Chapter 468: Huajian Sect Wen Tingyun

He is a representative figure of Huajian poetry, came from a prominent family, and was a gentle and talented man.

But in his writing, there are delicate and rich emotions, as if they go straight into people's hearts.

He is the late Tang poet, Wen Tingyun, and also the founder of the Huajian School of Poetry.

Today, Wen Tingyun can be regarded as an expert in female psychology.

He paid attention to the psychological changes of each type of women and wrote sentimental lyrics for them personally.

It is certainly a blessing to receive a warm word, but it is also destined to be sad.

"Wen Tingyun, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, also known by his courtesy name Feiqing, was from Qiqi County, Taiyuan."

"Born in the aristocratic Wen family, his ancestors included Wen Yanbo, a famous prime minister in the early Tang Dynasty."

"By the end of the Tang Dynasty, the family had already fallen into decline."

"Perhaps a person's life must go through hardships before the most powerful energy can be unleashed. Perhaps the misfortunes of childhood and the frustrations of youth created such a genius who is good at writing gorgeous poems of women's grievances."

"Wen Tingyun lost his father at the age of 7 and lived with his mother along with his four sisters."

"When he was 12 years old, Duan Wenchang, a good friend of Wen Tingyun's father, was recruited from Yunnan to serve as the Minister of Justice."

"He lent a helping hand to the Wen family and took Wen Tingyun to Duling to study with his son Duan Chengshi."

"In the second year of the Baoli reign of Emperor Jingzong of the Tang Dynasty, 14-year-old Wen Tingyun and Duan Chengshi followed Duan Wenchang, who was stationed in Huainan, to the Jianghuai and Wuzhong areas."

"In the fourth year of Emperor Wenzong of the Tang Dynasty, the 18-year-old Wen Tingyun and Duan Chengshi followed Duan Wenchang, who was transferred to the Jingnan Jiedushi, to the Jingchu area."

"In the ninth year of Emperor Wenzong of Tang Dynasty, Duan Wenchang died in Xichuan."

"Not long after, Wen Tingyun, then 23 years old, bid farewell to Duan Chengshi and left Xichuan for Chang'an."

"In the third year of Emperor Wenzong's Kaicheng reign, Wen Tingyun seemed to have been in contact with Prince Zhuangke Li Yong, so he should have moved to Chang'an before that year."

"Wen Tingyun is extremely talented in examinations and is known as Wen Bacha."

"Although it sounds bad, it's actually a completely positive nickname."

"It was probably because the imperial examination for Jinshi in the Tang Dynasty required eight-rhyme fu, and Wen Tingyun was a man of great literary talent, so he wrote like a god during the examination."

"Each cross-hand can make a wonderful rhythmic poem. After eight cross-hands, you can complete the content required by the test and get the title."

"That's why Wen Tingyun was so arrogant when he was young that he didn't want to participate in the imperial examinations early."

"Perhaps he wants to take the imperial examination anytime he wants."

"Fame and honor are all within easy reach, and maybe even the top scholar position is not impossible to obtain."

"However, although Wen Tingyun was extremely talented, he failed to pass the examinations many times."

"After many years of traveling, I finally went to Jingzhao to take part in the first imperial examination in my life at the age of 27."

"But reality slapped this self-righteous Wen Feiqing hard in the face - he failed."

"Wen Tingyun failed in his first attempt at the imperial examination, but he was not discouraged."

"I made full preparations the following year and took part again, but I still failed."

Su Shi: Wen Tingyun was born with great talent but he messed up a good hand.

Wen Tingyun was a descendant of Wen Yanbo, the prime minister of the early Tang Dynasty. As for this relationship, they were already within the fifth degree of mourning.

As for his father, it is difficult to find any clues. All we know is that he died early, leaving his mother with several children.

He should have an older sister, a younger sister and a younger brother.

The details of his childhood studies and mischievous behavior are no longer available.

However, judging from his life-long confidant Li Shangyin, the two were probably about the same.

When Wen Tingyun was eighteen years old, he faced the same problem as contemporary students - the imperial examination.

He came to Chang'an from his hometown alone with a backpack, and took the exam the next year with great enthusiasm, but failed.

In a fit of anger, Wen Tingyun started traveling, and the places he traveled to were Shuzhong.

