Thorne and the others took Williams to the sanatorium. Holman produced the certificate that Hammer had given him, which, bearing the royal seal, allowed them easy access to this top-tier sanatorium.
The group placed Williams and the others on the hospital beds. Holman quickly went to find Margaret to explain the situation. Upon hearing this, Margaret rushed over with the box Thorne had given her. Domark looked at the IV drip she brought, still somewhat disbelieving.
Someone has actually invented a drug to treat tuberculosis? And it can already be injected directly into people. How long did that person research it? Why didn't they release it, but instead left it here?
But there was no time to worry about that now. The situation was urgent, and they had no choice but to try anything. Margaret followed the procedure and first performed skin tests on them. After confirming there were no abnormal reactions, she took out the IV drip and started injecting the people lying on the beds. Then she waited quietly. Thorne was also praying silently, hoping that it would be in time and that nothing bad would happen.
After what seemed like an eternity, good news finally arrived. Margaret walked out of the ward, took off her mask, and breathed a sigh of relief.
“Their fevers have subsided, and they are doing well now, already asleep,” Margaret said with a smile to everyone.
"what?!"
Upon hearing Margaret's words, Domark stood up in shock. Chain and Friedman were in a similar state of shock, wondering how this could be.
"I gonna go see."
Domark put on a mask and went inside. Sure enough, Williams was in much better condition than when he arrived. His fever had subsided, and his complexion had returned to normal. In short, everything was improving, and he was moving towards a full recovery.
"This, this, a miracle, a miracle!" Domark was trembling with excitement. He felt the blood rushing to his head, and he was so unsteady on his feet that he had to hold onto the wall for support.
"A miracle, a miracle!"
What kind of medicine is this? It's amazing! Domark seems to have seen a glimmer of hope in conquering tuberculosis. There are finally results! This disease that has threatened humanity for a century is finally going to be defeated.
The medical experts who came to investigate were all very excited. Their trip was well worth it. This was a discovery that could change the entire world. It's no exaggeration to say that this discovery could shake the medical community today and is definitely one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, capable of saving countless lives.
"Madam, may I ask who gave you these medicines?" Domark asked Margaret. What kind of person could have researched such medicines? This person must be a master. Why didn't he announce these discoveries and just leave them here casually?
“Yes, he was an old man. I don’t know where he came from. He stayed in the nursing home for a while and then left, leaving only these things behind,” Margaret said to Domark, following Holman’s instructions.
"What a great man!" Domark couldn't help but exclaim. Scientific researchers all have quirks. Perhaps that old gentleman just liked to bury himself in scientific research and didn't care about publishing papers at all.
They took the few pages of documents left by Thorne and began to study them. Thorne dared not show them too many, fearing that they might discover something wrong and he wouldn't be able to cover it up later.
Domark and his colleagues learned from the documents the extraction process and principles of this special drug for tuberculosis, and that what was extracted was an antibiotic called streptomycin. They also found another research report in the manuscript.
It was called a research report, but it was actually just a record. The experimenter accidentally forgot that he was still culturing Staphylococcus in the laboratory, and the lid of the container was not closed, so the bacteria were all exposed to the air.
Three weeks later, the experimenters discovered the accident. The staphylococci that were supposed to be cultured had grown white mold on their heads. They were going to throw these useless things away, but they found that after the staphylococci came into contact with the air and grew greenish mold, the staphylococci disappeared. Moreover, the closer they were to the greenish mold, the fewer staphylococci there were.
The record ends here, but it has stirred up a huge wave in everyone's hearts. This discovery is amazing. Although it is just an observation report, it will definitely play a greater role after specific research.
After reading these reports, Domark was filled with admiration. Their trip had been incredibly worthwhile; these world-shaking discoveries were of immeasurable value.
Domark was determined to stay; he wanted to continue his research and find a result in these miracle drugs!
Chapter Seventy-Three Erwin
Williams didn't know how long he had been unconscious. In his hazy state, he only heard someone calling him, but at that moment, he felt as if he had fallen into an abyss and couldn't say a word.
Williams, who was in a coma, had many nightmares, his head was throbbing and pounding, and his mouth tasted bitter and was very dry.
He opened his eyes and found himself lying in an unfamiliar room. The walls were painted white, a thick blanket was laid on the floor, and the air smelled of disinfectant. He was momentarily disoriented and didn't know where he was.
Where is this?
Williams frowned, rubbed his head, and tried to recall his memories before he lost consciousness. He felt a splitting headache, as if a million ants were biting him.
"You're awake!"
A voice suddenly came from beside the bed. He turned his head and saw a nurse in a white coat standing in front of the bed, smiling at him.
"Where am I? Where are my parents?" Williams asked, clutching his head. He had just remembered that he was on his way to buy medicine for his father, but he felt terrible for some reason, and then he seemed to run into Mr. Carl, and then he couldn't remember anything else.
