Chapter 1876 Watching Rebecca's Performance
The white woman, Jones, watched as Luna pulled Chen Feng past her, and her expression turned slightly unpleasant.
However, she had a strong mentality and quickly adjusted her emotions, showing no intention of continuing the argument, and returned to her original seat.
"Jones, what's going on?" Adrian, sitting opposite Jones, looked at him with some confusion. This chubby, bald, white man was Jones's admirer; he had been pursuing Jones for several months, but so far, there hadn't been much progress.
Jones was in a bad mood and hadn't originally planned to explain anything. But thinking that the other person might still be useful, he patiently explained, "I think this Asian man is very charming and handsome. He's perfect for an advertising role that my company is planning. Besides, I think he's a promising talent. If he wants to be a model, he might make a name for himself in the future, so I want to sign him."
In fact, what she said wasn't entirely a lie, but it wasn't entirely the truth either. Her main reason was that she was deeply attracted to Chen Feng, a man with an exotic charm. Even though she was over forty and knew her youth was long gone, she couldn't help but feel a stirring of romantic feelings and wanted to pursue a younger man. But this was something she certainly couldn't tell this suitor in front of her.
“I see.” Adrian nodded, feigning understanding. In reality, only he knew what he was truly thinking. He quickly changed the subject: “I know a music bar with a great atmosphere and a folk singer performing there. Want to go there tonight and grab a drink?”
They had known each other for a few months, and he knew that Jones had a bit of a bourgeois sensibility and loved country folk and jazz music.
Sure enough, Jones, who was in a bad mood, suddenly became interested and asked directly, "Is it far from here? You know, it's too late, and I don't want to go if it's too far."
Adrian immediately replied, "It's not far, only about 20 kilometers from here. It only takes about ten minutes to drive there, and that bar has a minimum charge. The people who go there are generally well-mannered and cultured, not those dirty drunks. And there are many young men and women who frequent that bar together."
Jones hesitated for a moment before nodding and saying, "Alright then. What time tonight? Let me know then, and we'll go together."
Adrian quickly replied, "Actually, we can go now; they've already opened for business. However, the busiest time is definitely not around this time, probably around 10 o'clock. We can leave at 9:30 and arrive there when it's at its most bustling."
"Okay, let's go together then."
Meanwhile, Chen Feng and Luna had already ordered dinner. After the waiter left, Luna frowned slightly and asked Chen Feng, "What was that older woman all about? Did you really only see her once before?"
Chen Feng said irritably, "So what do you think? Do you think I have any connection with her? You just saw it yourself, I don't really pay attention to her, but she's the one who's been bothering me and even gave me her business card. But she doesn't have my business card or contact information, and I don't plan to give it to her."
Upon hearing Chen Feng's words, Luna was delighted and quickly nodded, saying, "You're absolutely right. These older women are clearly after your body; don't let them bewitch you."
Chen Feng frowned and said, "Alright, that's enough. How could I possibly be interested in a woman her age, especially one whose figure has already changed a bit?"
Luna smiled and dropped the subject, changing the subject to something else.
Before long, their meals were served. They had ordered a simple dinner, each with only three or four dishes. They chatted and laughed, finishing their meal in less than half an hour.
The two then went back to their room. They rested for a while, watched TV, and chatted. Time passed quickly, and around 9:30, Luna changed into a new outfit and put on light makeup. Then Chen Feng took her, along with two bodyguards, in the hotel car to the bar where Rebecca was to perform that evening.
On the way, Luna contacted Rebecca and confirmed her performance time, which was around 10:30. It was a little early to go now, but they could catch other resident singers perform, have some drinks, and chat.
According to Luna, the atmosphere at this bar was quite nice; she had been there a few times before. Although many men approached her each time, they were all quite polite and wouldn't bother her after she declined.
A dozen minutes later, the car arrived at its destination.
The bar is located on a bustling commercial street. It's quite large and has two floors. The exterior is decorated in a rather luxurious style, and there are several burly men standing at the entrance conducting security checks with metal detectors, scanning IDs and driver's licenses. Only those 21 years or older are allowed inside.
Women can enter for free, but men have to pay $30 each to enter, which is not cheap.
