Chapter 54 - 54 - Jeon Se Heon

When Mi Young entered Se Heon's room, the only thing she saw was the man laying on the infirmary bed, she didn't even see the other person standing on the other side of the room.

"Se Heon!" Mi Young calls out as she runs towards where Se Heon was laying. She held the other party's hand as she whispers his name once more. "Se Heon…"

Mi Young didn't understand why she was suddenly feeling like that. She knows she doesn't have any romantic feelings for the boy, or does she? The black haired girl is so confused that she doesn't even know how to decipher her own emotions.

"That's because you are caranams." A lady's voice said, which made Mi Young look up from where she was kneeling near Se Heon's bed.

"Lady Ning Gwang?"

The beautiful woman rolled her eyes at her before pointing at Mi Young, "I told you to call me teacher."

The black haired girl, despite the pain in her heart upon seeing Se Heon unconscious, lets out a small smile. "I'm sorry, teacher."

"That's more like it. Now, I really feel like a real teacher." Lady Ning Gwang says as she starts walking closer towards Mi Young.

"But you are a real teacher?"

"Whatever."

Mi Young just shook her head at her teacher. Then she remembered what the other party said so she looked up to her once more before asking, "What do you mean about caranams?"

"Oh that. I researched it after you asked me about caranams. Based on what I have learned, caranams are two beings who share the same soul. Although each of you still has a soul of their own, your souls will be connected. You can feel what the other party is feeling and the same goes for him. You two will be attuned to each other. Having a caranam is somehow a curse and a blessing. A blessing because you will have someone who will understand you and protect you just as you will protect him in return. But it can also bring a curse to one another because if one will die, so will the other."

When Lady Ning Gwang finished her explanation, Mi Young remained mute, unable to say anything at all. There is too much to know about and she can feel her head going crazy with all the information she has received.

Why must it get to this?

She only wants to reach her goals, but why did she end up with this kind of responsibility?

Mi Young just wants nothing but to curl up in a ball and cry.

"Hey, at least you've got someone to be with you for the rest of your life." Lady Ning Gwang says, trying to cheer up the young girl.

"I don't want someone to be chained up to me." Mi Young answers. She was looking into space, head empty and eyes completely blank.

"It's up to you and Se Heon on how you two would deal with all of this." The librarian says. "But remember that caranams are soul bound, so you two must not separate for a long time."

And with that, the beautiful lady exits the infirmary without saying anything anymore.

Mi Young was left behind with an unconscious Se Heon and a mind about to explode with all the information she had just learned. Aside from that, she was also dealing with the prophecy that keeps on haunting her in her dreams.

Just as when Mi Young was about to close her eyes, the doors to the infirmary opened, revealing a worried looking Ji Sung.

When Mi Young sees his expression, her heart starts picking up its pace once more.

"What's wrong?" Mi Young asks.

Ji Sung didn't answer her immediately as he walked closer towards Se Heon's bed. The senior sighs before he grips Mi Young's shoulder. "The nurse said that Se Heon might not wake up anytime soon."

"What?" Mi Young can feel her whole body going numb upon hearing Ji Sung's words.

"This is what I was afraid of." Ji Sung whispered. "Don't worry Mi Young, let's just hope he wakes up sooner."

"Is there no cure at all?"

Ji Sung only shook his head before he explained to Mi Young what Se Heon's condition was. "You know about the two kinds of mana, right? The one we have inside our body which is the innate mana and the one in our surroundings which is called the pure mana."

Mi Young nodded her head in understanding. She knows what the other party was talking about but she doesn't get what the two kinds of mana have to do about Se Heon's condition. "When Se Heon was born, it was during the summer solstice. The summer solstice is the most anticipated yet the most dangerous time of the year for all Pyro users. It's because our innate mana will try to adapt with the growth of the pure mana all around us. This is also why during the summer solstice, everyone in the South will either be cultivating or meditating in order to keep their mana balance with the nature. If one doesn't do anything about it, all the innate mana present in his body will go out and will be replaced with the pure mana which will cause them to go berserk. Pure mana can be dangerous when it enters our body in huge sum."

The senior paused for a moment before brushing his hand on his cousin's hair, "Se Heon was born during the peak of the summer solstice. It is when the pure Pyro mana around us is at its highest point. Everyone inside the household was meditating during that time which means that everyone's body was balanced, except for him. Se Heon was still a newborn child so his unsuspecting body released all of his innate mana which gave the pure mana a room to enter."

"So you mean to say that Se Heon doesn't possess any innate mana for his Pyro element?" Mi Young asks.

Ji Sung nodded his head. "That is also why Se Heon rarely uses his Pyro element. For him, it's both a blessing and a curse. For one, all of his attacks will come from pure mana which means it will all be powerful. However, as he continues to release attacks using pure mana, which eats up loads of his energy, it will cause his body to fail and go berserk since he doesn't have any innate mana left for his soul. That is also why even though Se Heon's Pyro element is strong, the Jeons are still having a hard time deciding if he should rule the next generation given that he can only use his Pyro skills in a short amount of time before he will go unconscious. For the Jeons, it is a fatal flaw."

"Is this also the reason why Se Heon never experienced the love of his mother and father and why he was treated indifferently even though he is a direct disciple of the first Jeon?" Mi Young asked with her clenched fist.

"You knew about how he was treated?" Ji Sung questions, looking at Mi Young. When the girl nodded,  Ji Sung only then continued his sentence, "But yes. That's mainly the reason why the Jeons are having a hard time accepting him in the clan. But then Shi Yun came and they diverted their attention to the 'true' heir."

"So this is also why both brothers hated each other?"

Ji Sung chuckled at Mi Young's words. "Believe it or not the two of them were so close when they were still kids. Everywhere Se Heon goes, there's always little Shi Yun following behind him. However, when their mother and father started pampering Shi Yun with love and care, Se Heon was left behind. The older brother never hated Shi Yun but he distanced himself from his younger brother, afraid that he would only cause Shi Yun bad luck. Shi Yun took this in a wrong way and he thought Se Heon hated him because both the attention of their parents were given to him so that's how they ended up fighting every time they saw each other here on campus."

"Shi Yun is really dramatic." Mi Young kiddingly says while rolling her eyes.

"And so is Se Heon." Ji Sung says with a chuckle.

"They are indeed brothers." Ji Sung couldn't stop the huge laughter coming from his mouth when those words left Mi Young's lips.

"By the way, how did Se Heon end up having dual elements?"

"Oh he is a really rare gem because when he was trying to practice his Pyro skills back when he was young, he accidentally made a wrong movement on the technique he was executing. His teacher was about to scold him about it when a huge rock suddenly materialized out of nowhere in front of them." Ji Sung says with his eyes looking dazed as he recalls the memory of little Se Heon looking so innocent. "That's when everyone knew that Se Heon was blessed with two elements."

"How about you? When did you learn that you can't use the Pyro element?" Mi Young asked.

"Divining Cauldron." Was all Ji Sung said as he turns to looks at Mi Young with a sad smile. "That's why Se Heon and I are different but kind of the same as well."

Mi Young doesn't answer the other party as she looks at the still unconscious Se Heon that looks like he was only sleeping peacefully.

"I hope you forgive him for attacking you. He only wants to be included in the family." Ji Sung says.

The black haired girl remained silent as the both of them continued looking out for the unconscious boy.. They were so engrossed with their talk that they didn't even notice the figure at their backs, listening to the whole conversation all this time.
