Chapter 64 The truth comes out
Chapter 64 The truth comes out
"Sirius! You traitor!" The usually gentle Lupin's eyes turned red, like a mad beast. He drew out his wand and was about to cast the Unforgivable Curse.
Weiss was quick-witted and quick-handed, and cast a disarming spell to knock Lupin's wand away.
Seeing that the angry Lupin was about to transform into a werewolf, Dumbledore spoke in time to stop him.
"Calm down, Lupin. I think Weiss will give us a reasonable explanation."
Dumbledore's words were still very effective, and Lupin gradually calmed down. Despite this, he still stared at Sirius closely, fearing that he would run away.
Weiss recounted the whole story in detail and opened the Marauder's Map, on which Peter Pettigrew's name was clearly written.
As one of the map's creators, Lupin knew what this meant.
"Why is Pettigrew still alive? And why is he at Hogwarts?"
Sirius stepped forward, looked at Lupin in disbelief and said, "I can explain all this."
He told everyone present about the decision to replace the Secret-Keeper with Pettigrew.
He thought it was a smart move at the time, but he didn't expect Pettigrew to betray them and leak the information to Voldemort.
"How could this happen?" Lupin couldn't believe that his former friend had suffered such great misunderstanding and pain.
"I didn't lie. You can use truth serum or check my memory. I didn't betray James. I'm not a traitor." Sirius said almost pleadingly. He would accept any test. At this moment, he was extremely eager to gain everyone's trust.
Lupin held Sirius's shoulders tightly. "Why didn't you defend yourself? Why didn't you tell the truth?"
"James and Lily were dead, Voldemort's whereabouts were unknown, and Pettigrew was 'dead' too. Only I, a self-righteous person, was still alive." Sirius lowered his head, filled with self-blame and guilt. He continued, "I went to Azkaban voluntarily. I am atonement for my sins."
Sirius' words caused everyone present to fall into silence.
"Black..." Lupin's voice trembled a little. He believed in Sirius, and he had always suspected Sirius' betrayal.
Lupin hugged Sirius tightly. Sirius raised his head and asked Lupin: "Do you believe me?"
"of course."
Just as a smile was about to break out on Sirius's face, Lupin's right fist suddenly hit him in the cheek, and Sirius fell heavily to the ground.
He struggled to get up, his face covered in blood, and looked at Lupin in pain.
"You are the most selfish and stupid person in the world!" Tears streamed down Lupin's face, and he growled at Sirius in pain.
Sirius smiled, a smile so bright, even though his face was covered with nosebleeds and looked a little creepy.
There was a sense of relief in his laughter, as if at this moment, he had finally found some kind of liberation.
After their nosebleeds stopped, the four of them gathered around the desk. Four pairs of eyes, like four piercing rays of light, fixed their gaze on the name of Peter Pettigrew on the Marauder's Map. That name captivated their attention, for it held all the answers.
"Just catch this traitor and force him to tell the truth about what happened back then." Lupin's eyes were burning with anger. He wished he could catch Peter Pettigrew immediately and make him pay the price for his crimes.
Sirius clenched his fists tightly, suppressing the anger in his heart. Although he appeared calm on the outside, all the injustice and pain he had suffered over the years turned into hatred for Peter Pettigrew.
Weiss agreed very much with Lupin's opinion. In his opinion, with him and Dumbledore taking action, there was no need to worry about Peter Pettigrew escaping.
To avoid any further delays, Weiss proposed immediate action, which was unanimously agreed upon by everyone. With the Marauder's Map, everything became very simple.
Scabbers, or Peter Pettigrew, has been living in fear and trepidation lately.
The news of Sirius's escape from prison scared him half to death. He was shrouded in fear and his intuition told him that Sirius was coming for him.
[Damn it, where did I give myself away, letting that damn dog know I was still alive?] A mouse was hiding in the corner of the school, peeking out, its head constantly turning, vigilantly observing its surroundings.
[And that stupid cat...]
"Meow~" The cat's cry was like a thunder, which scared Peter Pettigrew so much that he trembled all over and ran away.
Crookshanks purposefully drove Peter Pettigrew in one direction. While fleeing, Peter Pettigrew did not notice that there were fewer and fewer people around him. He did not have time to think and only wanted to get rid of the cat as soon as possible.
It wasn't until he was driven into a deserted corridor that Peter Pettigrew realized that the situation was not good.
At this moment, with a "Woof~" sound, a big dog suddenly appeared in front of him.
Pettigrew looked at the big dog in front of him and screamed in fear: "Sirius!!!"
The next moment, his mind went blank, and then he passed out. It turned out that Weiss's stun spell hit him accurately, and the timing was perfect.
Sirius growled softly, and was about to pounce on Peter Pettigrew and tear him into pieces to vent his hatred.
Weiss stopped him in time: "If he dies, your crime will never be cleared. Don't you want to live with Harry?"
This sentence hit Sirius hard and made him calm down instantly.
Wes put Peter Pettigrew into a cage that had been prepared long ago, and the man, the cat, and the dog returned to the principal's office.
Anxious, Lupin took the cage and carefully examined the mouse inside. After a moment, he kept muttering, "It's him, it's him!!"
The four marauders were very familiar with each other's Animagus forms, and the rat also had a broken finger on its right paw, which further confirmed his identity.
Sirius also returned to his human form. He grabbed Peter Pettigrew from the cage and threw him to the ground roughly.
Peter Pettigrew fell heavily to the ground with a dull thud. He still hadn't woken up due to the dizziness spell cast by Wes.
Lupin pushed Sirius away and took out his wand: "Crucio!!" and hit the mouse on the ground. It is said that once an honest person gets angry, he is really scary.
Dumbledore wiped his glasses as if he saw nothing.
Peter Pettigrew began to twitch constantly, and the great pain made his body twisted constantly. Lupin was not going to let him go easily. He picked up the wand again and prepared to start the second round of attack.
"That's enough, Lupin!" Dumbledore finally said, "We need him to wake up so that we can figure everything out."
Peter Pettigrew began to squeak in pain. The Cruciatus Curse was too powerful and he could no longer maintain his Animagus form.
I saw a palm-sized rat begin to swell up, and soon turned into a short, chubby, greasy middle-aged man with sparse hair. The squeaking turned into the wailing of a human.