“This is a sanatorium. You fainted from your illness and were brought here for treatment.”
"A sanatorium?!" Williams was clearly startled when he heard this. How could he afford to stay in a sanatorium?
"I'll leave right away, I'll leave right away. How much money do you need? I'll give you as much as I can. If it's too much, I'll owe you for now and I'll definitely pay you back later." With that, he got out of bed and walked out.
"Oh, lie down." Margaret quickly stepped forward to help him lie down. "Lie down, it's alright. Someone will cover your medical expenses here, so just focus on recovering."
"Someone helped me out? Who was it? I don't have any friends."
“Hollman is my husband. He works at the Rheinmetall factory, you know that?”
“Mr. Holman?” Williams thought for a moment. “I know him. I remember he came with Mr. Carl and Mr. Thallman.”
“That’s right. My husband met a very powerful man in Frankfurt. They became friends after doing business together. When my youngest daughter got sick, that gentleman kindly helped us cover the medical expenses. You don’t need to pay anything to stay here either. That gentleman gave my husband a certificate so you can stay indefinitely,” Margaret said with a smile.
"Well, thank you," Williams said to them after hearing Margaret's words.
Where are my parents?
"They're receiving treatment there too, and they should wake up soon."
"Williams, you're awake." Thorne walked in with a glass of water.
"Here, drink some water."
"Thank you, Mr. Carl." Williams took the water glass, and after a few sips, he felt much better. His mouth was no longer bitter, and his throat didn't hurt as much as before.
"I feel much better now, I don't need to stay here anymore. I have to go to work tomorrow, so I'll go home now."
“Stop,” Thorne stopped Williams, who was trying to leave. “Just stay here for the next few days. Don’t worry about the expenses. That gentleman has already made arrangements, and he’s also taken care of things after you’re discharged.”
"I've come to say goodbye. I'm leaving now. Take care of yourself."
"Mr. Carl, are you leaving?" Williams seemed a little disappointed after hearing this.
“Yes, Williams, it’s great to have met a friend like you these past few days. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon.”
Thorne said goodbye to Williams and then left; he was going to return under a different identity.
Outside the house, Domark and his group were still studying the report. They were looking at the documents and marveling at their brilliance. They had decided to study the contents of the report carefully here.
“Your Highness Thorne,” Butler Hammer entered from outside. “Your Highness Thorne, the mayor of Darmstadt invites you to visit Darmstadt.”
"Are you Prince Thorne?" Domark was somewhat surprised. He had previously been invited to a banquet at the palace and met Butler Hammer, but he never expected to meet Prince Thorne here.
"Your Highness Thorne, have you been in Darmstadt these past few days?"
"Yes, I was also puzzled by the tuberculosis problem here in Darmstadt, so I came here to take a look in person these days."
"So, you've been working here all these days?" Domark found it incredible that a prince like him would personally come down to work. It was amazing.
“None of that matters.” Thorne waved his hand. “If you want to stay here, then focus on researching how to treat tuberculosis. Don’t worry about funding; I will support your research. Tuberculosis is very serious here. I need to go back and report to my father first.”
"Yes." After hearing this, everyone bowed to Thorne.
“Let’s go.” Thorne waved to Thallman. “Holman, you stay here. It’s time to reunite with your wife and children.”
"Thank you, Your Highness."
Thorne then spoke to the local Stasi agents, instructing them to keep a close watch and report any developments immediately. He then left Darmstadt. As for how to explain things to the factory manager, Thorne didn't ask for wages. Upon hearing this, the manager immediately let Thorne go. What a fool! He had to take advantage of this great deal.
After Thorne left, Williams felt empty. He got out of bed and went to another ward where he found his parents recuperating. Daisy had also woken up and looked much better. She was sitting on the bed with another little girl, flipping through a fairy tale book.
It all felt like a dream; Williams still couldn't quite believe that he was actually receiving treatment here.
"Where is Mr. Carl?" Elena asked her father when she came over and didn't see Mr. Carl and Mr. Thallman.
"Mr. Carl and the others have left and gone back."
"He's gone." Hearing her father's reply, Elena felt a little disappointed. She had been getting along quite well with Mr. Karl these past few days, except for certain things.
"I'll go check on Arya first." Elena left with an excuse, and Holman felt a mix of emotions as he watched her departing figure.
Darmstadt is very busy right now because His Highness Thorne has accepted the mayor's invitation to visit the city in a while. In addition to city issues, security issues also need to be resolved, so the troops stationed in Darmstadt are also very busy.
"gather!"
Upon hearing the signal, a group of soldiers rushed out of the barracks and stood at attention.
Looking at the assembled soldiers, Erwin Rommel nodded, then walked aside to report the situation.
"Reporting, Battalion Commander! Our company is assembled!"
"Ah, very good."