Furthermore, there's a minimum spend inside. Each person must spend at least thirty dollars; otherwise, the minimum spend applies. So, even though the women's entrance fee is waived, they still have to pay thirty dollars inside, meaning the men will have to spend at least sixty dollars in total. If they also have to pay for the women's expenses, the total cost will be even higher.
Therefore, this bar is relatively high-end, at least mid-range or above. People with limited funds generally can't afford to go in, nor would they be willing to, given the existence of free, lower-end bars.
Chen Feng's four companions, including two bodyguards, paid the $90 entrance fee together. Inside, the first floor had open-plan booths with a dance floor in the middle. A small stage was connected to the dance floor against the wall. The second floor had private rooms and a few tables set up against the railing. Unlike those smoky or dimly lit bars, the lighting inside was bright, and smoking was clearly prohibited. There was no smell of tobacco, and the atmosphere was completely free of the dark, oppressive ambiance mixed with various noises and strange odors.
Someone was already performing on stage, playing guitar and singing—it was probably a country folk song. The singer was a middle-aged white man with a full beard, wearing a cowboy hat and jeans. His voice was quite deep and magnetic. However, the song itself seemed rather ordinary; Chen Feng, for one, didn't really appreciate it.
The first floor was already about 70-80% full, with groups of three or five people. Judging from their clothes, appearance, and demeanor, these people were definitely different from the low-class patrons who were drowning their sorrows in alcohol. A few people were also seated at a few tables near the railing on the second floor. Chen Feng and his three companions entered and deliberately found two adjacent empty tables to sit at. The two bodyguards sat at another table, while Chen Feng and Luna sat at the same table.
Soon, the waiter came over with the wine list. Chen Feng asked Luna to order for him, and the two bodyguards naturally followed suit. In less than three minutes, the waiter brought over several glasses of wine.
“You should try it. The Margaret here is a bit different from other bars. I always order it every time I come here.” Luna said, picking up her glass, taking a small sip, her eyes narrowing, looking quite pleased, before taking another big gulp.
Seeing this, Chen Feng picked up his glass and took a sip. It was sweet and sour, and icy cold; it was indeed quite refreshing.
"How is it?" Luna asked expectantly.
Chen Feng immediately nodded: "That's right, this wine is indeed quite delicious."
Luna smiled and said, "My recommendation is definitely right. If you feel one glass isn't enough later, you can have another. Also, the martinis here are pretty good, but I've only had them once, and I usually only have two when I come here, which just meets the minimum spend of $30." "Then I'll order that again later, it tastes pretty good."
As the two were talking, someone came over and greeted Chen Feng with delight: "John, I never expected to see you here again. I think it must be God's arrangement. May I sit with you?"
Chen Feng looked up and saw Jones, a white woman with a surprised expression. Chen Feng was speechless; if she hadn't been following him, meeting her here was indeed quite a coincidence.
"Excuse me, my boyfriend and I don't want to be disturbed." Before Chen Feng could even respond, Luna, sitting opposite him, answered for him with a disgruntled expression.
Jones's smile froze when she saw Luna's unwelcoming attitude. However, she wisely refrained from arguing with Luna and instead continued looking at Chen Feng, saying, "John, you see, we really have a lot of luck to run into each other here. And it seems there aren't any empty seats anywhere else, so I'll just sit here."
Chen Feng stood up and said, "Alright, you and your friend can sit here. We'll sit over there."
It would be somewhat impolite to directly refuse someone's request to sit together, especially since this is a casual seating area, not a private room. If there are no empty seats, everyone will naturally sit together. Besides, as more people arrive later, other people will definitely come over and ask to sit down.
So Chen Feng stood up and led Luna to sit in the seats next to them, with their two bodyguards. Chen Feng and Luna sat on one side, and the two bodyguards sat on the other.
Chen Feng's attitude left Jones feeling somewhat disappointed and annoyed. Luna, however, was delighted, raising an eyebrow at Jones with a hint of provocation.
This caused an angry look to appear on Jones's face.
"Jones, let's sit here then," Adrian, who had been standing silently to the side, said, trying to smooth things over.
After a brief silence, Jones sat down.
A few minutes later, Jones and Adrian each held a glass of wine. They were now sitting side by side, opposite other patrons. There weren't many empty seats left.