When passing by Mawei Posthouse, he was saddened by the tragic love between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Yang Guifei.

He recited Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" day and night, and finally composed the unique "Mawei Station".

Mu Man once traveled away from the world, and six dragons passed by here and stayed temporarily.

The returning soul has no proof and the green smoke disappears, the buried blood only gives rise to the green grass of sorrow.

The fragrant chariot returned to Changle Palace, and the morning bell rang again in Jingyang Tower.

We will never meet again in Ganquan, so who says Wencheng is the former marquis.

The Wencheng in the last sentence refers to General Wencheng who was conferred during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. After the death of Emperor Wu of Han's favorite concubine Wang, Emperor Wu missed her deeply.

At this time, a Taoist priest named Shao Weng said that he knew how to summon spirits.

So, a meeting was arranged between Emperor Wu and Wang in the dead of night.

Emperor Wu was very happy and appointed Shao Weng as General Wencheng.

Later, Shao Weng's magic spells gradually lost their effectiveness and Wang's spirit could not be summoned.

Emperor Wu then executed Shao Weng, and the title of General Wencheng was also abolished.

What Wen Tingyun meant was that even if there were alchemists like Wencheng now, the mistake had already been made and all efforts would be in vain.

Wen Tingyun was very worried about the chaos in the country caused by the Anshi Rebellion.

When passing Wuzhangyuan, he wrote an elegy for Zhuge Liang.

The iron horses and cloud eagles have been out of the dust for a long time, and the high pressure in Liuying is higher than that in Hanying in spring.

The sky is clear and murderous aura gathers at Guanyou, and in the middle of the night the evil star shines on Weibin.

The sleeping dragon in the lower country is unaware of the lord, and the fight for supremacy in the Central Plains is beyond the control of others.

There was no word spoken under the ivory bed and brocade curtains. From then on Qiao Zhou became an old minister.

In life, if you want to achieve great things, besides human efforts, it also depends on God's will.

Of course, the human role is also important.

After Zhuge Liang's death, surrenderists like Qiao Zhou became old ministers. The ruler was incompetent and the fate of the country was already doomed.

What Wen Tingyun meant was that although Kong Ming had the right master, he was not in the right time, and he himself was also not in the right time.

After experiencing the difficult road to Shu described by Li Bai, which was harder than climbing to the sky, we soon arrived in Lizhou.

At dusk, Wen Tingyun came to the southern ferry and looked at the merchants coming and going, with mixed feelings in his heart.

The empty water is facing the setting sun, and the winding island is connected to the vast green hills.

The horse on the waves neighs as it watches the oars go away, while the man rests by the willow trees waiting for the boat to return.

A flock of gulls scattered among a few clumps of sand grass, and a egret flew over the vast river fields.

Who understands how to take a boat to look for Fan Li, who has forgotten his ambitions alone in the misty waters of the five lakes?

I am only nineteen years old. It is too early to talk about retiring.

It's just in this occasional moment that I feel a little burdened by my dreams.

However, although dreams are tiring, they cannot be abandoned.

So what Wen Tingyun had to do next was to seek opportunities to enter the officialdom.

After returning to Chang'an, Wen Tingyun wanted to enter the official career through another method, that is, to make friends with the nobles.

Back then, Wang Wei became the top scholar because of a word from Princess Yuzhen.

People like Du Fu, who had no background, could only be depressed as low-ranking officials for their entire lives.

The person Wen Tingyun wanted to emulate was Wang Wei.

"In the following ten years, Wen Tingyun took the imperial examinations many times but failed to achieve the desired results."

“Until his death, he never achieved the fame and honor that he thought was within his grasp when he was young.”

"In fact, his failure in the imperial examinations for many years was closely related to Wen Tingyun's behavior and character."

"Wen Tingyun was unrestrained and untidy, and he liked to get drunk and visit prostitutes."

"Since he was ugly, people at that time called him Wen Zhongkui, saying that his appearance could ward off evil spirits and exorcise ghosts."

"This shows that Wen Tingyun, a brilliant poet, did not conform to the aesthetic standards of the time in terms of both character and appearance."

"In addition, Wen Tingyun's behavior is also hard to understand. He has offended people ranging from ordinary people to minor officials and even prime ministers and emperors. It can be said that it is quite explosive."

"When he was 23, Wen Tingyun went to Yangzhou to study and stayed at the home of a relative named Yao Xu."