The battalion commander smiled and looked at the assembled soldiers. "His Highness Thorne will be coming to Darmstadt to inspect the situation in a few days. Your company must be responsible for security, understand?"
"Understood! Promise to complete the task!"
"Very good. Do your best this time. If His Highness takes a liking to you, your future will be limitless!" The battalion commander patted Rommel on the shoulder to encourage him.
"Attention all departments! You must be responsible for this security work and protect His Highness Thorne's safety. Understand?"
"Understood! Promise to complete the task!"
Hearing his subordinate's reply, Rommel nodded in satisfaction and then shouted.
Long live the kingdom!
"Long live the kingdom!" the entire company of soldiers shouted.
Just as Rommel was preparing to organize security, Rom was also preparing his assassination plan. The mayor probably never dreamed that such an ordinary inspection would involve so many forces.
If that mayor knew about this operation, he would probably have fled overnight.
The day Thorne arrived in Mstadt was destined to be anything but peaceful.
Chapter Seventy-Four: Clash
"Father."
Thorne slowly walked forward and bowed to Prince Otto, who was sitting there.
"came back?"
Prince Otto smiled as he watched Thorne walk forward. Thorne seemed to have become much more mature and composed since he last saw him.
"So, what have you found in this investigation over the past period?"
"Father, this is my investigation report from this period of time."
After Thorne finished speaking, he handed over what he had recorded in Darmstadt to Prince Otto.
As Otto looked at the report Thorne handed him, his expression grew increasingly grim. Finally, he placed the report on the table and remained silent.
"Did you see all of this with your own eyes?"
“It’s all firsthand observation, what I’ve seen and heard on the front lines these past few days,” Thorne replied. “There are also some documents collected by the Stasi and Gestapo. Father, I can send them over if you’d like to see them.”
Otto looked at Thorne, then at the report. "Come here and show me your hand."
Thorne stepped forward and extended his hands. He had been working at the machine factory these past few days, and his hands were injured in many places, with some black oil stains that he couldn't wash off.
“You’ve grown up,” Prince Otto said slowly. “This matter is now in your hands. Those who deserve to be killed or arrested are your responsibility. You must also handle the aftermath properly.”
"Yes, father."
Thorne was about to leave when Prince Otto called him back, "Thorne, if you have time, go and visit King Charlemagne's study."
Thorne was somewhat puzzled. Wasn't Charlemagne's study only open to the successive kings of the Rhine Kingdom? Each new king would study in Charlemagne's study for three days after taking the throne, which was a royal tradition. He was a prince, and the second prince at that. How could he be qualified to go in?
"I'll let them know, just don't forget."
“Understood, Father.” Thorne finished speaking and withdrew. Prince Otto sighed as he watched Thorne leave.
He was the youngest king in the kingdom after Charlemagne, and should have been full of energy. He had heard many stories about that legendary emperor when he was young and always took Charlemagne as his role model.
But now he finds himself increasingly powerless. He is unaware of so many things happening in the kingdom. Darmstadt has become like this, and the whole kingdom knows it, but he is oblivious.
He tried everything, but in the end it seemed like he was just repairing a dilapidated house. Otto felt powerless, and perhaps it was true, as Charlemagne once said, that the tides of time would swallow them all up.
Prince Andreas may be able to become a ruler who maintains the status quo, but his health is a problem. Moreover, the future kingdom does not need to maintain the status quo, but rather to change. The future kingdom needs a complete transformation.
Clearly, Otto couldn't do it, and neither could Andreas. So, only Thorne remained. This previously unknown prince seemed to have become a different person after the Polish campaign. Otto now placed his hopes on him. Perhaps he could lead the Kingdom of the Rhine to a new life, or preserve the kingdom's will in another way.
After Thorne left, he first visited his brother, and then went to the Stasi headquarters to exchange intelligence with Thomas and his team to ensure the success of the operation.
He learned from Thomas that Grote was gay and a masochist, and then he was shocked to learn about Fred's past. He thought, "My brother has suffered so much. Who knew this guy was such a pervert?"
"This operation requires the cooperation of the Stasi. How are Alpha and Flagstaff doing?" Thorne asked Thomas.
"Your Highness, Alpha and signal flags are ready and await your orders."
“The Gestapo is ready too,” Heydrich continued. “Our men have arrived in Mstadt, and everything is prepared to ensure everything goes smoothly.”
“Very good.” Thorne nodded. “We have to deal with a lot of people this time, and this is our first real combat mission. We can’t afford to make any mistakes. Tell Fred to get ready as well, and the mobile team should also go out for some training. I will speak with Lieutenant General Milch Strachwitz, and he will send a group of men to reinforce us.”
Thorne is ready. This time, he's going to strike hard and send all these parasites to where they belong. The Gulag has already cleared out several suites for them so they can reflect on their actions here.
