Doomsday America

Chapter 16 That guy is not bad.
Gavin caught the keys and tossed them directly to Madison.
Madison took the keys and walked towards William and his companion's old Ford, opened the door and quickly began rummaging through the wreckage.
About thirty seconds later, he came back with an 8x scope and a short shotgun, his pockets full of shotgun bullets.
"Gavin, an unexpected bonus."
He then spoke to Gavin while holding the short spray bottle.
"He also had a Winchester M1887, the same lever-action shotgun the governor used, in his car. It was incredibly cool!"
"Is that so? That's why you came back so late?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin picked up the 8x scope, weighed it in his hand, and shook his head.
"If you had come any later, you wouldn't have needed this thing."
As he spoke, Gavin picked up his 8x scope and, using the moonlight and the dim streetlights, looked at the figures in the distance.
The figure moved much closer to them and became quite clearer.
But what Gavin wanted to see was whether there were more people behind him.
Having confirmed that the staggering figure on the road was alone, Gavin exhaled, then hung the 8x scope on his belt and turned around to say something.
"There's only one zombie, dressed in a gas station uniform. The clerk came to collect payment from us, buddy."
"Really? Then we really need to negotiate the price with him."
Madison responded with a laugh, while simultaneously cocking the governor's gun and pointing it at Eugene on the ground.
William, who was standing to the side, was in a daze and completely immersed in grief. Eugene, who was quite drunk, noticed Gavin's words and quickly asked.
"You're saying those figures over there are fucking zombies? Is that some kind of metaphor, or are you fucking making fun of me for crashing into the film crew?"
"hehe."
Gavin didn't answer Eugene's question. Instead, he went to Madison's side, patted him on the shoulder, and said...
"Keep an eye on them, I'll go take care of this."
"Just yourself?"
"Is there a problem? We'll have to get used to dealing with zombies sooner or later. Since there's only one zombie, we should definitely practice on it."
"Besides, I'm too lazy to explain the details to them, so I might as well give them a visual shock."
After saying this, Gavin put Colt back in its holster, went back into the store, and picked up his military knife.
Gavin got into the car with his military knife and drove while keeping a close eye on the distance between himself and the zombies.
At that moment, his car was about 600 meters away from the lone zombie.
As the car continued to move forward, Gavin kept his eyes fixed on the zombies on the road until he was only 140 meters away from them.
Gavin discovered that the zombie, which had been jogging slowly, suddenly transformed into a 100-meter sprinter!
"The sound of a regular engine can attract zombies at a distance of about 140 meters."
After muttering something, Gavin stopped the car, got out with his knife, and waited for the zombies to approach.
As the zombie drew closer, Gavin jogged a few steps, caught up, and, finding the right distance, slashed the zombie's shoulder with his knife.
He was so strong that the zombie that was about to pounce and bite him was knocked to the ground by the blow.
Before the zombie could even get up, Gavin's knife came crashing down, severing the zombie's head in one blow.
Even after its head was chopped off, the zombie employee, like Gigi, kept opening its mouth and roaring.
Gavin spat, bent down, grabbed the shop assistant by the hair, and dragged him back to the car by the head.
To avoid contaminating the car interior with bloodstains, he hung his head out of the car window and carried it back to Eugene and the other man.
William was still a little stunned, while Eugene let out a shocked roar the moment he saw the head.
"My God, damn it, that thing is still moving!"
"He killed someone? Gavin actually killed someone!"
William, who was standing nearby, suddenly realized and shouted, but before he could finish speaking, Eugene slapped him on the buttocks.
After interrupting William's nonsense, Eugene gritted his teeth and continued.
"Look closely, that head is moving! Did I fucking get too high?!"
"That shit, it really moves!"
After being repeatedly reminded by Eugene, William finally saw the zombie's constantly moving mouth.
Just then, Gavin casually tossed the zombie's head at their feet.
After the zombie head landed, it rolled twice and stopped at William's feet.
By the light of the gas station, William was shocked to see that the zombie, with only one head left, was actually trying to gnaw on his shoes!