"But Wen Tingyun only cared about eating, drinking and having fun, and spent all day in brothels with his drinking buddies. He had no interest in studying at all, and even spent all the gold and silver given by his relatives."

"Seeing that this young man was so unpromising, Yao Xu beat him hard on the buttocks with a wooden stick and kicked him out of the house."

"This incident made Wen Tingyun famous all over the world. People thought he was a frivolous scholar who didn't care about his appearance."

"Wen Tingyun was recommended by others and was able to enter the court of Prime Minister Linghu Tao."

"The emperor at that time, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, liked the tune of Bodhisattva Man very much, so he asked his ministers to present related works."

"Wen Tingyun responded to Linghu Tao's request and wrote as if possessed by a god. In a short time, he wrote fourteen poems of 'Bodhisattva Man'."

"After Tang Xuanzong saw this, he rewarded Linghu Chan generously."

"But maybe he drank too much one day or had a sudden illness, and he started to publicize the matter and made it known to everyone."

"Linghu Tao had no choice but to accept the matter, and was then despised by the prime minister."

"One day, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang traveled incognito and met a drunk Wen Tingyun in a hotel."

"I don't know if it was because Emperor Xuanzong's makeup skills were too good or because he was drunk, but Wen Tingyun didn't recognize the emperor."

"When the old gentleman saw Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who was surrounded by people, he was furious and asked in a casual manner if you were a senior official such as the Chief Secretary or the Sima."

"After hearing Xuanzong's answer, Wen Tingyun was full of disdain and ignored this bumpkin no longer."

Wang Anshi: the invincible gunman, the ugly genius, the friend of women - the life of Wen Tingyun.

When interacting with the sons of nobles, Pingkangfang naturally became a frequent destination.

Everyone gathered together to drink wine and listen to the singing girls playing the piano.

From then on, Wen Tingyun began to compose some new music and wrote many new lyrics.

In the Tang Dynasty, singing girls had a legitimate profession, but most of them were the wives of criminals who learned to play musical instruments and sing after losing their freedom.

Many singing girls were naturally reluctant, but it was not easy to leave the music industry.

Therefore, Wen Tingyun's poems became a ray of light that illuminated their lives, and they found comfort from them.

However, Wen Tingyun, who comforted them, brought bad luck because of this.

Because of his indulgent and careless nature, he has a very bad reputation among senior officials.

As a result, he failed the imperial examinations for many years. Because of repeated failures, Wen Tingyun became discouraged and started traveling again.

This time the target was the land of Wu and Yue, which was consistent with the basic route of the wandering poets of the same period.

In the third year of Huichang, the 32-year-old Wen Tingyun ended his journey and returned to Chang'an.

He lived in Huxian County on the outskirts of Chang'an, waiting for his opportunity again.

When I have nothing to do, I also write some pastoral poems.

In October of the following year, Emperor Wuzong of Tang came to Huxian for hunting.

Wen Tingyun took the opportunity to write another poem to praise the emperor, but the emperor did not take it seriously at all.

Seeing no other options, Wen Tingyun could only live a part-time work and study life, hoping to enter an official career through the imperial examination.

It did not attract the emperor's attention, but instead brought news of the emperor's death - Wuzong died of elixir poisoning.

Then, Xuanzong succeeded to the throne. He liked lyrics and music, and especially loved to sing "Bodhisattva Man".

Wen Tingyun then wrote several poems of "Bodhisattva Man" in succession and passed them to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang through Linghu Chao.

Among them is probably the classic "Overlapping Hills with Fading Gold".

The hills overlap and the golden light fades away, and the clouds on the temples want to burn the snow on their cheeks.

Lazy to draw eyebrows, make up and freshen up late.

The front and rear mirrors of the flowers reflect each other.

A new embroidered silk blouse with two golden partridges.

The overlapping hills are said to be pillows, some say they are buns, and more say they refer to the painting on the screen.

The flickering gold may be the spots of light from the sun shining through the screen.

Then, he turned from the screen to the bed. The hostess was sleeping soundly, her hair about to cover her face.

After a while, she lazily got up, washed, and drew her eyebrows, looking at herself from front and back in the mirror.

The face in the mirror and the beauty in reality complemented each other. Two large golden partridges were embroidered on her new silk blouse.

