Chapter 8: Curze Wants to Be a Hero
Bottom Nest has no time.
People live numbly, and when they wake up they start running for food. This is daytime.
After finding food, we go home to rest. That’s the night.
One cycle is one day.
When Fili woke up, she saw Wop sitting at the door, looking outside through the gap.
Fili bravely asked, "Did you not sleep all night?"
Wop: "I can't sleep."
He was not used to the environment here, nor to the darkness here.
Besides, they needed someone to keep watch.
Fili filled half a bowl of porridge, took a piece of rat meat from the cupboard and handed it to Wop.
"I only have half a bowl left."
Fili's voice was low, and she lowered her head even lower.
"You can eat, I'm not hungry."
"But you didn't eat anything yesterday."
"It doesn't matter. You won't die of hunger if you don't eat for a day."
"But my mother died of starvation after not eating for two days."
Koz woke up and saw Fili looking like she was about to cry.
He saw the porridge in Fili's hand and swallowed. He was hungry.
Coz looked at Wop as if asking if he could eat.
"No." Wop pressed his head. "We are guests. How can we let our hosts go hungry?"
Koz said "oh", but Wop also understood that the child was in the growth stage now and he couldn't let him starve, so he decided to get something to eat.
Wop: "Philip, do you know where the elevator is?"
"The Blood Claw Gang controls the elevator in that direction." Fili pointed.
"Can you take us there?"
Fili nodded and said worriedly, "We have to walk for three days, but I have no food."
Wop: "I'll figure it out."
Feili looked at the half bowl of porridge in her hand. She had gone out to look for food yesterday, but unfortunately she didn't find any food and was almost raped.
If she stayed at home, she would have starved to death like her mother.
Fili drank two mouthfuls of porridge and handed it to Koz.
Koz didn't take it and shook his head, so Fili had to drink it alone.
Fili thought they were weird. They were obviously very hungry but still refused her food. People like that wouldn't live long in the bottom nest.
Fili packed her luggage because she had a premonition that she might never come back after leaving this time.
But she didn't really have much luggage, just a few pieces of rat jerky and three old filters.
Fili replaced the filter on her breathing mask and handed the remaining two to Wop and Koz.
Wop: "You can use it yourself, we don't need it."
"He'll die." Fili whispered.
If you want to survive in the bottom nest, the filter is more important than food, otherwise you will die of lung rot in no time.
Wop: "Don't worry, we are not like you."
Curze is the Primarch and he has the Emperor's protection. They will also die one day, but not here.
Fili didn't insist anymore. She put on a breathing mask, put on all the clothes at home, and wrapped herself tightly before going out.
She took one last look at her house and walked into the darkness without hesitation.
The luxury at the top of the tower is changing with each passing day, while the suffering at the bottom is the same all the time.
The scenes they saw along the way remained the same: dirty streets, dilapidated shacks, busy scavengers, and crime.
The man dragged the woman into the alley and strangled her to death after a few gasps and screams.
He was so hungry, he needed to vent, but he needed food even more.
The woman stabbed the man in the back with a knife, but she missed the man's heart by an inch.
The man reacted and they started fighting, and both of them fell into the smelly puddle.
The scavengers rushed over, greedily pulled off their clothes, and divided their flesh with knives.
Fili wrapped her clothes tightly. She just wanted to leave as soon as possible and get away from this place of uncertainty.
But Wop stopped, and so did Coz.
Wop: "What do you think?"
"They're committing a crime, and I don't like it," Coates said.
"You can stop them. You have the power to do so."
"But you told me that people must survive before they can talk about morality."
"I said that, but you don't have to listen."
"I think you are right, so I choose to listen to you."
"So you plan to keep watching like this?"
Koz nodded, then shook his head.
"I don't like crime. I want to change this. How can I do this?"
He turned to Wop for help, but Wop had no answer.
"what are you thinking?"
"I want to feed them so they don't have to commit crimes or eat people."
"That's great, what are you going to do about it?"
“Get more food.”
"Who has food then?"
"The gangs," Coz thought, "and the upper class."
