokage is tough enough, but there aren't any good opportunities for him to build his reputation right now. So, Hiruzen Sarutobi is letting him accumulate merit first; there will be plenty of time to build fame later.
"Lord Hokage, I just ran into Kakashi. I'd like to request permission to take them out of the village to see some blood," Minato said.
"...What do you think of this Uchiha Obito?" Hiruzen Sarutobi asked instead of answering.
"...He is indeed lacking in strength, but I think Shanks-sensei's approach was correct. Kakashi did not abandon Obito Uchiha and agreed to leave the village with me, which is a good start," Minato said after recalling for a while.
"Hehe, you're quite tactful. It's not as simple as Obito Uchiha having some shortcomings. I was originally planning to wait a few years before having you mentor Kakashi. This time, you can guide these two and get to know each other better," Hiruzen Sarutobi chuckled.
Although Minato and Shanks are not in a formal teacher-student relationship, Minato is similar to Shanks in that he always chooses to say nice things, and he is not as straightforward as Shanks. If someone is weak, he is weak, but he has to say something euphemistically that he is lacking.
"...Lord Hokage, is it necessary to make Kakashi see blood?" Minato hesitated for a moment before finally speaking up. In his opinion, Kakashi's thinking was very mature, completely in the mindset of a ninja. It would be good for him to be exposed to these things sooner rather than later. As for Obito Uchiha... he could just cheer him on from the sidelines.
"...You decide. In a few years, you'll be their team leader too." Hiruzen Sarutobi, with a headache, left the decision to Minato. The Hatake and Nara clans were originally the families he trusted the most, but the current Hatake clan heir had gone astray because of his father's incident, causing him a great deal of trouble.
225. Obito was responsible for providing support.
As Minato exited the Hokage Building, he saw Kakashi and Obito staring at him with gleaming eyes.
"You guys go back first, we'll meet at the village entrance tomorrow! Remember to prepare your things." Minato said to them with a smile.
"Oh! Yeah! I'll go get ready right away!" After saying that, Obito ran towards the Uchiha clan's territory.
"...Thank you for your help, Minato-nii." Kakashi greeted Minato politely, though his tone remained as cold as ever.
"Haha! It's alright, I haven't been out in a long time either, so I'll just take this opportunity to relax!" Minato laughed.
"...Then I'll head back too." Kakashi said and left. Minato watched Kakashi's small figure and shook his head with a smile. This future disciple is going to be very difficult to manage, much more difficult than the Uchiha one.
The next day, Brother Obito was unusually early, or rather, he arrived quite early! He appeared at the village entrance before dawn. The two gatekeepers at the village entrance were taken aback when they saw a little kid carrying a bundle bigger than himself coming to the village entrance.
"Little friend, where are you going? You can't go without an adult!" said a doorman.
"Ah! I'm Uchiha Obito, a genin from Konoha. I'm waiting here for our team leader." Obito put down his bundle, revealing his ninja headband beneath his goggles. His notes weren't for nothing; first and foremost, he needed to learn not to be too arrogant, to be low-key.
"Oh! The Uchiha clan has produced a ninja like Kakashi? That's amazing." Another "doorman" exclaimed in amazement as he looked at Obito's headband.
"Haha! Not at all! Just so-so!" Obito always kept in mind to keep a low profile, but little did he know that his current arrogance was even more over-the-top than usual, especially with the added bonus of the Uchiha clan. The two "gatekeepers" twitched their eyebrows.
The two doormen exchanged a knowing glance: "Is this kid showing off?"
"They might be mocking us for being so big and still guarding the gate!"
"Damn, the Uchiha clan is too arrogant! They're just a kid."
"But she really is a ninja..."
"Damn it, ignore him, let's go back to sleep."
After exchanging glances, the two doormen ignored Obito, who had unwittingly shown off, returned to the guard room, closed the door, turned off the lights, and continued what they had been doing.
At 4:30 a.m. in October, a cold wind still occasionally blew through Konoha, chilling to the bone. Obito regretted coming so early, and the two "gatekeepers" didn't seem to like him. After exchanging only a few words, they ran into the duty room to sleep.
Brother Obito found a corner at the village entrance and stopped, using his huge bundle to block the wind.
At eight o'clock in the morning, when Kakashi and Minato arrived at the village entrance, they saw Obito, who had dark circles under his eyes, carrying a huge bundle on his back.
"Obito, we're on a mission, not a trip, so you can't bring these bags," Minato said with a smile to Obito.
"Why! I prepared this all night! Please take it!" Obito pleaded with Minato.