Why two? Because I fantasize about flying with my beloved!

Wen Tingyun's poem cannot be summed up in just one word: wonderful.

When Linghu Tao wrote this poem to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, he was very happy. Wen Tingyun also wanted to take this opportunity to smoothly enter the official career.

However, he was arrogant because of his talent and criticized Linghu Shao for being illiterate and plagiarizing his works.

Although Linghu Chao agreed to recommend Wen Tingyun, he said that Wen Tingyun was a self-indulgent person and was not fit for important positions.

Therefore, his identity could only be that of a poet.

Wen Tingyun offended Prime Minister Linghu Tao, and later by chance he offended Emperor Xuanzong, and his future was completely over.

He continued to take exams, but failed repeatedly, so he simply started helping others cheat.

And all the students who received his help passed the imperial examination and became Jinshi without exception.

Wen Tingyun felt it was ironic, but wasn't this the best recognition of his own talent?
As a result, many people rushed to him to buy his articles, and Teacher Wen earned some living expenses.

"After many unsuccessful attempts at imperial examinations, Wen Tingyun seemed to have turned on a switch and started helping others cheat."

"If I don't do well in the exam, let someone else pass it. A talented shooter was born."

"No matter how difficult the test questions were or how strict the invigilator was, Wen Tingyun always found a way to help others cheat successfully."

"Besides, he never charges any fee for being a ghostwriter. If he likes you, he will help you pass the exam in a matter of minutes."

"The most impressive event for later generations was the expedition in the ninth year of Dazhong, that is, in 855 AD."

"At that time, Shen Xun, the Minister of Beishan, was the chief examiner. In order to prevent cheating from happening again, he focused his defense on Wen Tingyun."

"Because judging from the records of violations in the examination halls over the years, Wen Tingyun is a well-known gunman."

"As long as this person is well managed, I don't think there will be any major problems with others."

"So, Shen Xun specially set up a seat for Wen Tingyun in front of him."

"I kept a distance from the other candidates and vowed to keep a close eye on this undisciplined candidate."

"The exam started the next day, and there didn't seem to be anything unusual in the exam room."

"Wen Tingyun felt unwell and handed in his paper early."

"Shen Xun looked and found that he had still submitted an article of a thousand words."

"But what Shen Xun didn't expect was that Wen Tingyun quietly told others outside the examination room that he had saved eight people in this exam."

"In one exam, eight people took the exam for him. His skills as a gunman at the exam site were amazing."

"In the seventh year of Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty, Wen Tingyun served in the Imperial College in Chang'an."

"Wen Tingyun, who had never passed the imperial examination in his life, unexpectedly became an examiner. This might be because he had failed the imperial examination for many years, or it might be because his ambition to serve his country was still surging."

"The essays selected by Wen Tingyun were all critical of current affairs and satirical of the ugliness of the officialdom in society at that time."

"This angered Prime Minister Yang Shou, and he was demoted to the rank of Fangcheng Wei."

"After years of wandering and being frustrated throughout his life, Wen Tingyun died shortly after being demoted at the age of 54."

"The extremely talented Wen Tingyun was proficient in music and poetry."

"His poetry is as famous as Li Shangyin's, and they are called Wen Li at the time."

"His poems are ornate, gorgeous and exquisite, and the content is mostly about love affairs."

"His poems were even more meticulous, with an emphasis on literary talent and voice, and his achievements surpassed those of the late Tang dynasty poets, making him the foremost poet of the Huajian School."

"He is revered as the founder of the Huajian School and has had a great influence on the development of Ci."

"In the history of ci poetry, he is as famous as Wei Zhuang and is also called Wen Wei."

"His literary style is as famous as that of Li Shangyin and Duan Chengshi. All three are ranked sixteenth, so they are collectively known as the Thirty-Six Styles."

Xin Qiji: Wen Tingyun was a man of quick wit, but he failed the imperial examinations repeatedly, and was depressed and frustrated throughout his life.

As the saying goes, if you often walk by the river, how can you not get your shoes wet?
In March of the ninth year of Dazhong, an examination for Boxue Hongci was held, and the examination questions were leaked in advance.

So, some students came to Teacher Wen with their college entrance examination questions and asked him for help, and Teacher Wen was naturally happy to help.

