Chapter 19 Happiness in Xiniu Hezhou, Hell on Earth in the East!
A great Zen master from the Great Jin Dynasty of the Eastern Lands has arrived at Jinhai Temple!
The news spread like wildfire throughout Jinhai Temple, attracting many monks to come and see this rare sight.
It is true that Wuxing Mountain is located at the junction of Xiniuhezhou and Nanzhanbuzhou.
However, as is well known, the Eastern Kingdom, where Jambudvipa is located, revered Confucianism and Taoism, and had few orthodox Buddhist sects, thus failing to receive the true transmission of Buddhist teachings.
Therefore, when everyone heard that a great Zen master from Jambudvipa had come to stay at Jinhai Temple, they were all extremely curious and wanted to see how this monk from the Great Jin Dynasty in the East was different from the Buddhist disciples in Niuhezhou.
This monk, in particular, from the Great Jin Dynasty in the East, had an arrogant Buddhist name: "Fahai".
This made the high monks at Jinhai Temple even more resentful.
Everyone wanted to have a debate with the monk Fahai, so that this monk from the Great Jin Dynasty in the East would know what true Buddhism is.
Or rather, the monks of Xiniu Hezhou inherently look down on monks from other places.
They believed that their own practice was the authentic Mahayana Buddhism, unlike monks in other places who mostly practiced Hinayana Buddhist scriptures and did not receive the true transmission of the Dharma.
"Tsk tsk, I didn't expect even monks to be regionally discriminatory!"
Niu Jun could not possibly miss the attitude of the monks at Jinhai Temple.
This made him find it very funny.
This is because, apart from the abbot and the head of the Arhat Hall, the hundreds of monks in Jinhai Temple are all ordinary people who have not cultivated any magical powers.
Where do these ordinary people who haven't even cultivated any magical power get the courage to act superior and show off their superiority in front of a great mage who has cultivated magical power?
Don't they ever consider that a monk who can travel alone from Jambudvipa to Aparagodaniya safely, ignoring the threats of demons, monsters, strongmen, and wild beasts along the way, can be an ordinary monk?
You may doubt the Buddhist practice of Zen Master Fahai, but you absolutely cannot doubt his profound magical powers.
"But this is normal."
"After all, even the Buddha said that the people of Jambudvipa are greedy, murderous, lustful, deceitful, and commit many evils. They are ignorant and difficult to teach, and should be condemned to eternal darkness."
"So it would be strange if the monks of Xiniuhezhou didn't view Nanzhanbuzhou with prejudice."
"This is just like the countries in my past life. Which one of them didn't promote its own country as safe, stable, prosperous, and powerful, while the people abroad were living in dire straits?"
Thinking about this, Niu Jun suddenly understood where the monks of Jinhai Temple got their sense of superiority from.
In the original Journey to the West, when Tang Sanzang and his disciples arrived at Mount Ling to seek the Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha made an evaluation of Jambudvipa, saying:
"Your Eastern Land is the Southern Jambudvipa, but because the sky is high and the earth is thick, and the resources are abundant and the people are numerous, there is much greed and killing, much lust and deceit, much cheating and fraud; they do not follow Buddhism, do not seek good karma, do not respect the three lights (sun, moon, and stars), and do not value the five grains; they are disloyal and unfilial, unjust and unkind, they deceive themselves and others, they use large measures and small scales, they kill and murder animals, they have committed boundless sins, their sins are overflowing and their evil is full, which leads to the calamity of hell."
Therefore, they are forever condemned to the netherworld, suffering the torment of being pounded and ground, and transformed into animals.
There are many creatures with fur and horns that repay their debts by giving their bodies and feeding people with their flesh. They are destined to be reborn in the Avici Hell and cannot be reborn. This is the reason for all of this.
Although Confucius established the teachings of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom there, and emperors succeeded him, with punishments such as exile and execution, what could be done against the ignorant, unruly, and unrestrained?
From these words, we can see the attitude and views of the Buddha and the Buddhist community of Mount Sumeru towards the people of Jambudvipa in the East.
In the eyes of the Buddha and the gods and Buddhas of Mount Ling, the people of Jambudvipa in the East were not only living in dire straits, but were living in a living hell, from which they could never escape.
