Chapter 25 Where Does Courage Come From?
Chapter 25 Where Does Courage Come From?
Madison's words immediately attracted everyone's attention, and even Doris couldn't help but move closer to the door and look at Gavin.
Facing the tense gazes of the crowd, Gavin rested his elbows on the Tyrannosaurus Rex truck bed and smiled.
"Of course it will have an impact, but it's not a big problem. I think after they encounter the Ennis zombie, there will probably be a few scenarios."
"On the one hand, they joined the Ennis zombie horde in small groups and continued to come toward us, so we just have to proceed according to plan."
"On the other hand, if they continue through the Ennis zombie horde, the convergence of the two zombie hordes will inevitably cause both groups to become further separated."
"Even if we encounter them then, there's a good chance we'll be able to break through their even looser formation than we are now."
“Even if we can’t do that, we can follow behind them and wait until they cross the Ennis fork in the road before speeding through Ennis and heading to the town of Koscana.”
At this point, Gavin rubbed the corner of his eye, as if there was some eye boogers stuck there.
Not sleeping all night is no fun, but thankfully I just dozed off for an hour and my headache has lessened considerably.
At the entrance of the RV, Eugene clapped his hands and laughed heartily after hearing Gavin's words.
"Haha, quarterback, I'm starting to like all your tricks!"
"You're liking him too soon. I believe the best is yet to come for Gavin!"
Madison patted Eugene on the shoulder, but Eugene scoffed and dodged his hand, continuing to speak to Gavin.
"I'm so looking forward to it! I can't help but ask you how you are doing. Quarterback, have you had enough sleep? Do you want to sleep a little longer?"
At this point, Eugene, grinning, pointed at Doris and continued.
"I just passed by the oven and found that the woman's barbecue order still has more than two hours left. We won't be able to eat until eight or nine o'clock!"
"So why don't you sleep a little longer? Dinner's still a while away~"
"Ah this..."
Upon hearing Eugene's words, Doris immediately lowered her head in shame.
Looking at her toes, she pursed her lips and kept encouraging herself in her heart.
Doris, be strong!
Be strong!
After repeated encouragement, Doris raised her head and looked at Eugene's menacing face, with a scar at the corner of his eye.
Doris hurriedly looked away from that face, and her nose stung with tears.
"Waaah... I'm sorry, I... I rarely make stew in the morning, it takes a while, waaaah..."
"mom!!!"
Winnie was so anxious she almost spit out her cola through her nose.
Seeing this, Gavin waved his hand at Doris in an annoyed manner and said.
"Go cook!"
"I understand, waaaaaah..."
Doris's crying intensified, and she scurried back to the gas stove, frantically preparing the stove.
Watching Doris's departing figure, Winnie's face fell.
Seeing Gavin's displeased expression, Winnie reluctantly went to Gavin's side, picked up a can of cola, and said awkwardly.
"I admit my mom is a bit of a crybaby, but believe me, her cooking is really delicious!"
"Before my dad and mom got married, my mom owned a French restaurant, a fast food restaurant, and a bakery, but after they got together, my mom stopped working."
"Oh, really?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin patted Winnie's head and asked.
How old is your mother?
"Forty-two, boss, why are you asking this?"
Winnie looked at Gavin warily, while Gavin smiled and said to her.
"Only forty-two? She doesn't look it. But she got married quite early. Your brother is almost an adult, isn't he?"
"So kid, why did your mom open so many shops before she got married? Maybe the restaurants went out of business too quickly?"
"Boss!"
Winnie couldn't help but roll her eyes, but she was still a little curious about Gavin's words.
After lingering for a moment, she went to her mother's side to ask her.
Seeing that both women had entered the carriage, Gavin took out cigarettes and offered some to William and Eugene.
While puffing out smoke, William walked up to the Tyrannosaurus Rex, raised his hand to support himself on the dinosaur's body, and said to Gavin.
"Gavin, I...I want...I want..."