In a panic, William swung his right foot and kicked the zombie's head away.
As William kicked the thing directly into the convenience store door, he swung his right foot and screamed in pain.
"Fuck, I didn't even see it clearly, you idiot!"
Eugene didn't laugh; instead, he cursed William in annoyance, then tried to get closer to the zombie's head for another look. But just as he was about to move, Madison pointed his gun at him.
He could only look down at Gavin.
Gavin waved his hand and said.
"Old Mike, that's enough."
"Hmph, consider yourself lucky!"
Old Mike nodded, then tapped Eugene on the back with the butt of his rifle.
Eugene ignored Old Man Mack and went straight for the zombie's head, lifting it up with his eyes wide open.
"Fake..."
His eyes met the zombie's eyes for a long time, then he yanked the head up in front of William.
"Let's go, get in the car, let's go home!"
"What...what do you mean, go home? Fuck, why is my head still moving after it's been cut off? Am I dreaming, Eugene?"
"Get the hell out of here! We need to get home!"
“My sister and my nephew are still at home, as are your damn father and brother. Haven’t you realized what happened in Texas? I’m not going to jail, but this is worse than jail, fuck!”
Eugene angrily threw away the zombie head and roughly dragged the bewildered William back into the car.
As he helped William into the passenger seat, he turned and glared at Gavin and Madison.
After a moment of silence, he moved his lips.
"Next time... next time I see you, I'll blow your heads off from hundreds of meters away!"
"Idiot, save your threats for next time. Be careful on your way back, and think more about those zombie movies."
Gavin chuckled and waved to Eugene, who had been making threats.
Eugene, his face flushed red and green, climbed into the car and drove off in his old Ford.
After Old Ford disappeared from their sight, Madison leaned over to Gavin and nudged Gavin's arm.
"That guy was alright, but that short, buzz-cut bastard named Eugene, are you just going to let them go like that? Keeping them around would be more useful."
Eugene is only about 175 cm tall and has short hair, so he looks short next to the two of them.
Gavin shrugged at Madison's suggestion and joked.
"I thought you were really annoyed by that guy; you two were arguing really fiercely."
"So what? I know that kind of bastard too well. You have to be ruthless when dealing with people like that. But he's quite perceptive and cautious."
“The young policeman named William is a greenhorn, but Eugene is definitely a seasoned veteran. My annoyance with his mouth and my admiration for him are not contradictory.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Madison looked at Gavin expectantly.
Gavin shook his head and said.
"Didn't you hear? They have reasons to go home. In the face of disaster, who would stop a man from seeing his family?"
"That's true. That's one of the reasons why I think he's a good guy. At least the first person he thinks of is his sister and that hotheaded bastard father."
After chatting for a while, Madison returned to the store to pack up his things without Gavin urging him to.
Gavin lit a cigarette and continued browsing the store while enjoying the smoke.
In America, convenience stores are generally well-stocked, or you could say chaotic; Gavin even found a box of makeshift gas masks.
However, it was a pipe dream to think that a single pickup truck could take away an entire convenience store. After the two of them had been picking through the goods for six or seven minutes, the truck bed was almost full.
Gavin tossed two bottles of mineral water into the truck bed and muttered something while looking at the bed.
"That's about enough. Let's go. Maybe we'll see my house before sunrise."
"I'll listen to you. Besides, small convenience stores really don't have anything good. They don't even have a Fiji cup."
Madison said with a grin, then piled the last four barrels of oil onto the truck bed.
Then, he looked at the driver's seat of the car and said.
“I’ll drive this time. You really need to rest for a while. I know the way to Karens Town. Isn’t your house nearby?”
"indeed."
Gavin agreed and went to the passenger seat on his own, while Madison excitedly sat in the driver's seat and rubbed the steering wheel hard.
As Madison started the car, Gavin tapped on the window with his finger and reminded him.
"Don't keep going on the main road. The main road ahead will cut straight through the middle of Ennis and Cosicana."
“I know we need to avoid crowded places, but speaking of Ennis…”
Madison couldn't help but look at Gavin.
