Around 2 p.m. that day, the family was still busy arranging orchids, lilies, and roses on the floor in front of the coffee table so that they could be photographed and would look beautiful. There were dozens of flowers as decorations.

For this Chinese New Year, my family bought over a dozen varieties of flowers and plants. This is what we kept; that's all we got. Some flowers were damaged during shipping—frozen or with bent stems—so we had to return them. The plants we kept include lucky bamboo, orchids, lilies, succulents, bromeliads, roses, and some other plants whose names we don't know. They were all bought for a few dollars. Online live-streaming platforms offer many flowers at prices lower than in florists, but the quality and appearance might be lower. High-quality, inexpensive items are rare; occasionally, there are limited-time offers that might have some good deals.

With so many fresh flowers and green plants in the house, some are placed on the countertops of cabinets on the balcony, some on the balcony floor, and some on top of the side table in the living room. The tabletops have been deliberately cleared out to hold fresh flowers, green plants, and a few other items.

Those flowers are not easy to grow. They need proper sunlight during the day and the curtains need to be drawn at night to prevent the temperature from getting too low. They need to be watered from time to time and nutrient solution needs to be added. The matching flower pots also need to be bought one after another.

My family enjoys admiring flowers and greenery for a month or two, though the expenses likely amount to several hundred or even a thousand yuan. In their small country abroad, they see wealthy people with mansions that not only have gardens and swimming pools, but also numerous interior spaces adorned with high-end fresh flowers, regularly changed, each time costing several thousand yuan. Monthly flower purchases and garden maintenance might amount to tens of thousands of yuan. This is the level of consumption for some wealthy people; other expenses are even higher, given the size of their houses and the various costs involved. Having seen so many flowers and plants, my family has gradually come to enjoy having flowers in their home, aspiring to the lifestyle of the wealthy.

That afternoon, the author was in his bedroom, having finished some major tasks. He didn't plan to continue working; it was almost Chinese New Year, and he needed to conserve his energy. He cooked, washed dishes, took a shower, got dressed, and watched the live broadcast of the New Year's Eve gala for a few hours.

I completed some of the basic tasks on several commonly used software programs, and some I didn't. The benefits of some software have been further downgraded; the time spent on tasks is no longer as much as before, so just do what you can.

Some people are lucky and always get generous rewards in certain activities. If they participate in the same activity but receive very little in return, it may reduce their enthusiasm for participation and decrease their attention.
