Reincarnated as an Overly Timid Countess

“Phew, what a worthless throw.”

Witnessing the moment when Teacher Gordon was unceremoniously flung away, the startled children froze and stared at me.

(My bad. Violence is ill-advised in front of children, isn’t it?)

I smiled at the kids in an attempt to fool them, but two of them, except Kanon, jolted back. They must have been…scared.

“You guys, cover your ears for a second and turn around.”

“R-Right away, Madam!”

I made sure the two kids and Kanon turned their backs before I faced Shar.

“Can you please explain what he meant by that? Why are you training to further reduce the number of wizards who are already few? Did you even know this was happening?”

Shar looked as unsure as a scolded child and answered the question in a whisper.

“Wizards are expected to be an elite few. You’ll be useless if you’re not strong enough, and in any case, you can’t survive. Isn’t that a fact?”

I let out a big sigh.

(It’s no good. The roots of brainwashing in the name of education are too deep from the head of the family.)

What the hell was going on with the Mercure family’s magical education? The whole thing they’ve been learning was bullshit.

I was confused as to where my perception of magic got distorted, but for now, I needed them to get their act together.

“Shar, the value of a wizard is not only determined by his ability to fight.  Of course, we need children who specialize in that, but we also need children who can heal wounds, make tools, assist in labor, etc. Magic is supposed to make life easier for people, don’t you think?”

“I’ve never heard of such a thing. Where did you get this information?”

Shar maintained a straight face as he said things like admonishing a troubled person.

This meant that the rotten education of the Mercure family was probably the mainstream of today’s world.

“…I-It was written in the magic book that was at one time in my parents’ house.”

I couldn’t just say that it was information 500 years ago.

It was because reincarnation was generally inconceivable, and I myself never thought it would happen until it happened to me.

“Ram, you may not understand this as a married woman, but we can’t afford to discredit the Mercure family by putting useless people to work. This House survives because it produces excellent wizards, and if it can no longer do so, it will fall into disuse.”

“Oh, God…That’s why wizards are an endangered species! Who was it that first came up with these stupid rules!”

Shar looked at me quizzically.

Gordon’s way of thinking was the norm here, and I guess that was how Shar, Hue and the kids were raised.

That was why no one questioned the current status quo. They, too, were victims.

(But we can’t go on like this. If this continues, there really will be no more wizards. Besides, they should be the last of the children who have to suffer.)

Since Gordon fainted, I suggested that Shar leave the training to me.

However, Shar gave me a complicated look.

“I’m uneasy about leaving you in charge alone.”

The way he said it was as if he was worried about his wife’s safety rather than complaining, showing unprecedented concern. Has he  grown up a bit?

“That’s why I, as the head of the family, will accompany you on your training.”

“If the children are in danger, you will help them, okay?”

“…If you wish it.”

I decided that Shar himself had not yet broken free from the common principle of the Mercure family.

Still, he began to have doubts and felt a positive willingness to concede to me.

It seemed that the sermon I gave him was not in vain.