Adrian asked in a low voice, "Are you very interested in this Asian man?"
Jones frowned slightly and said, "I told you before, he's a very good model prospect. My company has signed more than a dozen models so far, but none of them have made a name for themselves. In the end, we have to sell them to other modeling agencies. If we can sign this Asian man, I think he can make a name for himself, and our company can also have better development as a result."
Adrian frowned slightly and said, "Since none of the models you signed before have been successful, I think you shouldn't take any more risks. After all, you're not a professional modeling agency; your main business is advertising planning and shooting commercials."
A hint of displeasure flashed in Jones's eyes, and she said in a cool tone, "I told you before that I used to be a professional model agent and achieved some success. That's my original profession. Later, I only ended up in this industry because I inherited my late husband's company by chance. Besides, we are an advertising company. Instead of having to go out and find models every time we shoot an advertisement, it's more convenient and cheaper to train our own models."
Adrian noticed Jones's tone was off and immediately changed his attitude: "Alright, since this is your insistence, I will definitely support you. If there are any legal issues, you can come to me."
Adrian is a labor lawyer whose practice includes resolving labor disputes for companies and individuals, drafting employment contracts, and more. More importantly, he has a wonderful mother who is a prosecutor in Los Angeles.
So even though Jones looked down on this obese, bald, greasy middle-aged white man, she still maintained a friendship with him and would occasionally accept his invitations to have a meal together or go to a bar for a drink.
"Thank you," Jones said, raising her glass to him. They clinked glasses and took a sip, then began chatting about other things. They were about the same age, with similar educations and family backgrounds, so they had plenty to talk about. It was just a pity that Adrian wasn't very good-looking and wasn't her type at all.
Around 10:30, Luna received a message from Rebecca and excitedly told Chen Feng, "Rebecca will be on stage in a few minutes."
A few minutes later, the middle-aged white man who sang country folk songs left the stage. Then, a newly dressed Rebecca came on stage, along with several musicians who provided accompaniment: a drummer, a keyboardist, a bassist, and a guitarist.
On stage, Rebecca wore a bohemian floral dress, a large felt hat with lace trim, and a guitar slung across her body. The moment she stepped onto the stage, the spotlight shone on her, and the entire bar erupted in cheers. Many people applauded, whistled, and shouted Rebecca's name. Clearly, Rebecca was quite popular with the audience in this bar.
"Thank you, everyone. Today I've brought a new song, a pop folk song with a completely new style, 'The Rose of My Hometown,' and I hope you all like it."
After Rebecca finished speaking crisply, music began to play softly. Then Rebecca started playing the guitar. A moment later, she began to sing.
The lyrics are simple and easy to understand, and the singing is melodious and pleasant. Moreover, the style of this song is indeed different from typical folk pop, leaning more towards pop music. This song expresses a longing for one's hometown.
The song lasted about four minutes before ending, and the audience erupted in cheers. Chen Feng and Luna clapped along, with Luna shouting "Bravo!" loudly. Many other people in the audience, mostly men, were also cheering loudly.
After finishing one song, Rebecca sang her second. She continued singing three songs in a row before stopping to interact with the audience, telling corny jokes. Several fans presented her with flowers and took photos with her on stage. Several minutes passed like this, and after she had rested enough, she continued singing.
After three more songs, she paused again, drinking water while continuing to interact with the audience. During this time, people presented her with flowers, came up on stage to take photos, and asked for autographs. After this short break, Rebecca sang two more songs, then thanked everyone and left the stage, the whole thing lasting about an hour.
According to Luna, Rebecca earns three hundred dollars for this one-hour performance. Before, when she wasn't famous, she would perform for two hours or more to earn money. Of course, she could rest for about fifteen to twenty minutes each hour, mainly to protect her voice and interact with the audience. Even then, she only earned about two hundred dollars. Now she can earn three hundred dollars in just one hour—that's the power of fame.
Rebecca's performances are usually only an hour each time, occasionally two hours. She generally performs at least three nights a week, earning over nine hundred dollars a week. If she works hard and performs every night, her income would be quite substantial. Not to mention her income from her YouTube channel.
Even so, without a company signing her, releasing albums, and providing promotion and marketing, she still has a long way to go to become a true female singer. (End of Chapter)