"...You didn't stay up all night preparing all this, did you?" Kaka looked at Obito's dark circles with dead fish eyes.
"Of course! I've never left the village before, so of course I have to be prepared! Look at these, my grandma made these herself. They're enough for us to eat for a month! And three tents..." Brother Daitu introduced the things he brought one by one.
“Obito, carrying so much will be tiring, and we still have a long way to go. Besides... these bento boxes won't be edible after three days, right…” Minato broke out in a cold sweat. He regretted bringing this kid along. He thought Kakashi would be more difficult to deal with than Obito, but now it seemed the opposite was true.
"Really can't we bring it?" Obito asked, his eyes filled with disappointment.
"...You always do such useless things. We still have a long way to go. Aren't you tired of carrying all this stuff?" Kadian said, somewhat annoyed.
"What useless stuff! I stayed up all night for these things and came out early this morning to wait for you guys!" Obito immediately retorted. He never backed down when facing a rival in love, and even if he was wrong, he would pretend to be right.
"Alright, alright, let Obito take him if he wants. We need to hurry on our way," Minato said quickly, seeing the two boys' anger rising.
"...Hmph! Take it yourself if you want. Minato-nii, let's go." Kaden said and walked out of the village.
"Let's go too." Minato smiled and patted Obito on the shoulder, not intending to help Obito carry the bag, but rather to give him a chance to remember it.
As the three left the village, they kept running forward, with Obito at the back carrying a huge bundle and getting more and more tired.
Brother Obito glanced at the two people in front of him, gritted his teeth, put down the large bundle, and continued on his way.
After traveling all day, the three of them stopped to rest in a cave as darkness fell.
"Brother Minato, what is our mission?" Kakashi asked Minato after resting for a while.
"Yeah, Minato-nii, is our mission Rank A? Is it to assassinate someone?" Obito was already exhausted. He was a weakling to begin with, and even though Minato and Kakashi deliberately slowed down for him, he was still so tired that he almost collapsed when they arrived at the cave. However, when he heard Kakashi ask about the mission, he was full of energy again.
"Haha! This time our mission is to eliminate a group of bandits on the border of the Land of Fire. And I won't be lifting a finger this time. Consider this a test for you. They are all ordinary people, but they are all adults who kill without hesitation. Be careful." Minato tossed the mission scroll to Cardcaptor.
"Is it just... just Kakashi and me?" Luckily, Obito wasn't too hot-blooded and still knew to be afraid.
Killing someone is unrealistic for a five-year-old child, but it's different for a ninja. Although Kakashi is a bit young, it's something every ninja has to go through.
Minato believed that Kakashi's mental fortitude was fine. As for Obito... Minato never intended for him to go with Kakashi to kill people. Compared to Kakashi, Obito was clearly the normal kid.
"Yes, Obito, this time you'll act as a lookout for Kakashi, scouting the retreat route to prevent the enemy from sending reinforcements. Remember! This is very important. If you don't choose a good retreat route or keep watch properly, you'll be in danger if enemy reinforcements arrive. I believe you're smart enough to handle this, right?" Minato was afraid Obito wouldn't understand, and almost blurted out the words "just passing by," but he spoke very politely to avoid hurting Obito's pride.
"..." Kakashi listened from the side, his eyebrows twitching. The difference between people was truly vast. Back when he and the middle-aged man went to the Land of Earth to kill rogue ninja, the middle-aged man bluntly said he was just there for show. Then look at Minato—how much more tactful and elegant his words were! Support, lookout, scouting retreat routes!
226. The dashing Obito
"Don't worry! I'll take care of the support!" Obito, once again completely swayed by Minato, nodded very seriously, his heart surging with enthusiasm.
"..." Kakashi looked speechlessly at the passionate Dai-chan. Luckily, he lived in Konoha. It was hard to imagine how he would survive in other villages.
"Alright, now that it's dark, you can move around. I'll wait for you to come back here. Be careful," Minato said seriously, looking at them.
After the two nodded, they ran out of the cave and disappeared into the darkness. Not long after they left, Minato followed in the direction they had gone.
This is a tradition in Konoha. The first time blood is seen, the instructors will follow from a distance. These are the next generation of Konoha. How could they be so at ease letting them kill people on their own, especially a genius like Kakashi?
Kakashi and Obito hid near the bandit camp.
"You...you go ahead, I'll stay here and guard for you." Obito started to get nervous at this crucial moment, gripping his kunai tightly with both hands.