Even Buddha Shakyamuni said so.
How could the lower-ranking monks of Xiniu Hezhou not believe it?
Let's look at how the Buddha evaluated the other three continents. Regarding Uttarakuru, the Buddha commented: "Those who live in Uttarakuru, though fond of killing, do so only to make a living. They are simple-minded and unassuming, and do not commit many atrocities!"
The evaluation of Dongsheng Shenzhou is: "Respect Heaven and Earth, with a clear mind and peaceful spirit!"
Finally, there is an evaluation of Xiniu Hezhou: "The people of Xiniu Hezhou are neither greedy nor murderous, they cultivate their vital energy and nurture their spirits. Although there are no supreme immortals, everyone enjoys longevity."
From the Buddha's evaluation of the four continents of the Immortal Realm, we can understand the attitude and propaganda strategy of the Lingshan Buddhist sect towards Jambudvipa (Southern Continent).
Dongsheng Shenzhou is impossible to criticize, so I will not comment on it.
The beings of Beiju Luzhou are poor and backward. In order to make a living, they have to kill living beings. Moreover, they are all gluttonous, lazy, clumsy, and indifferent, so they do not pose much of a threat.
The most despicable is Jambudvipa in the east.
The people of Jambudvipa in the East are greedy, murderous, lewd, deceitful, and fraudulent. They do not follow Buddhism, do not seek good karma, do not respect the three luminaries (sun, moon, and stars), do not value the five grains, are disloyal and unfilial, unjust and unkind, deceive themselves, use large measures and small scales, kill animals, and commit boundless sins. Their sins are overflowing and their evil is at its peak, so they should be eternally condemned to the underworld and never be reborn.
Finally, there is Xiniuhezhou, where the Buddhist sacred mountain is located. It is definitely the happiest of the four continents in the Earthly Immortal Realm.
The people living in Xiniu Hezhou are neither greedy nor murderous, they cultivate their inner energy and nurture their spirits. Although there are no supreme immortals, everyone enjoys longevity and extreme happiness.
As for why demons and monsters roamed Xiniu Hezhou, eating people everywhere, and why the three demons of Lion Camel Ridge ate all the people in the city, leading to the terrifying scene of the city being full of monsters later on.
According to the original description: Skulls piled up like mountains, bones formed a forest. Human hair turned into felt, human flesh rotted into mud and dust. Human tendons were wrapped around trees, dry and gleaming like silver. It was truly a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, indeed reeking of foul stench. To the east, lesser demons captured living people and butchered them; to the west, wicked monsters boiled and cooked human flesh fresh.
This is what the Buddha said to the Garuda: "I govern the four continents, and countless beings look up to me. Whenever someone does a good deed, I teach them to first offer it to you!"
The underlying meaning is that the people you are eating all deserve their fate, and if someone does good deeds, I will give you priority to eat them so that they will not suffer in the world.
As the saying goes: If you do good deeds, the monsters will eat you. This is for your own good, so that you won't suffer any longer. They hope you can be reborn into a better life or go directly to the Western Paradise.
This is probably why the people of Xiniu Hezhou "have no supreme beings".
Because of this Buddhist concept, everyone is cultivating for the next life. If they really want to achieve immortality, how can they be reborn as soon as possible and go to the Western Paradise?
On the contrary, the demons of Xiniu Hezhou felt that life there was too blissful, and that a mere thousand or eight hundred years was not enough to enjoy it. So they all desperately wanted to eat Tang Sanzang's flesh and achieve immortality.
"so."
Is there any possibility?
"In the eyes of Buddha, only beings who cultivate themselves to become immortals are considered 'humans'. Those who do not become immortals are not considered human at all, and are no different from chickens, ducks, fish, wild beasts, or ants?"
Niu Jun couldn't help but ponder, feeling that the Buddhist concepts in this world were too crazy, completely challenging his values.
What left him speechless was...
The monks of Xiniu Hezhou still firmly believed in the views of the Lingshan Buddhist sect, and each of them was filled with a sense of superiority. They felt that they had practiced Mahayana Buddhist scriptures and looked down on the Buddhist monks of other continents.
Really crazy!
