Reincarnated As A Chameleon And Eating Everything To Evolve
Chapter 158 - Going Back To The Troll Village
After seeing for himself that the trolls had considerable strength, tough bodies, rapid regeneration, and the fact that they could even use magic. Matthew had been tempted to collect their monster data and make their slightly-cheating traits for himself.
He was quite conflicted at first when he first found out about these things as he felt quite bad killing fellow demihumans that will also be a help to fight the human army. However, after seeing the troll's attitude towards him and the kobolds, Matthew had lost all of his hesitations and had planned to come back to the troll village the moment he left this afternoon.
His goal, of course, is to gather the troll's monster data before going into his fourth evolution. He had been waiting to find something interesting for his fourth evolution and the troll's monster data just seem to fit the bill.
Matthew already had some plans with the bear's monster data for his fourth evolution. And initially, he had planned to evolve right away after getting enough bionutrients and completing the bear's monster data.
But then after accompanying the three kobolds fighting the deer and the boars, Matthew realized that even without evolving, he was still able to overwhelm all of his known opponents with the combination of the wolf's aura ability and the solid aura.
Other than that, Matthew had also wanted to increase his strength qualitatively rather than just keep on adding new body parts and new abilities to his body, but he didn't have excellent control over them.
And the result of his choice to focus on improving what he already had turned out to be fruitful as he now could form solid aura constructs in only a second and his fighting instinct had improved so much that he was now confident that he could surely get past the human general's defense if they ever fight again.
His ability to maximize the sense enhancement from his wolf's aura ability had also played a crucial part in his fight against the troll mage. Without being used to the feeling of his enhanced senses and knowing the abnormality of vibrations under his feet, it would be quite an impossible task for Matthew to completely dodge the troll mage's earth constructs only relying on his reaction time.
But after learning so much, Matthew had finally felt his strength had stagnated and it's hard for him to keep on having tremendous improvement for himself. Hence why he decided to travel deeper and deeper into the forest to both improve his fighting capabilities and also in search of a possible new monster data that could give his body a huge boost right after his fourth evolution. Then he finally found the perfect candidate, the trolls.
Just imagining himself had a tough body that can regenerate broken bones in a matter of seconds, even reattach a broken limb and the possibility of being able to use magic if his theory was correct, Matthew couldn't help but tremble in excitement.
Based on his experience from eating the bears, Matthew had guessed that he would probably need to kill the two troll guards to get 100% complete troll monster data.
However, it was easier said than done. Different from the beast, the trolls lived in a village and there were at least a hundred of them. Matthew might be able to kill the two trolls in under 10 seconds using sneak attacks, but how would he eat them? Dragging them both is impossible since their bodies are so huge and seem to be dense as well. He would only be able to run a few meters away before the other trolls from the village caught up to him.
And eating them right then and there is not an option. The troll's body was even bigger than the bear, 30 minutes is the fastest he could do. Although his eating speed had improved a lot, Matthew didn't have the ability to swallow a troll whole in only a few seconds.
He needed to lure one of the trolls first and execute him immediately before going after the second troll, finishing him before he realized that his friend was already dead.
Matthew knew that the trolls didn't have the brightest minds and he could somehow come up with a way to separate the two troll guards from each other. But Matthew wouldn't be too optimistic thinking they would be stupid enough to not realize the smell of their kin's blood when they realize one of them is missing.
'There's no way I could get rid of the smell of blood. I need to somehow divert his attention elsewhere or somehow mask the smell of blood with something else…'
'Hmm….'
Matthew then turned the gears on his mind and tried to think of a way to solve the problems. He tried to recall if there was something that could help him figure out the troll's weakness.
And after rewinding his memories, Matthew finally found something that might help him achieve what he want.
'It should be possible, but it will be quite troublesome…'
'If it will help increase my overall chances then I better do it. It will turn into a very complicated situation if I was caught by the troll village chief. I will rather be spending more time to be safe than sorry.'
Matthew then walked back towards the forest and started searching for the one key ingredient for his plan. He scoured the forest and spend almost another hour before finally finding his target.
Matthew quickly formed a solid aura blade without activating the wolf's aura ability and killed his one target. It was rather easy for him as his target was sleeping soundly with its group and it even died in its sleep without even realizing that it had lost its life.
He had achieved his goal flawlessly and it also helps that even though the other 4 creatures had seen him kill one of their kin, they decided to run away instead of retaliating or seeking revenge for their deceased friend.
'Come to think of it, I've never hunted anything at night after I leave the lake area… It's sure is bringing back some memories when I was still walking with 4 legs and had a tiny body…' Matthew mumbled while dragging a deer carcass on his left hand.
Matthew then returned back towards the area near the troll village and leave the deer carcass there, making sure a lot of the deer's blood are scattered everywhere in the area, permeating the bloody smell on the surroundings.
Now that his preparations were set, the only thing that was left for Matthew to do was to separate the two troll guards and lure one of them towards the deer carcass.
Which turned out to be not as complicated as Matthew had expected it to be due to the troll's not-so-high intelligence. Matthew only needed to make noises at two places at the same time which he achieved by simply throwing two sticks towards two trees in the opposite direction. One stick was thrown towards a tree near the deer carcass while the other was thrown randomly towards a tree in the exact opposite direction of the deer carcass.
The two troll guards heard the sound of the stick hitting the tree trunk and they talked to each other briefly before separating themselves from each other, going in each direction.
With one troll going into the deer carcass and the other one going in the complete opposite direction, Matthew was confident that he could kill the first troll without alerting the other one or the troll village.
At first, the troll that was going near the deer carcass was walking cautiously. But as he got closer and closer towards the deer carcass and the smell of the deer's blood started to enter his nose, the troll started to lose his cautiousness from the enticing smell of a meal near him.
The troll followed the smell of blood and he finally see the source of the smell.
An intact deer carcass with fresh blood still scattered everywhere was laid in front of his eyes.
Any human or intelligent being would of course wonder where did the freshly killed deer come from. However, the troll was not exactly the intelligent type as it relied more on its muscle strength and natural body toughness to do its everyday activities.
So, the troll didn't hesitate at all before running over towards the deer carcass.
Little did he know, there was an invisible creature waiting for him right beside the deer carcass. And when he bent over to take a bite of the deer carcass, he suddenly felt a slight prick on his neck.
But before he was able to move his hand to check what had caused the slight pain on the side of his neck, he suddenly saw that his world had turned upside down before feeling a wet sensation at the backside of his head.
His head had been cut off and fell directly on top of a puddle of the deer's blood.