Immediately afterwards, the Censorate impeached the chief examiner and others, and the emperor ordered the chief examiner Tang Zhi to be demoted to the governor of Chuzhou.

The admission of all ten candidates was disqualified, and the ghostwriter Wen Tingyun was demoted to the position of Sui County Lieutenant.

In fact, it was this ghostwriting that made many senior central officials see Wen Tingyun's talent.

Pei Tan accepted the advice of his subordinates, and Wen Tingyun became a ninth-rank minor official and soon went to Sui County to take up his post.

In late autumn, Wen Tingyun passed through Shangluo, Shaanxi, and wrote "Early Morning Walk in Shangshan".

In the morning, we set out to recruit Duo, and we were saddened by our journey to our hometown.

Cocks crow in the thatched tavern under the moon, and human footprints are seen on the frosty wooden bridge.

Oak leaves fall on the mountain road, and citrus flowers brighten the post station wall.

Thinking of the dream in Duling, the pond is filled with ducks and geese.

I set out as soon as I get up in the morning, and when it is late autumn, I miss my hometown even more.

Perhaps, the days of being busy with one's career in Chang'an weakened the desire to return home.

The crowing of chickens, the moon shining on the thatched tavern, and the frost on the wooden bridge with footprints, this simple combination of scenery brings an all-round impact to people.

The pale white citron flowers bloomed outside the corner of the post station. Apart from the poet, who else would pay attention to them?

The mountain road ahead of him was covered with oak leaves.

Oak is a deciduous tree that grows in large areas in Shangshan. It has the function of improving the ecology and its fruit can be used as medicine.

Coincidentally, I am from Shangluo and know this very well.

This tree is called birch oak in rural areas. Its fibers are very hard and can be used as purlins, but most of the time it is used directly as firewood.

Wen Tingyun may not know too much, but the joy he felt in his dream clearly expressed his inner thoughts.

Wen Tingyun was originally going to be appointed as a county lieutenant in Sui County, but because he was appreciated by Xu Shang, the governor of Shannan East Road, he was retained as an inspector.

Wen Tingyun and Xu Shang had known each other before, and he was very grateful for his help and worked diligently as his aide.

At this time, he was working with his younger brother Tinghao and later his relative-in-law Duan Chengshi.

Because of this kind of communication, the following thirty-six styles came into being.

Xu Shang was appointed prime minister. As a former guest and host, he was well aware of Wen Tingyun's talents and virtues, so he recommended him to be an assistant teacher at the Imperial College.

The red steps and high pavilion are calm and composed, and the jade-girl bell heralds the dawn at the window.

The sun shines on the Nine Gates, the doors are locked; the rain clears, the Double Towers are on the Cuiwei Peak.

The dew from the brush tip nourishes the fairy grass, and the fragrant breeze from the zither penetrates the forbidden pine trees.

Xun Ling Fengchi Chun is gentle and kind, so he can turn the remaining moisture into fish and dragons.

It can be seen that he is in a very good mood. It seems that this time, after going through so many twists and turns, there is finally a way out.

But soon, when Teacher Wen was the chief examiner of the autumn examination, he was demoted because he was too upright.

To put it bluntly, the articles written by children of aristocrats and those written by common students are treated equally.

This is certainly a good thing, but it will inevitably cause dissatisfaction among the nobles who failed the exam.

So the ugly incident of Teacher Wen being beaten while drunk in Chang'an City was dug up again.

In October, Wen Tingyun was demoted to the position of magistrate of Fangcheng County.

Friends in the capital all wrote poems to give to each other, and Wen Tingyun wrote one called "Qingpingle".

Luoyang is filled with sorrow, and the willow trees are covered with snow.

All day long, people climb and break the bridge, and the water under the bridge sobs.

Mounting the horse, I urge you to drink, but the sound of the orioles at South Bank is heartbreaking.

The young man in Pingyuan is worried and sheds tears looking back.

Replacing Chang'an with Luoyang should be a change of location.

If I write about Chang'an directly, it seems too straightforward and not like Wen Tingyun's style.

Amidst everyone's farewell poems, he left in despair and soon died of illness on the way.

His younger brother transported his remains back to Hu County for burial, and he was among the guests who came to pay their respects.

In addition to his lifelong friends and students, there should also be a group of beautiful singing girls who were heartbroken upon hearing about his death. (End of this chapter)
