That attempt made him experience firsthand all the pain of a dying flesh man. Blood flowed from his mouth and nose, and he twitched on the stone slab.
He stopped eating people after that.
But these orphans had to eat humans; they didn't have corpse starch to eat like he did.
Curze blocked them at the exit and spoke to the orphans' wide, fearful eyes.
"You are guilty and you must atone for your sins. Come with me or die here."
The orphans have no choice. Even their adults have died at the hands of Koze. What can they use to resist?
Sevatar didn't taunt him. He was so weak that he didn't even have the energy to taunt him.
They killed many people and took many people away.
The ones who died were adults, and the ones who were taken away were children.
"You don't allow us to eat humans," Sevatar walked up to Curze, "We can't afford to feed so many people."
"We have cadaver starch."
Sevatar shook his head: "The rich and powerful will not give us food for free. My father exchanged it for wizards."
"I'll figure it out," Coates said.
Sevatar didn't say anything else. Forget it, it wasn't his turn anyway, so why should he worry about it?
……
Sevatar's life is very regular.
During the day he would go to school, where Curze would teach him how to fight, Dorothy would teach him knowledge, and Wop would teach him how to control his psychic powers and principles.
At 'night', Curze would take them out on patrol and hunting, hunting those who violated the order.
The Bottom Nest had no morals, and Coze didn't expect scavengers and gang members to understand the complexities of the law.
So his order was very simple: no murder, no strength.
They can break the law, but they better pray they don't get caught by him, because he only has the death penalty.
Many people died, and the remaining people were too scared to go out, but more and more children were sent to their camps.
Some were voluntary, some were snatched.
According to Coates, they all need to atone for their sins.
Sevatar gradually got used to this kind of life, and his technique of slitting people's throats became more and more skillful.
"We are the Midnight Haunters, and we are watching you."
Sevatar had warned others like this more than once, and he thought it was stupid and shameful.
But it was really effective, and everyone alive was scared by them.
Then came the war.
"Hadrid's gang has declared war on us," Dorothy said. "Hadrid heard about Sevitarion's death and that it was a group of children who occupied the Blood Claws' territory. He has united with seventeen other gangs and has entered our territory."
There are hundreds of gangs in the bottom nest, and these gangs, large and small, occupy the top of the bottom nest's ecological niche.
The Blood Claws were once one of the most powerful gangs because they controlled the elevators, which were the only way for the bottom nest to connect with the upper class.
The Hadrids are another gang that controls the elevators, but they wouldn't mind controlling one more elevator, which is why the Hadrids declared war on them.
Ever since the day the Blood Claw Gang was destroyed, Dorothy knew this day would come sooner or later.
The Night Haunter might be intimidating in the Blood Claws' territory, but in the eyes of other gangs, it's probably just a child's play.
Sevatar: "Father... The Blood Claws run this place like an iron barrel. As long as we guard the gate, they can't break in."
Sevatar's confidence is not groundless. The Blood Claw Gang has been destroyed, and only Wop and Dorothy are adults among the Night Haunters, while the others are children.
But the weapons left by the Blood Claw Gang are still there. Their laser guns and scrap guns are several times more than those of other gangs, and their defenses are impregnable.
"That's too passive," Curze said coldly. "We need to be proactive. If they declare war on the Night Haunter, then the Night Haunter will sentence them to death."
Sevatar fiercely retorted: "That's too dangerous. The Hadrid Gang is even more powerful than the Blood Claw Gang. They have a wizard. Not a half-baked wizard like me, but a real wizard!"
Koz ignored him and looked at Wop. Only Wop's opinion was important to him here.
Wop: "Koz, what's your plan?"
"We infiltrate the Hadrid Gang and kill them all, just like we did with the Blood Claws. We capture the leader first."
"What about this place?" Wop asked. "When we leave, the Hadrid Gang will probably launch a large-scale attack. Are you going to give up this place?"
"I will not give up the kingdom I worked so hard to build," Curze said. "Sevatar, you will protect the camp while we are away."
Sevatar's pale face flushed with anger.
"You killed my father and destroyed my gang, and now you expect me to do everything in my power to protect your gang. Do you think I will agree to that?"
"Yes." Curze interrupted Sevatar's charge with just one word, "I can see that you have justice in your heart."
Sevatar fell silent, his face flushing even redder, but this time there was something more than anger in it.
Dorothy smiled. Sevatar was not a bad boy. He just lacked proper guidance and a good father.
……
"Koz, you've grown again."
Coze was moving through the darkness, and Wop's sigh made him look back.
“You taught me well.”
"That only works if you're willing to listen to me. If I lecture others at length, they'll definitely think I'm stupid."
Wop's outspokenness brought a smile to Coze's pale face. Yes, he was the only one who was special.
No one else is as good as him, whether it is Sevatar or Fili.
"You smiled."
"No, you're seeing things." Coze turned his head away. "We're almost there. Don't make any noise, or it will expose us."
Wop sighed sadly. The child had grown up and started to rebel, but it felt like only a short time had passed.
Coze saw Wop's expression, his heart softened, and he lowered his head:
"sorry."