"...It's too early now! Let's wait until they're fast asleep before we make our move. Let's rest for a while first," Kadian said calmly. It was his first time about to kill someone, and he forced himself to stay calm.
"Okay... alright, then... let's rest for a while," Obito stammered.
Kakashi closed his eyes and sat on the ground, repeatedly simulating in his mind how to rush in and kill those bandits safely, quickly, and effortlessly. The results of his battle with Shanks' thousand clones had come to him, and he quickly came up with an idea.
"Huff! Huff!" A snoring sound woke Kakashi up. Looking at Obito, who was sleeping like a log, Kakashi almost exploded with anger.
"Looks like that bastard won't even need to cook soy sauce tonight." Kakashi thought, seeing Obito sleeping so soundly.
In the middle of the night, Kakashi finally made his move; otherwise, he would have been tormented by Obito's snoring.
Kakashi drew his dagger and disappeared into the night; it would have been even more perfect if he had concealed his white hair as well...
"Shh! Shh!"
Two heads flew off their bodies at the entrance of the camp. That's how skillful the Hatake clan's swordsmanship is. The professional headhunter has appeared again.
After defeating two guards, Kadian forced himself to slip into the camp, where a large hall in the middle was filled with about sixty or seventy people lying haphazardly.
He decided to clear out this wave of minions first, and quietly slipped into the hall with his short sword.
First blood!
"Pentakill!"
"Ten kills!"
"...Wipeout!"
After Kadian finished off the wave of minions in the hall, his legs felt weak and his hand holding the short sword trembled slightly. Killing a real person and killing a clone were indeed different. Killing a clone had no tactile sensation like killing a real person, especially when he saw the scene of blood flying everywhere. He almost threw up the lovingly prepared bento box that his wife had made for him.
..........
"vomit!"
After Kaden managed to suppress his nausea and finish off the bandits, he couldn't take it anymore and squatted down, vomiting up all of his dinner from the night before.
Minato, watching from the shadows, revealed admiration in his eyes as he observed Kakashi's performance tonight. He was already a teenager when he first killed someone, and his performance was similar to Kakashi's now. Kakashi, on the other hand, was only five or six years old, yet he performed far better than he had back then.
When Jiraiya took him to see blood, he was already stunned after killing his first person. Hiashi was not much better off. Although they were both mentally prepared, the fear still involuntarily arose when they actually killed someone for the first time.
Kadian's ability to suppress his fear and disgust and persevere until he defeated all the bandits demonstrates a courage far exceeding that of ordinary people.
After Kakashi recovered his strength, he returned to the place he and Obito had been watching, only to find Obito still fast asleep. Kakashi really wanted to take his head too. That bastard was so damn carefree, not even needing to provide support, he was practically throwing up his dinner inside. That bastard was dreaming.
"Obito, wake up!" Kakashi nudged Obito, who was sprawled out in a starfish position, with some liquid hanging from the corner of his mouth, seemingly lost in a dream.
"Get lost, Kakashi! Rin is mine!" Obito suddenly blurted out, then rolled over and went back to sleep, his expression becoming increasingly lewd.
"..." Kadian looked up at the sky speechlessly. What on earth were these mortals thinking? Besides, he had already been tricked out of one wife by the middle-aged man, and now another one was coming!
"Obito, wake up! Rin's here to see you..." Kakashi whispered in Obito's ear.
"What! Rin! Where is Rin?" Obito immediately opened his eyes and jumped up, looking around frantically.
“…Lin came looking for you just now and saw you were still sleeping, so she got pregnant.” Kadian said speechlessly.
"Get lost, Kakashi! You're lying to me! How could Rin possibly have left the village!" Obito realized he'd been tricked and glared fiercely at Kakashi.
"Mission accomplished, let's go!" Kadian didn't want to waste any more time with this brainless person, so he turned and left.
"Huh? Is the mission done? Seriously, they didn't even wake me up!" Obito complained blankly.
When the two returned to the original cave, Minato was waiting for them at the entrance.
"How's it going?" Minato asked with a smile.
"Haha! This kind of mission is too easy! I'm a genius, how could this kind of mission be difficult for me?" Before Kakashi could speak, Obito, who had just taken a nap, started bragging with renewed vigor.
"Yeah! I think so too. Let's go back!" Minato didn't call out Obito's words. Apart from Obito, he had never seen anyone do a mission so casually, taking a nap and leaving the rest to his teammates.
"What?! We finally got out here, don't be in such a hurry to go back and get it!" Obito was unhappy to hear Minato's words. This was not the same as what he had imagined: to come out on a mission, eat, drink, and have fun!
