Cyberpunk: From Dogville to Legend
Chapter 11, Lesson 1 of Night City [Chapter Reset]
Chapter 11 The First Lesson in Night City [Reset Chapter]
"Now you know what's going on?!"
Lin Yue roared.
Mann's brain snapped, and he immediately realized that this was all a setup.
"Dorio! We're going to take down the Ghost Hound along with it!"
The two were separated by a thin wall, and their shouts were crystal clear to each other.
The bullets from Lin Yue's pistol had no effect on the bulletproof drone. He quickly stepped back, picked up his sniper rifle, and pulled the trigger amidst the dense line of fire.
The cat's incredibly penetrating attack caused the drone to crash to the ground, igniting a burst of flames.
"Good fight!"
Mann chuckled and praised Lin Yue for dealing with the troublesome drone, then kept calling his teammates to retreat through the communication system.
Lin Yue: Good for you!
"You idiot, your boss sold you out. How do you feel about that?"
Lin Yue pursed his lips and did not answer Mann; at that moment, his heart rate soared.
He quickly put the gun away and ran in the opposite direction without looking back.
Now it's not a question of whether or not to keep Mann's squad; he himself is in dire straits.
what's the situation?
[Calling: Mr. Hanz]
No one answered
In the darkness, Lin Yue's eyes kept flashing the red light from the phone call. He sorted through everything in his mind: Hanz had asked the middleman in Dogtown to let him investigate, and he was ordered to stop the cyberpunks who wanted to investigate this shipment from Dogtown...
What went wrong?
and many more!
The question Mr. Hanz asked with a smile resounded in Lin Yue's mind like a muffled thunderclap.
"You know her?"
Is it Sasha? Lin Yue thought he had no flaws, so why was Hanz so sure that he knew this team?
His heart sank to the bottom. Although he didn't know why the military-grade hackers had taken down the hamster, one thing was certain:
This is the company's murky water; it's the bait. Once the bait is in the water, big fish and small fish alike fight over it, creating a life-or-death struggle—ultimately, the company is also turned into a murky mess.
There was no answer on the other end of the phone, and Lin Yue finally understood what that sentence meant.
In Night City, there has never been any trust.
His arrogance stemmed from his belief that he knew Mr. Hans well, and Lin Yue even considered himself a "player" on par with Hans.
There are many mercenaries in Night City who die at the hands of middlemen.
This is the bloody reality.
"Damn it, are you kidding me?"
Lin Yue turned his head and glanced at the Heartfelt Club behind him, at the green laser beam shooting into the sky. He really wanted to throw that gun at Hanz's face and then pull out his own pistol and fire a few shots at him.
But reason always prevailed in Lin Yue's mind. He gritted his teeth, clenched his fists, and continued to run as fast as he could.
All he knew was that if he stopped, he would face the worst possible outcome!
From the beginning until now, he has been so focused on improving the panel's capabilities that he has forgotten that this world operates on the dark side, and that no force can predict the human heart.
What the hell is this reward? Staying alive is more important than anything else.
Lin Yue believed he had done everything he could for Mann's team.
Unbeknownst to them, several more people were running frantically in the same direction in the distance.
Lin Yue was so angry that he laughed. Individual heroism might prevail in a struggle, but it is based on extremely strong abilities.
Now, instead of waking them up, it was the Netherhounds that brought them to their senses. They're all idiots!
Lin Yue didn't care, quickly climbed over a building in Dog Town, and slid down the iron support next to it.
His target was the area on the right side of Dogtown where the Voodoo Gang often gathered. It was located on a mountaintop, leading to other parts of Dogtown. The gang would also cause chaos in that area because of the Ghost Hounds. Lin Yue's goal was to escape during the chaos and lie low for the time being.
On the other side, Mann and his group also ran wildly in the direction of retreat. Abandoning their vehicles and running away was a last resort, as the Dogtown highways were now full of ghost hounds.
"What did Sasha say?"
Dorio asked in a deep voice.
Rebecca turned and fired, momentarily halting a drone, then immediately turned back and continued running. "Mann, what about the middleman?"
Mann shook his head. "Can't get in touch. That kid was used as a shield by the Ghost Hound. Sasha said they've gotten involved with Arasaka in military technology—"
"Most likely, they're going to shut down our entire line."
"The data is fake. Arasaka's hackers are stealing the data. Nobody can touch it."
Pila yelled, "The drone's biting us! Damn! I told you I should have stayed home and worked on my new research!"
"Stop yelling, you bastard!" Rebecca fired a shot to stop the drone for him, cursing her cheap brother incessantly.
Rebecca also noticed the young man who had fallen from the unfinished building in the distance, and his expression seemed somewhat strange.
Although the guy didn't know why he could call out his name, everyone had indeed fallen into a quagmire on this trip. Mann hadn't expected that this job would involve Night City's behemoth—the company.
The middleman said that a client wanted to set up a dog town to annoy them, and that it was a high-priced job, so everyone took the job.
After all, no one would be unwilling to eat it for half a year.
"Ahem, this is Colonel Kurt Hansen."
The broadcasting devices that could be seen everywhere in Dogtown started up, and Hansen's voice echoed in every corner of Dogtown.
"Dogtown is our home, and we need to arm ourselves to resist oppression!"
"But now, those damn military technologies and Arasaka want us to lay down our weapons and obediently listen to them!"
"There is no room for compromise here..."
"Residents of Dogtown, pick up your weapons and wipe out these scum who have invaded our paradise!"
"I, Kurt Hansen, swear here and now: I will protect the rights of every resident of Dogtown! To hell with those corporate bastards!"
"The company has violated our rights. I will let everyone in Night City know what the company is really like!"
What a clever way to shift the blame.
Lin Yue now knows what Kurt Hansen is up to!
In short, Dogtown's interests were harmed, and blame was being dumped on the company, making them want to fight back.
Before his transmigration, Lin Yue couldn't understand why Dogtown was so firmly established in Night City and no one dared to touch it.
Even the New America and Night City officials have not commented on it.
Logically speaking, Night City's military technology, Arasaka, Contau, etc., should be able to directly confront it—and even New America should be able to combine military technology to raze this private city to the ground!
But this did not happen; instead, a real-life version of "throwing a stone at a rat for fear of breaking it" is unfolding.
No matter which company makes the first move, there will always be someone watching behind the scenes looking for loopholes and opportunities for profit.
When the snipe and the clam fight, the fisherman benefits; whoever strikes first suffers the loss.
Not only that, the company also needs to stay away from this plague. Hansen is more than happy for the company to fight each other, so he can watch the tigers fight from the sidelines.
Not to mention that Hansen is backed by a Cuban pharmaceutical conglomerate: every time a cigar is lit in Havana, someone in the world loses their life. (Note: The pharmaceutical aspect is euphemistically stated, and this should not be discussed in book reviews; it's background information, please view it rationally.)
Lin Yue immediately understood why Hansen was able to live so comfortably in Night City.
Lin Yue's clearest understanding of this world was only during the period from 2076 to 2077, and that was based on a few legendary stories. How this world would develop, and whether it would continue as he perceived it, was all unknown.
The lessons at Night City were unbearable and completely jolted Lin Yue, who had been lost and confused all along, back to reality!