"What?" Wop didn't hear clearly.
"I laughed," Coates said with a straight face.
Chapter 18 Accomplice
Koz quietly walked to the sentry post, covered the sentry's mouth, and cut his throat with the fragment without making a sound.
Wop followed behind him. Coze knew that Wop would not take action until he was in danger, but the fact that Wop was with him made Coze feel at ease.
Sevatar says the Hadrids are more powerful than the Blood Claws, but to Curze there's no difference.
Their bodies are all equally fragile.
He is familiar with every killing technique without any instruction. He knows how to torture others and how to kill efficiently.
Coates chose the latter, even though the former would bring greater fear.
"Too much is as bad as too little," he thought.
He saw in many people's future a future where people were ruled by high pressure and fear, which would indeed reduce the crime rate to a very low level and eliminate all crime from the planet.
He didn't see a more distant future, and a society without crime satisfied Coze, but he felt that such a society was flawed.
When he was around, he could bring enough fear to the people.
But what happens when he leaves?
Without his high-pressure rule, the world would quickly return to its original state, with crime rampant.
He also saw a bright future. He saw that the killers in the bottom nest turned over a new leaf under his inspiration, and he saw that everyone was yearning for a better future.
He likes this kind of future, but this future is too beautiful to be realistic.
Wop told him that the world is a delicate gray, and also told him that class and privilege will never disappear. Is a society with class and privilege really so beautiful?
It's just a shiny surface.
Both futures had flaws, so Coates decided to compromise.
Society needs rules, laws need to be upheld, and fear ensures that they will be enforced.
Coates slashed the neck of a gang member and told the child he was taking for a walk, "Your father deserved it, but I won't kill you. Go home and hide. This will all be over soon."
He dumped the body on the side of the road, over the child.
The child's eyes were filled with fear, but hatred still drove him to pick up the gun on the ground and point it at Coze's back.
Just as he was about to pull the trigger, Coates disappeared into the darkness like a ghost.
"What a shame." Coz lifted the child up by the neck. "I gave you a chance. You could have redeemed yourself."
He broke the boy's neck and put him together with his father.
Wop followed behind and shattered their bodies with his psionic powers, allowing Curze to sneak in safely.
Koz walked to the room of the leader of the Hadrid Gang with ease.
All gangs are the same, the leader always lives in the center of the gang camp, symbolizing their authority. The house is next to the elevator and holds power.
Koz pushed the door open, and the thin iron door inevitably made a creaking sound.
But Koz's movements were so light that the slightest sound would be drowned out by the whispers of the people.
But this time it was different, the house was very quiet.
Koz felt threatened, his body and mind were on alert, he decisively gave up opening the door and hid behind the wall.
"Boom!"
Dozens of scrap guns and laser guns fired at the door. The scrap bullets and red light beams weaved into a rain of death, corroding honeycomb-like holes in the iron door.
Koz saw the trajectories of all the bullets and light beams clearly. Time seemed to be playing in slow motion before his eyes. He carefully avoided all the trajectories and rushed into the house, starting a bloody massacre.
The fragments cut the man's neck, and the death storm followed, turning him into a sieve, with blood flowing from the broken wound.
Although Koz moved quickly, he was inevitably hit by a bullet.
His shoulder ached, scarred by the laser burn.
He did it on purpose, he didn't want to be hit by the scrap gun because he didn't want to dig out the bullet in front of Wop, which would make him worried.
The lasers wouldn't matter, as his wounds would heal quickly once this battle was over, and Wop wouldn't know he was injured.
Koz harvested the enemy's lives with astonishing efficiency. Their bullets were soon exhausted. Fear made them stop in their tracks. They could not keep up with Koz's speed. More and more people fell to the ground, covering their necks and whimpering in pain in a pool of blood, which further intensified the fear in the hearts of the living.
"Get out of here!" A man who was stronger and taller than the others walked out of the secret room and roared like thunder.
He was holding a heavy logging gun, and judging from the deaths of his men, he could tell Coze's next target and opened fire in advance.
"Bang bang bang bang!"
The lumberjack gun emptied a hundred rounds of bullets in a few seconds, and several of his men were torn to pieces by the metal storm, but the sound of them falling to the ground came from the other side.
Coze had spotted him long ago.
He had never seen a lumberjack gun, but he knew the thing and its power.
He had a hunch that even if all the bullets hit him, he would not die, but why did he use his body to catch the bullets?
Killing people in sequence was just an illusion he left on these people. He was like a fish in water in the darkness and he could kill anyone he wanted.
"Game over." A cold voice echoed in the ears of the man holding the logging gun.
The man broke out in a cold sweat. He threw away his lumberjack gun and reached for the dagger at his waist, but the blood kept pouring out of his throat and he had to cover the wound with both hands.
The man fell to the ground, his men falling one after another, and no one could stop Curze.
But the man always had a doubt in his heart.
"Where is the wizard?"
He has supported the wizard for so many years, and even his beloved wife and daughter have been played with by the wizard for so many years. Why doesn't the wizard help him?