"Just spit it out already, buddy. Do you look constipated?"
Eugene was very annoyed by William's appearance, so he leaned over and cursed at him before naturally leaning against the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Urged on by Eugene, William glanced at him nervously, then spoke even more nervously to Gavin.
"I was thinking... when we pass by my house, could you... look for my brother? I want to know if he really has turned into a zombie!"
After finally getting to the bottom of things, William let out a long sigh of relief, then lowered his head with an expression of anticipation for judgment.
Upon hearing this, Gavin remained silent for a moment, then looked at Eugene expressionlessly.
Eugene felt a sudden chill run down his spine when Gavin's gaze swept over him.
A moment later, Eugene lunged at William, grabbed William's police uniform collar with both hands, and roared at William with his head held high.
"Are you a hero? Tell me, are you Superman? William, you're just a fucking trainee cop!"
"Do you think you're the only one who cares about your family? You can't forget your deceased father, and you're also worried about your brother whose fate is unknown. But what do you think of the living?"
"You're such a good son, a good brother. And what about me? I'm trash, aren't I? I knew my older sister and nephew were in Ennis, but I didn't even glance at them!"
"You're so damn noble, but I'm just that despicable, aren't I?!"
"Wait, that's not what I meant!"
Seeing that Eugene was about to lift him up, William struggled and quickly shook his head.
“You know I didn’t mean it that way, Eugene, I just… I just can’t let it go!”
"Haha, that's not what I meant, that's ridiculous!"
In response to William's explanation, Eugene scoffed, released William's collar, then slammed his fist into William's chest and roared.
"After I saw your deadbeat father and the thousands of zombies following behind the RV, I didn't even dare to look at my sister for the sake of our lives!"
"Because I know that my living older sister would never want me to appear before her dead, and my dead sister would only want me to live well, carrying on her legacy!"
"But now you can't let go of your worries, so you want to drag all of us into Ennis, which is full of zombies."
"Are you saying this artificial lake isn't safe enough, and you want to fucking have some fun with us?!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Eugene wanted to kick William, but he was too annoyed to lift his foot, so he simply circled around William in frustration.
As he spun around, Eugene spat and continued speaking to William.
"That quarterback kid's routines are annoying, but I love them to death because every single one of them reminds me how to survive!"
"And you, William, you're a fucking trainee cop, yet you're always reminding me how to take risks!"
"What are you doing? Where's your brain? It's the apocalypse now! The world has changed. You're lucky you haven't turned into a zombie!"
At this point, Eugene was so angry that he shoved William onto the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
William staggered and slid to the ground, sitting there dejectedly with his head down.
Eugene grew angrier the more he looked at William, so he picked up the half-empty bottle of Coke and approached William menacingly.
Seeing this, Gavin patted the Tyrannosaurus Rex's body and said softly.
"Alright, Eugene, let me talk to him."
After pushing Eugene aside, Gavin looked at William, kicked his leg that was lying on the ground, and said.
“You want to go find your brother? No problem. If we can get to Ennis Crossroads safely, you can drive your Ford back to Ennis yourself.”
At this point, Gavin greeted Madison.
"Old Mike, give him his USP."
"okay."
Madison nodded, went to the Tyrannosaurus Rex to retrieve the USP, and tossed it into William's arms.
William stared at the gun in his hand, his Adam's apple bobbing as he hesitated, unsure what to say, and remained silent for a long time.
Seeing this, Gavin exhaled a puff of smoke and said softly.
"I'm not a risk-taker, but I admit that there will always be times when we have to take risks."
“But, trainee police officer, I hope that when you decide to take a risk, you won’t rely on others for your courage.”
At this point, Gavin squatted down and placed his hand on William's shoulder.
After a moment of eye contact with the silent William, Gavin withdrew his hand and asked.
"So, William, where exactly does your courage to go back to Ennis come from?"
"It couldn't have come from me, could it?"
"That's a pity, I rarely take risks for people I've just met."
"What about you?"