“Will they give you the food?”
"will not."
"Then how do you get their food?"
"Rob."
"Isn't this also a crime?"
Koz was stunned. He looked at the crowd rushing to grab pieces of flesh from the corpse. Weren't they just grabbing?
Wop asked, "They are killing people, and you killed someone yesterday. What's the difference?"
Koz raised his little face and said seriously, "They are committing crimes, and I am stopping them. They rob to survive, and I rob for the survival of more people. This is not a crime, this is called revolution."
"Yes, and no." Wop pointed to the darkness above. "You should know what class is, and then you should know what class oppression is. Just like the structure of this hive city, the upper class inherently has the power to oppress the lower class. Most of the human tragedies you see are the direct or indirect products of class oppression."
Coze asked, "Then I should eliminate classes?"
"As long as there are differences between people, classes will never be eliminated, class oppression will always exist, and crime will never truly disappear. This is human nature," said Woppe. "The key is who holds power. If they hold power, the world will always be like this. But what if it is you who holds power?"
"If I were in power," Coates gradually came to a clear understanding, "I would change all this. Classes cannot be eliminated, but class differences can be leveled. Class oppression will always exist, but oppression can be reduced. Crime will not disappear, but the crime rate can be reduced."
"What do you really think?"
Koz nodded.
Wop: "Then do as you wish and practice your justice."
The Primarchs were born with knowledge; they understood everything.
But there are so many, so many different truths in this world. Some say rabbits don't eat grass near their burrows, while others say those who live near water get the moon first. Some say a true man can bend and stretch, while others say a true man would rather die than yield. These truths are all true, yet they are all very one-sided.
No one likes to be lectured at length, especially by someone who knows a lot.
The same goes for the Primarchs; they don't need preaching; they need guidance, through words and deeds.
The reason why Curze became the Dark Batman was largely because the corrupt world of Nothramos had no one who could guide him to understand the world correctly.
But the Primarch knew too much, and he didn't want to go along with the evil and fall into darkness.
So he could only think about it by himself, but the more people think alone, the more likely they are to get stuck in a rut.
Chapter 9 Heavy Metal Excessive Warning
Coz just watched.
Crime is everywhere, happening among scavengers, for food, for filters, for a drink of water that is not so dirty, for surviving 'tomorrow'.
Many people died along the way, both men and women.
Koz didn't save anyone.
"They're numb. You can't save them."
That's what Wop said.
Coze felt that he was right, that everyone in the Bottom Nest was both a victim and a criminal.
He can save them once, but he can't save them for a lifetime. He can save one person, save a hundred people, but he can't save everyone.
Because the root of the crime is not here.
"Goo!"
Fili's stomach was growling loudly, and so was Koz's.
They had been walking for too long and were very hungry. They needed food and rest.
Wop looked around, searching for his target.
"I'm hypocritical," Wop said. "I have to kill someone now, but I don't want to kill anyone casually, so I'm looking for someone who can kill him with a clear conscience."
Koz shook his head: "You don't have to, I can kill people."
"It's all the same." Wop smiled. "There's something called karma. I don't believe in it, but it can explain some things. It might seem like you killed someone, but in reality, I was the one who killed them."
Philly was ignorant and didn't understand these big principles. She only knew that Wop was going to kill people in order to find food for them.
It’s nothing, people die in the bottom nest every day.
She had killed people, too, including a man who tried to cradle her mother and others who tried to steal their food.
In the bottom nest, you can't survive without killing people.
“Run, hurry up!”
The man's scream pierced the darkness, but the bullet hit his shoulder with a bang, and he soon fell to the ground screaming in pain.
"Run! Why aren't you running anymore? I wonder how long you bastards can run!"
"Damn bastard, you wasted a bullet of mine."
"Catch that little bastard and don't let him get away!"
The men caught up with the man cursing and stabbed him in the heart, ending his life.
"It's the Blood Claw Gang." Fili shrank her neck in fear.
"Look, isn't it coming?"
Wop smiled and did not rush to kill. Instead, he observed the person the man wanted to protect before he died.
